Ubisoft Compares Assassin’s Creed To Super Mario

Assassin’s Creed was originally meant to be a trilogy, but publisher Ubisoft plans to turn it into a long-running franchise like Super Mario or Resident Evil. Assassin’s Creed III creative director Alex Hutchinson says that even though both franchises have good and bad games, Nintendo will continue adding new installments to Super Mario as will Capcom with Resident Evil.

“Since when is something less amazing if you get a new one every year?”

“The way we see Assassin’s Creed 3 now is as a franchise, like Mario or Resident Evil, that will have its ups and downs. It wasn’t the original plan to be an ongoing series, no, but it became the plan. The curse of success, for want of better phrase.

“But if you can keep a series interesting and fresh then I don’t see why it shouldn’t go on. Nintendo has been great at reinvigorating their franchises, as have other Japanese companies, so we feel we can too.”

  1. Isn’t this the same company that insulted Mario for being redundant in a story EARLIER TODAY?

This is why I hate talking heads…

    1. Whoops, misused “talking heads” there.

This is why I loathe when company PR doesn’t have a tight enough grip on their developers’ tongues.

                1. except for the fact that they’re making PS3s and Xboxs with insanely small hard drives that are catered specifically for the CoD audience, you blundering idiot. Since you suck much Sony cock, I’d think you would have figured out that’s what the 16 gb PS3 is for.

              1. Uhh no it doesn’t just because cod has a lot of sales i mean i like the games but i know the games arent that great that their made of gold

            1. They’re critically acclaimed and always to do something different and unique. They’re still quality series that are filled with creativity, all except for the 2D Mario’s. But, hey, you’re Aeolus. Anything Nintendo sucks because you hate Nintendo.

              1. Even the current reviewers are pointing out how much of a rehash NSMB2 is, you put any other videogame character in those games instead of Mario and I’ll bet my bottom dollar the scores would be different.

Nintendo games always get rated higher than they should be. That’s an industry fact and a known double standard.

                    1. *Laughs* So basically because you don’t like Nintendo, seeing as you’re completely biased against them, the reviewers are biased FOR Nintendo? So because Nintendo exclusives like Super Mario Galaxy or Skyward Sword are rated high, it’s because of a double-standard? FYI, they’re rated high because they’re great games. You wouldn’t say the same thing if it was about Sony, would you?

                    2. Skyward getting 10s for being basically the same Zelda game it has always been with motion controls tossed in. I’m surrrrre that’s a well deserved 10 over the likes of PROPER Skyrim versions or Dark Souls.

And yes I would actually, I find several of their titles to be overrated, as with MS. But that isn’t relevant here.

            2. … The more sales made, the more people buying, possibly ENJOYING, and being motivated to buy the next game. So yes, I’d say they have a direct impact on both.

        1. Nintedward . Wiiu . 3ds . 1991 .

what ???? mario is the most popular and most important franchise on earth. by far.
add up all the mario games , today and all the way through gaming history.
cod and angry birds are like dirty underwhere compared to mario.

            1. Doesn’t matter about their intelligence (even though it has no effect on their choice of games), it is their wallets that mould the gaming industry. If a Mario game sells 6 million units, you simply cannot say it is irrelevant without making an idiot of yourself.

              1. It only sells to dimwitted parents looking forward to a game for the kiddies. The salesman suggests Mario and they’ll buy it. Simple as that.

Core gamers don’t care about Mario anymore, except for his 3D games. Even then, they won’t be buying a $300+ console just for that.

                1. Even if that is the case, even though it clearly isn’t, it doesn’t matter who buys the games, if it sells, you know you can make a similar product and get similar results. If it gets good reviews, you know you are making a quality product and people like it. As far as I can see, your argument has zero ground to stand on. You simply have no points to effectively argue against me. Mario sells millions, it gets great reviews. It is relevent. End of story.

                  1. Overrated reviews* Doesn’t seem to be the case when reviewers are now making it clear that the series is doing little more than rehashing itself. Just like Modern Warfare.

Face it, Mario is absolutely irrelevant for today’s gamers. It only sells to casuals and little else and then gets forgotten in no time until the next platformer is announced.

