The Nikkei: Nintendo’s next system “seems to be progressing well”

Respected news publication, The Nikkei, which is usually spot on with rumours, has published a new article about the Kyoto-based company today after Nintendo published their latest sales figures. One of The Nikkei’s sources which is close to Nintendo says that development on the next generation system “seems to be progressing well,” though it is thought that a launch won’t happen before the next spring “at the earliest.”

To offset the Switch’s decline and get back on the growth track, many are calling on the company to introduce a new console. One is rumored to be due out next year. “Development seems to be progressing well,” a source close to Nintendo told Nikkei Asia. “But a product launch won’t happen before next spring at the earliest.”

  1. As long as everything is backward compatible, especially the virtual console then I’m good with it

    1. It will be sticky so it can stick to anything. Just throw it somewhere and it sticks. Oh and its cardboard.

  2. Nintendo has to nail the backwards compatibility for their next console. Love them or hate them, but Sony and XBox are so good at making sure users can migrate their libraries.

  3. The new system
Will release when Switch sales drop below 15 million a year. They are still selling over 20 million a year. This year they are expected to hit 18-20 so it is slowly dropping.
I do except the next system to be backwards compatible and still use cartridges like the switches. It is something easily done and gaming architectures has not really changed at all so expect that but expect the games to cost the $10 more because many games will be over the 16gb sd card size they use now for games. This is why TOTK is $70. This I am fine with if it allows us to have the newer games.
I also suspect it will be 4K in dock mode at least so expect a new dock and will run 1080p at least in handheld. We will possibly have an OLED screen at launch but may not to keep pricing down. I also expect it to retail for between $4-500 at launch which I would happily pay as long as all the things I mentioned above are met.

    1. I could see them sticking with 720p for handheld mode, simply to improve battery life. 1080p would be nice, though.

  4. All I want for the next system is for it to:
    1. Play in 4K docked and 1080 handheld
    2. Improved battery life
    3. Backwards compatibility
    4. A cheaper online service
    5. Vastly improved virtual library

  5. They have to release something eventually. Just time will tell. But I bet it’s gonna be sleek and sexy.
