Nintendo Wii U: Nintendo Of America President Says Wii U Is No iPad Imitator

Nintendo of America president recently received the chance to sit down with the New York Times to discuss all things Wii U. During the interview Reggie Fils-Aime was questioned about similarities between the Wii U controller and Apples iPad. Reggie was quick to shot this question down stating the Wii U has been in development long before standard tablets.

Were there some developments in the air that also influenced the design, such as the popularity of the iPad?

We were well in development before the the birth of tablets and, again, to be clear, this is not a tablet. It is a connected experience to the base console. It talks with the base console. It interacts with other Wii accessories whether that is a Wii Remote Plus or a Wii Balance Board. So it has very different functionality compared to a tablet.”

  1. All of these people claiming the Wii U controller is some kind of imitation are completely misinformed.
It’s exactly the same concept Nintendo coined with the DS? The cheek!

  2. I really think Nintendo has to make clear exactly how long they’ve had this idea. I think they mentioned when they were making the Wii they considered having a touch screen along with it, so they should make it perfectly obvious to stop stupid people like THQ saying they thought of it before Nintendo. Even though uDraw came out 18 months ago and the iPad came out what, a bit more 2 years ago?

    1. FOR THE LAST TIME IS NOT AN IPAD IMINATOR IT CONNECTED WITH THE CONSOLE and can ipad do that?

    1. That’s right my iPhone (a compact iPad that makes calls, why would anyone want an iPad?) differs from the WiiU in that it is TERRIBLE for gaming controls! This WiiU controller has a little something called buttons and DUAL Analog as well as brilliant touchscreen.

  3. I can’t believe I haven’t seen anyone else say it all week, but who else thinks it would be hilarious (and thus, a good marketing strategy in a way) if Nintendo called all the Wii U peripherals “U-Tensils”? lol.

  4. When I saw the Wii U, I didn’t even think about the iPad. Wii U is unique and the device has lots of potential.

  6. The media, especially non videogame industry media, are convinced that Apple are the Holy Grail of ideas! The iPad is just a big iPod touch if they want to go down the route of imitations! This is a controller that happens to have a screen, rather than a screen that is a controller.
