Outspoken Wedbush Morgan industry analyst Michael Pachter is of the opinion that developers need to start charging consumers for multiplayer modes. Pachter thinks that the continued growth of free multiplayer will continue to hurt development studios.
“Gamer fatigue will fix itself with new consoles, and the continuing growth of free multiplayer will end up causing game companies to lose money overall and to limit choice if they don’t address it.”
“The solution is to figure out a way to charge for multiplayer, but gamers have a sense of entitlement, believing ‘once free, always free’, so this one is tricky.”
“I think the solution is to roll out serialized multiplayer content and charge something nominal, like $1 per week. We’ll see who makes the first move, but I’m betting it’s Activision.”

phuck off patcher .
charge this ”flips the bird”
what the fvck, if they do it. Id rather play Free TO Play PC games.
i personaly wouldnt go that far , lol . i hate pc gaming an all that crap . i stick to nintendo . sometimes i play my ps3 and 360 . only when an absoloutly stellar title comes out for them .
PC gaming is better in most aspects, the only flaw is them not having Nintendo Titles.
I only PC game for Team Fortress 2, and Team Fortress 2 alone. The rest is Nintendo gaming.
me too bad econmy cant aford too dish out more cash
we need to kill this dude he the main villain in gaming.
Hes just being realistic here…. Online multiplayer cost tens of millions or hundreds of millions just for developers to maintain the servers. Alot of developers are not making profit due to increasing amounts of piracy and used games. Well I dont want to see this happen but its going to happen eventually.
you are clearly retarded we pay 60$ a game already
the excruciatingly hard sub-boss before the final boss.
Stupid fanboy…. So that if I agree with Pachter that developers might charge their games because everygame they release ends up they losing money. Look I dont agree with pachter on everything but The game industry sales are sliding each month for the past 9 months. Were on the verge of a video game collapse and Nintendo might save the video game industry once again. Who knows.
duh its an economal crisis (probaly fake but still lol)
then people do more lending games or buying from seconhand retailers
hi there i just wont use internet feature
Okay, OKAY, PISS OFF PACHTER.
This guys a moron
Dumbest idea of 2012.
i wont use internet
So, what he’s saying is that he wants to kill off MP and the gaming industry by doing something stupid?
*Smh*

^This
I say that Pachter needs to shut his trap.
Oh god not this faggot again..
my reaction too
why do they even keep posting what this guy says?:S
Patcher…..
Nobady really cares about you.
Ok yeah.. If that happens then the industry loses my money for good.
…WHAT?… NO FUCK YOU PACHTER I AM NOT PAYING ANY SUM OF MONEY FOR MULTIPLAYER. I’M GLAD YOU’RE JUST AN ANALYST AND NOT A DEVELOPER. YOU SUCK.
LOL this guy is an idiot.
So you mean, on top of paying for internet services, and in the case of xbox users LIVE as well, you want us to pay even more to use online? Yeah, no thanks.
just the thought frustrates me because i know people would still pay for it
“it’s only a few extra dollars. what, are you poor or something?”
xbox live annoys me too. you already pay bills to have freaking online why would you need to pay again ugh
so xbox live doesnt get hacked…?
If you’re referring to what happened with the PS3, it’s because some idiot at Sony said their network was unbreachable and some group hacked it to prove them wrong. The same thing could have happened to LIVE or any other online service. You’re not paying for security, you’re paying to fill Microsoft’s wallet.
actually nintendo netwok hasent been hacked but i guess the wii and ds were ok nvm
Nintendo got hacked by the same group, actually.
Makes me wonder if this group is secretly supported by Microsoft to be honest. There are no things such as dirty hands in business.
Let’s incentive people to pay for online by hacking the competition, to give them the idea that the paid service is unhackable.
I wouldn’t be surprised… *shrugs*
Microsoft wouldn’t stoop that low. Anyway, the hacker’s been arrested.
well add $1 per week which makes about $55 per year and that’s excluding if more than one studio does that. now add xbox live to that and any other subscription service you’re paying for like hulu plus and netflix, it really adds up at the end of the day.
yeah that how he wants the industry to go, my opinion:
HELL NO i don’t want to pay for online, its the reason why i don’t have xbox 360. (money hungry bastards)
So let me get this straight, he want activision to:
1. charge $60 for a incomplete game
2. add expensive DLC
3. COD elite that also cost
4. charge for online (include xbox live)
does anyone see how much we have to pay JUST to play the DAMN game?
