Nintendo has, once again, stated that consumers can only experience its franchises on its systems. In an interview with GamesBeat, Scott Moffitt, executive vice president of sales and marketing at Nintendo of America, said, “‘Content is king’ has never been more true. The only way to experience our franchises is going to be on the Wii U.”
Moffitt also said that while Sony and Microsoft may compete to attract core gamers toward their platforms, Nintendo aims to grab everyone’s attention, including avid gamers, children, adults and families. “While Microsoft and Sony may compete for the hearts and minds of core gamers, our fans will appreciate the breadth of content that we’ve got, which has universal appeal,” explained Moffitt.
“Innovation is what Nintendo stands for,” added Moffit. “We’re proving that with a fresh new, re-imagined array of games we’re bringing to market this year.”
Nintendo is unique. No doubt about that.

Well the console is still pretty new. Hopefully we’ll see those games this gen. The best way to assure they keep coming is for all who say they want those titles to actually buy them when they get released.
Also Wii U is the only console to get proper backwards compatability so you could play those IP’s in some form on Wii U today via a Wii disc or through Wii VC.

I stopped playimg my Wii after Nintendo unveiled the Wii U. After that I played it for DKR, and Skyword Soward. However, I stopped playing Wii Sports after 3.5 Months. I purchased my Wii in 2006 btw. So i still play Galaxy 2 and Smash bros on my Wii U btw. I also still play DKR on my Wii U console.

Mario 3D World, yes is very similar to 3D Land. Although it’s in the same idea as saying Galaxy 2 is a rehash of the original Galaxy.

They showed nothing that appealed to me at E3. I liked the old Nintendo that had 2nd party developers who made games for the people who aren’t interested in all these Mario, Pokemon and whatnot games. They had Rare (Goldeneye, Perfect Dark,Conker, etc), Silicon Knights (Eternal Darkness), a good relationship with Factor 5 (the Rogue Squadron games). Now all they do is make games that don’t appeal to me. The only studio (Retro) that I hoped was going to bring a game that appealed to me are working on a Donkey Kong game, why couldn’t they put some other studio to work on that and leave Retro to work on Metroid or some new IP.
I’m not saying stop making these Mario and whatnot games, but also make some games for the ones of us who aren’t interested in Mario games.
And what innovation are they talking about? Of all those games they showed at E3 absolutely none use the gamepad in a unique way. Why make the Wii U with a gamepad if you aren’t going to use it? I thought the whole idea of the Wii U and it’s gamepad was the ability to play games in a new unique different way. All the games they showed could be played on any console.

I must be part of a minority. But I had PS2 , Gamecube and Xbox that gen and the PS2 was my least favorite.
I used it for PES , Streetfighter (capcom vs SNK) and a few other bits and pieces and that’s it. I was much more focused on the 4 player capabilities of games like Smash bros , Mario Kart and Halo…
Also , my favorite games of that Gen were mostly on Gamecube!

Nintendo games are more innovative than Sony. How? The only think DKR and NSMBU have in common are the 2D affects. Yet when playing Donkey Kong, it does not feel like a 2D Mario Game. Nintendo is good at differentiating alll their ips to make it feel like one exclusive is different from another. Pikmin does not feel like Starfox.

I agree with this sentiment in terms of the games that they make: if you’re looking for first-party software exclusives, Nintendo is and has always been the god-emperor of that domain. Even during the NES days, Sega, Atari and NEC were falling all over themselves trying to create a Mario-Killer, but the plumber cannot be denied.
In terms of HARDWARE, though? I would say that the Wii U is actually way more ‘hardcore’ in scope than the Xbox One, at least.
Wii U has lots of exciting features that can open up gaming in new ways– assuming anyone actually thinks to use them, which is up to the third parties. But they’re all dedicated to gaming above all, and being able to use them for Netflix and so on are nice little bonuses. Whereas the Xbox One is kind of the opposite; it’s a set-top box like your TiVo or AppleTV which seems essentially geared to enhancing your TV and sports-watching experience, and as a bonus it can also run many of the same games you can get on Playstation 4. Sure, it has some legal mumbo-jumbo about not owning the games you buy, but so what? The games are for the kids, I just want the virtual water cooler!
They say that Nintendo “stepped down” last generation by purposefully making the less-powerful console. This gen, Nintendo’s back in the game with a super-dedicated gaming platform– but Microsoft has stepped down and just wants to sell you a new household appliance with some gaming options. Video games are bigger business than ever, but gamers are still hugely outnumbered by TV-watchers… and MS has alienated core gamers so much, it’s hard to imagine them going for any audience BUT the casual gamer anymore.

