Prominent Shareholder Demands That Nintendo Embrace Smartphone Gaming

Seth Fischer, who is one of Asia’s best-known hedge fund managers, has written to Nintendo to demand that the company begins developing and selling games on Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android. Candy Crush Saga developer King managed to generate $1.9 billion in revenues in 2013, or $5 million a day. Fischer says that Nintendo arguably has the largest library of casual games so they would be well suited to smartphone and tablet based gaming.

“Nintendo needs to embrace this thematic change in consumer demand, behaviour and expectations to stay relevant,”

“It is readily apparent that the standard elasticity of demand principle no longer applies in the consumer entertainment market when access requires the purchase of a physical product.”

“As the holder of what is arguably the largest library of casual games, Nintendo is well placed to make an immediate entry into mobile”

    1. They might just do things like ads and promotions or videos… or something like Miiverse but more playable as a game on smart phones.
But not full games like Zelda… they are on acid to think phones are worthy of such a gem.

      1. I think limited demos (playable 20x ect) on smartphones/tablets COULD be a good idea… depends on alot of variables though.

        1. I was thinking demos as well but phones have very different hardware compared to Nintendo hardware.
Just think about it… how would they put a demo of DKC Tropical Freeze in a phone?…

          1. Couldnt go that big, I was thinking maybe scaled down 3ds game demos at most. No way the gameplay could translate from a full blown console. I really dislike virtual controls too, but it could be done correctly.

            1. Their are lots of things Nintendo could do to help business, simply making smart phone games is not the answer. Maybe they could make a few sure. And they could probably make a few free to play things (like a free to play Mario cart for phones) and if they do they should work on just putting them on windows devices, as Microsoft well treat them the best, and since they both make games they can work on possibly some cross over things or at least share software stuff

          2. why dont nintendo make thier own smart phone/ gaming device? with dedicated control’s? it boggles my mind that sony of all people who have a excellent smart phone division with the xperia range have not made a playstation mobile with vita incorporated! i would so buy a vita if it could be a fully fledged smart phone same with a 3ds!

One can hope they do this for the future handhelds.

        2. Nintendo COULD kill it in mobile though. Especially if they went about it the right way, it could drum up alot of interest in Nintendo’s franchises. Releasing NES virtual consile onto smartphones would be a start. Helps expose todays youth who ARENT growing up with Nintendo and are consumed with their devices to the brand.

        3. It would take too much effort to make a demo to a 3DS on phones. It would essentially be porting, and at that point they pretty much could release it, in full, on a phone.

    2. We’ll I think Nintendo could make some money on the mobile market. It doesn’t have to be a Zelda, Mario, or even Pokémon. It could be something on the lines of a puzzle jewel or a farm simulator. I have a 3ds but playing something super casual from Nintendo whilst I wait for a impromptu appointment or stuck at DMV would be awesome. Also I see a lot of folks playing games on cell phones or tablets even if its free the commercials announcing to the user of an upcoming games on wii u or 3ds.

  1. People only play ultra simple games on their phones, ones that are supported by ads. Does not fit Nintendo at all. The mobile market is not about a game being good its about being lucky, most phone devs (good ones) dont make their money back on their investments.

  2. umm no, i have a better idea. What about if instead of mobiles Nintendo makes games for their OWN hardware. I mean why the fuck they should make games for other platforms when they have own system in the first place?

  3. I cant understand why are Nintendo fans so apposed to shitty Nintendo minigames like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXLSu7YCrWI and this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTIRk_QtgaY Being on smartphones ? I dont see the big deal .. At the end of the day Nintendo is a business. A business makes money. And at the moment they are loosing money with the Wii U. A third pillar would send Nintendos shares and profits through the roof if they released smartphone games … Sorry but its the future and you will have to embrace it ..

