With more than 460,000 units sold in December, Wii U has now sold nearly 890,000 units in the United States after only 41 days on the market, according to the NPD Group. To date, Wii U hardware sales have generated more than $300 million in the U.S. alone; Wii hardware had generated just more than $270 million at the same point in its lifecycle.

Nintendo sold more than 2.65 million hardware units in the United States in the month of December. 2012 marked the 11th consecutive year that Nintendo has sold at least 8 million hardware units in the U.S. Other Nintendo sales milestones achieved in December 2012 and beyond that time frame, include:
Wii U:
- New Super Mario Bros. U has now sold more than 580,000 units, an attach rate of more than 65 percent.
Nintendo 3DS:
- Nintendo 3DS sold more than 1.25 million units in December and has crossed 7.7 million units sold life to date.
- New Super Mario Bros. 2 became the fourth Nintendo 3DS title to surpass 1 million units sold in the U.S., and has now sold more than 1.45 million units life to date.
- Nintendo 3DS continues to outpace the historic sales rate of Nintendo DS.
Wii:
- Wii sold nearly 475,000 units and crossed 40.8 million units sold life to date.
- Ubisoft’s Just Dance 3 became the 10th Wii title to sell more than 5 million units life to date.
Nintendo DS:
- Nintendo DS sold nearly 470,000 units and crossed 53 million units sold life to date.

A new console released through the holiday season with no stock shortages should have been able to muster more sales. The Xbox 360 managed to shift 1.4 million units and is widely expected to be replaced by a new console later this year. The Nintendo 3DS did really well though and I should have mentioned that in the title, but I was in a rush to get the press release out.

I was just about to post the same question…the “only” is pretty ridiculous. 1.4 million units would have been great if Nintendo were planning to replace that very same console later this year. Games are still being released for the (X Box) system and it’s cheap to buy…that’s a recipe for sales, but the real test will be when the new one comes out, because the new purchasers will not have incentive to buy it. The latest of adopters will not be excited dropping at least twice as much money next year for “an upgrade”. All these arm-chair analysts are funny with all of their prognosticating on the demise of Nintendo. There is no honor in trying to be the first negative minded person to be right about something.
I was wondering that same thing. The title made me think Nintendo was disappointed with the number of units sold. But when I read this, it was just the opposite of what I thought I was going to read.

Well the Wii U sold a little bit better than I thought. Whenever I go into a store a see a decent amount of both versions of the consoles available there. It has me worried that it didn’t sell well but it seems to be selling okay. Xbox is clearly the winner of the holiday season and I hope that Nintendo will catch it’s stride with games it will be releasing this year. Can’t wait until E3.
Bottom line? Nintendo is making $$$
The Wii is still selling strong despite the fact that Nintendo and the 3rd Party Publishers have abandoned the Wii. It never ceases to amaze me that talented people don’t want to make games for the Wii. The Wii owners are begging for games. The Wii U sold well. The DS also sold very well. I think parents with younger children are concerned 3D may be bad for their eyes. But the 3DS is the biggest winner, outselling everthing but the Xbox 360, and the Xbox360 barely beat the 3DS. Long live Wii, DS, WiiU and 3DS. I hope they do more cross platform play with Wii U and 3DS.
