Nintendo Wii U: Bioshock Developer Has ‘No Plans Right Now’ For Wii U

Ken Levine from Irrational Games, who is best known for his critically acclaimed Biosock franchise, has told IGN that his development team have no plans at present to develop games on the Wii U. Whilst Irrational Games currently have no plans to develop for Wii U Levine has mentioned that he’s extremely excited by the machine, so I wouldn’t completely rule anything out at this stage.

Do you have a reaction to Nintendo’s announcement, about the Wii U? I saw you were in the video they rolled.

Ken Levine: Just to be clear, there are no plans. I’m not saying it can’t happen, but we have no plans to do any games for that platform. There are things about it that, as a core gamer, really appeal to me, that have nothing to do with Fruit Ninja. I have nothing against Fruit Ninja, I respect all kinds of games, I love all kinds of games, there are just certain kinds of things that are more suited to my taste. There are some things, as a core gamer, as a guy who likes lying in bed playing… I’ve always had to sacrifice that core gaming experience when I lie in bed playing games. We’re now getting to a place with Vita and what Nintendo’s doing where that’s not necessarily going to be the case, where you can play full-on hardcore games in bed with the lights out while your wife’s asleep. I like that a lot. That means a lot to me. On the airplane? That means a lot to me as a core gamer, that you’ve got two sticks. That’s so important to me. The fact that the Wii U has got two sticks… I feel it’s like… It’s a great year for the core coming back and saying, okay, have your touch screens, have your motion control, we’ll try to make that work, and if you can pull that off it’ll be really good. But I want to have my cake and eat it too. I think these experiences are starting to allow that to happen. I love my iPad, but I mostly work on it, I don’t play a lot of games on it, because I’m not into that style or form factor, that three-minute experience.

  1. Ah, the stereotypical “hardcore” gamer of today. The kinds that say innovations are gimmicks and if everything is not exactly like it’s always been it can’t be any good. Without change, the video game industry will become stale. Eventually graphics will meet a threshold and they can only go so far. That being said, I do like Nintendo’s strategy with this console. It offers all the functions gamers are used to plus adds innovative features such as the touch screen and streaming. I think this system will be revolutionary.

  2. They won’t work on the Wii-U yet will work on the Shita for the reason that he can play n it in bed?

Great Work. I WAS planning on buying Bioshock Infinite. I’ll not bother

  3. Mr. Levine is one of those people you have to watch on video to fully understand what he’s saying. He’s not saying they’ll never develop for Wii U, just that there are no games currently in development for the new system. You know how these guys have to specify just to avoid out-of-context speculation. I highly doubt that he would publicly praise the controller and participate in Nintendo’s E3 video if he felt the system had no potential for games from Irrational. Come next year, Bioshock will probably be an easy port for them.

    1. Also, what he’s saying is he likes the idea of playing the Wii U controller in bed, he’s reiterating this from the E3 video. He only mentions Vita because both consoles have more enhanced gameplay, in terms of playing directly in your hands, than was previously available, and because that is the one you can play on an airplane.

    2. This is a dude who’s made obscenely awesome games not limited to just Bioshock, so yeah, I’d take his word graciously.

    3. Thank-U. Finally somebody gets it, unfortunately the first few comments did not get it. If he loves the Wii U which it clearly sound like he does, he’ll probably want to dev for it. BTW Bioshock is far from a generic shooter!

  5. Why is this even news? He’s already said that he is interested in Wii U as a gamer, not as a developer. There is no real reason why he wouldn’t develop for Wii U if it’s a port to another HD system. It would help them expand their market. Then again, I wasn’t that interested in Infinite to begin with, so this just made me hate on the guy even more.

  6. Whatever, as much I want “hardcore” games for the Wii U I don’t want them that bad :P Take your Vita, good luck fighting for sales among the other generic shooters.

      1. Like I said in a comment below…
Bioshock isn’t a generic shooter but it will have to COMPETE will other shooters like CoD. I never said Bioshock was a generic shooter… read carefully next time >.>

    2. They Gould try to expand their games to other consoles to get more exposure and sales. I have no clue what buoshock is but willing to try if it comes on the Wii-U

    3. Jeez alot of negative, hateful comments here. Bioshock is NOT a generic shooter, it’s only in the market with many generic shooters. and the guy thinks the Wii U looks great. I don’t understand the hate

      1. I’m saying that Vita already has a lot of generic shooters already lined up. Bioshock may be different but it still has to compete with those other games.

    5. A huge shame, but at the same time Nintendo really needs to build up the hardcore market for people like Levine to be confident. Carmack made some similar words for his company’s support.

    6. Meh, keep it on the Fail3 and XFail, I don’t won’t your nasty dregs. Bioshock is a game on poser consoles and those systems are shrouded in copious Bio-stench… Nintendo exclusives or nothing at all… for me it’s that simple.
