Ubisoft Isn’t Interested In Making Games That Aren’t Franchises

watch_dogs_banner

Ubisoft’s senior vice president of sales and marketing Tony Key says that the company just isn’t interested in creating games that can’t be turned into major franchises. Key says that they don’t even begin to develop a game unless they think it can turn into a major series. The reason behind this decision is that game development is too expensive and risky to create a game that will be a commercial failure. All of the company’s games moving forward will be part of a franchise, rather than a standalone experience.

“Absolutely. That’s what all our games are about; we won’t even start if we don’t think we can build a franchise out of it. There’s no more fire and forget – it’s too expensive.”

“We feel like we’re in a really good place with Watch Dogs, but until we’re the biggest game of the year we’re not going to be satisfied.

“Last year we cleaned up at E3 because we were pretty much the only next-gen game around. Watch Dogs for us is really a franchise because we’re tapping into something people really care about, never more than when the NSA PRISM scandal broke.”

      1. You forgot about Watch_Dogs 2: Brotherhood and Watch_Dogs 2: Revelations. Also a PSVita spin off called Watch_Dogs 3: Liberation which will actually be the better version of the 3rd game along with a crappy 3DS version made by some homeless man they found that made the PSP version of Assassin’s Creed.

Also, ZombiU 2 confirmed, they did say they are not interested in non franchise games so really they pretty much back themselves into a corner with the ZombiU sequel ;) So expect that to come out in early 2015/late 2016

        1. They’ve specifically stated they’re not doing another Zombie U. In fact, that game was probably what made them decide not to do something like it again.

        1. you think that watch dogs is shovelware…….. stop making nintendo fans look fucking stupud and to the person above you how isnt this nintnedo news!!!!! just because mario isnt in it doesnt mean that it isnt related to nintnedo. (facepalm) this game isnt going to sell on wii u is it…….. because ubisoft and watchdogs and such isnt news to nintendo.

  1. Main problem with games these days.

People are too focused on making huge profit, and something that’ll have mass appeal and too focused on making games to follow it, that all originality, potential and chance to make something unique that delivers something special is just gone, everyone is doing it, even Nintendo.

A game like The Last of Us, even though it got very high reviews, it didnt deserve them, and overall was essentially a case of “what if Resident Evil 4 was more casual?”
It’s over simplified, and too generic too REALLY stand out on its own, because it’s focused too much on establishing a series, and having something people will buy until they get sick of it, or Sony stop making money, that they miss out on making something really original that does it’s own thing, and the games ending just feels like “we really wanted just one game, here’s our one off game’s ending, but unfortunately, we’re gona make more”.

So many games suffer from this, in order to fit “mass appeal” and “get dat money”, it’s sad :/

      1. It deserved 8’s.

The story is full of dumb plot lines, not going to mention them in full to avoid spoilers, but Joel having a grudge on the Fireflies contradicts his past, he’s the type of guy who’d make the Fireflies, the whole “they took our guns, but you have them, and even though their ours we’ll do you a favour we don’t want to do, but will do anyway” was stupid, and just there to set up Joel being reluctant to looking after Ellie, and the whole “deal” Ellie and her thing about her is just out of generic story telling 101, i knew what would happen to Tess the second i saw her.

stealth is equal to Beyond Good and Evil, it’s too simple and boring, and reuses the same animation over and over, the enemy AI is fine, but the ally AI is just fucking stupid, it completely breaks any immersion i had in the game, when Ellie is just hanging out and running around amongst the enemies. Other dumb stuff like trying to go for realism by having Joel carry limited ammo, using rags and alcohol for supplies, yet taking 500 pills to upgrade weapon sway and other inhuman abilities. And just over used to hell progression systems. The whole game is just stealth/combat, ladder/plank/raft, it’s so over done, it’s dumb.
It’s an over simplified game, with big flaws.

        1. It deserved at least a 9 or 9.5, it was amazing, but not perfect, honestly the only game this gen that deserves a perfect is mgs4

          1. Exactly, opinion.

It’s also my opinion that most reviews were scared of being objective and pointing out flaws but the hype and love for the Playstation brand at that point was incredibly high.

            It released
at a time of very high yet understandable bias.

  2. So the next time someone complains about Nintendo “rehashing” the same titles, just remember, other companies are doing it too. Why? To much money to develop new titles and potentially take a significant loss if it doesn’t sell well!

  3. So, milk the franchises, until they’re dry, and leave a bad taste in your mouth…. FU Ubisoft.
Good game, even when deserving a sequel, doesn’t necessarily need one.

  4. Psst, Ubisoft! Listen please, or read this, however you decipher the English language.

As a gamer, I really enjoy seeing new additions to Assassins Creed, hell I LOVE those games, I really do, pinky promise.