£15 dlc for THREE MAPS.
Plus internet connection
yeah fuck that just imagine if ALL developers do this … Hell no
Fuck me if I’ll pay for any online multiplayer. Anyway, this guys basically being paid to troll. Except he actually believes in his BS stories…
What the hell is wrong with this guy? Goddammit!!!!!
This guy needs to just leave…the universe.
This guy just needs to stop…existing.
Is Everything Patcher Says Complete Bullshit?
pretty much, yeah. -_-
No, not all of it. Most of it. And the rest is fucking common sense
yeah and the trolls believe him.
Pachter is right. Afterall he has this job unlike nintendo fanboy basement dwellers who ask their mummys for cookies and milk :p and think they know about the industry rofl
A good troll isn’t supposed to be so stupidly obvious that he’s trolling. Try again next time.
Seriously? Every single sane gamer in existance knows this would be a horrible idea. This is such an obvious troll, I’m laughing.
Have this guy been smoking Microsoft? That’s the main reason people got a PS3, even though they do tend to have problems with their online A LOT of I’ve heard. I still pay for online with my 360, the service is good but fuck that, Nintendo will innovate and have something more creative, I’m positive. When they get something new, they twist things and make ’em better! I have faith, Nintendo, let it be free!
i think its free
They said it would be free :)
Well some 3ds games have Nintendo network access… Never asked me for credit card, never said I needed to pay…. I believe NW is free… I dot know about wii u version though
Sure, if he wants to destroy the gaming industry.
Wow I have not herd anything from patcher in a while.
And this is why i will never get a xbox 360
because your too poor. i like having all 3 systems. My Wii has been collecting dust w/ it free online going to waste. My 360 & Ps3 are still going strong. & i dont mind paying the sixty bucks per year especially when i can just pay for it using XBL Gold cards every year once a year & I have my Ps3 for its great exclusives. Man im happy not to be a fanbtch aka fanboy.
Oh, good for you! everyone wish to be as affordable as you!
quit the bullshit exaggeration, brother. He’s right, Xbox had damage itself because of the extra costs you have to get in order to have a good online gaming experience. I don’t have anything against Xbox and I think is a good system, but I think Microsoft should think about people’s pockets.
If you don’t mind paying for the $60 bucks, I think you wouldn’t mind either to be charge for multiplayer and for an “online” game. let’s be clear in one thing: Nobody is rich and since we are having a hard ass economy right now, people are more cautious about their money. So don’t assume its alright because 99% of gamers will find this idea absolutely atrocious.
Go outside, leave your hometown, study a bit, then you may start to understand what this Bullshit means economy wise.
Take the Xbox system outside of gaming and you perhaps understand what is wrong with this.
In an economy more orientated to make you just a pawn for money flow, people like you are letting everything go as shit.
DId you know that money doesn’t food people, and that FOOD does, and the only thing stoping food from reaching to those who can’t get it are the 50 people you idolise on the top of the pyramid. And you only care about not looking POOR. YOU IGNORANT.
I am sorry to the rest, i got a bit carried away.
Michael Pachter needs to get punched in the testicles.
MICHAEL.
PACHTER.
IS.
NOT.
NEWS.
i tried to abbreviate that and i got pimpin even though its nowhere near
There’s a reason he’s known as an ‘analyst’.
‘Anal’yst
Is Pachter a stooge of EA?
No, stop.
Because if there’s one thing developers need to do, it’s charge consumers even more, that’s totally the answer
That sounds like the governments philosophy as well
patcher, why are you such a dumb ass? the only time i see for it to be fine to charge for multiplayer is when you have 64 or more players all in the same server for very long periods of time, so like an mmo pretty much. i see NO reason for people to have to pay monthly or weekly to play call of shitbag online.