      1. That pachter douche is such an old and ugly creep who is annoyingly rude to Nintendo. I’m not trying to say anything against your point or his, just being an ass to an asshole like him. Carry on though! :)

        1. Ain’t it the truth though? I mean the guy can’t even get anything right and HE STILL SAYS DOOM AND GLOOM…much like every other troll or hater here…and MOST OF THE TIME, WRONG! But I added him for a point this time just to imagen if Nintendo did go to smartphone will ruin their console business…

  4. tell the douche FUCK OFF!!!! they can tell him to pound sand up his ass and if he don’t like it sell his shares back and go loose all his money on sony or microsux. asshole just thinks o Nintendo=free money so they need to pay his bills by making crappy phone games. he needs to go away for good.

  5. Seth who?

It’s not Nintendo’s fault that society today is stupid and dumb and the biggest game making money is Flappy Bird. Just proves how bad taste people have.

This guy just wants Nintendo to make a shitty smartphone game like Flappy Bird and get billions of dollars just because they download and play the game for 5 minutes per day.

It’s all about making money, all these investors want NIntendo to make smartphone games to make lots of money and then buy stock so they can feed off Nintendo’s success.

Where is this idiot telling Sony and Microsoft to put their exclusives on smartphones and kill their consoles?

    1. SherlockWillFightBilbo

So you think Nintendo is above these companies? These other companies are making $5 million every day. Of course it’s all about money, Nintendo’s a BUSINESS. Money is the priority. Of course, long-term Nintendo shouldn’t release their games on smartphones.

They should only release casual, simple games on smartphones. Flappy Bird is one of the most simple games ever made and it’s free. People don’t have to invest time on it, and when you have a phone and are waiting for the bus, you don’t always want to crank out Call of Duty. By no means should they release a new Zelda or Mario on them, but they should release retro games or crappy games that Nintendo doesn’t really value.

  6. they just need more smart investments like lego sets would be a gold mine and be great advertising. future my ass mobile only lines the pockets of google and crapple so don’t spout shit all I use my phone for is talking to other people hmmm imagine that. that’s all they should be for. at some point google and crapple just need to find time to FUCK OFF!!! they ruined the future :( they keep spying as long as people keep buying. they are fighting with the supreme court saying people should be allowed to wear google glass while driving and trying to grease the palms of justice with green.

  7. Yes, rather than be relevant for years and years to come, sell your soul for relevancy today and be completely irrelevent tomorrow. Nintendo need to trust that they know what they’re doing a whole lot better than these analysts and shareholders, who understand the market much, much less.

    You’re welcome Ambassador Sickr…

Our empire should only join the phone world on our own terms, meaning our own phone and operative system…

    1. well not really though a Nintendo phone would sell quite bad………unless it rivals galaxy lol.

few games will work……..the FREE ones and maybe 3 total paid ones plus adds. advertisements make TONS of money on phones.

  9. The ONLY thing I could see them utelizing Smart Phones for are for additional things in-game like Sony and Microsoft do. I know that in Beyond: Two Souls for PS3 you can download an app to actually control the game. I didn’t try it out cos I don’t have the game yet, but I’ve heard it actually works really well and is easy to use. In Knack for PS4 there’s an iOS game you can download which gives you in-game rewards. And 360/One have SmartGlass, which I honestly haven’t seen utilized in anything I’ve played. I had to connect it in Fable: Anniversary for an achievement, but it did nothing really. No maps, etc. But I believe some games do offer maps on your phone/tablet during gameplay. Nintendo could easily do something like a mini-game thing where you get 1-Ups or Rupees, something like that. Then when people are on break at work or at lunch at school they can earn a few bonuses for their game back home. This would be perfect cos they wouldn’t need to sell out their franchise to phones, could cross-promote it with the Wii U/3DS and get some attention on phones. Sell it for $.99 and bam. Make a few extra bucks. As long as the mini-games don’t REQUIRE you to have a Wii U I’m sure people would snag Mario, Zelda and co. games on their phone.

    1. The problem with using phones as peripherals is that the makers of the developers cannot expect everyone to own the compatible tool, thus it ends up becoming either a meaningless add-on or a serious restriction.
That’s the reason developers don’t use the Vita capabilities with PS3 and PS4 like they do the GamePad despite being similar, the GamePad comes bundled with the Wii U, so they can trust anyone with the console owns the controller and can exploit it; while PS3 and PS4 do not come with the Vita, so they can’t risk to diminish the size of their market by forcing integration with the Vita as a peripheral.

