Nintendo Won’t Let EVO Stream Smash Bros

smash_bros_characters

It has been revealed today that Nintendo won’t allow top fighting game tournament EVO to stream Super Smash Bros Melee. The news came about when fighting game news site Shoruyken – which is run by the people behind the tournament – published the Evo schedule update.

Games that will feature at this year’s event include Mortal Kombat and Injustice as well as Super Street Fighter and Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3. Interestingly the Smash Bros Melee community raised around $95,000 for Evo’s charity fundraiser for breast cancer research. By raising that money the fans earned Melee an inclusion in this year’s tournament. There’s a hashtag for complaining about this on Twitter. #freemelee.

Regrettably, we’ve just been informed by Nintendo of America Inc. that we do not have permission to broadcast Super Smash Bros. Melee for Evo 2013.

Thanks to everyone that sent this in.

      1. Now now, give him some credit, he is obviously the subject of vicious (deserved) beatings from his parents at times, which explains how he misses a few.

    1. Nintendo is just keep digging their own grave, i hope they fail this gen so they can finally learn from their stupid mistakes..

      1. If anyone will fail, it’s Microsoft. Now, I’m not going to be an idiot fanboy and say “Microsoft is doomed” because they have a lot of money. I’m just saying that Xbox One will DEFINITELY be in 3rd place this year sales-wise.

        1. I’m not sure. They do have the games it’s basically a ps4 (or reversed) if the kinect wasn’t necessary then it would have the same price as ps4. Even i whom never had an Xbox seemed to like the games coming to it. And it has the E3 winning Titanfall

      1. Good that head of Nintendo can make their own choices and fix problems like this which all those people looking after Nintendo’s rights can make.

It would have been very stupid move from Nintendo to not let Smash Bros. to get free commercial with charity from gamers included.

    1. This smells fishy, I am really starting to think there is a saboteador in Nintendo, especially in market and copy rights dep!!!
PLEASE SUPPORT 3RD PARTY TITLES ON WII U AND 3DS!!!

    1. Has Miiverse honestly become a place where you lot just bitch and complain about every little thing that Nintendo does that doesn’t make your human-hood quiver? I bet when they allow outside pictures, you guys are just gonna have signs protesting Nintendo all over your bodies, aren’t you?

      1. Dude, Miiverse is like the only way Nintendo can come directly with their fans (specially Uncle reggie, Miyamoto and Iwata). Remember what happened with Earthbound? It was because of the enormous demand in Miiverse that we can get the game back In NA and for the first time in Europe.

  1. I don’t understand this Machiavellian fascination the internet has got going for it with watching other people play video games. You poor or what?

    1. You clearly have never heard of EVO, and don’t even know what you’re damage controlling about.

  2. I’ve been playing Nintendo as long as I can remember I love their games. But this… this is to much. First you claim YT vids that are getting you free publicity then you won’t let EVO stream your game that fans raised over $95,000 dollars for? Bad move Ninty.

  3. Nintendo really needs to fire their ENTIRE MARKETING TEAM!!! This is free publicity that they are denying. WTF is up with that?

    1. Yes, HOW DARE they not let EVO advertise… a near-12 year old Gamecube game?

You didn’t think this piss-blood anger phase out, did you?

  4. I have to ask, because this is way beyond stupid, WHY Nintendo would Won’t Let EVO Stream Smash Bros Melee? One single good reason, that is the only thing I want.

  5. Nintendo puts ads on youtube videos
wont let evo show their game

Apparently nintendo really hates free press

  6. Aside that this is a massive dickmove that reaches Microsoft level of douchebaggery…
Why would they believe they’d gain anything from doing this? Or prevent any kind of loss?

On the off chance that they WOULD benifit from that stunt…do they really think it’s worth making their fans mad? It’s just like the Let’s Play situation (which they thankfully dropped). Even if they would get a little more money, is it really worth the trust of their fanbase?

As for me, I wouldn’t have watched the stream anyway (I’ll probably watch Persona 4 Arena and King Of Fighters XIII though…and maybe Street Fighter)…so I may not really care personally but, for principles matter, I am very much against this.

