Analyst Blames Nintendo For Video Game Sales Decline

Sales of video games in the United States have been on a steep decline over recent months. The reason? Nintendo. Cowen and Company analyst Doug Creutz states that Wii software sales “have been trending down 50 percent year over year, and have been for the last 12 months”. Creutz says that consumers have started shifting over to mobile phone and Facebook games which has left Nintendo, and the video game industry, reeling.

“Everybody needs to realize that the Wii software segment is trending down 50 percent year over year, and has been for the last 12 months. That is a massive decline. There’s no way you could not have a decline overall with that big of a decline in that portion of the software.”

“Ten years ago, Nintendo largely catered to kids and Nintendo fanboys. There was about a five year period they could expand their market beyond that, and now I think they’re back to the kids and Nintendo fanboys again. It’s not a bad market but it’s not a market that’s going to grow enormously.”

        1. lol exactly what i thought, its okay, analyst is another name for high school drop out microsft/sony fanboy on dope that hates nintendo for being the most awesome gaming company

          1. That’s being a fanboy right there. It’s your opinion that Nintendo is “the most awesome gaming company”. Just because you think that, doesn’t mean I have to. Let’s give other people their decisions on which company they like the best. Personally, I only buy Nintendo games and the few PC games like Sonic Generations, Skyrim, Oblivion, etc. I don’t have any games on Sony or Microsoft systems I want, but that doesn’t mean I should hate their company. They’re just as good a company as Nintendo, or any other company. People who play nothing but Nintendo, and have never even tried another company’s product is not reliable when questioned about a game’s review. For example: I used to be a Nintendo fanboy, but I tried Halo 3. I never liked Halo at the time. I was biased and never even touched it. But I had played it one day, and found it quite enjoyable. Especially the multiplayer. But that aside, don’t think that everyone has to agree with you because you say Nintendo is the best. At least give other companies a chance.

    1. its just because nintendo is so frickin awesome and no one wants to buy sony or microsoft’s crap anymore. WIN

      1. yet I bet you have a Blu-Ray or a DVD player (which Sony helped create) and you probably have a PC with some form of Windows. If you have a Mac you’ve lost way before you began talking shit bro…

        1. He said no one’s buying their CRAP. Not their good stuff. And Mac’s don’t belong to either Sony or Nintendo

            1. Let’s see… Windows is used in about 97% of the world’s computers, and Mac is used in about 2%. Well, considering how damn overpriced Macs are I could see them making more money. But seriously no.

          1. Lol might want to do some research their buddy. Seems your talking without any background knowledge on the subject ;)

Also a MAC is a unique identifier address used for all devices that can connect to the interwebs. A Mac is a computer designed by Apple Inc. that runs OSX and Windows on it.
Btw, Sickr word press isn’t working correctly when you type a reply, it stays about 2 lines behind in length so you can’t see (like I can’t see right now) what your typing.

            1. yeah mac kicks ass cuz many things dont support it and its over expensive and freakin retarded, ppl MAC IS THE FUTURE

          2. You can hate Mac all you like, I don’t care. But don’t say it wouldn’t be anywhere without Windows, because a quick study of history of computing shows it’s the other way around. Microsoft is only where it is today because they got to develop Excel and Word for the first Macintosh.

            1. Well… I think they’re living in a give and take relationship and that none of them would’ve lived long without the other.

        2. I refuse to buy blu-ray, DVD’s were not pioneered by sony, and I run Linux (gentoo with enlightenment) and absolutely no microsoft anywhere near here. But none of those decisions have anything to do with there games. Linux because windows just sucks, and I stick to DVD for 2 reasons. 1) The quality difference is not enough to warrent the price of upgrading and replacing ALL my movies and 2) I take particular issue with the way DRM was handled on blu-ray. Take for exaple my linux. Blu ray is not supported on it because linux is open-source and free, and the creaters are more interested in making money than actually providing a high-definition end-user experience. Technically, I believe since sony holds the DRM copyright on blu ray technology, any company that wishes to make a blu ray drive must purchase a license from them first. In the video game industry, this means that its unlikely that any other company can/will use blu ray formats for their games or as movie players. This creats an unfair monopoly on blu ray technology. As for macs…. well its basicly the “crayon” of computers.