                    1. Ok then, so Mario is not relevant? Let’s look at the articles, reviews and comments written about the new Mario games in all of the major video game websites. Let’s look at the high review scores. Let’s look at the overall praise the franchise is getting to this day. Let’s look at Galaxy 2 being one of major the contenders of GtoY of 2010. Let’s look at Mario being the staple of platformers to this very day. If Mario is not relevant, why does it get so much media attention and is the face of the console gaming industry.

                    2. How are those articles indicative of ANYTHING? That applies to ANY GAME to this day.

Oh and by the way, these games are not getting praised to this date, they show up and get forgotten within a week or two while other AAA titles get nearly endless coverage and videos, maybe with a sales report for Mario games depending on how fanboyish the site is. The only reason Mario gets his scores is nostalgia, there are better platformers out there, it’s not even funny anymore. Galaxy 2 did a good job innovating nothing and basically just being an expansion pack, because that is what it was.

Also no; Mario is not “the face of gaming” these days, it isn’t the 90s anymore. Time to wake up. You’re a
“face of gaming” when you legitimately contribute to the evolution of it on a consistent basis, something Mario has not done since his 64 games and maybe, maybe to some extent Galaxy, but the latter doesn’t matter when motion controls cannot and WILL NOT replace the standard controller. Mario can sit down and rot for all the real gamers out there care.

                2. I’m a core gamer, and I would buy a Mario, both 2D and 3D. I would even buy a console just for that.

I suppose you now will insult me with name-calling, and so be it. You’re wrong, simple as that. Mario is highly relevant.

                  1. Anyone can call themselves a “core gamer” when they are actually casuals. You’re probably a casual and a Nintendo fan to boot, therefore your opinion doesn’t matter.

                    1. I play my PC more with the likes of Skyrim and Battlefield … oh wait, my girlfriend and I enjoy Mario games … we must be casual gamers then … LOL who the fuck cares whether they are labelled hardcore gamers are not. Just play games you want to play and don’t worry about what this so called “hardcore” gamer has to say. I’d rather be called casual then belong to the hardcore group, why? I don’t have to put up with people like you.

                  1. No they don’t, trust me. Otherwise the sales would be showing core gamers buying them and not total casuals.

If they cared about it so much, you’d be getting a hell of a lot more Mario coverage than other series. Trust me, the majority do not care besides Nintendo fans and said casuals.

    1. Aeolus, you aren’t making any sense. If Mario is still selling games, with impressive sales, it means he’s being talked about and reviewed, thus becoming relevant.

  2. Dont compare !!! NO dont compare this Shit with Mario !!! Never say that again !!! Assassin creed is a Shitty game … Mario is a great wonder game from Mr Miyamoto !!!

    1. If you’re a troll trying to act like a fanboy you got it right.

If this is your actuall opinion: GTFO before Aeolus & co. kicks your ass and takes your name!

    2. “was”. It was a great wonder game from Mr Miyamoto, not is. He doesn’t make games anymore, he’s just a creative director. Also, I look forward to the spinoff platformers more than the main series these days…the Paper Mario and Mario Galaxy games > the entire New Super Mario Bros. stuff they’ve been putting out over the past few years.

        1. Nintedward . Wiiu . 3ds . 1991 .

they are like a side spin off. a very good one . mario kart is an individual ip.
you are right , 3d mario has barely been touched at all , let alone rinsed.
the new super games are still awesome! i just got nsmb2 on 3ds. believe me its incredible.
the gameplay is 30 years of love crafted into a game.

    3. I agree with my boyfriend here.

Assassin creed is so crappy and like lame.

Now if you excuse me I need to go shag my mother, but don’t tell my boyfriend.

    4. Did you even read the article? Ubisoft are comparing AC to Mario in terms of being a long running franchise, not the actual quality of the series or the actual gameplay.

And seriously, go play AC2 and tell me it is shit. I dare you.

    5. Behold! Another “smart” person who thinks that they know everything from reading the title and that only their opinion is right!

    6. assasins creed and mario suck both !! they are complete rehashes every time!! lol these games suck compared to angry birds

    1. Actually, each COD has been in development for two years. Hence the reason why there are two companies working on the game, Treyarch and Infinity Ward.

    1. According to some Sunshine is the best one, so it clearly doesn’t count..

..but have you heard about Hotel Mario?

