Super Smash Bros. Developer Project Sora Closes

Project Sora, which was a subsidiary of Nintendo, has been dissolved. According to Andriasang, a message appears on the studio’s website that says, as of June 30th, Project Sora is closed. The website is scheduled to close on July 31st. Perhaps the studio dissolved due to the fact that Namco Bandai is co-developing the next Super Smash Bros. games, along with Masahiro Sakurai and Sora Ltd., for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS.

Thanks, TOBI

So what will happen with the developers? Will they go ahed and form their own dev team like Sora with other devs or will they go back to HAL?

        1. no forget what i said its project sora thats closing not sora ltd so sakurai still has his job as the bossman of sora ltd

            1. If a recall correctly, though I’m not positive, I remember Sikr referring to Alba as a ‘he’ when someone questioned why Alba never posted a comment. However, I will agree the name is somewhat effeminate

    1. it’s already finish project sora only made kid icarus uprising it was only a temporary team e32010 iwata

While still following what Sakurai says, if Namco Bandai was developing it all by themseleves, they’d screw it up by making it another Tekken.

        1. not really…they do more than just tekken….they got soul calibur…and the gundam vs games which are really cool…and the Tales series ( which some play almost like an arena fighter themselves)….also, seeing as how they are enlisting help from several different of their studios…hopefully they enlist cyberconnect2 with whom they have a great relationship with.

what this does mean is that there may be some serious changes coming to the series…i think it will go into 3d gameplay now….but so long as they keep a lot of smash bros mechanics..or at least introduce smash bros relevant mechanics…it should be fine…plus…i was starting to feel the series get a tad stale…this could breath new life into the series

          1. im not sure about 3d to me smash bros has always been about minding you surroundings and having full view of the action

            1. yeah it would definitely be different if it were to play out that way….im just saying that cause basically all of namco’s experience with fighters is for 3d gameplay.

sakurai did say he felt a change in direction was needed

    1. Project Sora is the subsidiary of Sora Ltd. and Nintendo as the two companies work together. Sora Ltd is the actual company working on Smash Bros as well as worked on Kid Icarus Uprising. Project Sora is the small company owned between the two (Sora and Nintendo) to show their collaboration.

        1. yeah..but sora limited isnt really a game developer…mainly an agency built to contract sakurai as a freelance game designer

        2. They’re also classified as a second-party, meaning Sakurai will develop exclusively for Nintendo, but not necessarily be published by Nintendo.

    2. no i think sakurai and some of his chosen workers from sora will just go to namco bandai studios then when its done sakurai probsbly returns to hal laboratory

    1. Don’t confuse Sora and Project Sora. Sora is the company that Sakurai owns, and Project Sora is the company made between Sora and Nintendo.

And the only game they made so far is Kid Icarus: Uprising.

      1. Project Sora only made Kid Icarus: Uprising.
Sora made Brawl, Meteos, KC: Uprising, and the upcoming SSB4.

  2. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!*Gasp* NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *Collapses due to lack of breath* Sad…..

    1. Errr, they still have Sora Ltd, project Sora was a small company with a mixture between Nintendo and Sora.

      1. Well the article above can be a bit misleading…I can see why people would think the employees of Project Sora were being “let go”

  3. I’m honestly not that surprised. Sora isn’t working on Smash Bros and we haven’t heard anything else on them since Kid Icarus. I imagine the developers will go back to HAL or something.

If they do go back to HAL, perhaps Nintendo can get them to work on a Kid Icarus Wii U game.

      1. Conflicts with Nintendo over the development of Kirby Air Ride was what made him leave.

And the fact that he doesn’t like sequels. The only way he agrees to do one is if he gets to reinvent the wheel for it.

    1. “I’m honestly not that surprised. Sora isn’t working on Smash Bros” It’s amazing how stupid people are. Sora Ltd is still around and making the next Smash with assistance from Namco. Several people have said this above you but why bother to read that when you can sprout your drivel?

      1. your actually jumping to conclusions yourself there buddy. Also, before project sora…Sora ltd was just an agency that would contract out sakurai as a freelance game designer…it was never a full blown developer..mainly just an agency…with project sora gone..its likely that it has returned to what its always been..and that is not a game developer…but an agency

  4. thekidnintendowiiman

Wait, it’s Project Sora that’s closing not Sora Ltd, Project Sora worked on Uprising and Sora Ltd is working on SSB 4 so most likely the guys from Project Sora will go to Sora Ltd.

    1. What are you saying? His “developments” have produced some of the best games of all time….are you mental, bro?

    1. thekidnintendowiiman

“This entry was posted in 3DS, Nintendo, Wii U and tagged 3DS, namco bandai, Nintendo, project sora, super smash bros, wii u by alba”
      I guess he does sleep.

  5. Project Sora was only made for Kic Icarus Uprising, stop with all the sad faces. Your completely reading the wrong cause its worded wrong.

  6. Please explain in the article that Project Sora closing has nothing to do with Sora Ltd and SSB. Project Sora were the guys behind Uprising since there won’t be sequel for Icarus for at least another 10 to 15 even 20 years Project Sora really has no reason to be open. Most of the staff probably moved over to SSB4 development. Remember, SSB4 is being developed simultaneously for the 3DS and WiiU. Please stop inflating this story when there is so little information about it.