Shit, Im ranting, sorry! I didn’t mean too.

    2. it makes perfect sense. it means nintendo is kicking their ass >:). and this isn’t just the fanboy in me talking, it’s the truth.

    3. Lol the fact is it doesn’t, which is why this Creutz guy is such a stupid idiot and I don’t understand at all how he has a job in this industry

    4. I think what’s its actually trying to say is that Nintendo dominates the video game market. If Nintendo sales goes down, practically the entire market goes down as well as the majority of the market IS Nintendo.

  1. OH HELL YEAH GFAMERS I’M “FIRST”. Suck it you little, immature “nickers”! First place feels good you fucking scub, this is all for Jackie Robinson. Pro gfame mang!

  2. Blame the companies that make smart phones and the apps for them. They are what are destroying the gaming industry.

  3. LMAO. If anything, it’s publishers/developers as well as Microsoft & Sony that are to blame for what’s happening in this gaming industry with high development costs, DLC, On-disc DLC, DRM, Online passes, & all of this other gibberish.

People have woken up to what publishers/developers are doing, & that’s why they’re refusing to adapt to what they’re doing & refuse to support it.

  4. You all have pointed out a bunch of good points. I would also like to point out that even Nintendo’s support for Wii has dwindled, as with most new generation transition periods. Also, he is completely forgetting to factor in 3DS software sales….

    1. Also, the economy isn’t at it’s best so people have less disposable income. Instead of spending 50-60 bucks they’d rather play something for free or maybe 99 cents. People are being more selective with their entertainment all around.

    2. It’s no coincidence that the WiiU was announced and the 3DS came out, of course people are going to forget about the wii, because at that point, any sane developer would have, to go develop on 3ds/wiiU

  5. I think Nintendo saw this coming and that’s why they decided to come out with the WiiU. Also, how is the decline Nintendo’s fault? If we’re talking about core vide gamers, those who constant buy and play and search for new games, then Microsoft and Sony are mainly responsible for that end of the market. If they were only talking about the rate of new gamers declining, then yes, Nintendo would bear the brunt of the blame. As a whole, all three companies are responsible for the decline in gaming; they’ve oversaturated the market with cookie cutter games and shovelware, and now the buyers are getting smart. They realize that very few new titles are actually worth the pricetag.

    1. While I can agree sort of, All the first party games have been at least good. No first party game on a Nintendo console is bad, and the same can be said for the most part with others. It’s Ubisoft and EA that brings all the crap stuff out.

            1. Super Mario Galaxy was not fucking linear. It was more like Super Mario 64 getting new worlds after defeating Bowser Jr and Bowser.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 was more Super Mario Bros 1, 3, and World.

            1. The levels weren’t linear – it’s more of that you just never actually get comfortable in any Galaxy; quite unlike the islands on Sunshine.

  6. It is another stooge trying to get people to convert to cell/tabs over console gaming. BTW,how does he explain the sales of Kid Icarus, and 3DS? the 3DS is outpacing the DS at this point.

    1. Ya cause it’s fairly cheap. Nintendo actually made of profit off of the DS but Nintendo is just now (April) making a profit off of the 3DS.

      1. I take it you work for Nintendo since you know how much and when they started to make a profit…inthe words of Shao Khan “hahahahaha, Don’t make me laugh!”

        1. No, ages ago Sickr posted a report or something, explaining to us how Nintendo would only start profiting in April. You don’t always have to work for companies to know their sales and marketing.

  7. the same thing happened when Sony made a Big deal about the PS2, look at there numbers, people are holding out for the WIIU, its the only next gen console coming out this year. we all know about it and are waiting while trying not to chew our fingers off. i predict that “fanboys” of PS and Xbox will be getting one as well, its going to be the only system with major releases with in the coming next year as they do the same trimming back on major titles to release with there next system in 2013.

