Ryan Schneider of Insomniac Games was recently quizzed about what games he believes have in some way or another been influenced by his company’s Rachet and Clank franchise, his implausible answer; Super Mario Galaxy.
Yeah, I think that it’s flattering… well OK, first of all, there was a PlayStation 2 game which I won’t name, that was more or less a direct rip-off of Ratchet and Clank. There’s evidence all around us I think, of certain games that have borrowed from Ratchet and Clank. One that we’re even extremely flattered by is Super Mario Galaxy, with their spherical worlds; we did spherical worlds in Going Commando, and Up Your Arsenal. It would be amazing to think that Miyamoto-san thought that was so cool that he wanted to incorporate it into Mario Galaxy. Granted, he’s doing it in a different way, but it’s still a spherical world, so it’s flattering to see those sorts of things.

Ah yes, because noone’s ever done spheres before! My God, what an egotistical jackass, he has officially earned a kick in the balls should I ever encounter him.
What a dumbass comment, of course the worlds will naturally be round, what since they may have done it in Ratchet and Clank, all others should do square worlds or triangle shaped worlds to not copy insomniac Games. Bunch of BS. Thats like saying mario soccer copied fifa since they use a soccer ball in there game.
Actually, it’s more like saying Mario Galaxy might be slightly influenced by a PS2 platformer that came out way before people knew about the existence of a Mario Galaxy. And he’s a dumb jackass for fantasizing about that? You guys are classy. You do know that videogame devs borrow and learn from each other, right? Otherwise we wouldn’t have most of the games we have now.
It’s possible. He didn’t say he stole they idea, he didn’t even say that his idea was completely original. All the examples Sony haters keep bringing up is that spheres have been seen before in games, but not in the same way R&C and Mario are doing it. Compare apples to apples if you’re gonna compare at all, please.
Key sentence from the quote: “It would be amazing to think that Miyamoto-san thought that was so cool that he wanted to incorporate it into Mario Galaxy.”
It seems pretty silly to me. Just because you have a spherical world, you HAVE to have stolen it from them? I mean planets re spherical, you can’t get away from that. It’s like me saying that the queen stole the idea of using a knife and fork from me!
*slaps thigh*
*wonders why he did that*
No, I seriously doubt Miyamoto went: “I know! Let’s copy Ratchet & Clank!” His thought processes are rather more complex than the average PS2 developer and will focus more on his own ideas, his own way of doing it and making Super Mario Galaxy a very Miyamoto and Nintendo product.
