NPD: Wii U Only Sells 460,000 Units In December, Plus Other NPD Figures

wii-u-blue

With more than 460,000 units sold in December, Wii U has now sold nearly 890,000 units in the United States after only 41 days on the market, according to the NPD Group. To date, Wii U hardware sales have generated more than $300 million in the U.S. alone; Wii hardware had generated just more than $270 million at the same point in its lifecycle.

“While the Wii launch established new benchmarks in the United States, Wii U has surpassed its predecessor in perhaps the most important category: revenue generation. The demand for the Deluxe SKU, which was essentially sold out at retail this holiday, and the strong attach rate of New Super Mario Bros. U, shows that we have the value and the games to drive momentum in 2013. We look forward to offering great new experiences and bringing smiles to millions of new faces throughout the year.”

– Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing.

Nintendo sold more than 2.65 million hardware units in the United States in the month of December. 2012 marked the 11th consecutive year that Nintendo has sold at least 8 million hardware units in the U.S. Other Nintendo sales milestones achieved in December 2012 and beyond that time frame, include:

Wii U:

  • New Super Mario Bros. U has now sold more than 580,000 units, an attach rate of more than 65 percent.

Nintendo 3DS:

  • Nintendo 3DS sold more than 1.25 million units in December and has crossed 7.7 million units sold life to date.
  • New Super Mario Bros. 2 became the fourth Nintendo 3DS title to surpass 1 million units sold in the U.S., and has now sold more than 1.45 million units life to date.
  • Nintendo 3DS continues to outpace the historic sales rate of Nintendo DS.

Wii:

  • Wii sold nearly 475,000 units and crossed 40.8 million units sold life to date.
  • Ubisoft’s Just Dance 3 became the 10th Wii title to sell more than 5 million units life to date.

Nintendo DS:

  • Nintendo DS sold nearly 470,000 units and crossed 53 million units sold life to date.

      1. @RobsonJr.
You don’t even bother me. Because I know you’re just a pathetic idiot who talks crap to EVERYONE and loves putting Nintendo down. It must give you boners or something, so you can’t stop doing it. Well, just to let you know, nobody cares about what you have to say.

      2. People seemed to think Xbox is for mature audience, but proof is that Bob here never grew up. Did you get bored of your games already Bobby?

        1. Jackoff Jr. … You’re the mother of all fails. You’re in denial, insensitive, clueless, getting Sony’s dick in your sore ass, and needs medical attention. You’re losing the battle because you fucking failed at comebacks. A Nintendo hater doesn’t belong here except IGN and NeoGAF. I hope Sickr bans your bleeding ass.

              1. Nah :P price cut coming to both console and memory card soon, plus a pretty nice looking line up of games, Finally we may see it do well :)

      1. im a nintendo fanboy, dont get me wrong, but xbox sold twice more than the wii u over the holidays. just trying to be fair.

    1. You really don’t have anything better to do with your time, if you hate Nintendo so much why even come onto this website? You must be a shut in who has no communication to other people besides through a game console or through the Internet and this is your way keeping yourself from feeling lonely.

    1. Are you kidding? The Wii U sales are definitely not “dominating” the video game industry. Stupid, misinformed Nintendork!

      1. Actually the numbers have surpassed the wii during its first month, which outsold both xbox and ps3. That is pretty good for Nintendo, though I still like xbox and ps3.

      2. I know you love anal and giving heads to Sony. It’s no wonder Rhode’s dick is already in your ass! U mad because the Wii U IS dominating in sales and have sold a total of 2.2 million units worldwide… most of them sold in the United States and Canada.

        1. Actually it’s 2.65 million units sold and that’s very good for a console that’s only been out for nearly 3 months

      3. @RobsonJr.
I think you’re really a big fan of Nintendo. And for some reason that embarrasses you, so you put Nintendo down to make yourself feel better. Is it working?

