Nintendo Backs Off SOPA Support

Nintendo has quietly distanced itself from the controversial Stop Online Piract Act which is known as SOPA. Nintendo originally endorsed the bill as of November but have quietly removed themselves from the list sometime in the past month. EA has also backed away from the proposed bill.

Edit: According to Destructoid Nintendo are still part of the Entertainment Software Association which backs the proposal. While Nintendo have distanced themselves from SOPA they are still in it through the Entertainment Software Association .Thanks to Axl Abe and others that pointed this out.

      1. Well, I got the information from here
which indicates that they have distanced themselves from the proposal. Thanks for letting me know though. I’ll update the original article :-)

    1. Just because they are part of the ESA does not mean they support it even if the ESA does. There are many reasons why they may need to remain part of that group.

  1. While I can understand why they may support it (to stop ROMS from spreading), I’m glad to see they’ve backed away from that support.

    1. Thats actually pretty contradictive. The more people downloading ROMs, the greater are the chances of these people to buy Nintendo’s most recent games/sequels. Now ISOs are a completely different story though… :P

        1. there isn’t a difference, s/he’s being sarcastic

Plus I’ve downloaded roms onto my computer, it hasn’t stopped me from purchasing the games from the nintendo store though?

          1. Well the ROMs are the old games and the ISOs are the files from discs, which would be Nintendos new games(the ones they still sell and make money on)

  2. As important as it is to prevent cyber crimes, the last thing we need is for the internet to be taken over by corporations (using the government as their shield and marionette) hoping to stifle individual freedoms.

    1. So um, what exactly are we suing here? You can’t sue a bill. And a bill can’t go bankrupt. Even if you could, you still wouldn’t, because a bill is just a proposal, or, A FREAKING IDEA! You can’t sue an idea!

        1. fuck u fake peteriuss. i hate sopa but unfotunatly not only nintendo but another companies like sega, apple,SONY SUCKS,microdick especially microsoft etc etc etc are surpoting that ass sopa

  3. The bill is wrong, nintendo needs to stay as far away from this possible. Anonymous have basically condemned sony/psn for supporting it, and i think psn will be taken down again. soon.

  4. They are still supporting it though, just through the ESA. Nothing has changed. Plus they supported it in the beginning, so it makes no real difference. I’m still boycotting them, along with every other company who either do support SOPA, or have in the past.

  5. If SOPA is approved, then the whole internet will come to an end, while i have to download every game possible in a R4 card.

  6. sopa is disgusting and corrupt, Ron Paul would never allow it, if u think hes crazy, u’ve been brainwashed by the media, the man is the most honest politician out there, and the fact that the media attacks him, only proves that. vote ron paul 2012!!

    1. There’s only one Paul I’d consider voting for: RuPaul.

You seem to handle the word “brainwashed” so well. Is that self-projection I see there? Hmmm…

  7. i cant believe that.nintendo shouldnt pay for them, they should kill them and go to hell.we like internet and they will fail to change it because 1 billion people like internet and i dont think so they willl like this.so SOPA maybe goodbye and welcome back internet

  8. I don’t support the downloading of games that are still on the market however i do support the downloading of older games such as SNES,NES,Game boy etc.

  9. The official list from the House has not listed Nintendo, Sony, or EA in a long time. Still, it’s important to get the word out that they do not support it. The bills are bad news.
