The Strong National Museum of Play in New York has announced 15 finalists for its very own World Video Game Hall of Fame. Thousands of votes from over 100 different countries decided the 15 finalists which are (in no particular order):

- Final Fantasy
- Grand Theft Auto III
- John Madden Football
- The Legend of Zelda
- Minecraft
- Nürburgring
- The Oregon Trail
- Pokemon Red and Green
- Sid Meier’s Civilization
- The Sims
- Sonic The Hedgehog
- Space Invaders
- Street Fighter III
- Tomb Raider
The Museum of Play advises that “The World Video Game Hall of Fame recognizes electronic games that meet the following criteria: icon-status, the game is widely recognized and remembered; longevity, the game is more than a passing fad and has enjoyed popularity over time; geographical reach, the game meets the above criteria across international boundaries; and influence, the game has exerted significant influence on the design and development of other games, on other forms of entertainment, or on popular culture and society in general.”
The final inductees to get a place in the hall of fame, chosen from the 15 finalists, will be announced on May 5 at the The Strong museum.

These vote-based lists never work that well at all, of course this one would be a joke too. What I find most insulting is that they couldn’t even get their criteria straight. Picking Final Fantasy instead of Dragon Quest is a travesty. I guess it makes sense if they’re doing it because they consider it to be more influential (which I think it’s arguable, but understandable), but then again they have SFIII instead of SFII.
SFII vs SFIII is a tough one. I’d think SFII should have the nomination because of what a groundbreaking fighting game it was, it is basically what Super Mario Bros was to platforming but to fighting games. But I know that SFIII is considered THE best fighting game of all time by many people…

Influence is literally listed as one of the criteria for election, and even if it wasn’t, you’d still be missing the point of my post.
And you should try to read ALL the criteria, not just the two you mention. If you considered all then there’s no contradiction in their elections, tastes aside.
That’s my point. The criteria don’t make any sense BECAUSE some of the picks directly contradict it. See SFIII.

Who say I don’t read it? Let me tell you a secret: “World Video Game Hall of Fame” is not just the headline, is also the title of the whole thing. I think is safe to assume that fame is one of the most influential criteria.
Anyway SFIII meets most of the criteria, that’s MY point.
And SFII fits much better with the rest of the picks and the criteria as a whole, which means SFIII is a strange pick that, in my view, discredits the rest. Not to mention, if fame was the main criterion, you’d see Ocarina and FFVII up there instead of the originals.

Both SF II and SF III have well fame, maybe SF II has more, but it’s not a big difference (FF and DQ, on the other hand, the difference on fame is huge outside japan). Now, if you considered the rest of the criteria, the difference is more notorious. Like I said earlier, tastes aside (this people have also their own opinion)

If with that “rest of the criteria” you’re addressing the SF2vs3 case, I’m sorry but you’re complete, utterly wrong. Even disregarding popularity, SFII is still more recognizable and influential, both culturally and within the industry. If you’re addressing the DQvsFF argument, then I agree. Still, if they pick FF for those reasons, they should pick SFII for those same reasons. If not (SFIII’s case), they should pick DQ. It’s as simple as that, I can’t put it any more clearly.

Okay, I did not want to write much because English is not my mother tongue, but here we go…
Lets say you have 10 criteria, and you need to choose between 2 games. The first game is better on 6/10 criteria, and the other on 4, so you choose the first one. Now, you have another 2 games, and again, one have 6 and other 4… BUT, that 6 criteria of the winner are NOT the same of the first winner, they just have 2 criteria on common. No contradiction, no logic hole, just opinions when you choose the better on every criteria. Greetings and excuse my English.
As I said before, that’s not what’s happening here. You’d be completely right if that were the case, it’s just not. SFII is just that much more influential AND popular. What you can’t do is change the weight of the criteria based on the games, which is what seems to be happening here. All fit but SFIII, which is the oddball.
Actually, I just checked the source myself. It’s a typo. SFII is the nominated title, which renders this whole conversation moot.

For those getting upset about the finalists. Doom, Tetris, Pac-Man, Pong, World of Warcraft and Super Mario Bros. were all already inducted into the hall of fame last year.
Zelda better make it in there, LEGEND OF ZELDA FOR LIFE!!
My opinion is should be sonic. If they do like last year then it will be about 5 of them making it.

The original Final Fantasy? That one’s pretty mediocre in comparison with it’s future installments.
I know it introduced many RPG elements and pretty much saved the whole genre, but you just can’t compare it to FFVI, FFVII, FFIX, FFX or even other entries honestly.

I was going to ask where is Super Mario Bros but someone already clarified that for me. So my question is, is Chrono Trigger already in this Hall of Fame? If it’s not, why isn’t it a nominee, damn it!?
For what’s worth, you can actually vote for your favorite finalist on the site. Zelda is on the lead with a 41% of votes, then goes Pokémon with 22%, and then Sonic with a 7%. It doesn’t have many votes, though.
I’m surprised Minecraft isn’t leading… I won’t be surprised if it does win though. :l
