Nintendo has confirmed its E3 2014 plans via press release and will host a Digital Event under the name “Play Nintendo” on June 10. Last year, Nintendo hosted a Nintendo Direct to reveal upcoming software and hardware releases, and this year will continue that front but with a small reinvigorated twist.
The publisher will launch a series of new channels for the biggest gaming event of the year which will communicate directly to fans, media, analysts, investors and business partners. News will be unveiled in the special Digital Event, along with the Super Smash Bros. tournament – featuring in-depth game demos from the Nintendo booth, as well as an opportunity to play Super Smash Bros. for Wii U at Best Buy.
Nintendo of America’s president and COO Reggie Fils-Aime said the following in support of the Digital Event: “We demonstrated last year that we are never afraid to reinvent a proven tactic or to break completely new ground if we believe it will provide the best experience for our fans, followers and partners. So, whether you’re attending E3 in person or joining online, there’s an amazing lineup of games, experiences and events coming your way.”
At E3 2014, Nintendo will offer four unique experiences, all under the unifying banner of “Play Nintendo.” You can check out the details from the press release below.
Super Smash Bros. Invitational
- 2014 will see the arrival of not one, but two new Super Smash Bros. games: Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. To commemorate this occasion, Nintendo is inviting 16 highly skilled Super Smash Bros. players to the NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles to compete in a Super Smash Bros. for Wii U tournament. Thousands of fans in the audience and countless more watching a live stream online will see new Super Smash Bros. characters clash with existing favorites in action for the first time. More important than declaring a winner, however, this event is a celebration of all things Super Smash Bros., and a great way for new and veteran fans to take part in a tribute to this legendary franchise. More information about the 16 invited participants in the tournament, the identity of the announcers, and how fans of the franchise can view the tournament in person and via webcast, will be communicated shortly.
Nintendo Digital Event
- Every year, Nintendo looks for the best way to show its games and share its news with fans, media and other key audiences. In 2013, Nintendo decided to forgo a traditional press conference and use a video – in that case a Nintendo Direct – to share its news from E3. The company is building on that approach at E3 2014 with the “Nintendo Digital Event,” a new kind of video program that will reveal and provide further detail about the gaming experiences on the way for Nintendo platforms in 2014 and beyond. The Nintendo Digital Event will air at 9 a.m. PT on Tuesday, June 10.
Nintendo Treehouse: Live @ E3
- This year, Nintendo will offer fans a deeper look at Nintendo’s biggest games of E3, with information directly from the source. The “Treehouse,” the Product Development department at Nintendo of America, will provide in-depth game demos live and unscripted from Nintendo’s booth. This new program will be live streamed during all hours of the E3 show. Fans can get settled in, open their browsers and experience the Nintendo games at E3 like never before.
Super Smash Bros. Smash Fest @ Best Buy
- In 2013, Nintendo broke new ground by expanding its E3 activities outside of the walls of the Los Angeles Convention Center and letting fans play some of the games being played on the show floor at participating Best Buy stores. The partnership between Nintendo and Best Buy continues in 2014 and will mark the first time around the world that fans have had the opportunity to get their hands on Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

i saw it the same way. Last year’s Nintendo E3 event didn’t get as much attention as they would’ve gotten on a live presentation (many journalists and gamers alike claimed they did it because they had nothing to show and were afraid to share the same spotlight as Sony and Microsoft – a thought Nintendo reinforced with the weak line up).
After that event, Nintendo asked on their Facebook page what fans wanted: a Nintendo Direct again for the new E3 or “Reggie kicking ass on stage” – guess which one got most voted? But it seems Nintendo is once again neglecting what fans want them to do in order to make their own thing, which now seems to be disappointing fans.
They have proven on multiple occasions that a stage performance doesn’t mean anything anymore. It’s just a waste of money on the companies’ parts. If journalists don’t write articles on Nintendo’s Directs then that is their choice not to, it is not because they had no idea that the information existed.
Nintendo’s Directs reach the same amount of people as Sony and Microsoft’s stage performances, because gamers are the only people that attend E3 in the first place (for some reason, people seem to think that non-gamers and random people show up to E3, but that’s a big lie). All gamers know whats going on between Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo. Plus the majority of E3 watches are sitting in front of their computer screen… Nintendo is making the right move yet again.
You view it as a bad thing out of nostalgia, but this is the future of E3. I guarantee that Sony and Microsoft will follow in Nintendo’s footsteps in a few years maybe sooner.
I agree with everything Pink said. Having a digital presentation allows Nintendo do present their information EXACTLY the way they want to. A stage presentation, multiple things can go wrong, such as stage technology failing, a presenter completely embarrassing themselves or forgetting their lines, etc. A stage presence garner’s no more viewers than a digital presentation. People at E3 will watch the digital presentation, and so will those at home tuning in, just like it was before. This gives Nintendo more money and resources to spend on presenting game demos, and giving E3 contenders a very fun time (an example being getting photos with all those rad Nintendo character statues).
The fact that more people wanted a stage presence is weird. As if those people are missing anything. You’ll still view both via the web, so I’m unsure what makes a digital presentation any different. I guess people are used to routine. But Nintendo is great about forging their own path. And forge a path they will.

