According to industry rumours floating around the Internet Sony are preparing to cut back on the entry level specifications for its successor to the PlayStation Portable to enable it to compete against Nintendo’s 3DS with regards to pricing. According to a French site Sony has basically halved the RAM in its Next Generation Portable and has removed the internal flash memory altogether. Do you think Sony has a chance at cracking Nintendo’s market-share with its forthcoming Next Generation Portable?

nah Sony sucks, They’ll lose to Nintendo just like they have these past few years
… they downgraded ?
this will probably stop me from getting an NGP in the future,
it’s either the good stuff or nothing.
Seriously Sony, are they that desperate for sales?
I thought they had good selling consoles no matter the price because they had good specs.
now they are downgrading the thing so it’s equally prices to the 3DS?
So this thing is now officially weaker than the 3DS.
with ONLY downloadable titles, no flash memory?
no thank you Sony.
I have my 3DS, and I love it.
no NGP for me.
Even with it’s downgraded specs it’s still more powerful then the 3DS so I don’t know how you think the 3DS is?! And it’s a smart move because the titles coming out on that handheld will compete well with the 3DS. Uncharted, Kill Zone, Resistance and Final Fantasy in PS3 graphics, round the same price as a 3DS! Nintendo should be worried. By the way it’s not download games only it uses something called a memory stick, you buy games on. Something you buy for your DS called a Catridge, quite similar!
You are very true, because they will also have unannounced Call of Duty games coming out on it. Plus, if the RAM wasn’t halved because of the competition, the 3Ds wouldn’t be a match for it.
I’m as excited as anyone for the NGP, but so far only 8 games have been announced, with one third-party (CoD). The system has 6 months until launch. The 3DS had 30 titles announced a year before launch. Frankly, the NGP’s launch looks pretty pathetic, because we all know the first-party games won’t launch with the system (unless you want them to be crappy ports), and I’d very much rather play CoD on a PS3 (If ever).
Halved the RAM? That alone makes me not wanting to get it. Nintendo has Sonys next hand held in the corner
No thanks. My eyes have been locked on the 3DS since it was announced.
No offence but i have to. Disagree with most these comments i mean the 3ds is to high for what it overs really and knowing sony there system going be about what the should be.
Never mind re read miles comment and sony done f uped only download games
Did you guys miss the part saying they were cutting back on the ENTRY level model specs.? It does not say that they’re cutting back the specs on all of the models. Sony’s systems were never really cheap, so the only way they can release a system that can compete without losing profits is to cut back on the hardware. If you want an NGP with better specs then you’ll just have to pay more for a better model.
Most things that aren’t in the “entry level specs” won’t be any any of the models. For example, RAM. The games will be made so that they will run on the entry level model. Games will not be made that require more RAM, because only the minority of players would buy them. By creating a game that uses more RAM than the entry level model, the creator would be cutting out a huge chunk of their potential audience. Because of this, they won’t create games requiring so much RAM. Because of this, Sony isn’t going to make a model that has more RAM. Internal flash memory may come, but the halved RAM will be permanent in all models, because there will be no reason to create a model with more RAM.
What this guy said. For some reason people believe Nintendo/Sony are going to release a 3DS Lite/PSP 2000 that runs games the entry-level model can’t. This isn’t Apple we’re talking about guys; as long as it’s in the same generation, games will work on all systems. You won’t get screwed when the next console comes, because you can still play all the games release for the system as a whole.
But I think what he’s talking about is RAM for other stuff. For example, the PSP-3000 had more RAM than both previous models, which didn’t effect gameplay at all. What it did change was browser speed, possible multitasking, improved OS, faster downloads, etc. Not a new system, but it just shows Sony had set a higher standard for the original PSP they couldn’t reach.
Lol at people thinking it is less powerful than the 3DS. The only thing affected is the RAM will go from 512 to 256 and no internal storage. You will still be able to by game cards and use an external storage like 3DS. The NGP specs still blow the 3DS away in terms of raw power. It still has a quad-core processor and a significantly more powerful GPU.
Dude, the 3DS has 128 Video Card RAM, and 128 MB RAM. The NGP has to split the RAM (albeit not that evenly) so it evens out, although overall the 3DS is faster because it utilizes dedicated processors and memory for each. The NGP doesn’t have a video card or sound processor, so 1-2 of those “quad-cores” are used for sound and video. And finally, saying quad core doesn’t mean crap. You could have a single core processor with 5 GHz, and a Quad core with 1 GHz for each processor (or 4 overall). The single core processor would be (roughly) the same power (probably much faster though). Depends on what you’re doing; some games/programs run faster multi-core, while some run at the same speed both ways. Also, we have no idea what the “quad cores'” speed will be, so it might be weaker than an NES for all we know (:P).
You’re wrong about the separate GPU part, it has been confirmed that the NGP will have both a CPU and a GPU (each 4 cores), so yes it will be significantly more powerful in the graphics & CPU departments.