Well, Michael Pachter is usually full of shit, so I wouldn’t trust his opinion on this.
Fucking seriously. This is the worst thing to ever come out of Patcher’s crap hole. I will never, EVER pay for multiplayer, even if it is $1 a week. I don’t even like multiplayer that much. This will get rid of so much business for publishers, any game that uses it will not succeed.
Another omen of Patshit.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Yeah right.
Pachter is not a Gamer.
…but he’s a ”gay”mer.
fucking idiot
Hold me back!
*Looks down at the leash in my hands that is tied to your waist*
Hold you back?
Fuck that!
RELEASE THE DOGS OF WAR!*removes the leash and runs like hell*
Because there aren’t enough costs with the game itself or online pass, paying to go online, buying DLC, and buying a “season pass”. No, you go ahead, charge a monthly fee on top of it. While you’re at it, put in ads so that millions of people will see them and then you’ll get an even larger sum of money.
#sarcasm
I understand with a lot of online services there’s a monthly charge… but with all of the fees attached to gaming online or just all of the stuff people buy for multiplayer games, charging a monthly fee is just ridiculous. I don’t think any other online service has as much attached to it as gaming (don’t hold me to that though). I think the smartest way to tackle it is with things like “Call of Duty Elite” and “season passes”. They get money up front that can be used to host their servers, and maybe keep some for themselves. It essentially is already a monthly fee, just in disguise.
Free multiplayer? YOU PAY £40 FOR THE FUCKING GAME!!!
And either, its got a shit tacked on story, but a good MP, or the other way round.
WHO THE FUCK PAYS THIS RETARD!?
This time around you shouldn’t blame Pachter for what he is saying. The thing is that the gaming industry has grown up, and (most of the) game publishers are not “friends of gamers” anymore, they are profit orientated companies. They want to make more money from a single game, so of course they will make more DLCs, more preorder exclusives, and more money wasting “premium” gaming services, year after year. So yeah, there is a fat chance that publishers and developers will charge for online multiplayer in the “next generation”.
Damn, we are facing a dark future of gaming right now…
and people wonder why everyone has been having more interest in small developers and indies recently =/ the industry hasn’t really grown up to me, they seem more like teenagers still wanting everything and expecting everything to be given to them for being lazy. the content we get in most of these games is less than many PS1 games which also doesn’t justify the $60 price tag for this generation. lets not also forget how they are purposely going bankrupt because many developers only want to make AAA games which costs millions of dollars almost on par with hollywood.
so yeah, to me these are their teenage years and they are too busy partying to care about their grades.
Pachter, just… just shut up.
There are two schools of thought in media these days- content either belongs to the consumer or to the producer. Nobody can reach a compromise, and we are all going to miss out because of it.
OH HEY IT’S PACHTER TIME TO RAGE AND OVERREACT BEFORE READING WHAT THE ARTICLE IS ABOUT!
The industry will DIE if it doesn’t figure out how to supplement game sales with additional income. Charging for multiplayer makes total sense: it costs publishers a pretty penny to have 24/7 servers running, and even more if they go dedicated. I’m sorry if you don’t like it, but it’s something that needs to be done. A subscription fee or a FTP model with optional DLC are good options that have proven their effectiveness in recent years.
To everyone hollering about how this will “destroy” the gaming industry:
You are fucking stupid.
Education yourself about the industry before spewing your vitriol and uninformed hoopla. Even if Pachter is wrong, he at least knows what he’s talking about. You don’t know patterns; he does. Nintendo isn’t his favorite. Get over it. Listen to reason. Read the facts. Or, at the very least, keep your posts to yourself.
I wasnt aware the total number of console sales this generation didnt reach over 400 million *rolls eyes* gaming is far from dead.
Gaming is “far from dead”?
[laughter]
Again, 400 million consoles sold. Gaming was still around when it wasnt so popular, everyones just getting their corporate knickers in a twist because of the economy. They need to sort it, and grow up, and stop trying to fix it without harming their own salaries.
And you’re just a moron.
400 million consoles sold when? Combining figures is meaningless. Anyone can do that and inspire some sort of “point” when they don’t actually have one.