And you’re right, journalists don’t write about Nintendo’s livestreams because Nintendo simply doesn’t let them know about it. The only ones who ever get to know about them are dedicated gamers, it’s Nintendo’s own fault for not being as involved in the press as they could/should, they simply don’t do anything for it. Another reason is that journalists who do know about the livestreams don’t have the time to watch them live because they’re busy experiencing new projects and products first-hand at E3. Same goes for the gamers, why would they waste the time they have to spend at E3 for sitting down and watching a livestream? Right, they shouldn’t, because investing time in actually experiencing new projects in person at E3 makes a lot more sense.
And no, Nintendo directs do not reach as many people as Sony’s or Microsoft’s or any other company’s live conference. In fact, you contradicted yourself and proved yourself wrong on that. E3 isn’t for gamers only, actually, it’s mainly for the press and for investors. That’s why live conferences reach by far more people than Nintendo’s livestreams, because not only gamers watch them, but also journalists, which leads to even more people to hear about those news announced during said conferences, considering journalists write about them and make the info accessible for everyone.
Long story short: No, Nintendo is not doing anything right, yet again.

I am hoping we get actual details on what the hell QoL is, as well as proof that 2015 won’t be the 3rd year of game-release fail. They need to provide something for their hardcore fans or we are leaving. I said I’d give Nintendo 2014 to win me back, and they’ve done nothing to do so. It better be a Hardcore E3.
They are most likely keeping everything else secret for now. I can tell there are some unannounced titles like The Legend of Zelda Wii U being revealed soon. Not to mention we haven’t seen anything on games like Hyrule Warriors and Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem in a while.

Most likely they are partnering up with devs to make more games for the wii u , hopefully they share their ips like star fox or fzero, with devs like platinum, or namco, atleast I hope
I know I’m extra bitchy today. I’m sure Mario Kart will take the edge off. I work, I go to the gym, I play with my dogs, and I game. I financially support one Console and one handheld. I’m in my 30’s and am taking a break from Mario, DK and all those colorful games. I want more mature content and feel like Nintendo is doing a poor job balancing their IP releases.
It doesn’t help that the WiiU was Marketed to hardcore gamers, had Bayo and X plastered all over it, and here I am, well over a year later, and no release dates. :(
Me personally, I’d probably keep my Wii U. But I can relate to that. I’d suggest you pick yourself up a PS4 if you aren’t too comfortable with Nintendo. They’ve been making some great games throughout the years, but now it just seems like they don’t even know what to do anymore…

I don’t get why people get so excited over this. I, for one, am rather disappointed. But getting disappointed by Nintendo has been happening rather often lately, sadly.
Instead of going for an on-stage conference where they can show people their games in full action and literally in person, they decide to do a lame Nintendo Direct again, just under another name. As if people who are actually attending E3 will bother to find a place to sit down and watch Nintendo’s “digital event”. Ridiculous. People won’t waste their time with watching an online livestream while they might as well discover and experience the new highlights of the gaming industry live in person. Sure, they will inform themselves about what’s new over at Nintendo, but you can believe me that people actually attending the E3 will not bother to watch it as the event is airing.

Exactly. These people freaking out over no stage stuff are overreacting. If they remember E3 2014, Nintendo still had a physical presence there with game stations for some of their games. And the Nintendo Direct will most likely be available on Youtube for those that don’t own a Wii U, don’t own a 3DS, or can’t go to E3.

Vast majority of consumers don’t watch press conferences. Only hardcore gamers would watch a 90min presentation that is mostly fluff with only about half an hour of actual game footages.
The majority get the run down from media that show video clips of games the are interested in, news recap, and summaries.
People complained about the wasted time and PR nonsense in these conferences. Nintendo tries something different that does away with the fluff. And what do they get? A backlash.

Anyone who is not there won’t get to see it in person either. Neither do the seated audience in the conference, they only see trailers and scripted gameplay from a selected few. The only time people at the event get to see stuff in person is when they are the show room floor after the conference. Atleast with Nintendo/BestBuy event and the live showroom coverage would be something for people who are not attending the event.
In the end,i think what you are really complain about is that Nintendo isn’t competing in a penis measurement contest (ie: whose conference was better?).

