Nintendo DLC Won’t Make Consumers Feel ‘Cheated Or Deceived’

Nintendo confirmed that paid downloadable content will be available for New Super Mario Bros. 2. According to Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, the publisher plans to create DLC in a way that consumers won’t feel like they’ve been betrayed; Nintendo doesn’t plan to create a game with the intension of keeping things out for paid DLC.

And one thing Nintendo has determined as a company policy, what we are not going to do is create a full game and then say, ‘let’s hold this back for DLC.’ That’s not our plan. We’re definitely not doing that. It’s an extreme example, but I think there are examples of games where you get that initial purchase—the very core part of the game—and everything else around it is all DLC. However, if you do that I believe customers will have no motivation to go out and buy the retail package to begin with.

“So our goal is to create DLC in such a way that consumers do not feel that they have been cheated or deceived. Now I believe there are people out there, readers, who have are worried about that, and we just want to ensure them that we have that in mind and want them to know that that’s not what we are planning on doing.”

    1. Agree with you I remember Capcom use to have plenty of content and Easter eggs in their old games. Now they just rip you off big time. Only game Capcom did a good job on was Asyra’s Wrath. Other than that they all have been shit. Every new fighting game Capcom makes have ridiculous combos and feels like they are not even been tested. The standard for these new fighting games are now the glitches that were in the old ones not to mention that RE6 demo was completely garbage. Zombies communicate with each other and use guns what kind of survival horror is that? But it’s good to see Nintendo is not making DLC before the game is released like those fuckers at Capcom.

      1. Nintendo+resident evil=😃

Capcom did do a lot of things right too like having a contaract with marvel to make a popular fighting game and also from the looks of it RE6 is gonna be a good game even though I havent played the demo because I don’t have Xbox it still looks better than RE5 but that is just my opinion you are entitled to your own but just saying capcom hasn’t done everything wrong but that’s just saying

    1. Not in some cases. Extra levels two months after the game is released=good. Day-1 DLC and unlocking stuff already on the disc=bad *coughEAcoughCapcomcough*

    2. Wait…let me rephrase it…like when a developer doesn´t put the full game in the disk.(sorry for the misunderstanding.)

    3. The idea of preorder DLC sucks. I’m supportive of DLC that’s actually made after the game is finished and released, though.

      1. What’s wrong with giving loyal fans a bonus, and don’t be like well it should just be in the game, they could have easily not made it at all

  1. I like DLC that is done right. I like them expanding the game by maybe one world or more challenging levels. If they hold back content for DLC, then the game might not be worth it (unless the game is sold for less than it is to make up the DLC or if it free DLC, which will most likely not happen)

        1. HOW DARE YOU INSULT MEEE!!! You fanboys understand nothing about dlc!! Dlc is stupid! That’s why halo suks!! Omg oh well they don’t do ddlc on my iphone so hahaha. Suxs 4U guyzzz!!!!

      1. THEKIDNINTENDOWIIMAN

I wish TF2 goes to the Wii U and gets constantly updated like the PC version. Imagine playing Mann vs. Machine on the controller.

  2. We’re looking at your Crapcom. DLC can be a very good thing as long as it’s not abused as the case with Capcom. As long as Nintendo stays true to their word about releasing DLC only after completely finishing a product. I won’t mind paying for the extra content.

        1. NEW SUPAH MARIO BRATHAS YOU! FEATURING DLC: PEACH, WALUWIGI, AND DAISIY! ALREADY PRE-LOADED CHARACTERS INCLUDING MARIO, TOAD, AND WEEGEE! GET TO PLAY AS THE BRATHAS ONLY YOU CAN ENJOY!

    1. And also zelda, same game every time but diffferent places, wtf does LINK HAs amNESIa evERYRIME or SOMEting!!!!!????LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

  4. A recent game I can remember is gravity rush. I was upgrading all my abilities and noticed some weren’t upgraded all the way. Go on to ps network and noticed the DLC. Wtf man not only did I feel like the story was total crap I also didn’t get the full game I fucking paid for. I give Nintendo a few years before they do the same thing. Business is business after all. DLC is good Money.

    1. That would be sweet, extra mansions ftw, maybe some ones from other games, like Hyrule Castle, or the ghost mansion from Mario Sunshine

  5. The only DLC I’ve ever bought is a song pack on Samba de Amigo for Wii and 2 songs for Theatrhythm Final Fantasy on 3DS.

  6. I find the very concept of DLC insulting. I feel cheated just by the fact that they have begun to utilize DLC, no matter what they’re strategy for it is.

  7. Hopefully Nintendo gives DLC of that old multiplayer game from the first New Super Mario Bros. for the DS. That little coin car between Mario and Luigi was so addicting! It’d be nice to have it playable online, but I’d still take it even if it were only local.

  8. Gotta hate DLC, even if it is good, even if worth paying for it, not everybody have money, some people can barely buy games after monts of saving. if you se a good DLC but can’t pay for it, you just feel bad with an empty game. I don’t know if every country wil have those things available. I’m from Costa Rica and the last time i remenber checking the E-shop, it only had an outdated list of games in stores and the patch for mario kart 7, and that wes one month ago.

  9. Bing Bang Boom!!! Im not a big fan of DLC… I like when it is free like the Minecraft updates! :) Bop Bam Blip!!!

  10. They used to make expansion packs to a game and it was worth it because it was as much content as the original game, but DLC is mostly a rip off, map packs are rip offs, paying for skins or weapons are a rip off, paying for content unlocked on the disc is a rip off.

  11. This is off topic and may sound dumb but I think it would be kind of cool if they made a 3d mario game but Donkey Kong is the main villain. Mario could like travel through the jungle to get peach back or something. Or maybe DK stole peach because Bowser framed him or something by stealing something of DK’s. I don’t know it just popped in my head today. Maybe I’m stupid or it has already been done but I think it sounds cool.

  12. I’m certain there will be some things that aren’t up to this statement- However, I’m sure Nintendo titles will be much more consumer friendly than other titles.
If other developers request to use their ridiculous DLC methods, I think Nintendo should go with it to maintain strong 3rd party support. It should also bring in plenty of revenue. And then, when Wii U and 3DS get strong 1st party multiplayer titles, people will see what they’ve been missing for so long.

Here’s to hoping that Smash Bros. Next has additional levels down the line, or maybe posted creations.
