Nintendo Of America President Says “We Think Deeply About Our Product Names”

One thing that Nintendo fans are baffled by is the company’s recent naming conventions for their consoles. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime says he is aware of confusion regarding the company’s product names, but believes calling the New Nintendo 3DS, the New Nintendo 3DS, really communicated to consumers that it’s an improved Nintendo 3DS device.

“We think deeply about all our product names and really try and come up with a naming convention that makes sense for the consumer that communicates what’s going on. We believe that this communicates that this is an improved version of the 3DS line.”

      1. It really is uncanny how naive and blind Nintendo can be.

Saying that “New3DS” or “Wii U” is a good/logical name or anything close, is complete ignorance. Especially the “New3DS”… that takes the world record.
I mean, comon!!…. the damn system has **Super** Nintendo themed buttons.
Why not just call it **SUPER** 3DS!?
But no… that would be too smart… Now everytime someone searches new 3DS instead of new 3DS they get listings for new 3DS instead of a new 3DS.

        Logic much?

    1. 3DS makes sense though because it’s pretty much a 3D DS… it’s just the latest models name that is freaking retarded.

      1. Ridley, the Angel of Death

*points to NES to SNES* Of course, back then, people had a bigger imagination when it came to names. Today, people apparently are more stupid, or less imaginative, & need the name to have a number in it to know it’s a new console. Of course, I bet there was the occasional idiot in the 90s that thought a Super Nintendo Entertainment System was just an attachment to the Nintendo Entertainment System.

    1. Most, from NES-Wii. Gameboy-DS. But Wii U is not a creative name, just confusing. 3DS gets the point across that it’s a 3D system, but it’s just the number 3 after the DS part. This entire generation has uncreative names for their consoles. Wii U-Just a U add to their last generation system, PS4-The forth Playstation. Xbox One-It’s not the bloody 1st Xbox.
This is coming from a Wii U owner since launch in 2012, I love the system, but I see where people are coming from. I have been fortunate enough that my Mother has never been confused about the name. Why? Because unlike most, I actually explained that the Wii U is a new system and then showed her the E3 trailer the console. She instantly understood at that point. It’s not difficult, it’s just a lot of people making a mountain out of a molehill when explain the Wii U…

      1. Super Wii sounds better than Wii U but I still think that still sounds stupid. I’d prefer if they didn’t use “Wii” at all. Ugh.

          1. Oh, wait. Nevermind. Now I see. I didn’t read your comment correctly. I thought you were suggesting a different name. :P

              1. Well that’s good to hear. And I hope you enjoy it. :D Although, it wasn’t really working out for me. It lacked a lot of games I wanted to play and I got tired of Nintendo’s decisions, so I traded it in for a PS4. :\

                      1. I was actually going to keep my Wii U and try saving up for a PS4 but when the Gamestop trade in deal came up, I just couldn’t refuse it. I wanted the PS4 since it was revealed. I hope I don’t sound like a fanboy when I say this, but it is pretty much everything I wish the Wii U was. I like it a lot. XD But of course, I understand people have different opinions and it could be the other way around to some people. :P

                            1. I haven’t actually looked at that yet. I’ve heard of it but I don’t know what it is. Other than the screenshots I saw of it on the store. I should probably check it out.

                              1. I can’t choose what I want next though. Cause there’s a lot that I want. I’m mainly looking at The Witcher 3, Final Fantasy Type 0 HD, Shadow of Mordor, and Dragon Age Inquisition. I was considering Destiny as well but… Idk. I’m not really into FPS. But if it’s good I could get it. Looks kinda interesting to me.

                              2. I feel you, I’m in the same situation. There are 3 games coming up in the next 1 1/2 weeks alone that I’m interested in (including FF Type-0) and I can’t decide which ones to get first. There are some I had skipped in the past I still need to get as well. And there’s even more coming up in the next months.
But yea, out of the games you have mentioned, I think you can’t go too wrong with FF, The Witcher and DA: Inquisition. I’m STILL playing Destiny, so I personally would recommend it, considering it’s pretty impressive that a game has managed to keep me busy for about 6 months already, but I understand it’s not for everyone.
Can’t say much about Shadow of Mordor though, not too informed about it.

