Iwata Says “I Think The Public View Of Nintendo Will Be Changed”

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata firmly believes that if Nintendo can shift enough Wii U units in the future then the public’s current perception of the company will change. Iwata has admitted that it has been challenging showing consumers then benefits of Wii U and that Nintendo Land hasn’t been the showcase game they initially thought it would have been. However, Iwata thinks that the upcoming software for Wii U will change things for the Kyoto based company.

“Yes, exactly, just as you said. In the case of the Wii, for example, just by bundling Wii Sports, it was easily conveyed to the consumers that the Wii was a very unique and different system. But in the case of the Wii U, we have not come to that stage yet. We hoped that Nintendo Land would have been able to execute that kind of responsibility, but for those people who have only seen how other people are playing with the Wii U and Nintendo Land, they could not know how uniquely different the Wii U is from the Wii. As a result, Wii U is a machine for which the evaluation differs greatly depending on whether you own it at home or not. So, what we really need to do now is to launch software titles for the Wii U that can take advantage of its unique aspects, one after the other. So much so that a great number of people are able to touch the Wii U and feel how unique it is. We need to expand the number of such people. And once the number of people has reached critical mass, I think the public view of Nintendo will be changed.”

    1. Well to reply in a tone like your comment, Nintendo basically was saying that “We’re about to get our sh*t together”

  1. Pikachu Pika Pi Pikachu ⚡
(I’m sure people will change. It happens with all their systems now ⚡ )

    1. All they need to do is give out games to be honest. It’s sorta like the case of the 3ds were the 3ds is weaker than the Vita but it sells well because of GAMES. Once Wii U starts doing that, it will catch up. But it’s still at the moment struggling by just a bit.

      1. Pikachu Pika Pi Pika ⚡
(That’s true as soon as the games get released it will do well especially seeing how good pikmin 3 did in Japan ⚡ )

      1. Well atleast its not as bad as Microsoft who basically ruined their customer view of them in One go… you see what I did there?

  2. give us decent games and not an abundance of shovelware then others might, cause thats pretty much why Wii was Sterotyped to what it was, cause of all the shovelware

  3. Nintendo were under-prepared and too reliant on already sold ports…. that’s why Wiiu is struggling , it has immense potential and it will be realized from now on starting with Pikmin 3.

    1. My concern, is the great titles to come will be so far apart, WiiU won’t gain proper momentum. Everything is released SO long after launch, WiiU is now an afterthought. However, if Pikmin is truly awesome (as the first two were) and it continues to sell even after the initial wave of WiiU starved owners purchase it initially (and doesn’t just have a boom, followed by a drop-off), then there may be hope yet!!

  4. Personally, I’d say that the public view of Nintendo is pretty positive. Not everyone is a huge fan of the Wii U, but the 3DS has gained immense popularity and many call it the greatest portable console of all time. Not to mention that people still enjoy Pokemon and Mario a lot. (Among many other Nintendo titles) I know what he’s trying to say, but the Wii U fans will come around as well. Pikmin has already doubled the Wii U sales from last month after all and Super Smash isn’t even out yet!

  5. I’d say I have a positive view of Nintendo to be honest, Sony is may favourite company but without Nintendo, I wouldn’t have been able to get the PlayStation :)

Some people just hate Nintendo because of their systems when really you can see that Nintendo are trying their hardest to get their shit together and make their systems sale.

  6. They should have released Wii Fit U on day one. Then we wouldn’t have this problem with the casual crowd not knowing what the system is about.

      1. I agree with both statements.
also, I understand WHY Nintendo called it “WiiU,” but I thought it was a terrible business decision.
To consumers, calling it WiiU = “Nintendo’s second, underpowered, casual, no 3rd party dev machine.”

Instead of the greedy (and stupid) idea of piggy backing off the Wii, they really needed to differentiate it from the Wii. The Wii’s sales were good, but it had a terrible reputation… Nintendo’s next-Gen system is suffering from being affiliated with the Wii. (In addition to not having many new, 1st party exclusives.)

  7. I’ve started to not give a shit if the Wii U turns around or not. Just give me some good games and i’ll be happy.

        1. I was referring to 3D Mario, Smash Bros. and Mario kart. I know 3D mario is december but its still in the end of this year.

      1. I bought the system at launch, and have been patient for over half a year.
With all due respect, Fuck being patient. We’ve BEEN fucking patient.

        1. Chill man, I got it day one as well, i know how you feel. There is plenty of good games on it right now, with hella more on the way. Remember the 3DS?