    1. I am a honestly questioning you intelligence. So many developers have come out and said that this will be weaker than the current gen consoles, and it will likely that very few major releases will come out for the Wii U if any. Developers have stated that it’s honestly a waste of time to try and learn how to program for the Wii U because A) it has a shitty controller (Nintendo obviously is trying to go bankrupt) they want to put extra effort if they can get more sales on the better consoles and B the Wii U has much different hardware than the current consoles so it’ll make it even harder for them to learn to program for it. So really everything you say makes you sound stupid “next-gen console” my ass, will PS3 and Xbox fanboys buy it no this is more attractive to the very casual gamer these fanboys play rage inducing games and likely will through the controller at the wall or something you can buy another PS3 or Xbox but you can’t buy another Wii U controller think about it.

      1. i am honestly questing your intelligence. you’re obviously an xbox or ps3 fanboy. everything you said makes you sound stupid. care to share exactly which developers stated that wii u will be weaker and that it’s a waste of time to learn how to program for?

      2. and i am questioning your intelligence for taking the word of developers. there is to many different people saying its weak or powerful. the developers who say that its weak more than likely have one of the early dev kits. the only way we’ll know for sure about wii u power is when E3 comes around and they show the final version. and i’m saying this as nice possible but there is something called a store where you can buy a replacement. but i’ll admit they could be right and it could be crap, but i refuse to say one or the other until nintendo reveals the final version. but i’ll still buy regardless cause power isn’t everything.

      3. You sir are an anonymous fail follower… Beleaving that shit is like beleaving Nintendo has alian technology and is slowly drip-feeding us to the future… I for one would beleave the latter over your BS.

      4. Reggie kicks your ass

name the developers that said the wii u was weaker than the Xbox 360. too bad you cant

ANONYMOUS developers that said the wii u was weaker than the xbox 360. Thats just some bullshit a stupid microsoft or sony fanboy like you made up.

        watch this video:

        1. this guy’s logic is flawed. just because you can port a video game from another system doesn’t make it easy to develop for. Your not making a new game from scratch your PORTING which is ten times easier to do. At this point it would be harder to get developers on board to develop games from scratch.

      5. I’m going to honestly question your intelligence, as real developers have stated all of the following:
        1) the Wii U is very easy to develop for
        2) The Wii U improves visuals
        3) Major releases are coming out for Wii U. Hey, plus Nintendo exclusives.
        4) The controller is comfortable to use
        5) The controller improves gameplay

    1. This is exactly what I was going to post.

Problem with the industry that Nintendo saved? BLAME IT ON NINTENDO AND THE MOTHAFUCKIN A-AA-A-A-AL-CO-HOL!!

  8. These analysts are morons!!! They have a background in business and think they can analyse every sector of business? All consoles are dropping in sales from the previous year!! Sickr just posted that COD sales are down….probably nintendos fault. The wii u may spark the industry…it may not. Go back to analising the s&p 500 you vague bastard!!

  9. I might play smartphone games but it would never replace a Zelda game for example. Maybe I’m just one of those fanboys..

    1. The billions made in quality video games could drop, but there will always be a massive pocket who will pay more than a buck to have an exnetsive game. Look at the credit roll for angry birds then the credit roll for skyward sword..a lot more people!! What if we said we will only pay .99 cents for a movie? Think we would still get LOTR or avatar? You pay for what you get, simple rule

  10. Oh, sure. Blame Nintendo for something they have nothing to do with. It never fails!
I’d like to point out that if the anal-yst didn’t realize, we’re in April. November and December are always the months with highest game sales. During the first half of the year, it’s common that there’s a lack of games coming out. Companies hold their releases for after E3.

  11. nintendo’s faut? LOL, I blame to facebook games and people that thinks that videogames are flash–facebook-like repetitive games, you can’t compare facebook games with console games

  12. I don’t think they’re “blaming” Nintendo for lower sales, they’re just stating that since Nintendo has a large portion of the market, and sales of the Wii are declining (which is reasonable, since it’s nearing the end of it’s life cycle), the entire industry is declining. But, our problems will be solved with the Wii U, because it will create enough hype to re-stimulate things.

