The development team behind the critically acclaimed The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker have revealed that they initially thought about having beams shoot out of Link’s eyes when the started development on the game. The team revealed that Miyamoto said that they needed to come up with a means to justify Link’s oversized eyes and this could have been the thing they needed. However, Takizawa concludes that this wouldn’t have been a good idea.

“Now that the eyes had gotten much larger, we wanted to make their facial expressions richer by increasing the number of patterns for the eyes and mouth. Partway through, we even talked about having beams come out of those eyes! (laughs). I don’t think [eye] beams were really an option, though.

    1. I kinda hope they add it in the new Zelda HD…Maybe it could be a power Zelda gets instead of Link or something!? She’s pretty magical! :O

    1. Hello Jaded_DryBones even Jtz, Nintendo commander, Icezeama, n-Dub and the great Nintendo gamers that don’t comment but only view this site due to Troll-essence shall appreciate with bewildered joy the removed plans of the original wind Waker LOL.

  1. I’m sure there were plenty of odd ideas thrown out there in the early development stages.. Sometimes you have to be super creative and come up with possibilities like that. But everyone knows that in the end such a thing wouldn’t be final, at least not without some major changes.

  2. Do you not see the “(laughs)”? I’m pretty sure that it was said as a joke, and it was taken as a joke when he said it. Seeing as he said later: it wasn’t an option…..

  3. Really?
They should’ve also had sharks with lasers on their heads, and let us fight them with our laser eyes from the boat.

    1. God you’re smart.
      Yes, that’s exactly it.
I don’t want lasers being shot out of Links eyes, or nose, or ASS because I’m afraid of change.
It has nothing to do with how fucking bad that idea was.

      1. Its because your too use to the way link always was that if one little thing was added like eye lasers you would flip out so yes it is because your afraid of change. If link had that since the first Zelda you wouldn’t think it as a bad idea

        1. For what purpose would it be for? Do other items already have similar capabilities(sword, arrows)? What puzzles would it solve? how doest it fit with the theme and story?
Sure it would be kinda cool, but it would be redundant and out of place.

          1. the sling shot had similar use to the bow and arrow and both were still in the game. can add a use for it and just like they added a use for the iron ball and chain in TP or any other “new” Zelda ability, item they can add a use to laser eyes. Its possible and would be cool that’s all

            1. I’m not afraid of changes, the new mechanics in a link between worlds are very nice imo. I don’t think laser eyes would fit in wind waker though, would be pretty jarring.

  4. So it’s a focused, eye based version of the fire magic from ocarina of time? Hmm, that’d be interesting. It’d be interesting to see what other kinds of weird magics Nintendo could think of

  5. Why justify his giant eyes? What about his giant head and micro feet?

The “lasers shooting from his eyes” idea would be cool if it was just a special power Link could gain during his journey. But a bad idea if he was just able to do that normally.

  6. Well since the Zelda series covers a large timeline, they could make one that takes place in more of a modern/futuristic setting much farther down in the timeline. That way, maybe they could implement the eye beams through goggles or something…
