IGN Awards Kid Icarus Uprising 8.5/10

Despite Japanese gaming publication awarding Kid Icaus: Uprising a perfect score, IGN has decided to award the game 8.5/10. The publication states that the game is fantastic and features stunning visuals, but it’s ultimately let down by a frustrating control scheme that would have been rectified if Nintendo had decided to include a second Circle Pad on the Nintendo 3DS.

Kid Icarus Uprising is a fantastic game full of superb action, stunning graphics and art design, incredible music (truly some of Nintendo’s best), humorous dialogue and solid gameplay. Despite that, it suffers from an equal number of problems, including some very frustrating and awkward controls, a fairly repetitive level structure, characters that talk too much and action that sometimes overwhelms the 3DS’s relatively small screen.

What’s important to remember is that Uprising’s strengths truly outweigh its weaknesses. The game is simply addicting, both in its arresting, fast-paced action and its ability to inspire repeat visits with its scalable difficulty, bite-sized mentality and seemingly endless amount of unlockable content. Kid Icarus Uprising is yet another stellar entry in the 3DS’s growing library. Much like Masahiro Sakurai’s Super Smash Bros. series, Uprising is not without its flaws – but you’ll be too busy having fun to notice too much.

  1. Ign – orance, they want controls in every game to be the same….boring. They’re just mad cuz they can’t master new controls. Too much fps Dick riding

  2. 8.5 is not a bad score, everyone.

Anyway, I was worried that the controls would be annoying, but I demo’d the game not too long ago, and they didn’t seem to be that much of a problem. Also, repetitive level design does not seem to be true, and the other two complaints are not only fairly subjective, but are also very minor.

    1. If you have played Metroid Prime Hunters and were used to those controls then you will have no problem with Kid Icarus Uprising.

      1. MP Hunters was actually one of my favorite DS titles. The touch screen controls mimic PC shooter controls, what with it being like a mouse-and-keyboard-like setup. If the control scheme for Uprising is similar to Hunters, then no worries.

  3. I think if Rich had spent a week more (or so) with the game he would have gotten used to it. I found MPH’s controls bad the first time I played, but by the third time I was over it.

The controls are better than dual-analog, in my opinion, but still not as good as PC. In fact, I never liked FPS’s on consoles, and still don’t, because of dual-analog. The only positive dual-analog has on KIU’s controls is staying steady while moving around; however, something most people forget is that instead of trying to keep the stylus in one place, you can take the stylus OFF the screen and then just hover it over, and that gets rid of dual-analog’s only advantage.

Oh, and guys, don’t hate on the reviewer. It’s his opinion; he can give it a 1.0 for all we care. Just have faith in Nintendo and buy the game, they won’t let you down. Most first-party games, be it Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo, are high-quality all the time. Reviews for me matter only when looking at new franchises (TWEWY for example) or an highly hyped 3rd party game (Crysis 2 or Red Dead Redemption, for example).

        1. The World Ends With You. It’s an amazing Square Enix game, and in my opinion the best RPG on the DS. It’s a game that can only be played on the DS; coincidentally, it also suffered from “bad control scheme” reviews, complaints I found out to be utter crap, to put it bluntly.

TL:DR IT’S A GREAT GAME BUY IT NOW FOR $20 IT’S WORTH IT… Get it online though, it can’t be found on store shelves. Amazon’s your best bet.

  4. so wait…. it’s awesome….. but despite the awesomeness has an equal number of problems…. but the strengths outweigh the weaknesses? I don’t get it -.- I never liked IGN…

best critic = the player, not a site full of people stating opinions and claiming them to be general -.-

  5. Not a bad score. I don’t think this review would sway anyone away from buying this game. Most people will get it anyway and judge for themselves. This game will sell like hotcakes laced with cocaine.

    Leave luck to heaven.

  6. 8.5 isn’t a bad score. 8.5 is a great game. Its normally given to console exclusives, but still a great game. Hell, a 7 is still good

  7. Good score. Unfortunaely, in this type of fucked up video game world, people hates it just because it got 8.5. Sad. But a good score, even though this is a Kid Icarus game.

  8. Correct me if I’m wrong, but can’t u use the circle pad pro? I’m using it for resident evil revalations, and LOVE it. The was also a game that got docked for one circle pad. However, if u have the circle pad pro, it’s a dream. Even without it, it’s still good. 8.5 is still good. However, with the number of extras given with this game, that should’ve @ least bumped it up to 9. Especially considering how 9’s are given to other games, with PLENTY of flaws. Still getting though……..:-)

  9. “Uprising is not without its flaws – but you’ll be too busy having fun to notice too much.”

I’m liking the sound of that.

  10. Wordpress is broke and a pain in the ass

I had a lot of trouble with MGS3D controls at first… Like BAD trouble, but once I got used to it… It is such an excellent game!!! (beautiful sound and graphics)

Hope the same here. I’m not getting CPP. I did fine without it in Revelaitons, and MGS3D… I’m going to try Kid Icarus without it as well.

  11. If I want to read what IGN says I’ll just visit IGN. Now There are even website spoilers on the internet. It spoils itself.

  12. It’s funny how some of you guys are complaining about the score and how it deserved higher when you haven’t even played it yet.

  13. Uhm 8.5?
Just like Revelations and Metal Gear 3D? I don’t see a problem with that! ;)
Also someone remember how great was playing Metroid Prime Hunters and Star Fox Command?… well, KIU has the same control scheme!

  14. Are they IGNorant to the fact that the 3DS has the Circle Pad Pro and that it is compatible with Kid Icarus: Uprising? I’ll take their opinion with a grain of salt.