And you’re calling me a moron? When I’ve fucking wrecked you enough in numerous arguments about stuff like this? Get out my sight you filthy twat.
How is combining figures meaningless? It shows EXACTLY how many consoles, be they home or portable were sold starting say, 2005, this gen. And i only counted ps3, 360, vita, DS, 3DS, and Wii.
Its alive and kicking, and will continue to do so as long as gamers exist
Yeah, because the global recession really dates back to 2005. Oh wait, it doesn’t.
Times have changed, gaming is going digital. The market is also declining in income too.
http://games.yahoo.com/blogs/plugged-in/ailing-video-game-industry-222612072.html
In fact this article is a great read.
And yetthe ps3, 360 and 3DS had its biggestyear this year and the last, and the 3DS is outselling the DSat this current moment in time. Clearly, the worldis a third worldcountry
Outselling the previous DS by an incremental amount can very well mean nothing in the long run.
Once again, I’d advise you to get your facts in order.
Oh please, you’ve never wrecked anyone. The majority of your posts are all hater non-logic that you pass of as facts, and on top of that you suck at trolling, the one thing you SHOULD be good at.
…..
I take that back.
You HAVE wrecked someone.
Go look in your mirror to discover who it was.
+1,256
Just because Vita is bombing HARD doesnt mean anything else is
but the Vita is the only console out right now!
right??
Sony’s status reflects on everyone’s!
Yeah….ifyoure stupid. I just bought my3DS and have about 8 games i wana buy. If i bought a Vita, id first of all have to wait till i have another £100spare, then buy a game as well, and thenuse it as a paper weight
don’t forget you need to get a ps memory card also need some money.
“Education yourself”
ancient meme
Though on second thought, perhaps it was more of an in-joke on a forum I frequented in 2004. Either way, you perfectly understood my meaning. Quit arguing semantics and detracting from the conversation.
and by charging a premium on top of current premiums from nickel & diming through locked on content and DLC it makes it harder to afford games making the market shrink. currently companies like EA and activision are the cause of the problems and not the solutions, just look at DRM and how it screws over honest people more than the pirates.
Activision and EA are two of the strongest video game companies whether or not you like their games and methods. You’ll notice a bunch of other companies hitting the wayside and closing shop. Guess what they weren’t doing? DLC, paid online service, FTP. Some might have attempted but either didn’t stick to their guns or had lackluster post launch content (see: THQ).
it’s nice to have a billion dollar dream doesn’t it? yet EA’s stocks keep falling and activision might get sold off and DLC and premiums won’t help them. they are unrepairable currently, due to their own business practices and how they treat their consumers, the weight is beginning to crush them. in the end the consumers matter. you could add premiums, on top of premiums, on top of premiums and guess what would happen? people are going to leave. i’m about to leave AT&T U-verse for a more affordable competitor because they keep jumping the price up every year, what makes you think others won’t leave for things like this as well when they get their bills.
the whole disconnect between developers and gamers is getting pretty bad. i realize the industry is growing up but i don’t see them as an adult, right now they look like the stereotypical varsity jacket wearing teenage jocks. they don’t know what they’re doing, they don’t care what they’re doing and they would rather give you swirlies and stuff you in a trashcan. also, teenagers love fire, explosions and spend hours on social media sites (gotta love social games right? zynga anyone?). real adults can actually acknowledge their problems and move forward in trying to fix them and showing levels of dignity and respect. i don’t even see any levels of dignity and respect given to their consumers, instead it’s all about the money, trying to keep themselves afloat over bad business decisions and short term plans. i have seen little to no long term plans this gen.
people are getting tired of games being held back and content cut just for day-1 DLC, it’s even the butt of jokes. people are and have been talking about the free-to-play model for awhile now and how long that will last because it won’t, a company needs money.
paid online services aren’t even doing well, because the servers are still closed off in about 6 months so they can make room for a new game to use those servers and even then, those end in about 6 months and the cycle continues, so, what good would charging mulyplayer be? just give 1-2 months more? it’s a short term plan too.