  13. This is fuck logic. Nintendos decline is self inflicted, they could’ve “future proofed” the Wii, but they decided to take their own route, and it made them a SHIT TON MEGA LOAD OF MONEY. But the Wii’s lack of power is coming to back to bite them. That’s where the WiiU comes in, I honestly believe a system = in power to the ps3 would be perfect (given the look of the best Wii games being as good as ps3 games just lacking HD on drastically weaker hardware). But to go beyond that with a touchscreen interface, just take my, and every other Nintendo fan’s money. The WiiU Will return Nintendo back to its former glory! E3 can’t come soon enough!!

  14. So consumers have shifted to mobile phones and facebook games, huh? I’m not analyst, but is it safe to assume that the Wii has reach its peak in terms of a userbase? I remember people saying the same for the 3DS, yet it has been selling like crazy lately.

    1. i absolutley hate when people say Wii users have moved over to mobile games. TOTAL BULLSHIT I KNOW. these people know nothing about nintendo gamers and hardcore gamers who own a wii in general. mobile games will never be on the same level as dedicated gaming devices

    1. what I was thinking. Wii is winding down, it’s true. But Wii U aims to sell games.
It also emphasizes gaming over online streaming.

  15. Yup, what we got here is another religious mobile missionary trying to convert gamers from the “evils of console gaming” over to mobile gaming because two second distractions on an otherwise overwhelmingly non-gaming device are apparently what makes said device qualify as the same kind of gaming device as something like a Wii U. So many people trying to exploit loopholes and technicalities just to get what they want and not simply working hard by own efforts to get it. This generation totally blows.

  16. Yeah for blaming Nintendo!

It’s not developers fault. Not like they had TWO OTHER FUCKING SYSTEMS to develop on / for.

No, best to Blame Nintendo. We need a scapegoat.

    1. You sir have owned yourselfm respect for knowing what you’re talking about. But newfags gonna be newfags and thinking Mario is baby stuff and that PEGI 3+ means: Only for babies…

  17. These analysts are getting less and less credible by the second.
“Let’s blame Nintendo for killing video games, even though they have 99 million active Wii users and the 3DS has taken off better than any other comparable system.”

  18. people can’t point fingers at nintendo for this problem. its total BS and noone can say otherwise unless they want to look stupid. if microsoft and sony didnt make consoles / platforms then i can see this being credible but its not

    1. also When the F*** did people start thinking because people own a wii they will constantly play generic mobile experiences . makes these anylists sound absolutely stupid

  19. well here is an idea MAKE SOME FUCKIN GAMES THAT PEOPLE WILL PLAY AND MAYBE THEY WILL BUY THEM U FUCKIN MUCKs

  20. It’s only really Sony and Microsoft’s game divisions that are dying out of the game industry, and I say good riddance. With rumours of a new Neo Geo Portable and a new Valve-backed Steam console, it’s time that GAME companies took back the GAME industry once more.

  21. I bet no one in here has a marketing and economics degree. Nintendos sales are dwindling because they flooded the market with sooooo many games that eventually no one cares. They tried to appeal to too many people instead of sticking with what they WERE good at. They completely lost focus of economics 101. 1. They had too much SUPPLY and 2. The DEMAND dropped off a cliff. This started to happen when Xbox took over 15 months ago in hardware sales because people looked to other systems for better games. I’m not dogging on the quality of their games because I love a lot of them but Nintendo just forgot some basic principles. Some people I here need to get some education before running their mouths. Period.

      1. awww did i hit a nerve? see can’t come up with an actual educational response. i have my likes and dislikes. I love nintendo products as much as the next person but what i hate is dumb ass little fanboys like you who can’t even come up with an actual response. I gave a reason why they are in the toilet. if You can’t come up with a better educational explanation then shut your retard ass up. Actually go to school. Stop being a fanboy and look at the big picture

        1. Yes, because your juvenile post (as well as some punctuation errors) definitely makes you credible as someone with an education.

        2. You don’t have to act like an ass. You don’t seem educated when doing so. But you have a point, but you and most people here miss an important point in all of this.