They will show us Fire Emblem x Shin Megami…. I know it… I’ve seen it in my crystal ball.
Also, Metroid, Yoshi, Animal Crossing, something Pokemon related on the Wii U, their QOL product line (whatever it is?), Bayonetta 2 release date, Mario Strikers 3, and a whole bunch of other stuff that we won’t see coming. I bet they will have one to two new collaborations between other companies like they have with Atlus and Tecmo Koei. Then we’ll probably get some new 3rd party announced games as well. Not much, but there will be a few things from Ubi, SEGA and CAPCOM and maybe Bandai Namco.
This one is more of a guess then a premonition, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they announced Nintendoland 2.0 with online functionality and a ton more minigames to play… actually, it’s not so a much a guess as it is a wish of mine. I really think the Nintendoland franchise has potential.

I definitely would have kept Nintendo Land if it had online functionality. I don’t get many visitors here, so a game made up of mini-games has to have online or I’ll pass. So Nintendo Land 2 would definitely be a buy.
Don’t forget new minigames based on games like Kid Icarus, Kirby, Fire Emblem, and a few others.
If they do a Nintendoland sequal, they need to reskin and rename it.
I love everything about this video except the idea of a digital event.
People are claiming that Nintendo proved the staged event to be pointless. How? I see no advantage to a digital presentation. Nintendo Directs are a terrible marketing strategy and only reach a minuscule amount of people (gamers) when they need to be reaching the overall public eye. I understand E3 will be filled to the brim with media and developers…. who wont be able to view the stream because they’re out at the venue. These digital presentations reach us because were all nerdgasming Nintendo fans (myself included), but they don’t serve a good enough purpose. A live event presents to more. Especially in the face of others where its tangible and available. The Wii U needs hardcore marketing and E3 is a huge opportunity.
The Digital event will be something that will reach beyond a regular Nintendo Direct…

PS2 games looked great, anyway, so I don’t care if Hyrule Warriors looks that way. Not to mention it might have been in early development. NEVER judge the final product on it’s early development appearance. As for Zelda U, I hope it doesn’t look like that tech demo of the Gohma fight from Twilight Princess. Zelda is better when it’s graphics are colorful, not dull colored like Twilight Princess even though I did enjoy the game. Zelda can be awesome & dark without being realistic. Majora’s Mask says hello.
That isn’t gonna cut it though this time. Most people (including myself) have been saying that Zelda would be the game to show off the Wii U’s graphical capabilities. That Wii U tech demo looked amazing and it’d be a dream come true to for the final product to look like it. :)
And Zelda can do that just as easily without bland photo-realistic graphics. Screw the people that think Zelda can only be great if it has photo-realistic graphics. Nintendo has proven to me the best Zelda games are ones without realistic graphics holding it back.
But if Nintendo does go with those graphics again, I’ll get over it & still play Legend of Zelda for Wii U because that Nintendo franchise is just as important to me as Metroid.

Back to the E3 subject, I hope Nintendo reveals some big surprise games, and doesn’t focus only on games we already know about. Because I have a feeling it’s going to be nothing but Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 8. They NEED some surprises. And nothing that involves fitness or dancing.

By making a Nintendo Direct and not a live show it makes them look weak and cheap, didn’t help last year and it feels lazy, just prepare a video and show it, really? Look how Sony kicked ass last year with their show and when an awesome game is revealed it’s amazing to hear the audience’s reaction and you can see Nintendo execs in person and live not in a premade video.
It’s more exciting than with a video, and that’s why people see Nintendo not competing directly with Xbox and PlayStation, ’cause they make smaller and more lazy things.
I just hope the announcements are big.
I agree (sorta). I miss Nintendo’s live E3 press conferences. I don’t know why they’re weaseling out of it lately? But as long as they reveal some really good news, I forgive them.
I think the reason why they are taking the cheaper route of not having a stage at E3 is so they can do the Best Buy event again. For my own selfish reasons, I actually prefer this just so I can get my hands on Smash early. I’m hoping we will get a trailer for Zelda U, a release date for Smash 3DS and possibly Smash Wii U, a final name for X and release date, Bayonetta 2 release date, Yoshi Yarn release date, SMTxFE trailer and release date, Fatal Frame announced for West, Monster Hunter 4 release date for West, Mario Strikers 3, Dragon Quest X announced for West, Miyamoto’s new IP, an announcement on what the hell QOL is, and more third party support.

Nintendo didn’t even say it was a pre-recorded direct. Direct wasn’t even mentioned for E3. People seriously need to stop winging and give it a change. Make it clear that its going be different.
All that I want is good games. Reveal Zelda U and Metroid (3DS and/or U) and I’ll be happy. I don’t care about silly shows.