Playstation 4 will be in same boat as the wii u will not have a crap ton of games in first year most people will still their 360 or ps3 because most of the ps4 games will be available on ps3 so it will have ports, FFXV and kindom hearts are not coming til early 2016 or late 2015. Sony and mirosoft both have online fees, block backwards compatibility, Most of xbox one launch titles suck ass and theres already a list of why not to get a xbone, I will get a ps4 but not for a while, we have info launch titles for the ps4, Kill zone and infamous doesn’t appeal to everyone, sony and mirosoft have not at this time appealed to the japanesse market yet (pretty sure xbone will not launch there anyway). Nintendo will do well but they do need to drop the white wii u and cut the price of the black model by 50 and everything will be good.

I had a total of 3 Ps3 And traded them all in.all for diff reasons,money,lasting impressions Im leaving on my kids with fps’..the last one I traded for my wiiu. I honestly use my wiiu more than any other console Ive ever owned. I love being able to browse the internet on it. I do that the majority of the time. Being able to play games on the VC rocks ,or mario wiiu or whatever for short bursts. The gamepad is no gimick its innovative as hell . and yes dk country with its difficulty level is for the hardcore only..nintendo rocks and In proud to turn my little guy into a gamer with nintendo at the helm

They really did show something for everyone. They covered the genres almost perfectly (no Metroid) and showed games that were exciting… while highlighting innovation. None of the Wii U games play exactly as their predecessors, not one.

This is very true. “Kiddy” games are the lowest in the maturity state and “hardcore” games are the highest. Games like Mario or Kirby can appeal to everyone when games like God of War can only appeal to older people since they have blood and gore and such other things. Let’s just say that you wanted to have fun with your 8yr old son. You like games like Uncharted or God of War and you also like games like Mario or Kirby. Would you play God of War with your son? No of course not! It’s way too violent for him! But would you play NSMBU with him? Of course! Because it’s not violent and both your son and yourself like these games and can have fun with them!
However you made a mistake in terms of what “appeals” to people. Even though a young child has no business even watching God Of War being played, if he sees it then it WILL appeal to him.. He doesn’t even know whats going on. He just know it looks cool because the big kids are playing it and because he knows he’s not supposed to be seeing it.
He would probably have more fun playing Mario or Kirby mind you, but kids have always been attracted to things that are beyond their realm of understanding.
I think that it’s easy to attract younger kids to mature games than it is to attract adults to kiddie games. Nintendo in a lot of their games has a good balance of both. A series like StarFox is a lot like Star Wars. It is a serious story, but still PG enough that kids can watch it without parents being freaked-out necessarily. However with a series like Bayonetta, I’m 35 years old and I don’t know if I should be looking at that!
One thing about Nintendo franchises is that they transcend age groups. Largely due to the fact that the content and replay value of Nintendo franchises is so deep that when children grow up they find themselves still attracted to those series and playing them. Even if they have a more mature-rated library of games, they have that Mario, Kirby, or Poke’mon on stand-by somewhere.
You are correct. Your statement explains why COD appeals to a lot of of kids. Kids want to do what the big kids do. It’s always been that way.

Well Nintendo, I Will not mind if you start making games like a good RPG a la Chrono Trigger for console or a FPS tan compete with Halo, CoD and Battlefield or a god sand box to put GTA in a good run for their money.

Absolutely true. It’s always been main console and Nintendo for me as it has for many others because they’ve found their niche in casual gaming, and they’re really good at it (though they need to work on console support)

You’re denying and ignoring the fact that the Wii U is not only for core gamers… but for everyone. Look at this Tuesday’s Nintendo Direct @E3 2013. And The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD is one of the legendary game that everyone loves… but with new details, items, and gameplay. Deal with it and accept it, doc.
Everyone did not like the SNES. I did not like all of the SNES gamess. Nintendo does not need a cool title. Nintendo (believe it or not) is the same company since they started making games (not consoles but games). People have this image that they changed but have the same values as when they started.
The only thing worse than the arguments presented in these comments was the grammar accompanying most of them.
It’s fine to feel that the Wii U isn’t the console for you as an individual, and that’s the same for PS4, Xbox One, and even PC sometimes. There are more exclusives I personally will play on Nintendo consoles than the others.
It seems to me these arguments are revolving around the E3 presentations. In that case, was it wrong for Nintendo to target a different audience than the competitors? What if Nintendo is saving all of their big “core” games for just before or after the other two consoles have been released?
