The Wii U’s unique concept was almost scrapped due to price concerns according to Nintendo president Satoru Iwata. Nintendo ultimately wanted to make the device available for the cheapest price possible, but at the early stages of the design this wasn’t possible.
“Sometime during that final discussion we almost gave up on the idea of the additional screen. This was due to our concern over the expected high cost, it may not have been feasible to create this and sell it at a reasonable price point for the consumers.”
Wekk good hing we got it hmm?
Well good thing we got it hmm*
lol
*Translation: “Well good thing we got it, hmm?”
I am very curious where all the cuts came from to get it within the recommended price point. We already know thats why it does not play movies/music media, and it does not have a hard drive. In other words, from day one, what was the real spec sheet for the WiiU before they were force to make cuts. One could guess the CPU and GPU from the early planning phase could have been more powerful.
who said that it wasnt able to play media? you don’t need to be able to read cd’s in order to play music. and it has netfilx and amazon instant video support so it can play movies…..soo…..
Yes Stratisfire, I know that. If you read my comments, I am talking about the initial planning phase. Clearly they had other capabilities for the WiiU that they couldn’t implement to keep the cost down. I am just curious what never made it to the retail version of WiiU. For example was it improved CPU/GPU or something else?
Huh, interesting. Same with the 3DS screen being too expensive, till just recently.
Lets be thankful that this revolutionary technology is alive and will be a manifest for our gaming hunger
So the Wii U will be weak?
Weak in what sense?
Remember we know nothing about the PS4 and 720 since they don’t exist at this moment in time.
So at the moment the Wii U is the most powerful console.
Of course that means nothing to me.

Would be interesting to know how they’ve cut the price though

that’s nintendo for you. always wanting to give consumers the best for less.
It’s a good thing they didn’t scrap it. It’s an amazing piece of technology. Leave luck to heaven.
this makes mii more curios about the price