The amound of customers aren’t infinitive. There’s a limit to the amound of people who’s interested in a Wii. The Wii has probably already reached it’s limiit bcause it’s already in all households that feels the eager for one, and that’s a great thing, seeing how good they’ve reached out. The reason why x-box as you take for an example is doing “well” is because it’s breaking down all the ******* time so people have to buy new ones (mircrosofts sale trick no. 1).

All of this with the added fact that 3DS have been released and the Wii U around the corner seems to make up a really good reason why the Wii sales are decreased. Also, the analysist mention that this has occured for 12 months, if he was seriously analysing this so would he see a pattern with this and the 3ds release.

          tl;dr
Marked is filled and new systems steal the attention of the old ones.

    1. And you actually believe all of this somehow correlates into the decline in the gaming industry.

Notice how I didn’t actually deny your reasoning, cuz it is true, but that stuff impacts Nintendo more than it would the entire industry, I would imagine. The decline cannot in any physical way be attributed to a single party. Every player who chose to fill their own wallets rather than actually care enough to give an enjoyable game have had as much part in this supposed decline as Nintendo allegedly has.

    1. Because Nintendo is the big dog in the yard. When people think of gaming, they think of Nintendo. So any company remotely associated with gaimg will get compared to Nintendo. The best of the best.

  22. They use Nintendo as a scape goat, I take it as a compliment.

That’s right Mother-F**kers. Nintendo pulls the Video Game weight. Don’t forget it, and show respect.

  23. How can he blame Nintendo? If the statistics are true then blame these other handhelds like Apple’s iPhone and the simpleminded games of Facebook… they’re the ones stealing all Nintendo’s customers lol!!!

  24. Nintendo’s biggest problem is their complete failure to embrace social in a user friendly way.I’m looking at you friend codes. It’s impossible to find mere friend tho play on their systems.

    1. Yeah, but that’s to make it safer for the users to use their online service… But they could atleast option it in one way or another… :/

  25. though this isn’t true in the least, even if it was most all work is going into the next wii U games so of course the wii games would slow down, They are being replaced by something better. The REAL reason they are going down is because of the 3DS, The E-Shop, And the Wii U. People are buying games for the 3DS because the 3DS can do more than the wii and they are not buying new wii games cause they know soon the wii U will be out with better ones. This is because of nintendon in that case but this always happens when the people find out a new system is coming out, look back on when you all had game cubes and found out the wii was coming out.

  26. so its nintendos fault that CoD:MW3 sales have also declined? (+reported earlier)

smh, our economies are in a shit hole, yet these morons with the logic of a retarded crack baby get paid more than most of us in here. smg

  27. “Ten years ago, Nintendo largely catered to kids and Nintendo fanboys.”

    Stop reading there.

This Analyst is a troll and Anti-Nintendo Haters

Blame Call of Duty, Gran Theft Auto, Guitar Hero, Halo, Assassin Creed, and all those other games that been release more than 10 times this entire decade.

  28. I really shouldn’t be surprised by the fact an analyst said this. Only they would take a decrease in a large margin of casual players that only showed up under 6 years ago and call a threat to the gaming industry’s viability. Really, not every current electronic device has to be a tablet that does everything.

  29. “Ten years ago, Nintendo largely catered to kids and Nintendo fanboys.”

    Stop reading there.

Activision, Ubisoft, EA, Sony, Microsoft, THq, and all those other companies who spend one year or a half a year developing games and then release them and announce early or what ever they want to take your money should be blamed. Lack of new IPs is because of these companies releases the same game with updated graphic.

  30. did he really just say Nintendo was going back to kids? they spent the last 5 years doing that and just this past 12 months they have Fully shown that they are going the opposite direction (Even tho the kid direction is where the money is at) Wii sales have declined cause there’s been no games for it. What an idiot. Keep analyzing retail business and stay away from entertainment….

  31. Are all analysts retarded? First Pachter, now this asshole. The Wii’s sales are dropping because a new console is coming out this year. The economy is getting better but is still in the shitter. People don’t have as much disposable income anymore so they have to spend their money wisely when it comes to entertainment.

Why did he single out Nintendo for this rant anyway? What about Sony and MS? Do they play no part in the gaming industry? As much as we would like to think they don’t, they do. So stop trying to make a name for yourself by picking on the biggest dog in the yard. Cause that dog is preparing to bite you on the ass later this year (Wii U).