                        1. The nintendo magistrate

my name for the wii u would be Nintendo G Station and for the new 3ds i like super 3ds but how about the nintendo 3ds plus?

                    1. Wii Ultra sounds much better. It sounds like what SUPER Nintendo Entertainment System did for Nintendo Entertainment System, could have been what Wii ULTRA did for Wii.
However, I know that they were going for We You(Wii U…)

              2. As much as you don’t want to admit… those are actually decent names.
Its like calling a movie in their respective sequels. EG: Spiderman, Spiderman 2 etc. People can easily search and distinguish the movies.

                1. Stop lying to yourself… If you honestly think “New 3DS” is a good name, then you’re a delusional idiot. And even if he mentions nothing about the Wii U, he said “We think deeply about all our product names and really try and come up with a naming convention that makes sense for the consumer that communicates what’s going on”
Which implies he’s talking about the names in general… Maybe you should read the article and actually understand what he said.

                2. Yeah, the name of both systems New 3DS and Wii U are bad.

Little Johnny: “Mom I want the New3DS?
Mom: “But you already have a 3DS.”
Johnny: “But I want the New3ds, it is so much better.”
Mom: “But Johnny, your 3ds is still working like it was when it was new.”

                  At the store:
Mom: “I would like to buy a New 3ds.
Clerk: Certainly, would you like the old 3ds or the new 3ds.
                  Mom: “Like i said I want a New 3DS.
Clerk: “Okay, we have the old new 3ds or the new new 3ds. Which one would you like?
Mom: “What?! Turns around walks out the store.

            1. Yeah right.

And then you essentially called us Americans idiots when you said that “bringing the normal New 3DS over would confuse consumers”.

            2. “We think deeply about all our product names and really try and come up with a naming convention that makes sense for the consumer that communicates what’s going on. We believe that this communicates that this is an improved version of the 3DS line.”

Because 3DS Advanced or Super 3DS apparently weren’t stupid enough

Also Wii 2 anybody, just calling it that would’ve given you tons of free money

            3. Personally I think they should of gone the route of the game boy did with names. They did game boy then color (to show it was in color) then the advance(as it was an advancement of the last one) then the sp (idk what so ment but it may of ment the folding part). Not to mention the irksome nightmare of even buying the device “I want a new 3ds” “you want a new 3ds right?” “Yes a new one” “here you go” -gives a unopened 3ds box- “no the new one” “it is new” “the newwwww one” “it is” “ahhhh the amiibo one” “oh the new 3ds!” -gets it- “do you want a new new 3ds or used new 3ds.” -stands there even more confused and leaves-

                  1. Pretty sure it stands for special.
The explanation is even still up in the FAQs on Nintendo’s customer service page, just checked. :)

                    1. The nintendo magistrate

hmm.. might be for america but when i worked in my game shop it was known as the gameboy advance special project but might differ with different regions

What’s so fucking deep about the name “New” 3ds? Sounds like to me you slapped a name on the fucker and hoped it will sell.

                      1. My Wind Waker Is Bigger (I.A.B.A.B)

Um pretty sure you read one of my comments were I deliberately stated that I was fucking 18.