Come on, the game came out more than 10 years ago. If anything, this will build hype for the next Smash Bros. It’s like they didn’t even consider the consequences of their decision.

  8. Man, Nintendo really get on my nerves sometimes…

Their own fans raised fucking 95k just so they can have their most beloved NINTENDO GAME in a tournament, they committed such a good effort just for that and Nintendo says NOPE???? Wow, that is really dumb.

Might not even purchase SSB4 now, they might not allow it to be played as a competitive game and will deny any chance it has to be streamed. Guess Nintendo is just about the casuals after all and forgot their core gamers. Stupid stupid stupid me for having such high hopes for Nintendo in 2013. :/

    1. SherlockWillFightBilbo

You don’t understand. They can still PLAY the game, it just won’t be streamed like the other games played competitively. They will still play the game, however unenthusiastically.

      1. Of course, what is better to watch, your favorite sports Grand Finals live when you are full of hype and whatnot or not watch it live and feel like something you fought so much to have won’t have the thumbs up from Nintendo (having the game getting streamed).

Will it still have casters, though?

        1. Relax.

The sports Grand Finals need the money in order to setup everything, which can be VERY expensive (even the stadium rental can be that expensive).

The money used to support the motion to get SSBM as a game in the tournament goes to charity, not the people.

In other words, there’s no reason to actually pay money in order for a game to be played, since it’s inexpensive compared to the grand finals

Besides, it’s possible to get other ways to request it, like a petition, for example.

Also, you don’t know what copyright law entails and the likes.

If anything, they could actually get sued for using the game commercially like that.

Just be glad that Nintendo actually allows the game to be played at the event.

      1. Nintendo, you know what you should do? You should match the 95k that they raised for Breast Cancer and let them play and stream Super Smash Brothers U instead! This way you can help fight cancer while advertising your new Smash Brothers Game! It will be like that movie “The Wizard” where you debuted Super Mario Bros. 3! :)

        Think about it!

        1. It’s not even released yet.

How could they play a tournament of a incomplete game?

After its release, yes, but the next tournament sounds like it’s this year, and we all know it won’t be released this year.

        2. Sad to think but for someone born in 80’s there is propably nothing anymore that can be as epic as that final was in “The Wizard”. xD

  9. What?!?!?!? How could Nintendo lose any income from them streaming a game from the GameCube?????!!!!!! This is insane!!! This would give Super Smash Bros Melee street cred!!!!! Sometimes I love Nintendo and sometime I hate Nintendo! WTF!

    1. Idk why people are so mad. It’s just Melee.. They can probably still play Brawl and maybe the new smash when it comes out. But it still sorta sucks. At least we get other smashes.

  10. Nintendo’s marketing team isn’t doing well. They’ve failed to truly advertise the WiiU, and they’re turning down free super smash bros. marketing. ‘,:i

  11. Well, that’s a shame. Another chance at free publicity down the drain. Can’t keep moving backward like this Ninten, continue to make excuses and etc.

  12. Nintendo is a food company but the one responsible for the lack of advertising is the one in charge of PR and Marketing in the US. Hopefully, they can get a more competent employee . This might help… Public Relations Contact

      1. They were, at some point, according to the Wikipedia article “History of Nintendo”.

Granted, the company was experimenting with different markets to see which one was the most successful in after the market for hanafuda cards deminished, with toys, and eventually, video games, becoming the most successful.

  13. I hate the FGC so I say fuck em. Nintendo didn’t want them to stream a bunch of 25 year old losers screaming “faggot” over their game. Get some real problems and come back and see me.

    1. That’s a very shallow and uninformed description of the FGC and EVO.
Fact: Anyone who tries to defend Nintendo on this is an absolutely blind fanboy.