    1. This leads me to believe that Nintendo may have coaxed these analysts to intentionally spread bad press about themselves, so that when Nintendo’s E3 shows up, it will make their impact more dramatic.

  32. this is an advertisement, through nintendo rasp.. Personally i totally dislike mobiles and facebook, I got account but only some friends and I NEVER play games there..

This freaks believe that mobiles will beat consoles, cameras, dslrs, but their so wrong.. dedicated systems are the way to go..

  33. Nothing is lost here, people playing facebook and smartphone games arent considered gamers, especially angry bird players are the worst of its kind.

  34. I think it’s wrong to single out Nintendo here.

Not just Nintendo, but Sony and Microsoft have been shit on a number levels this gen. Well, Nintendo and Sony has the handhelds to fall back on atleast, both the DS and PSP were overall pretty great (even if the PSP didn’t have as comparable a games catalog to the DS until that sudden spike of good games right before the 3DS was released)

  35. More like Nintendo stopped making games for ‘casual’ gamers and hence they then moved over to Facebook games and such like. Wouldn’t have happened if Nintendo was content just to support the Wii a bit longer and make more games that sell.

And it shows exactly the crisis the wider video game industry is in.

  36. Nintendo saved gaming before, and they’ll do it again. There the only company willing to put some creativity and extra effort into a game just for the sake of being a good game and not for the sake of making more money.

  37. When I read this title I said to myself “Pachter needs to learn, Nintendo did nothing wrong”. It turned out to be someone else.

Anyway, It isn’t Nintendos fault because I’m going to ask this.

    * Why has Call Of Duty MW3 sales dropped? MW3 is primarly PC, PS3 and 360 and Nintendo is ruining the sales?

    * There is a economic recession recently, who is going to buy games and thats one reason Game went down.

    * There has not been many game releases recently, Only Ninja Gaiden and Mass Effect 3 are the big releases so far this year. There is not many games being released, later this year there will be many major game releases.

    * Nintendo is not to blaim, conclusion.

  38. These analysists seems to be newfags to video game industry. They’re thinking it works just like any other entertainment business, but there’s a BIG difference.

The video game industry is dependend on entertainment BUT also technology. The technology renews about once every 5 year or so and it’s like a life cycle, something that the video game industry is almost alone about. That means that once every 5 years the video game industry is lowering it’s profits and are loosing money at high rate because they prepare for the new life cycle, the new console war. The video game customers are probably the most aware customers in the world so they know this and don’t spend unnecessairy money to buy something that’ll be outdated in about a year, therefore the decrease right now.

Nintendo is the only company I’ve seen who uses this period in a way that gives them money. They release a handheld that enables them to sell systems during this hard time, but this also kills the old system in the progress as the haldheld takes all the spotlight from the old system (DS/GC is a really good example of this). This way Nintendo can also do a good market analyse and see what kind of games to make for the next console and by the time of that little “survey” gimmics were popular. Both developers and gamers were amused by the Touch screen so Nintendo realised that the world was ready for the Wii. But enough about that and now back to the presens.

This is also happening now with the 3ds. Nintendo is testing the graphical limits and trying to improve graphics at the same time as they’re using their gimmics in a less dominating way. Nintendo has done a good market research with the 3ds. They’ve seen that people eager for better graphics and better online experience, but also that they have a limit for what they are ready to pay (therefore they had to lower the price) this way they can avoid doing stupid misstakes when releasing the real system.

But that’s just my meaningless opinion and analyse of the video game industry since the 8 bit era, so I think those gamers who’ve played only the last 5-10 years knows alot more about what they’re talking about than I do… But I hope I’ve helped to spread some light over the current situation in the industry..

  39. I personally blame Apple. If it weren’t for them for pretty much popularising smartphone gaming, then video game systems would keep on selling as they were. People are refusing to buy these video game consoles because they’re trying to do EVERYTHING on their smartphones. It’s ruining the gaming industry, and there needs to be a breakthrough in console gaming in order to entice people back into the gaming community.