Hardly any company does day-1 DLC as a cash grab. It has to do with the development process. A game needs to be certified for selling, and there is often a months-long process involved. In the mean while, why not start on DLC, which doesn’t need certification before it sells?
Again, as I’ve said countless times, the point Pachter is making is that companies need to sort things out. See? You two actually agree and you’re still arguing about it.
He suggest charging for multiplayer, which is fine for local play but costs companies money to keep running online. 500,000 copies sold at $60 can only maintain a company’s bank account for so long before the well runs dry. DLC and paid services are necessary – not for every fucking game like you’re trying to say – but primarily for online games the continue to sap resources from the developers.
And since you brought up Zynga and social media users: they are a huge part of the market and gladly buy DLC and engage in microtransactions. It would be stupid and nonsensical for a publisher do not take advantage of that. These people are running a business, not catering to your every childish whim. They’re here to make money and I’m sure they hardly care if entitled people like yourself are offended that they’re making it with DLC.
this is hardly a childish whim nor entitlement. i understand and acknowledge they are making money from DLC, but what i do not like however, is how they go about it. i hardly feel there should have been an online pass for catwoman who is part of the main game in arkham city. paid services are not always necessary but this is what i see. i can give a pass to some games and their paid services, and how they can benefit from them, but some i cannot.
perception is everything, the reason some DLC sells so well is because many believe they are not getting the full content on release when a company can release day 1. so, they buy it to make it feel complete because they felt they were being ripped off, even if that isn’t the case but we are seeing the backlash. in other cases we have some like capcom making much of their content locked behind paywalls with no option to unlock the characters normally.
the whole thing on DLC and paid services is very delicate and each company has taken to different routes (some more extreme than others) just for a little bit more money. even pachter agreed locked on content and some forms of DLC is just plain greed.
i do agree the companies need to sort things out. i just have different views on how, and more services on top of the ones we already have, is not one of them. i have agreed with pachter before on some occasions, but this, i can can only find myself agreeing with that, they need to sort things out.
well, zynga is going the way of the dinosaur and i don’t know how long the social gaming bubble is going to last, i know it’s flourishing in asia but not so much in the rest of the world, unless you like angry birds?… yes, there is a market there i do agree, but it’s not taken seriously enough to make it work for some companies. it is great for indie development though, because there are some that actually take the medium seriously.
also on the whole used game sales thing, well, not everyone can afford everything new and i definitely don’t see PSN and XBLA actively competing with used games or actually using their premium services like PS+ to their advantage in sales. some games have been on those services for years and they are still sold too high compared to gamestop or amazon. if digital only is the future because discs are expensive, i expect to see some sales and price drops in these services and i barely see them as it is. there are many ways to get people to want your product and, premiums and DRM are not one of them.
Yes they are. If games weren’t selling at a certain price, Microsoft and Sony wouldn’t keep them priced there. Either way, there’s obviously room for improvement, which is all Pachter is saying.
Wow… I think this was probably the most stupid shit I’ve read today.
But the worst is that you’re talking down to others about “having to educate” themselves while you don’t even seem to know a tiny BIT about the background technology you ramble about.
This is probably a troll post. No! It HAS to be one.
Ah, I’m glad you skirted around the issue entirely. I’ll gladly elaborate on anything you ask me to, but first you need to (1) actually pick something for me to elaborate on and (2) at least attempt to come up with your own argument.
Your entire post was a waste of internet data. It neither resolved nor explained a thing. Remind me again who the one rambling is?
how can someone be wrong and still know what they’re talking about?
Yes, publishers arent always making the profits they want; some even lose big money on some games. But this isnt the answer.
There are games out there that people buy specifically for the multiplayer. Are they now expected to spend 60 bucks on a game for a 6 hour single player campaign and local only multiplayer? and then spend more for the online experience?
whats gonna happen is less people will buy these games because they wont want to pay for the online. Lets say online is $1 a month. For every person who decides to not buy the game for this reason, thats 60 dollars of revenue they lose per non returning customers. That means for every one they lose, they had better have at least 5 subscriptions to make up for those not making that initial $60 purchase; and thats to make up for losses of revenue off the initial purchase of the game. Doesnt include how much more money they need to make in order to get the profits they want. Thats all just for the status quo.
basically…that isnt the solution to that problem. I would probably start with lowering development costs by not always going for the complex super high end graphics. It takes time and resources to build uber photorealistic games, that can get expensive. More stylized looking games should help bring costs down. Not always striving for the best graphically will definitely help.