      1. I thought Sunshine was good, but not the best, had alot of annoying parts, Galaxy is still my overall favourite when it comes to the platforming titles.

Hotel Mario is so bad…but its the CDi game so not blaming Nintendo for that xD

  3. No offence Ubisoft, 1 was meh, 2 was amazing, Brotherhood was ok, and Revelations made me want to murder you.

AC4, you better have some modern levels or even future or First Humans type thing, with you’re weird, futuristic past that got destroyed

    1. Yeah, Revelations felt really gimmicky. But I think Assassin’s Creed could possibly work as a franchise, as long as they try new ideas out and don’t ruin the entire thing. Yeah, it’ll have both good and bad games but that’s how franchises are, even Zelda and Mario had a few bad games.

      1. Having played all Zelda’s, could you tell me which one or more you are referring to? Closest thing I could name is Zelda 2, but that was more different. It kinda sucks in the beginning, being extremely hard, but it gets more fun as you progress and easier as well.

        1. In my opinion, Zelda 2 was a good game, but it was just like Mario 2, a trial to see what people prefered.

Phantom Hourglass was good but not as good as the rest, and i think i remember Spirit Tracks being better the PH, not sure.
Everyone always has preferences on Zelda, some people dont like Twilight Princess, while id say it was my favourite one

          1. Oh yeah, I kinda like PH and ST, but not a whole lot I guess. I prefer ST over PH. Twilight Princess is my favourite as well.

      1. What change my mind to buy it? I really doubt it.

I don’t care for Ubisoft and I don’t care for the Assassin’s Creed franchise.

Furthermore Assassin’s Creed looks and plays exactly like the first two games just in a different setting.

The story is also stupid as well.

  4. Pingback: Assassin’s Creed Takes a Lesson From Mario

    1. Because it’s boring and bring nothing new what so ever.

Hell when I first saw it I thought it was a Prince of Persia spin-off rather than a new “IP”

It also take itself far to seriously when I just what to have fun in my Video games.

    2. Its because a lot of nintendo fanboys hate any game NOT on their consoles, now a real fan would respect all games even if they don’t enjoy it but since their isn’t a good assasins creed on a nintendo platform, the fanboys will hate it. Because its a good game they don’t have. Just like with halo and tons of other games, if those were both nintendo exclusives then nintendo fanboys would be crying over how great they are. And how they have better exclusives, All fanboys act that way. And I stress I’m talking about nintendo fanboys not real nintendo fans.

      1. Or maybe they just aren’t interested in the game at all and find it boring?

“now a real fan would respect all games even if they don’t enjoy it”

Not really I am a “real” video game fan and I hated Epic Mickey and as result I don’t respect it at all.

        1. The way I meant it is to respect others opinions. I have never played it but the majority of those who have, like the game, so it must be a pretty good title.

      2. This^^ Nintendrones are fucking hypocrites ..I bet that if AC3 wasnt coming to wii u THEY WON’T BUY IT..but since its coming to wii u ..all the Nintendrones are praising it …

        1. Id buy it, its been my most anticipated game of the year. But i can wait a month or two to get it on the WiiU instead of my PS3

      3. This is so true with some nintendo gamers, but i like all gaming.
I think Halo is a great game, great multiplayer, but ive never bought one because i dont see the point in buying an xbox for pretty much the only game i want (besides indie games)

  5. Meh, I always saw this coming. I don’t mind, seeing that Assassin’s Creed is my favourite non-Nintendo franchise, but I hope they don’t over do it. Brotherhood and Revelations were simply not as good as 2, but they were still very enjoyable to me. But I do not want a new AC every year, which is what we have been getting the last three (soon to be four) years. I would rather have an amazing game every two years than a good one every year, which is exactly what we got in the gap between 1 and 2.

But I do see why they are doing this. Assassins Creed is a very well-known and beloved franchise, so of course they want to make more games quickly to get more money. The sad truth is that Mario, Assassins Creed and many other franchises are developing business strategies like CoD. Some ways this is good, some ways this it is bad, and it is all because of money, because that is why the gaming industry exists, money. If publishers and developers did not make it, they won’t bother, simple as that.

    1. I reckon they will go with a Mario like selling strategy though. Sell the main game in the series (AC1,2,3,4,5…) every two or three years and in the time between that sell other games that extend that games story or are complete spinoffs.