  10. he may possibly be out of touch on what casual gameing is or at least not be in touch with what nintendos main first party games play like.

  11. I think they should make new ips for tablet and phone gaming in order to make more money but never hand over key franchises like pokemon, Zelda, Mario etc. that should only b found on their own consoles

  12. largest library of casual games.. seriously?

when i hear these idiots talk who know *jack shit* about gaming my skin starts to crawl…

i bet this guy wouldn’t be able to tell a casual game from a core game if they had that description written all over them

  13. I am fine with Nintendo’s console market reach becoming more niche. Most media is headed that way anyway. Look at music. While the majority has gone digital with their music purchases – there will always be a market for Vinyl. I’d like to think there will always be a market for quality game experiences on Nintendo hardware.

Nintendo clearly doesn’t want to give up their quality and compromise their vision, so instead they are investing efforts in things like this new Quality of Life direction. This direction has alarmed some and since we don’t know details, it is easy to speculate, but i value innovation over mass market cash grabs any day and I am curious to see how it manifests itself.

but then again, i am not an investor. so it’s not my money on the line.

  14. Wow a lot of you don’t play games on mobile devices do ya? Not all of these games are cheap cash ins. Some of them are actuslly fully developed and functioning games capable of rivaling some console games.

    1. No. nothing rivals console games from phones……..the touchscreen only is worst part of those games though I do play some of the FREE ones.

  18. If what we have learn is that noone tells Nintendo what to do
why lame ass “shareholders” keep telling that
The amount that Mobile gaming gets is minimal compared to real gaming sells
It is true that mobile is the trend now but is because it became a daily use device
    Also, damn idiots think downloads=sales
god, i cant even imagine the amount of times a game was downloaded on a smartphone to be cracked

  19. Nintendo should not port any of their games to mobile, but they could make simple, easy, touch control endless runners, and tower defense games and puzzle games using Nintendo characters, and that would not hurt 3DS sales or Wii U sales, it would be advertising for 3DS and Wii U. Seriously, Donkey Kong used to be on Colicovision and Atari and that didn’t hurt Nintendo. They could make a new Tower Defense game with Donkey Kong, an endless runner with Mario, and puzzle Legend of Zelda and puzzle Metroid simple touch based controls.

  20. “As the holder of what is arguably the largest library of casual games,”

    ………

What in the HELL is this half-wit talking about?!

MOST OF NINTENDO’S FRANCHISES CATER TO ALL GAMERS.

If they want casual games, they should be asking ALL OF THE THIRD PARTIES THAT FLOODED THE WII WITH THEIR SHOVELWARE!

What’s this guy’s Email? Does anyone know?
I would DEARLY love to send this guy a wake-up call.[one that doesn’t offend, but that politely points out how misinformed he is]

  22. can anyone tell me and prove that GCN sucks? no? well it doesnt, in fact it has a lot of great games like “shit” “kiddy” graphics of wind waker and “shit” mario sunshine, “shit” luigi’s mansion, “shit” resident evil ports, 0, 4, “shit” bros melee. yes im being sarcastic and here is a fact about the GCN, its as powerful if not slightly less powerful than xbox one, the original not x-bone which i will be calling it that. point is the gamecube has a lot of great games despite the the fact nintendo use mini dvd for its games so making games with great graphics is possible but hard. *see metroid prime 1+2*. no nintendo will not make full-fledged games as it will take its business from 3ds and wii u so maybe mini games that is not a demo but something like nes remix or mini games that do not tie in with the full game, maybe a mobile version of pokemon-aime and pokemon radar but in mini game form or a companion app like what they do for some games

  23. How can someone be this retarded?
One out of hundred of thousands of mobile games makes a big profit and Nintendo should risk everything taking the spot of that one game? Is he literally retarded?

And no, just because a game is casual doesn’t mean it suited for smartphones and touch controls.

There is no fucking way a proper platformer could work on touch controls and keep up with the quality of controls and level design as Mario games.

