Nintendo Wii U: Wii U Can Do Anything The PlayStation 3 And Xbox 360 Can Do

EA Sports vice president, Andrew Wilson has told Eurogamer that the company’s newly received Wii U development kits show that the Wii U can do anything Sony’s PlayStation 3 or Microsoft’s Xbox 360 can do.

“The short answer is yes [we have a better idea of Wii U’s power]; the longer answer is not quite.”

“As every new piece of hardware and every new development library comes through we get a greater understanding of the power. With our early research we had been very happy with the output of the box and we expect that that will only go up moving forward.

“There are added challenges for us as developers when you think about rendering on two screens and what that might mean, but we’re looking forward to that challenge.

“It’s still moving, but I think we’ll be able to do anything that we can do on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on the Wii U.”

  1. Title is kinda mis-leading. It’s more about games. When I first read it I thought ‘Blu-Ray player?’

      1. That’s why I said it’s kinda mis-leading to say that Wii U can do ANYTHING the Playstation 3 and 360 can do.

        1. Still instatroll. No excuses. It’s more than obvious from the title it means processing power. Where in the article does the dev mention movies? And WHY do I want ‘region locked for movies’ BD expense, forced into the cost of a GAMES console? Such Derp.

          1. Calm down, why do people get so defensive? You’re right, it doesn’t talk about movies anywhere in the article, that’s their point. They said the TITLE is KINDA misleading. Especially if they saw the title on Facebook like I did, where that’s ALL it said, and you had to click here to read the rest. If you take the simple line “Wii U Can Do Anything The PlayStation 3 And Xbox 360 Can Do” then that could very well mean in all ways. It may have been clear to you that it was in terms of power, but not everyone understood it that way obviously, so you can’t claim that it was clear. If it was, we wouldn’t be having this discussion, haha.

This is far from trolling, don’t start internet rage where it’s not due. Trust me, I hate trolling just as much as you, but I don’t see this as trolling at all. I think most people who subscribe to this site on Facebook or come here regularly, to a Nintendo-specific news site, aren’t anti-Nintendo fanboys looking to troll, they’re your fellow Nintendo fans, so let’s not accuse them of being bullies when they make a valid comment about a title, nowhere in their comment did they criticize Nintendo or the Wii U.

I’ll even say that the title is misleading ’cause it almost seems factual or confirmed, when the actual quote is “I think we’ll be able to do anything that we can do on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on the Wii U.” He thinks. And as far as EA is concerned, but he’s not speaking on behalf of other companies. I’m sure it’ll end up being true across the board, but like he said, it’s still moving.

But that’s not me dissing anyone, Nintendo or even this site. It’s just an observation, definitely not trolling. I know the internet has a lot of idiots, but let’s not assume EVERYONE is some idiot troll :)

It’s almost as if you’re trying to get something out of them for bringing up even more than the simple observation they were making. I don’t think ANYONE wants region-lock for games or movies, but let’s be honest, it’ll be there for games, when has it not?

              1. Oops, didn’t mean to double-post, don’t know how that happened actually, I’m not spamming I swear! Read the 2nd version though, it’s just a bit more than the 1st version… Still not sure how that happened… o_O

          2. Calm down, no need to call people a troll because they fought it was misleading. What a Nintendo fanboy.

      2. I don’t think either of them were trolling, it’s a valid point. They were just making an observation and saying they got their hopes up for movie capabilities but then realized that’s not what they were actually talking about. They didn’t follow that up with any criticism of the console or company.

        1. I agree. Stop getting butthurt and call EVERYTHING you don’t like or agree with trolling. Jezuz! People learn a new word and then throw it around like confetti, just like when a two-year-old learns the word “dadda” he starts calling EVERYTHING “dadda”.

People need to grow up. Life doesn’t agree with you all the damn time.

“HE’S A TROLL BECAUSE HE SAID A FACT THAT PISSED ME OFF & I DON’T AGREE WITH!!”

      3. YEA I AGREE! HE’S TROLLING BECUZ HE DOESN’T AGREE WITH MY OPINION!! I HATE THAT BASTARD!

I HATE HIM!! SHUT THE FUCK UP U BASTARD. IF U DON’T AGREE WITH ME THEN GTFO.

NINTENDO NEWS IS ONLY FOR PEOPLE WHO THINK LIKE ME.

GET OUT OF MY NINTENDO NEWS!! U STUIPID FUCKING TROLL!

    1. While I understand where you are coming from, I don’t see it as misleading. Any article phrased as such will almost always be talking about graphical power, especially since that seems to be one of the biggest questions regarding the Wii U at the moment, along with it’s online infrastructure.

      1. I thought of it as power myself, ’cause like you mentioned, that’s the big question, but I guess if some people thought otherwise, then it IS misleading. Maybe not for everyone, but at least for some. And to be fair, they did say “kinda”, and for all we know they were reading about movie playback being in or out recently somewhere and that was what was on their mind when they saw this… If you take the title at full value, then technically it would imply DVD/Blu-Ray playback, but I don’t think the author meant it to mislead that way, it’s just a simpler title to put. :)

        1. Or, it’s more like they misled themselves. Information is information, and if people have the right to understand it however they want to, then they’re liable for their own misunderstanding. It’s their fault for not considering other interpretations of the information.