Also the RAM in the NGP hasn’t been given a specific use yet, for all we know there could be separate ram on the GPU chip dedicated to graphics.
Link? Can’t recall that detail. Would be great though; practically unheard of to put a dedicated RAM for the GPU in mobile objects.
I know Wikipedia definitely shows the separate CPU/GPU specs (with citations/confirmed by Sony) and I read somewhere else that the NGP will still keep its separate 128mb of video ram.
Either way this thing would still be significantly more powerful than the 3DS (256mb general ram + 128mb video ram) I’m usually really supportive of Nintendo’s handhelds but the 3DS has been a huge letdown for me…
Doesn’t the NGP have a four core processor, and an extremely good greaphics card? Damn them! Powerful, and cheap! Regardless, my loyalties lie with nintendo. I will never sink so low as to buy a sony powerhouse. especially if they are starting cloud computing. where is the nostalgia and ownership in that!?
Ha! I knew it would be really expensive to begin with, and now, to compete with the price, their removing any advantage it could have had.
yeah RAM is important as well as the internal memory.. but then ppl could still buy a memory card… no sony.. do something stupid again plz… I want you to go down in flames for all the little fanboys here and there on Capcom Unity… MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
MH3DS
SONY is officially retarded
why make it so the system sux
im fine with my 3ds, xbox 360, wii, and ipod touch never needed sony and never will.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA now what will fanboys say? ROFL here right now. I was almost planning on buying it.. but now its like, NINTENDO’S GREEN PAPER, NINTENDO GETS PAID, NEVER GOING PORTABLE and what not.. I could go on here
I’m not giving up on Nintendo, so Ima get a 3DS, despite its low battery power, I’m gonna be playing it indoors mainly, so I’ll always be near an electrical outlet, besides, there’ll only be like 3 or 4 games worth actually getting on NGP, like Dissidia, Final Fantasy, and maybe something else, but otherwise its looking like just straight up PS3 ports, well the 3DS is similar, but at least they ACTUALLY bother to change stuff rather than just straight up porting a game
Dude, I went on a 35 hourflight, and played the 3DS all the way (DS games) for around 10 hours. It never went below 2 bars. You have nothing to worry about. 3DS games go 5 hours , as long as you don’t put brighness on high.
And if you’re really worried about it, buy a battery extension. There’s some good ones coming out that don’t require the bottom to be removed and a separate charging cradle like the Nyko one.
This has really made me doubt if I’ll get one now. The lower RAM makes me question if it will all work! Touch screen, touch sensitive back pads, PS3(ish) graphics card, etc. Will 256 RAM be able to cope with all that? Is the memory card (UMD replacement) system still in place? Or is it a glorified PSPGO? Sony, you had my full support now your worrying me :/
Portables sure are getting expensive these days. 3DS and NGP (I suppose) are almost the price of a console. I’m not that rich, guys! Stop making things so expensive!!! :'(
lol us money is like 6 times more than my own… yet I still managed to save for a 3DS and it sure has been worth it :D
I had no job but I managed to get a 3DS at launch. If you plan your money right, things will be fine.
lol at the fanboys saying the NGP would be a Gazillion times better/better than the ps3 and portable…THERE YOU HAVE IT! sony gave up on its quality and now cares more about selling more systems, if they do this they’re doomed….
Lol things have been ugly for sony since PSN got hacked and before… hopefully thay wouldn’t sayingthing bead abt nintendo again… that happened to one of my friends friend… he said that he was fed up of wii.. shitty grahicx etc. and bought an xbox… the thing got the rings 3 weeks later….
Seriously, Sony is way too cocky… graphics aren’t everything, neither is power of a processor unit. but well that’s what they have been known for…. still this thing might still sell for 275/300 knowing sony…
They HAD a chance of me buying one before they cut the power. I was going to have my 3DS for 3D and nintendo games, plus the eShop, and the NGP as my powerhouse portable that could do it all and have a much more aggressive approach to the Internet. As a fan of both, this is terrible news for Sony. I was willing to dish out $250 for it. Maybe even more.
PS4 and NGP could very well be the last consoles coming from Sony, then it’ll be between Nintendo and Microshaft
Sony>Microsoft. I still can’t believe Microsoft is even considered in this “war.” What’s the biggest upcoming exclusive? GoW? And “Then comes…. OBLIVION!”
An Arkham Asylum reference for ya. ~.~
No. The only people who buy this are hardcore Sony fans. This will only deter them from it. Nice move Sony.
As long as it makes ninety pull the finger out and release some quality titles we are all winners. If a LittleBigPlanet is released on launch day forbthe NGP then I’m tempted.
So first of all, I got a 3DS. And now that they’ve downgraded the NGP, I’m even less likely than unlikely to get one. Nice job there. The 3DS is already out, and whoever want one would’ve gotten one…or wait for Zelda, which will come before the NGP anyway. So this is useless.