                2. To be fair… they did the same with the “New” Super Mario Bros. thing… they just slapped a “New” to it even though the only new thing was the graphics and a few new items.
But anyways, how hard is it to educate yourself about the product you want to buy? I know there are a lot of lazy people, but come on!! Most people are online and they can spare a few minutes to know the difference about each system… I don’t think people is stupid… I think they are lazy as fuck…
Besides, the competition doesn’t have names that have changed a lot or do they? They just slap a 2, 3 or 4 to it and in Xbox’s case… Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox One (now that one can be confusing for some)…
Meh… I don’t know, it’s not hard for me to distinguish them from each other, even if I don’t do research… but that is just me…

                  1. I remember the day Microsoft revealed the next Xbox console. I was at school and I was searching up “Xbox One” on Google but I couldn’t find any info on it! I was only getting info about the first Xbox system XD

                  2. Ridley, the Angel of Death

Some people, apparently a lot according to everyone dissing the name choices on here, apparently need the fact it’s a new console entirely spelled out for them. In which case, they need a number next to the name. Imagine if the SNES came out today instead of in the 90s, I bet there would be a ton of idiots that don’t know it’s an upgrade of an old console.

              1. I’m sorry, but I simply can’t take it seriously! Great part of the initial failure for the Wii U was its name that sounded like the previous console and caused major confusion within those very same consumers you wanted to cater to! Then there’s the “new 3DS”. What if you come up with another version, the old one will still be the “new 3DS”!

You’re not putting any thought into your naming sense!

                1. The whole Wii U “sounds like previous generation” argument to me is just plain stupid. The Playstation has changed the numbers behind the name, yet the drooling masses can seem to differentiate, Xbox goes from XBox, to XBox 360, to XBox One, and Wii to Wii U is “more” confusing?

The imagery of the U on the Wii U looks like II, U is phonically similar to two, and people get confused? No, it’s confusing cause people make it way more confusing than it is and are used to Nintendo changing the names of the consoles cause we all like to forget that NES, SNES. and N64 had a similar naming theme to them due to the Gamecube and Wii being more named for aspects of the console itself rather than the Nintendo name branding. Now the New 3DS is genuinely more confusing as it’s actually a bit awkward to say and reads oddly.

              2. BULLSHIT. Nintendo, just because it didn’t have bad results when you transitioned from NES to SNES doesn’t mean that will happen again. I think that 70% of the failure that is the Wii U is because of its name. People who aren’t familiar with videogames think the Wii U is just an accessory for the original Wii. I think the New Nintendo 3DS is the worst, though. Come on, are you really THAT stupid?

                1. Ridley, the Angel of Death

Would it really be a bad thing if people not familiar with video games didn’t realize it wasn’t the new console & remained with the old one? lol There would be a lot less video games trying to cater to mainstream gamers, that I don’t entirely consider true gamers because they tend to only play a certain game genre & never try anything else.

              3. Reggie, you couldn’t be more wrong.

Saying it’s “New” is the same thing as saying “It’s not used”, to a gamer these days, or heck, even to an average consumer.

You should have stuck with the naming conventions that went into your earlier systems.
Super NES, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, all of these names were wildly different from one-another and brought the point home that, yeah, this is a whole DIFFERENT system.

                It’s not about being new.
                It’s about DIFFERENTIATING yourself.

              4. 3DS -> New 3DS is not the worst. Wii – Wii U, and even DS -> 3DS, are quite terrible. I do agree with him about New 3DS being good for communicating.

              5. The one thing wiiu has going for it (and reason I bought it) was the wii I had previously sounded like it was gonna break (made tons of noises like it would break apart and shatter the disk) the titles on it were a draw to me and all the features of the system appealed to me as well. I got tired of sony’s console and never been an Microsoft gamer. The straw the broke the camels back for play station was pretty much the ps4 could do everything the previous version did and most ps3 games play at 720p where the standard on ps4 is 1080p. Not to mention I don’t wanna spend a ton of money on a console for one game. Same goes for the new 3ds only difference is that personally I was wanting the version with face plates (why everywhere but America -.- I never know) they have a bad marketing department cus it sounded like a child was there in the board room “ahhhhhhhh slap new on the name and bam it’s different” the xl version of 3ds and amiibo version I don’t like for many reasons. The inevitable screen peeking by passers by, the inability to place it in one’s pocket( that drew me to the original 3ds that I could put it in my pocket), and not to mention I prefer my handhelds to be small not large.