          1. Oh, I remember the 3DS VIVIDLY. I got fucked over then also. Thanks for bringing back that fond memory. At least they gave me ambassador status and some awesome retro games.
            ..

            1. You act like You only play on Nintendo, if theres no current games coming to it, then play your Playstation :) problem solved.

    1. I assume they thought Wii U was gonna sell just because it had the “Wii” name in it. They also thought all the casuals that bought a Wii were gonna buy there system. Nope, most moved to tablet and Smartphones.

    1. I wouldn’t say he is being delusional concerning the article, Iwata acknowledges the few sales the Wii U has and he believes that the sales will pick up as more games are released. I think that more games will increase with more sales (as long as they are advertised a lot and well) just like the 3DS had, Wii U sales had a big jump in Japan with Pikmin 3 so hopefully the same happens in other regions.

  8. The only thing I hate about the Wii U is the name. Wii was already a dumb name. But Wii U is even dumber. They should have called it something else.

    1. By the power of Grey Skull!! I swear, even if they didn’t change a damn thing spec wise, differentiating it from the WiiU, marketing it as something NEW, Different and powerful (compared to the Wii) I believe it would have sold much better… At least it wouldn’t have the ‘casual’ connotation associated with it in addition to the lack of 1st party software.

  9. The only way to change people’s perspective about Nintendo is:

    • Make an in-house, next-gen engine developed exclusively to make Wii U beg for mercy, showing us the great power hidden within it.

    • Give the franchises that would fit a more mature atmosphere THAT mature atmosphere: Fire Emblem, Batallion Wars, Metroid, F-Zero and Zelda.

    • Push themselves so that at least Mario Kart U arrives this holiday season (December).

    • 2 new franchises: one for everyone and one for the ‘core’ gamers.

Guess that’ll be enough to kick some asses.

    1. Having Mario Kart U out this christmas would be a bombshell, but I doubt that’s going to happen. I’ve been a fan of them since I was 4, but even I have to admit that Nintendo’s always been incredibly sloppy when it comes to even UPHOLDING AN ALREADY ANNOUNCED RELEASE DATE (Remember Brawl and now Pikmin 3? Jesus, man). For some stupid reason they just refuse to hire more people to get more shit done and they keep apologizing for it. The problem here is acknowledging the issue and apologizing for it doesn’t do anything to solve it. Stop talking. Act.

  10. Its funny, hows the wii mini is selling?
I recently bought the Wii U and im getting board of nintendo land but I was playing nintendo through 3 different consoles without even knowing it.
Im a fan and I am patiant for the BEST games! I am aware of its potential and am sure that it will catch up and succeed!

  11. Everyday theres another story from Iwata, trying to reassure us/them that wii u will be a viable system. This is why Nintendo is going to fail Nintendo is unwilling to notice its 2013 not 1983, I’ve always stood by Nintendo, but he isn’t in touch with North American gamers, Europe or even Japan, sometimes you have to realize you screwed up and let someone else take over with knowledge of how things are

    1. Fuck that.
Let someone else take over his franchises and we’re likely to get the kind of failed games that EA tried to pass off during the Wii U’s launch.

  12. So what are his plans? A much better Nintendo Land with actual Nintendo characters or online multiplayer? Online Multiplayer alone would have attracted many more to Nintendo Land. We need Mario Kart 8 ASAP with online challenges and SSBU with seem less online multiplayer. We need Wii Sports U Resort. We need new installments for Metroid, Star Tropics and Earthbound. I am wondering how good Super Mario 3D World is, I hope it has more than a cat suit, I wish it had the FLUDD as a power-up and it had mor abilities to equip shooting fire, cloud, water, rocks, ice, etc.

  13. This is good new because every game shop I go to that has the Wii U doesn’t have Nintendo Land in it and it shows NSMBU and that doesn’t really show the Wii U capabilities.

  14. After the promising Japanese response to Pikmin 3, I am far more optimistic about WiiU’s future. If it can be replicated in other territories, then perhaps it will encourage a few more devs to sign up and turn around gamers’ opinions of Nintendo.

  16. They really should have marketed it as a “super DS”. Because if they still can’t figure what the Wii U is, then falling back on that isn’t a bad thing.

  18. Maybe include a free Lite version of Nintendo Land?
I didn’t really agree with there decision to make it a full game instead of a pack-in like Wii Sports, as it defeats the objective of showcasing what the Wii U can do if people just don’t buy it.