5 subscriptions for the duration of a year****
strongly agree with your last paragraph
You are missing the point entirely. You are trying to cure the symptoms, not the disease. The idea is to either come up with a creative way to get players to pay extra for more content even after a $60 plunge OR to change the current pricing model to get more people playing the game and, subsequently, purchasing DLC or multiplayer components.
To quote Pachter, “The solution is to figure out a way to charge for multiplayer.”
Point to me exactly where the $60 figure comes up in the article (it doesn’t). And while you’re at it, read the article. This website loves to create alarmist headlines and couple them with severely dissected quotes. I implore you comprehend the news story before trying to hold your own in a debate.
Okay, nintendonews. Just stop posting anything Pachter says. Please. For the love of everyone in this fanbase.
other sites do this as well.
True.
Yeah, we try not to post flame bait like this on our site. It’s a little unbecoming.
Enough of that doom and gloom, or console war, flame bait, ridiculous rumors, trolling, etc. on most gaming sites these days…. Tired of it. lol
Pacther is annoying, I mean honestly he has to be a gamer himself so why would he encourage charging for multiplayer?
personally i don’t believe for a second that this man ever
touched a game in his life and enjoyed it
i too would prefer a cease of anything pachter related on this site
The only thing this Pachter fella has ever played with is probably his Peter. Since I doubt he’s ever had pussy in his life. I think the 40 year old virgin was based on a true story. Pachter’s love life except in real life Pachter never got laid…..EVER!
Well it is expensive to run those servers, but this is not the way to solve that issue. Personally I don’t really care about paying for xbox live, but I still wish it were free. Something like this would be terrible, imagine if you had to pay weekly for each game, oh I pop in halo 3 well that’s 1 dollar a week, play halo reach, another dollar, play halo 4, another dollar. And what about people who play a TON of different multiplayer games. I’m sorry but this charging system will not work.
I think a year of online should be like 20-40$ just so they can make some extra money.
You do realize that’s $20-$40 per game right. If you have five games that you like playing year round on multiplayer that’s an extra $100-$200 a year, and that’s not even counting all the other expenses for the game.
You should understand a post before you make it sound stupid, it means a year of online for ALL games.
It’s reasonable, and it would help them provide us with a better online experience.
Thats called “Gold Xbox live” stupid
I love he basically just said, “we need to find a way to rip people off, without them knowing”
What a cunt.
Well, I did expect most of the comments to be like that, but he is telling the truth. Making a compelling multiplayer service is difficult when you think about the time and money it takes to keep it all up. If you look at games like LoL and MMOs, there’s a method of payment there which can make them a lot of money, enough to keep up their game while still making a profit.
A daily fee makes much more sense for online play though. If you’re not going to play online certain days of the week, then you shouldn’t have to pay for it anyways. Something like 5 cents per day could be a huge income if a game has a large playerbase, and it’s not too bad for consumers either.
multiplayer shouldn’t even be considered a premium service. remember when games that had multiplayer brought people together to have fun? this would ruin everything. i imagine if that does happen you could kiss local multiplayer/co-op goodbye because the companies would rather nickle and dime you for anything remotely fun about their games.
pachter is nowhere near right about any of this, this would actually lead to a decline. the problem will only grow and the market will shrink, if you make it harder and harder to afford games, ultimately no one is going to be able buy any at all. right now the game companies aren’t even fixing the cause, but the effect of the problem. and this? this is the stupidest trash pachter has spewed out to date.
Ugh, capitalism is evil.
call of duty will die in the butt. every game without a good single player will fail.
nintendo wouldn’t do it, they make a big deal about local multiplayer.
xbox owners already have to pay for their network, doubt they wanna pay 30 bucks a month.
Oh that Patcher!