  6. Assassins Creed really is a great franchise, and though I am skeptical about the idea of continuing the series with yearly installments, I understand what Ubisoft is trying to do. They’re trying to find their Mario, their Call of Duty, their Halo. I’m open to the idea of yearly installments, but Ubisoft will need to be careful. They can’t stick to the same concept year after year, that only works with a few exceptions. Ubisoft will really need to find ways to convince gamers to buy the new game every year, and when you’re trying to get there, it’s hard. Most big franchises that have yearly installments weren’t made with the intention in mind, it just kind of happened. Mario wasn’t created to become this iconic character, but when he did, Nintendo took the character and ran away with it. So if Ubisoft wants Assassins Creed to be in the same boat, it’s going to take luck and lots of work. Otherwise, I’m an open minded gamer, and look forward to see where this will go.

    1. That would be terrible. A repetitive linear mario game combined with the exploration of assasins creed would not work. What don’t these nintendrones see? Mario is too linear to be mixed with AC.

  7. Now they are going to milk AC like gay shitty mario? Oh great, we really need 1000 more of those games ..and u Nintendrones are huge fat hypocrites …you guys never shown interest in the AC series coz it never was on a shitty Nintendo console now that it’s coming to wii u you fags are buying it ..I bet if AC3 wasnt coming to the wii u ..you wouldnt buy it ! Same with zombiU ..if that that didn’t come to wii u than you WOULDN’T BUY IT !! And I thought you Nintendrones hated violent games ? LOL HYPOCRITES !!

        1. Haha, btw ness, all fanboys are like that. Doesn’t that make you a hypocrite though with you saying that Nintendo fans hate/didn’t care about games until it’s on a Nintendo system when you seem to hate Nintendo’s franchises that you don’t own?

    1. Your theory is completely out of context. Assasins Creed is an excellent series, but it is not worth to go out and buy a whole new system for. The fact that it comes to the Wii U makes it available so us “fanboys” would buy it.

  8. Aeolus is a pile of dog crap. He disagrees only for the sake of disagreement. He has no valid argument whatsoever and uses articles and rumors only when it suits his senseless rabble. On certain occasions he will use articles and rumours to try and justify his crap and on other occasions he try and dismiss these articles as “irrelevant”. Aeolus U R such a useless tool it’s humorous.

  9. I’m not sure about Assassin Creed being a yearly franchise. We’ll have to see how it turns out. Leave luck to heaven.

  10. I’m all for it! Never can get enough Assassin’s Creed! It was also imperative that the games had to come out as they did, because the games all take place in 2012…which is now this year. So whatever’s going to happen with Desmond in Assassin’s Creed 3 HAS to release THIS YEAR, otherwise the value of the story slightly drops. Besides, anyone who’s actually played the games know that each game is hardly a rehash and instead builds upon what was already established in previous games. AC2 improved upon assassinations, collectibles, high/low profile actions, better blending, while Brotherhood allowed you to summon assassins at almost any time, as well as introducing the full synchronization optional objectives, and the extra requirements to renovate towns, such as killing the captains and destroying the towers, and that’s not even including quicker executions and subweaponry. ACR brings both Altair and Ezio to a close, while introducing bomb crafting and the hook blade, and finally makes weapons and subweapons separate. Rehashes? Please. And from what I see in AC3, it gets MUCH BETTER. Moving hay piles? Standing safe spots? Tomahawk? New game engine? It gets much, much better.

    1. How did you not hate Revelations? xD haha the whole game was about the bombs, or designed in such a way that of you didnt use them you were at a severe disadvantage. Thats not how i want my AC games, i like being able to approach a situation however i like. The bombs were forced. Then there was the Base Defend parts….i hate games like enough that arent on the PC, but god, it was so annoying

  11. Every game series has its fans, and they’re all deserved. If you like COD, that’s great! Play COD. If you like Mario, sweet! Play Mario! If you like both? Play both!

I’m not understanding what the issue is here…

    1. What? A reasonable response? A calm attitude? Blasphemy!

Seriously though, you’re right. There are games I don’t like, but it doesn’t make them bad. Play what you enjoy, don’t play what you don’t enjoy. Simple.