But, there’s ((-_n.o.t.h.i.n.g_-)) I like more, than seeing NEW IP’s, NEW games, not every game you make has to become this circlejerk of cash. Stop fucking setting your standards to Call of Duty, on how much cash you rake in. Make NEW fucking games every now and then, “make a good television show without the shitty toy line.” I miss when games used to come out, all kinds of new games Parasite Eve, Legend of Dragoon, Chrono Cross ect…

NONE OF THE GREAT GAMES THAT EXIST TODAY WOULD, IF MONEY HUNGRY BIPOLAR TWITS LIKE YOU SLUDGED OUT SEQUELS AND PREQUELS EVERY 6 MONTHS.

That’s the fucking reality of it – my pal Adam Orth says #dealwithit

    AND MAKE NEW IP’s DAMMIT!

And don’t create new IP’s for the soul purpose of reeling us in, and selling us more sequels to it’s franchise. Mix it up, create franchises, stand alone games, online only games. Just don’t go pandering to what makes you the most fucking money, I mean money is great, but a game company is just a SERVICE at this point, when they ONLY create games because they know it’ll be the easiest way to make money. AGAIN making money IS your job, I just prefer game companies to create GOOD games, that I like, as opposed to going ahead and saying they only want to make franchises.

    P..P…P….PENIS BREAKER!! 8iiiiiii X iii3~ ~~

    1. Yes, but if this is their current way of thinking, then BG&E must be low priority.
I bet Ancel has to fight hard to get more $$$. Damn this sucks.

  6. I never understood why companies do this. Instead of focusing on a franchise until the point you’re only known for that, why not improve your credibility to the point that all a consumer needs to see is your logo on the box to know that it will be a good game, regardless of genre?

  7. thenintendoreviewer

Why Zombi U then? It even has the potential to be a franchise if you make the right improvements.

    1. it didn’t sell well enough, they over estimated wii u sales, and got burned. If it had sold well I guarantee they would be trying to make it the next resident evil

      1. Watch Shokio’s video on Youtube. He exposes Ubisoft as liars. Ubisoft said earlier they were pleased with sales. Then they say they made no profit. ZombiU was a LOW BUDGET GAME Ubisoft admitted to that before ZombiU came out. It cost them about $500,000 to make. So lets see here. Only 8,334 copies would need to have been sold in order to make a profit. ($60 a copy times that by 8,334 = $500,040. That doesn’t even include digital sales) Even if say Ubisoft only made a 50% margin from a $60 game that’s still $250,020 for 8,334 copies. Half of their money back. So double that, 16,668 copies of ZombiU would make $50,040.

Im pretty sure ZombiU sold more then 16K.

In fact VGCharts says as of June ZombiU sold 0.47 million. Which is 470,000.

So if Ubisoft makes 100% of the profits from their $60 games:

        470,000 X $60 = $28,200,000……wow that seems off…but it isn’t…

Lets say Ubisoft makes 50% of the sales from ZombiU:

470,000 X $30 = $14,100,000…Still seems crazy. But there is simply no way ZombiU didn’t make a profit.

Even if ZombiU had a $1 million budget…it made back 14 times that lol.

        Ubisoft is just greedy.

I don’t even know if all that crap I typed up is legit but I think the math works out that way lol.

        1. this is actually true…. and for a game that could become something great….. they could make zombie u 2 like they did with red steel 2, turn something shitty with good ideas to something great.

  8. well they do new games, they just want to make a franchise of every game they make. It’s not a bad policy, good game comes out sells well, the gets a sequeal or 2. Okay so they would franchise it a bit more, but at the same time, at least they try to make sure that the games sell well enough so that they DO get a sequeal, because some games are actually better off as a franchise rather then just one and done.

  9. So why aren’t sonydrones like ness who complained about Mario and Zelda rehashes and isn’t putting that same amount of energy at Ubisoft? So Ness must be ok with Ubisoft rehashing since it’s not Nintendo.

  10. So about 36 commets about Ubisoft continuing to make rehashes huh? If you removed every single “Ubisoft” word in this article and replaced it with “Nintendo” it would be over 500 commets by now.

  11. Translation: We’re only interested in making crappy “mainstream” FPS games that will only change slightly each year, and will make us a ton of money in DLC. But to be fair, Ubisoft made Far Cry 3, and that game was excellent.

  12. Well i hope they bring ZombiU2 then. But honestly i dont know what to think about this dev. They have done mostly fantastic work with Rayman and Splinter cell games but then have these overrated games like AC that endup to be released every year and milked to the death. Watch Dogs looks promising but i dont like if it becomes another AC.

  13. Gentlemen, we are seeing the major decline of triple A games as we know it, guess we will allhave to jump on the indy bandwagon

  14. Good thing Hollywood doesn’t operate like this although they’re on the verge of it. Why in the world does everything have to be a franchise these days?

  15. Some of you guys are stupid. Series doesn’t always mean yearly rehashes, (e.g. COD) it can mean just 2-3 games from the series, and that’s it.