              6. Wii U should have been Wii 2. I’m serious, it would have been a lot better. People would know what it fucking is at least. It’s not a tablet add on.

                  1. Better yet, the Ultra Nintendo Entertainment System.

Or U-NES, for short. Let’s them keep the “U” moniker while properly showing that it’s a whole new system.

                    1. Haha, I thought of that same name way back when this console was revealed. I don’t know why they did not use it..

              7. they must be out of their fucking mind if they think they communicated with the consumer with those names. straight out of their fucking mind.

              8. So deeply that they turn derp….
on a side note, New Nintendo 3DS XL should have been called Super 3DS…..nice branding problems you are setting yourself up for, Nin….

              9. Oh and that’s why Wii U and Wii confused some people, and that’s why you didn’t bring the New 3DS (NORMAL) to North America cause you said it would be to many and confuse people? Yet you now just said you come up with names that help the consumer? Bitch please, your games are top notch, but your business practices are a fail lol.

              10. …. Oh yeah, I can TOTALLY see that…

                Wii + U = Wii U
                3 + DS = 3DS
                New + 3DS = New 3DS

                SUCH GENIUS!!

Seriously… at least Microsoft was TRYING to make their consoles have different names… the keyword being “trying”

                  1. No it doesn’t. Microsoft knows how to advertise their products, unlike Nintendo. No one even referred to the original Xbox as “Xbox One” because the successor was referred to as “The 360”

              11. Super 3DS would have been worlds better than New 3DS.. Even though it’s not really super ANYTHING. It’s just another 3DS with a few improvements.

              12. Good ol’ Nintendo, always showing how stubborn they can be at times.

Along the lines of “We are aware it has caused confusion amongst are consumers, but WE FEEL it communicated the product well”

That could not be anymore contradicting.

That’s great and all but you realize your consumers and fans are the ones buying the majority of your products, not just you Reggie. So how about you think about what your fans want, instead of what you think they want.

                  1. I more hypothesize Wii stands for Wireless interactive interface

While Wii U stands for Wireless interactive interface Upgraded

Just a coincidence that the acronym sounded light hearted and fun so they ran with those. That and having double meanings is kinda a think I find the Japanese enjoy at least in manga. Personally I think the Wii U name is pretty nifty, but I have eccentric tastes so whatevs.

                    1. Ridley, the Angel of Death

If only they made it obvious in the name that Wii & Wii U were originally acronyms, like with NES & SNES. *shrug* But as I’ve said to some other commenters on here, would it really have made a difference? With there being so many people into video games these days, there are bound to be a few idiots among them that don’t realize that the extra letter means it’s a new console.

              13. Nintendo spends billions of dollars in R&D just coming up with those names (New 3DS, Wii U). Give them a break guys.

                1. Personally I think they need a new rnd department and a new marketing supervisor… Their ads assume that you know nothing -.- they made an ad explaining what amiibo does

              14. I hope Nintendo ditches the word “Wii” with their next home console and gives it a more cool name. Take Gamecube for example. That was a cool name that represented exactly what it was. A cube that played games. The naming went downhill with the Wii. When I first heard the name “Wii U”, I totally face-palmed. STOP WITH THE STUPID NAMING, NINTENDO!

                  1. Ridley, the Angel of Death

Speak for yourself. >.< Gamecube was an awesome name at the time. Better than the uncreative name Playstation 2 during that generation.

                    1. You hatin? XD The name PlayStation is simple and smart. Doesn’t always have to be a “creative” name. Creative names sound dumb. Lol.

                      1. Ridley, the Angel of Death

No. I’m just saying it’s a boring name. Gamecube sounded funner. And it fit the console’s design.

              16. They could’ve called it “Nintendo 3DSi”, just like with the DSi which was a better version of the DS.

                1. Ridley, the Angel of Death

I got a better, more creative name: Nintendo n3DS. WHY DIDN’T THEY GO WITH THIS NAME!?! There had to have been at least one guy on the developmental team that thought of that name!