You know i remember the days of gaming befor multi player and had just as much fun and enjoyed the games just as much iam not really sure if i would miss it or not does anybody feel the same
I wouldn’t mind if online multiplayer was lost too bad. I rarely play online.
This dude deserves a FALCON PUNCH to the face with a SUPER JUMP PUNCH from luigi into the balls with a PEACH BOMBER into his back then a ganondorf’s electrifying stomp onto his head and finish him off with a GREAT AETHER.
Complete utter bullshit to charge for somethin that’s been free for over a decade.
PK Starstorm too.
Hey Pater how about you go charge you vibrator and STFU!
What a fucking ridiculous idea. Seriously, I never thought one human being could be so much of a fucking arrogant retard.
Pachter needs a good old bitch slap, right across that fucking face of his.
Why do I not like this guy?? Oh, I know! Maybe it’s because of the dumb comments that he continuously makes. Some companies already charge you for playing multiplayer if you don’t buy their game new. I have no problem with companies making money, but when the consumer continuously gets the short end of the stick, that’s when I have a problem.
So, let me get this straight:Now we should start paying just to have fun with our friends?
SERIOUSLY?
That’s what Xbox Live does :p
Nintendo is going to save the Video game crash of 2013!M$ is going to be atari since they rape people wallet and ripping them off.Sony is just going to sink the Vitanic causing companies to go and only make it for different platforms. And of course apple will steal the costumers slickly.
And at the end….
apple makes igame a game system that has a touch screen controller and can crossplay between ipad/iphone/ipod and the app store will be the only source of getting games >:D then all of a sudden Redsnow 0.0.0.0.1 untethered jailbreak for iGame
Pay $10 to wake up in the morning.
No, i’m already sick of buying games pre owned when i’m a tad low on cash and later finding out they require an online pass *cough* AC Revelations *cough*. The Best games will always have free online because if it truly is a good game then it would great without MP.
Pachter still remains a piece of shit to this day.
*Agrees*
pretty much
This is why I have stuck with my PS3 and Nintendo’s stuff in general; never once have I been forced to pay to play with my friends, and I love my systems all the more for it.
The Wii U will likely be free, for the most part, as well, unless certain third party devs force payment for their third-party games’ online features.[Nintendo themselves have already confirmed that they can’t promise eternal “free online” for anything but their own offerings]
At least On-Disk-DLC isn’t a risk with Nintendo…..I hope that Sony also keeps that in mind.
WiiU online will be free, although theyre considering a PSN plus style membership, which would be BAWS
That, I could deal with.
A membership that gives you some extra stuff without being forced into using it to get the core of what you want.
As long as I don’t have to pay for the membership just to get online to play multiplayer, that would work fine.
Yeah. I mean i love PSPlus its a great service, so a Nintendo one would be even better. Even more so if it worked for the 3DS as well
thats why i love n64 no crappy online no sign in no achivements no hackers just u and the games and 4 player multiplayer
are you kidding me? are you FUCKING kidding me? really, pachter?
I am pretty sure that every single gamer will set this idea on fire and piss on it. I would never, ever want to pay for multiplayer, something that I have enjoyed for the past years of my childhood. You can’t expect to said something like that lf you are a Game Analyst, that’s just plain too greedy.
What the **** is wrong with those people?!??!?!?!?!??! Pay money to play with other people?????!!! Absurd! Lets keep it plain and simple: “Once Free, Always Free!”
I don’t get Xbox Live Gold due to the paying. Pachter wants to just watch the world burn.
Pachter….Just go away please….
That will ensure that I won’t be playing multiplayer, if it happens. I hate subscription-based gaming.
And yes we have a sense of entitlement: we bought the game already, why should we pay extra to play all of it?
NO!
IDIOT!!
what the FUCK, is Microsoft paying you to say that!?!?
just do what battlefield does…rent out servers. I would actually pay to rent a server for a couple days as long as i dont pay an arm and a leg
Just how the hell does he think multiplayer hurts the developers? If they make a game to have a multiplayer feature, and it works, then, they’re having PROFIT! I usually try to say something inteligent to counter Pachters’ comments, but this one is just… too… ARGH!!! I don’t even know what to say anymore…
ehhhhh. Developers need to make money, certainly. Servers cost money, we know that.