    1. actually according to wikipedia….it was project sora that was working on the new smash bros.

      also

“Sora was built as an agency that would contract Sakurai as a freelance video game designer to different companies. Masahiro Sakurai’s first project under Sora was designing Meteos with Q Entertainment”

project sora itself isnt really a full blown developer

basically..namco is making smash bros…which may not be a bad thing..i think people need to give these guys a shot….Sora LTD is still involved, but more so in the form of providing Sakurai which whome the connect to projects of other developers seeing as how they are more agency than full on developers….Sakurai is still the lead designer..so there should be no worry….he just has a team of developers more experienced with fighting games working under him now…everything should be fine and probably better than before even.

      1. the development staff acquired to make smash bros brawl ultimately turned into project sora….so basically…project sora developed smash bros and was developing smash bros wiiu

          1. sora ltd is really just an agency built to contract sakurai out as a freelance game designer…..the staff acquired to develop smash bros by sora ltd eventually turned into project sora…so now that project sora is done…they dont retain those employees anymore….and the company mainly goes back to being an agency contracting out sakurai as a freelance game designer

            1. No it doesn’t. As someone who has applied for an art job at Sora Ltd I can tell you it is a company. You’ve said that two or three times now so either you’re misinformed (in which case fair enough, now you know) or talking out your arse.

Oh and to the guy who said Wiki say Project Sora are making the game, Wiki has never lied has it? Turnip.

              1. just cause you applied to it doesnt mean its not an agency. It could have been accepting applications to then contract out to other developers. Thats how agency’s work.

so that when so and so developer is looking for people to fill art positions; they can contract you for it.

if im wrong, then fine. but i’d like to be proven wrong..so…

                do you read japanese?
also, where did you go to apply. are you able to provide a link to the site you used to apply?

                http://arstechnica.com/uncategorized/2006/11/8296/

                http://www.cbc.ca/news/health/story/200 … 51215.html

wikipedia at least offers some credibility….more so than joe blow jumping to conclusions at least…and the intention was for project sora to develop the wiiu smash bros….given that they are now shutting down, it now looks like they may never have been a part of the development at all…but they were suppose to.

            2. Would you kindly stop saying that as Sora Ltd is an actual company, not “an agency built to contract” Sakurai. Dunno where you got that from. If you’ve read it somewhere then fair enough but it’s wrong. I should know as I have applied for an art job there and have an interview in August. Why would I have one of it was just an agency?

              1. ok..then what i read would have been wrong. i can accept being wrong. But you interviewing doesnt automatically make it not an agency…i’ve had full blown interviews with agencies before..its not out of the norm.

    1. That’s exactly what I was thinking as well. Nonetheless, Project Sora had accomplished a lot with Uprising. But it looks like it was just a small branch of Sora Ltd. Sora Ltd will continue to work on the next SSB title for Wii U/3DS.

  7. Aww that sucks. :( At least they made a good Kid Icarus game that made me enjoy the shooter genre a lot!

  8. Smh damn I aint buying a console where the company takes 2-3 years to make a game smh i buy a console to play games not gather dust. These smucks need to stop be lazy and work a little hard besides 2-3 yrs and the games still a glitch fest smh fuck ups

  9. Meh. They ruined the kid icurus franchise besides bad controls, glitches and stuff it was so bland and unoriginal. Its as if they swithed sprites with god of war.

  10. @thedragon234 hes got a point ocarina.starfox and others took a long time and the graphical enviornments were meh. Look at skyward sword it was teased at 2009 e3 and released near the end of 2011 unexcusable and it just was a windwaker clone anyways

  11. Idiots.
Project Sora weren’t developing SSB, that was Sora, a separate entity. Project Sora were the minds behind Kid Icarus. This is really sad, people who are giving us NEWS can’t use Google properly.

  12. @sentinal first of all love your name, secoundly its true kid icurus borrows certain elements from god of war obviously the violence is tone down .

  13. Project Sora was formed by Sora Ltd, freelance game designets and Nintendo staff just to make Kid Icarus Uprising so it’s no surprise at all that they’ve shut.

  14. Putting all of their focus on SSB4 now. They’re going to try to get this thing finished and in the hands of gamers as soon as possible. SSB4 is gonna be EPIC! Leave luck to heaven.

    1. I wish you can name the punchbag anything you want. I would gladly call it Aeolus! and FALCON PUNCH him! ;) over and over

    1. But it wasnt like Project Sora was being let go or anything….the time that the team was collaborating for was just up. It isnt really a bad thing.

  16. Wow Project Sora has been closed down? I wonder what impact that will have on the future of SSB. Anyways, I trust Namco and the Sakurai’s team that are working on the next smash

  17. wikipedia:

“Project Sora was dissolved on June 30th. [4] Development of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS was moved to Namco Bandai under the supervision of Sora Ltd.”

  18. Namco,

I will entrust you the franchise but if you screw up the entire game, I’m going to form an angry mob and go after your heads. The same goes for Nintendo.