              17. Me: Yo, dude! I just got a New Nintendo 3DS!
Friend: Huh? Didn’t that come out…like…4 years ago?
Me: Nooo, maaannn. The “New” Nintendo 3DS!
Friend: Ahh, you mean the Nintendo 2DS.
                Me: >__>
                Friend: <__<
                Me: *shows the new system*
Friend: Wait, what? LOL! You mean this a new, 'NEW' Nintendo 3DS XL?! God damnit, Nintendo! 😝

                *ultimate facepalm*

Sadly, this was a real message exchange I had with one of my friends over a series of text messages, albeit condensed a few lines. The same series of texts occured with the launch of the original Nintendo 3DS and the Wii U and has lasted for years since then. *sighs*

Nintendo, get your head out of the gutter with the naming conventions. While you certainly don't have to go the Sony or Apple route as you clearly like to make each console unique, the Wii U would have been much easier to understand as the Super Wii. The New Nintendo 3DS, the Super Nintendo 3DS.

                It's really not hard, Nintendo.

You've had "Super" and "Advance" generations of systems before. Use those naming conventions that your core fans and gamers know about.

              18. They really had to think deeply about the name “New” 3DS. Wow, I mean, wow. This has to be some kind of joke. I’m hoping now more than ever that the name for the 9th generation system Nintendo has doesn’t suck.

                1. You mean the seventh gen home console and portable systems for Nintendo. While the umbrella of gaming generations covers both Sony and Microsoft, Nintendo systems have their own generations they go by.

                  Home Consoles:
NES, SNES, N64, GC, Wii, and Wii U

                  Portable Systems:
G&W, GB, GBC, GBA, DS, and 3DS

So, you should really be looking forward to the seventh-gen of Nintendo systems if you’re a fan of Nintendo games and hardware.

              19. Wii U is the worst console name in the history of consoles. Ironically it may actually be the best console.

              20. They could do something like idk …… -wait five seconds- add a plus to the version that’s normal sized aka the 3ds+ so people know it has more than the normal one

              21. 30 seconds to come up with putting “New” in front of “3DS” does not constitute thinking deeply about product names- if anything, it shows you either don’t care or don’t know what you’re doing.

I really, REALLY think Nintendo needs to start cleaning house in many of its departments because things have just been going downhill lately.

              22. In my opinion i think they should’ve they should have named it Nintendo 3DS+ or Plus cause it just sounds better and there’s no confusion and it explains the product a lit more than the word “New” and it does nothing to explain the newness in new 3DS but adding the + or Word Plus would say to the consumer huh Nintendo 3DS+/plus must mean it has new features since the + is on there cause + usually means more’ so nintendo chose a bad name in my opinion.

                1. Huge problem with that: what would that communicate that “XL” doesn’t already communicate? Really, “+” is an additive element to a system: one that tends to be just another optional quality of it to experience certain features or games more fully, such as Wii MotionPlus. It doesn’t make sense doing that for the New Nintendo 3DS XL because you would then be calling it the Nintendo 3DS+ XL….yeah, that’s a mouthful to try and market.

I can see why Nintendo chose “New” over “Super”, that being said. But the Wii “U” is just stupid…

Americans associate “+” or “Plus” with “more” instead of “hey, this is a newer system”.

Super Nintendo 3DS works just as well and makes a lot more sense, but then people would expect it to be an entirely next-gen platform. Once again, it makes sense why “New” Nintendo 3DS XL had its namesake. It’s just a stupid one, though.

However, Wii 2 would have been so much better than Wii U (and it makes sense colloquially…”We Too”). It could have ended the “Wii” brand on a high note… *sighs*

If only Nintendo marketing wasn’t ran by a bunch of monkeys.