But instead of saying, “let’s charge more and more money all over the place.” Let’s encourage publishers and developers to come up with ways to make money that don’t screw over the consumer. People like Patcher needs to understand that some people out there listen to them, so they need to be more responsible with what they say.
Bing Bam Boop!!! Michael Pachter makes WAY too much money for his crappy predictions, because he obviously doesnt understand that most of the world is entering a recession and I dont know about other places but by next year the percentage of those unemployed in the U.S could/will reach about 8%. Instead of wasting money on “CoD” online, people will be buying raman noodles for dinner. People wont pay to individually play a game online. I guerentee it will promote sales LOSS for games like CoD and Halo. Bop Bam Boom!!!
microsoft does it thats why i dont xblg
4 words for Pinhead Pachter– SHUT THE HELL UP!!!!!!
No,No,No………..this by far is the dumbest thing I heard yet. Its bad enough certain games charge you to play online, as well as a certain company (MS) and then they also charge for DLC, expansion packs etc on top of paying your normal internet connection fee. Stop nickel and diming your customers. Its bad enough most games don’t even come with spilt screen multiplayer anymore….now he thinks we should pay to play for all multiplayer games. If it comes to this, I won’t play anything online as its not worth it at all.
Pachter is an elitist pig from Wall Street, who is out of touch with reality. If developers charge for multiplayer, it will kill video game consoles. Wall street and Warner Bros. killed the home console market once already when they took over Atari and screwed that up trying to sell crap without investing quality. Wall Street always wants to make money on quick investment, they are just cheaters who steal people’s money.
These industry analyst hate Nintendo because Nintendo makes quality products and that forces them to make better products.
I wish Nintendo was the only game company, honestly, Bill Gates just sticking with Windows.
Nintendo is truly the best gaming corp. their games are all unique, they like to be family friendly, I just always thought Nintendo is pretty much superior to every other company game system wise, they just didn’t do too well during the Wii.
I too prefer Nintendo over the others, but having only one company making consoles would be terrible! One thing should never have an entire monopoly on something. Other consoles have great different experiences and even though Nintendo often does have the most new ideas, with more consoles comes more new stuff.
Let Microsoft leave the console market so as we only have Nintendo, Sony and OUYA.
Ouya is never going to be successful. Its a shit console that can only play ANDROID games.
I can already do that on my ANDROID phone.
People that buy the ouya have git to be complete idiots
to be honest if they don’t won’t the cost of running online multi player options then don’t make them. personally i don’t play any game i have to have a monthly fee for in the end you pay as much as buying a PC in some cases even more of three years of playing.
but to get back to what i was saying they would find a lot less would be willing to pay for them half the games would still have the problem of costing more to run than what they would make charging. look dungeon and dragons online that sells game pack, items and subscriptions the does better than most online games but saying that it is a full world and like a few battle maps on a first person
Reblogged this on Gigable – Tech Blog.
This guy needs a punch in the face. and tk learn.the diffefence between opinion and fact. if i had to pay $1 a week just to have multiplayer, especially on games that are fighing style or racing, i wouldnt even bother.
I think it would work with free-to-play (which I don’t really go for) or if the games have really great and enthralling single player campaigns (which doesn’t often happen). Mostly, I don’t like being at the whims of the developers after I already bought their games. Leave me alone, and don’t make a whole bunch of multiplayer crap that doesn’t transfer to the next game.
I like his idea, as long as this idiot Patcher pays for every gamer’s multiplayer access. We already have a model for this in the MMORPG and it sucks. Either the game must be free, or playing it online must be free, don’t charge me twice for the same thing. <_< It's my game when I buy it, not the developer's anymore.
New headline: Pachter Found Dead of Apparent Sex Hate Crime Murder Suicide After Revealing Secret Love of Nintendo
Let them charge. It works for some (WoW) but it won’t for most. meanwhile Nintendo will keeping doing it for free and let the people migrate!
Sad thing is shit ea has already started doing this with their $10 “online pass” crap