  14. I just sent Nintendo an e-mail about this. I sent it as a Corporate Issue. Hopefully Nintendo gets bombarded with these e-mails, and MiiVerse gets light on fire and Twitter booms with tweets. Nintendo has got to change their mind about this issue. 💋

  15. Are you shitting me, Nintendo?

Politely request Nintendo to reconsider this decision by contacting their Twitter or Facebook!! Their Twitter is @NintendoAmerica and their Facebook is Nintendo. Also, if you use Twitter, use # MeleeStream4Evo ! I tweeted Sakurai, and it’s worth a try…

    1. I don’t think Sakurai would help. This is an NOA decision. However, it won’t hurt I guess. Get this everywhere!

  16. Wow, fuck you Nintendo, that’s a real dick move…

Bringing down the EVO hype because you don’t have any for the WiiU.

  17. “Please understand…” comes to mind.
As much as I love nintendo… this was a shitty move, worse yet if their actions give them negative pres.

    1. It’s time like this that make me want them to be a software only company….

Sony exclusive of course, but only so there’s a good company in charge of how their content gets around.
And one that actually cares about games.

      1. Likewise.
        That “If” LOL.
One can always dream of the possibilities of Nintendo Products on such hardware.
Will probably never happen and I can’t complain with games as great looking as X, the tech demo for Zelda and MK8 but that “What if..” is always there haha

        1. I’ve always wanted a Sony/Nintendo console.

Nintendo first party, Sony first party, Nintendo variety, Sony core, Nintendo “user” experience (or whatever), Sony’s hardware and other policies.

          Unstoppable.

  18. I had a good laugh. This is for breast cancer and they completely shot down what would of been a fun event. If enough people make this public I’m sure they will turn this around just like the lets plays.

    1. I don;t know if they realize, but most women with breast cancer who liked Wii Fit won’t be happy with this news! Nintendo just turned Wii Fit U into Wii Fuck U…something grows fowl in Nintendoland…

  19. hahahahaahahahaha let the hate begin!!!!!! the scared shivering fanboys are scared and mad, they see like one of the smallest problems that nintendo has now days…. well its a start and they can start to see. the sheep are trying to fight back (weeks later) fatal frame 5 is in the making not coming to us) all fanboys dont care continue to have shitty games.

  20. Either this is a “publicity stunt” or the North American Marketing Team is extremely and terribly incompetent.

    1. Well…there is something we can do but I doubt they’ll listen…unless there is an angry mob coming to both nintendo locations or some blind idiot does something then they might…”MIGHT”…lend a helping hand and turn this issue around.

  22. i think this is the part where everyone complains like victims, and one person actually acts like an adult and kindly tells Nintendo to cut this shit out

    and then they do

and then those people proceed to be like “yeah they’d better >:(“

  23. I honestly don’t care. I have never heard of EVO before…I don’t support competitive tournaments with prize money and such. However I’m not a blind fanboy. This is just another silly decision from Nintendo. They could change their mind later. Maybe Brawl will be streamed. But I have never watched EVO so this doesn’t effect me lol. Nintendo should remove the Matched 3rd Party Content on YouTube videos thing…Nintendo is a 1st Party lol not a 3rd Party loop holes!!!

  24. Lol at the randoms here who don’t even play competitive smash. Glad Nintendo changed their minds.

  25. Yeah, they sorta this out, so it will be streamed. If you have ever done events (I have professional done events both as a musician and as a planner), things like this happen all the time. Usually someone in the corporation gets their wires crossed and says the wrong thing, a couple more calls it gets sorted out. The thing is not to get too worked up about it while things get fixed.

  26. This just goes to show you:

There’s no such thing as a pure good company (nor there’s such a thing as a pure evil one).

I was speaking from the angry fan’s point of view when I said the above sentence.

I’m not one of them. :P

  27. Well that was fast. They already changed their minds. Melee will be streamed. We have the power!!

  28. I actually blame the competition. They should’ve asked WAY in advanced if they were even able to have the game instead of the last minute. Nintendo has every right to cancel without their consent and sadly, people will blame Nintendo.

  29. They really should just get over it. For one, it’s an old game that’s getting attention. For two, it’s not like they’re losing money over it. Especially since it’s a game that’s not even in print anymore. From what I’ve seen in the comments it appears they’ve reversed this decision, but the point is they really shouldn’tve made this decision to begin with.