                2. Yes I get the while thing on the plus department but the “new” 3ds isn’t a good name what so ever -.- it is one of the most confusing products ever to buy because when a person ask for a new or used item… Aka you have to say a “new new 3ds or used new 3ds” which makes it even more confusing that before and makes it even harder to buy anything people only get what you mean after saying the amiibo 3ds. I stated this earlier

              23. This statement is trolling to the nth power.. One thing I hate about nintendo products lately are their choices of confusing product names.. can’t believe I’m saying this, but f**k that, nintendo.. you’re not fooling anybody with this statement..

              24. Wii, DS and 3DS were good names, Wii U and New 3DS are not.

                Cheap talk, Nintendo!

I would prefer names like ” Super Wii”, “Wii 2” or even “Nintendo U” or, I dunno, SOMETHING DIFFERENT? This name subject pisses me off a lot because this is the very first time Nintendo re-uses the name for the home console (SNES doesn’t account because “Super Nintendo” became more popular), the consequences are the biggest marketing failures Nintendo is currently facing.

For the handheld, names like 3DS+ (plus), 3DS Advance and such, would be better.

                1. Think abbreviation-wise:

Nintendo U would be “U”…it doesn’t work on a social basis.
                  Super Wii would be “SWii”…ugh.
Wii U is “Wii U”…makes sense…sort of. But it makes the sound of an ambulance.
Wii 2 is “Wii 2″…WHY DIDN’T THEY CHOOSE THIS INSTEAD?!

“Wii 2″…”We Too”…think of how great that would have been to end the brand on such a better note. UGH…

              25. Listen to all u xboners. NEW 3DS is perfect. I guess u nerds hate ps4 name? I mean cmon. Ps ps2 pspart3 ps part 4 the final chapter. RETARDED! get original sony. I knkw ur going BANKRUPT (and rightfully so) but my lord change the name of your consoles. But i guess its hard to when each concole is IDENTICLE to the last just better grafx. And xbone makes NO SENSE. its NOT a ALL IN ONE SYSTEM anymore since rhere ditching the gay kinect. So now its a xbox almost one? Stop hating on the one company that SAVED THE VID GAME UNIVERSE. and put atari. Sega. Nec. 3Do cdi out of buisness/vid game market. Nintendo is the ONLY tru vid game company. Period!

              26. to clearafy
DS because it has dual screens
Wii U stands for Wii Universe
3DS because its a DS that displays 3D images
3DS XL Three dimension Dual Screen Extra Large (don’t you love abirvating)
                -names start getting weird below-
2DS its a 3DS that dosent display 3D images but still has a number because its a 3DS
New 3DS its new… and a 3DS… (hits head on table out of stupidity)
New 3DS XL its a New extera large 3DS… (face palms while hiting head on table)

              27. Can’t help but laugh I’m afraid when I first read the headline. I agree it conveys the message it really is the “NEW” 3DS but they should really consider the customers who are looking for a new 3DS not a “new” 3DS and how it conveys the message of whether it’s the “new” 3DS or a new 3DS. Oops.. mixed it up but you get my point. Confusing and absurd. This is why I like Nintendo, they stick out for various reasons.

              28. Ridley, the Angel of Death

In today’s society with so many people that haven’t played video games for over 20 years, Wii U & Nintendo New 3DS were terrible names. In fact, I bet the NES & SNES might have confused some of today’s gamers if they released in this era instead of the late 80s/early 90s. If the name isn’t entirely different or there isn’t a number next to it like with the Playstation brand, there are going to be more people that are ignorant & don’t realize this is actually a new console, instead thinking it’s an attachment or something. At this point, I think it’s pointless to whine over a fucking name! Especially with Wii U! We can’t go back in time & change it. This isn’t Back to the Future! Of course, considering the Xbox One name didn’t cause confusion even though it should have for a majority of today’s gamers, maybe the problem isn’t the name at all but the fact it’s Nintendo. *cough* I’ll stop before I go any further into conspiracy theories….. BUT THERE IS ONE GOING ON!!! YOU ARE ALL BLIND SHEEP!!! ALL OF YOU!!! THE WORLD IS OUT TO GET NINTENDO & IT’S FANS!!! IT’S A CONSPIRACY!!! lol