    2. Why do you want movies so bad in the first place. It’s called get a dcs or blue ray player and bam problem solved. No need to waste development money just to watch a movie that you can see in mutiple places.

  2. if it can do that, then with the PS3 it better not have region lock. and with the 360 it better have a good online service.

  3. Am I the only one confused why this seems surprising? It better do everything PS3 and 360 can do, it’s the next generation console. It’s like if the PS3 came out saying it could do everything the gamecube and xbox could do. OF course it could. It came out way after and has to be much better. Why is the Wii U being compared so closely to system that have been out for a few years already?

    1. Since it will be competing with it for a time until the PS4 & NG Xbox (720??) comes out. Which will be at least a year, if not 2 or 3.

      1. Its common knowledge DICE already reported Wii U as MORE powerful than PS3, so why people say it wont compete it beyond me. PS4 will be very expensive AS ALWAYS, 720 will just be slightly more powerful with Kinect built in. Cross platform still exists.

        Devs win=More games= Gamers win.

        1. The ps4 won’t be that expensive Sony isn’t going to make it that powerful
and they said they’re going market more to women and children because they didn’t really try to with the ps3 which hurt sales.

  4. I kind of want it to include blu-ray playback. That way, they could do some sort of bundle with movies or include demos in some movies and stuff. I do have a ps3, but that’s just how I feel right now. Maybe it’s because I’ve started working on my anime collection in blu-ray.

  5. That title did not imply processor power. It said it could do everything that the PS3 & xbox 360 can do. I expected blu-ray or at least some kind of media playback from the title. I thought about buying one, until I read the article. And this is not trolling. So get over yourself and quit whining about trolls.

    1. im just going to save wait a minute i dont save i just got a 3ds a new tv im probably going to get the vita than the wiiU and than the ps4

    1. I don’t know what those guys at the top of the post were talking about. THIS guy is trolling…
And I’d rather be a “homo” than a sorry excuse for a gamer like yourself. In fact, if you don’t play Nintendo you don’t know what REAL games are.
So go play COD under your bridge, little troll :]

      1. it should also be noted that the Wii (a console aimed towards kids and family) outsold the 360 and PS3 until now, Microsoft and Sony saw what Nintendo did and are now cashing in on it, so…..expect some kiddy type games for Xbox 360 and PS3 soon, oh wait there already is one, Kinectimals, yeah why don’t you go play that or Call of Duty..

  7. I’m surprised so few people mentioned that it should AT LEAST do everything 4 year old machines can do!!!! PS3?? Xbox360????? Wow, I’m so impressed Nintendo. Does it do more than the Dreamcast too? Amazing! You guys know how to build them.

Come on, this thing better be close to the PS4 and Xbox420, now that they’ve stolen all of Wii’s interface enhancements.

  8. Personally, I love my Wii (hehe), but sometimes I envied my HD twin-owning friends because they got all of the cool looking multi-platform games while I missed out. The Wii U seems to be a combination of what I love in the Wii plus what I always wanted from the others. It seems like a win for me. Hopefully, Nintendo can make amends with third parties and provide a decent online structure. I’m still rooting for them. :)

  9. At the rate this is going Nintendo is going to have to do some damage control. So many articles make it seem like its a xbox360.5 which would not bold well for the WiiU and would not sell with hardcore gamers that already own a PS3 and 360.

I personally think it’s much more powerful, but article after article that play on words make it seems like they are trying to say the system is as good when compared to a 6 yr old technology. The final specs or a seriously epic demo will put this to rest or have the core group collectively laugh at Nintendo and start saving for the XboxNext and PS4. Time will tell.

    1. Agreed. I think it’s more powerful than people are giving it credit for, but that’s Ninty’s fault for a subpar presentation. We’ll see at next year’s E3. Hopefully sooner.

  11. i honestly dont think its right comparing the wii u with the ps3 and 360. isnt the wii u supposed to be a next gen console? instead of comparing themselves to this gen they should be thinking head, but I also now where they’re coming from. there going to be competing with the 360 for a year or so and the ps3 for maybe 2.

  12. Question this yourself: do you need more off graphical stuff then the PS3/Xbox? The bottleneck will soon not become the graphics, but the artist who have to draw them. In my view, I think that you don’t really need more power.

  13. I really, REALLY, need to tell all those people above me.
The PS3 and Xbox 360 are HALFWAY through their lifespan! The Wii is almost over, and the Wii U will come. Nintendo has a “5-year” lifespan for its consoles so thats why they are comparing it to these consoles. By the time the new Microsoft and Sony consoles arrive, Nintendo will already be one console ahead. The PS3 and Xbox 360 WILL be competing with the Wii U, which is why they are comparing each other, that is my final statement.

  14. Developers have already said that with older dev kits, it was extremely easy to port games over from the PS3 or 360 to the WiiU without any problems… I would have though that, that would have made it apparent that it was AT LEAST on par at that time, which was on an early dev kit…

Would be nice to actually hear what EA knows the system can do… I don’t think I have seen any 360 or PS3 game that looks quite as good as the Japanese Garden tech demo… I could be proven wrong, but I have yet to see a true graphical comparison.

Why can’t anyone give us just a little bit of straight-forward, detailed information, so that we can be clear on things??? What is with all of these loose untied comments on the system? I happen to like to know where my money is going…
