BioShock creator: Nintendo Switch 2 and Steam Machine prove graphics have reached “diminishing returns”

The creator behind the acclaimed Bioshock series Ken Levine has spoken about a number of subjects with IGN. One thing that was touched on was that flashy visuals have now reached the point of “diminishing returns.” Levine points to the Nintendo Switch 2, the Steam Deck and even the upcoming Steam Machine as proof that current video game hardware is more than adequate enough on the visual front. However, both Microsoft and Sony are readying their next generation consoles thought to be arriving next year, but could be pushed back due to component shortages.

“[Realism] doesn’t age as well as more stylistic things,” Levine told IGN. “BioShock still looks good, I think, because it wasn’t trying to get every nut and bolt super realistic.” Combined with players’ want for more accessible hardware, such as the Nintendo Switch 2 and even the Steam Deck, Levine posits that hardware is good enough for anything developers want to do.

“Look at say, the Switch 2 and [even] the new Steam Machine coming out,” he continued. “Those are not massive technological upgrades. That wasn’t their strategy. I think, people are realising we’re hitting a bit of diminishing returns with that.”

  1. A great point. I love Bioshock so dang much, just replayed on my Deck last year. Has aged wonderfully!

  2. He’s right. Demon’s Souls on PS3 looks exceptionally better than the remake on PS5. I played the remake before I played the original on emulator, and yeah the remake loses so much of its stylistic identity due to the hyper realistic graphics. Even Miyazaki doesn’t like to talk about the remake.

      1. It will come, for sure, but, honestly, I don’t see how big of a leap will be compared to what we have now. The leap from the PS4 to the PS5 wasn’t that huge, actually – a lot of PS5 games could’ve been ported to PS4 with minimal loss. They’re stretching way too much in graphic fidelity that it almost plateau’d.

      1. Oh yeah let me put on my glasses.. I forgot I had baldurs gate 3, metaphor refantazio and clair obscur in my backlog for switch 2 thanks man! Can’t wait to play gta 6 day one brb…

        1. Maybe try laser eye surgery?

Ah silly me, I forgot that those four games were the only third-party games in existence.

  3. Off topic, but I bet the next switch online game will be either Mario sunshine or Pokemon colosseum this evening with their soundtrack added alongside their release to Nintendo music. Let’s see if my prediction is right.

  4. What is especially true is that the colossal power of graphics cards is never fully exploited at their release due to an obvious cost issue…

I don’t know how much computing power the most demanding game uses, but I doubt that the RTX 5090 or even the 4090 are running at full capacity.

It makes you wonder if this escalation in Tflops is really useful….

  5. This is a poor judgement call coming from a developer.

If there’s diminishing returns then how come there can be quite a bit of difference comparing high end PC vs Switch 2 games?

Anyway, even if you avoid that point.. there’s still the frame rate, games like Cyberpunk that was the best version for performance since release runs at sub 30FPS on Switch 2.

    1. I meant to say the PC version of Cyberpunk was best since launch.

Plus, this system has no hope of running something like GTA 6, the game would be super watered down with cut content.

PS5 is barely enough for GTA 6 because of the lacking CPU, so a handheld isn’t going to hold a candle to something that can barely hold up.

      1. 2K, 4K, and other resolutions require a lot of power and are completely pointless in terms of gameplay.
Stop talking nonsense, Cyberpunk 2077 on Switch 2 is perfectly smooth and stable.
How can you know about GTA 6 when we know NOTHING about the game?!
The CPU is no longer the deciding factor; GPUs do almost everything, and comparing the PS5 and Switch 2 is absurd. They are two very different consoles. The Switch 2 has features that the PS5 doesn’t.

  6. Minecraft Unlimited Resources gives players endless materials for building and crafting in the game world. Players can create large houses, castles, farms, and underground bases without worrying about running out of blocks or tools. This style of gameplay helps people focus more on creativity, exploration, and fun projects instead of collecting resources again and again. Many players enjoy unlimited resources because it makes building faster, easier, and more exciting.
