The long-running Sonic the Hedgehog franchise continues to gain popularity and despite 35 years of the blue blur, Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka, believes that the series is only halfway to its full potential. The team initially had extremely high goals when it came to SEGA’s 2D mascot back in the day, but with a mixed bag of 3D games the Sonic Team hasn’t had that critically acclaimed breakout hit. However, they will continue to do their best to strive to get there and good luck to them.
“To be honest, we believe that Sonic is still only halfway to reaching its full potential. When we created the first Sonic the Hedgehog, the development team at the time used to say, ‘Let’s aim for Disney.’ When I first joined Sega, I was also told to dream big… things like, ‘Use Sonic to surpass Disney’ and ‘One day, we’ll build a theme park.’
“Thirty-five years have passed, but we haven’t quite gotten there yet. Now that we’ve brought the movie to life, we want to share the appeal of Sonic with even more people who haven’t yet played the Sonic game series.”

They are so delusional…
It’s true. Imagine if they made good video games!
Sonic was far better than Mario in the 90’s, especially for animation, what were they thinking with that awful Mario movie? Ugh.. And then those terrible CDI games. Besides, the chicks are far hotter in the Sonic franchise.. 🤤
Good luck to them, the recent movies were great and for a more mature audience than Mario.
Comparing the hotel Mario cutscenes to the amazing Sonic cd opening, Sonic did top Mario at certain things.
Ya accept for the crappy key cards they released. tho I partially blame nintendo for that screw up. luckaly first party games that mostly run ok are full on card. there are some acceptions like cyber punk wich doesent run that great because switch 2 isennt powerful enough but o well.
It will never stop being funny to me how Mario lives rent-free in the heads of Sonic fans lmao.
Like, you obviously know that Mario has come out on top against Sonic pretty much every single time, but are incapable of coping with it. Hence why you come onto a Nintendo news forum calling yourself “Truth Bringer” (which is genuinely one of the most insecure sounding aliases I’ve ever heard lol), desperately trying to convince people Sonic is better on an article that doesn’t even MENTION Mario.
I genuinely don’t think I’ve ever encountered a more immature or sad fanbase than Sonic’s. It’s just depressing at this point.
It’s really fascinating how both mascots literally became the exact opposite of each other for good and bad. And one of the things that really sticks out that’s relevant to this article is how Mario has successfully not only himself spun out into multiple genres, but that many of his side characters have their own beloved game series like Yoshi’s Island, Donkey Kong Country and Luigi’s Mansion…and yet outside of Shadow and that one knuckles and tails game many years ago. Sonic has all these goddamn interesting and unique side characters and yet Sonic team never does anything with them that specifically features them in a spin-off game. Like imagine a Knuckles solo game that plays like his treasure hunting and Sonic Adventure but the mechanics are exactly like the way Donkey Kong Bonanza is with his punching and digging. Like there’s so many opportunities that they could have made so many successful side series that would have made them money and the claim and they just never did because to be honest they never recovered from Sonic 2006 ever.
Nah, Sonic reached it’s “full potential” in the late 90’s/early 00’s.
It’s only been downhill since then, and will continue to go even further downhill as time goes on.
They won’t listen to me anyway, so I don’t want to sound like a broken record.
