Nintendo Wii: Nintendo President Discusses Weak Wii Performance

Satoru Iwata has spoken to Mercury News about the Wii’s disappointing performance this year and to discuss the company’s forthcoming Wii U console. Iwata admitted that “no single entertainment device can enjoy eternal popularity” but Nintendo are hopeful that Wii sales will pick up during the holiday season when we will be seeing Zelda: Skyward Sword and Kirby.

“Well, of course, no single entertainment device can enjoy eternal popularity. And when it comes to Wii, we have to understand that any potential sales are going to be affected by the seasonalities much more than before.”

“If we cannot sell as well as we expect to during the holiday sales season, it’s going to be a grave concern for us. But right now, I think it’s premature to say, in terms of the current sales, what the one-year sales (result) will be like.”

“It’s nothing new. Last year and two years before, many people were very much concerned about the future of the Wii around this time of the year. However, the fact of the matter is that it ended up being the top-selling home console hardware of the year two years in a row, each year exceeding the previous record. That’s simply because the Wii was able to enjoy great sales during the holiday season.”

  1. generic internet user

I am disappointed by the amount of wii games released this year. Like, one game? Maybe its because the 3DS just came out a few months ago and nintendo is shifting their focus to that, but still, i want a new game (that isn’t wii play motion or the mario sports game)

  2. yeah put out some games already, wheres new super mario bros. 2? really dropped the ball there…tatsunoko vs capcom 2 as well…..

  3. Yeah exactly. How about releasing the “Japanese 3?” You donkey – then Wii might sell better this holiday season.

  4. If they actually allowed the Wii owners to get games such as Pandora’s Tower, Xenoblade, and The Last Story, it wouldn’t have a weak performance.

  5. Localize the big 3 games, and maybe your system will sell better NIntendo : ) Also, I’m surprised Reggie hasn’t said anything of that or has been asked.

  6. Well duh, Nintendo. You’re not putting out any amazing games. I mean, I love Zelda, but we need more than this. Lot’s more. Hopefully you learn this.

  7. Well there’s Zelda, Kirby, Xenoblade, Pandora and Last Story due out before the end of the year (Only if you live in Europe tho) so that’s something.

The main problem is that everyone who wanted a Wii got one. It also doesn’t help with the Wii-U announced. People will just wait for that one instead.

  9. there hasn’t been much to talk about with the wii recently, insofar as software is concerned. but fingers crossed, when xenoblade, kirby, skyward sword, pandora and last story are released, sales should pick up for nintendo.