For every game that makes any big money on smartphones, there are 100 games that are a huge flop. The console and PC market are still much safer because the people who play on those platforms are more willing to pay for quality games and not pay to not wait games.
As long as Nintendo keeps not making AAA games with a 20 million marketing budget, they are safe.
Every business has problems every now and then and this is currently Nintendo’s time. The company has a long history of huge profits and few bad years should force them to completely change a business strategy that has proven to be working.

Whoever makes requests from Nintendo to move to the smartphone market is clinically retarded and I feel sorry for him.

  24. I really hope Nintendo doesn’t put full games on smart phones, especially Apple products. Maybe a trailers app or a demo, but not full fledged games. Nintendo would lose it’s “must have demand” with its fans because now you can just go and play first party software on your mobile phone. If I can do that, why should I buy a 4DS/Fusion DS (or whatever the hell they come up with)?

  25. This is a prime example of why shareholders are bad for gaming. They don’t know what the fudge they’re talking about. This guy sees Candy Crush making all kinds of money (supposedly, I am highly doubtful of King’s claims of how much they make) and figures Nintendo should get on that gravy train. What he doesn’t realize is that Nintendo got where they are with QUALITY games, not garbage games that are rip offs of old PC titles (Candy Crush = Bejewelled).

Nintendo has been around for, what, about 140 years? I think they know what they’re doing despite the few missteps in recent years. This shareholder doesn’t like Nintendo’s decisions? Maybe he should sell his shares and invest in King or Rovio and see how much of that money he has left in 2-3 years. Nintendo will still be rocking awesome while all of these mobile companies will be in dire straights due to their lack of, you know, good games. And the only thing keeping these companies going now are whales and ad revenue, both of which always dry up.

  26. purple goat speaks true… maybe im an old-fashioned N fanboy, but i don’t think any cell phone on the market comes close to competing with a 3ds in terms of content and gameplay. gameplay is key. i downloaded an aliens vs. predator game on my kindle recently. the graphics rocked, the story line and things were interesting, but the control is loose and not accurate. if you don’t have good control and gameplay you can never feel like you are really playing as the character. you can never lose yourself in the game. you need quick and precise control in a game or you have nothing. just my opinion

  27. im fine with companion apps that is not required but optional to use and no, casual games are not superior to good quality games and indie games, candy crush is not better that pokemon trozei, some shitty platformer is not better than mario and classic games are better suited for virtual console, yes there are emulators which you ios/androids should just be happy with while i will be happy with VC. dont expect GCN game to run on smartphones so you are better off getting a wii u and wait till nintendo to actually brings them to vc, same with ds and i know there are some ios/android emulators that run ds games but suck, im better off with a ds flashcard as they are the perfect emulators. btw, how the hell would you play ds roms on smartphones with only touchscreen?

  28. LOL AND WHT DOES THIS COUGH SHARE HOLDER NOW ABOUT GAMING LOL

IM ALSO A SHARE HOLDER AND LOL @ PHONE GAMING

NINTENDO MUST EMBRCE FLAPPY BIRD FOR FUCKS SAKE THE WORLD HAS GONE CASUAL CRAZY

What next nintendo must embrace casual 4 the DERP console from phony and fuck gming in the ass for ever

i control 11 players on wii pes not 1 player on ps pes nintendo is gaming and its future

phones a phony 4 are not GAMINGGGGG devces

  30. I think that Nintendo can calm down this bitch by getting some underpaid indie studio to make a port of Super Mario Bros. for Android or iOS and be done with it, people upload the game to app stores dozens of times daily, so there’s a chance it can be capitalized, and if it fails it will probably not hurt the company (Whatever money it makes may cover what little it costed to make in the first place); best thing is that they can’t loose, if it triumphs it keeps the idiot satisfied and if it fails they can shut him up.
But making games for telephones and tablets? Like, from scratch? He’s just delusional, Nintendo needs all the time and resources they need to focus on Wii U (I think they need to stop putting so much effort in 3DS, it already has momentum, let it live off of it for a while and focus harder on Wii U).