      1. A new console released through the holiday season with no stock shortages should have been able to muster more sales. The Xbox 360 managed to shift 1.4 million units and is widely expected to be replaced by a new console later this year. The Nintendo 3DS did really well though and I should have mentioned that in the title, but I was in a rush to get the press release out.

              1. He had several essays whinging and complaining about the word “only” in the title and how it shouldn’t be there. Kind of sad really.

                    1. I have aye, they were suppose to be replies, but I have no idea what’s going on with the reply buttons lol.

                        1. Lol @ nintedward ( if this reply doesn’t fo where it should) also I’m happy the wiiiu and Mario sold well but I hope the third parties also did well since we need their support.

                          1. Indeed we do. Things will get better bro :) As the installed base grows , so will the support.

              2. but then again the xbox 360 is cheaper by a large margin and much more established software wise than the wii u
also from what i heard the deluxe model did have stock shortages in some places or is that incorrect?
anyway i don’t think sales of the 2 systems should be directly compared

a comparison with the launch of the xbox 360 might be more adequate

                1. Well said Kehool. It would only be fair to Compare the sales of the wiiu in the holiday season of 2018 to when it is at the same stage as 360 is…

              3. Have some historical figures…

                First two months by NPD:

                Wii U – 890k
                Xbox 360 – 607k
                PS3 – 687k
                Wii – 1080k

                And then the strangest one…

                Gamecube – 1230k

          1. I was just about to post the same question…the “only” is pretty ridiculous. 1.4 million units would have been great if Nintendo were planning to replace that very same console later this year. Games are still being released for the (X Box) system and it’s cheap to buy…that’s a recipe for sales, but the real test will be when the new one comes out, because the new purchasers will not have incentive to buy it. The latest of adopters will not be excited dropping at least twice as much money next year for “an upgrade”. All these arm-chair analysts are funny with all of their prognosticating on the demise of Nintendo. There is no honor in trying to be the first negative minded person to be right about something.

          2. I was wondering that same thing. The title made me think Nintendo was disappointed with the number of units sold. But when I read this, it was just the opposite of what I thought I was going to read.

                1. I think Sickr banned him. Good, if someone gets that upset over one word, they really shouldn’t be even on the internet, they’d get torn to shreds.

                    1. You banned someone just for that? When there’s several people like RobsonJr. etc. who deserve it SO much more?

                          1. Well if I was running a website, I would ban everyone who talked CRAP. I have a zero tolerance for that stuff. I put up with too much of that in the past. I like to see people pay for being asses.

                      1. Hey sickr are you ever going to add me on miiverse? It still says request pending and I know that you probably don’t have a lot of time to play games with the site and all but I would really appreciate it if you add me. Thanks!

          1. Smiling has always been a standard feature for us nintendo fans. In fact pure joy. From the eighties nintendo has had haters, so you new nintendo gamers smile; the envious trolls will need preparation H, like their fathers, grandfathers and uncles before them. Butt hurt trolls have existed since Atari crashed the industry in 1983 lol. Sales mean more third party games, watch this space :).

          2. Well the Wii U sold a little bit better than I thought. Whenever I go into a store a see a decent amount of both versions of the consoles available there. It has me worried that it didn’t sell well but it seems to be selling okay. Xbox is clearly the winner of the holiday season and I hope that Nintendo will catch it’s stride with games it will be releasing this year. Can’t wait until E3.

          3. The Wii is still selling strong despite the fact that Nintendo and the 3rd Party Publishers have abandoned the Wii. It never ceases to amaze me that talented people don’t want to make games for the Wii. The Wii owners are begging for games. The Wii U sold well. The DS also sold very well. I think parents with younger children are concerned 3D may be bad for their eyes. But the 3DS is the biggest winner, outselling everthing but the Xbox 360, and the Xbox360 barely beat the 3DS. Long live Wii, DS, WiiU and 3DS. I hope they do more cross platform play with Wii U and 3DS.

          4. That’s awesome news. The Wii U launch was very successful and the older generations of Nintendo hardware are still selling well. It’s all around good news for Nintendo. Leave luck to heaven.
