Square Enix President Feels The Company Must Reform With Urgency

square_enix_booth

Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda believes that the company must reform with urgency if the company wants to remain competitive in the video game industry. Matsuda laid down his plans for the future of the company and says development and sales need to be unified as one. Matusda concluded by saying the DNA of providing high-quality content is in us.

“The business model is at a turning-point. Up until now, the profit of home-console games have been decided by price times the number [sold]. Development and sales were divided, and the game developers only needed to concentrate on their work. That’s where the strengths of our company laid within.

“At the very beginning, the game business started out with ‘how can we get people to insert coins’. Afterwards, consoles became popular, and our company grew as game design and billing [methods] were divided. Presently, online games are prosperous, which again, has the theme of ‘how can we charge the people,’ as developers and sales have become inseparable. And the devices they can be played on has spread vastly. It’s truly a paradigm shift.

“Past gaming generation changes took roughly three to five years. Nowadays, released titles are updated every day, and it only takes about three months for a situation to completely change. In order to react with such speed, it is urgent for development and sales to be unified as one.

“The former core was ‘standardization’ and now it has become ‘personality’. An especially important index is ‘asset-turnover ratio’. When making something, developers want to spend more time and money. However, that can be related to lowering the asset-turnover ratio, so the key point is to find a good balance.

“In fact, one of the factors of the final deficit is the delay from the development to release. Such time-lag means a decrease of contact frequency with the players. It is necessary for us to set up a system that allows us to meet the demands of our customers in a more timely manner. We can’t just have a year of leniency. We must reform with urgency.”

Matsuda said over the years he supported former president Yoichi Wada’s decisions but now that he is holding that position, he wants to make different decisions and “to continue taking [on] challenges from now on.”

“The DNA of providing high-quality content is in us,” he continued. “We will continue to honor this, while changing what needs to be changed. I am convinced we can make this drastic change into a chance of opportunity.”

    1. Big 3 arent overrated

No! If SMRPG Sequel is to be made it needs to be handled some good dev. SE doesnt care about quality nowadays.

  1. Big 3 arent overrated

Let me guess they are gonna reform themselfs by making 100000 pointless cheap ios games? Who cares about quality anymore? Profit and more profit, ff after ff etc.

    1. “Who cares about quality anymore? Profit and more profit, ff after ff etc.”

thats true but hey nintendo is just like that, who cares about quality?? exactly what nintendo is now, with their uncreative ideas and reused games. nothing new, nothing risky. just the same old profit and the same old boring game.

      1. Just like you…

Same uncreative thoughts and reused comments…
Nothing new, nothing worthy, just the same old you and the same boring statements…

Is this all you do in life?…

        Being here 24/7?…

You call us fans “corporate slaves” and yet the only slave to our empire is you by just coming back again and again…

Exposed and owned, don’t bother arguing against me, it’s pointless…

        1. you are a corporate slave, you think nintendo is the holy grail and does no wrong, when all they do now is gimmick everything and get no good games but their own rehashed franchises that are reused non risk taking ideas. you dont even have the wii u yet you stand up for it like no tomorrow saying its good!!!!!

          #dealwiththefacts

          1. Obviously you’re blind as I’ve criticized our empire on numerous occasions, but as always you Sonyans have the memory of a goldfish…

    1. They are doing it but I would he cautious the second one did not had the spected sale. The game started to sell when it was 20$ then when word of mouth got out about the game they raised the price to 30$.

    1. Square enix would be in a better shape if they go back to the ps1 and ps2 era but makes their game avalible to all plats.

  2. Nintendo Commander. How are you my friend? I am mostly viewing other sites these days. Our great mynintendonews is overrun with trolls. Especially since now that Nintendo has gotten great reviews for Super mario 3D world, Assassins creed 4 and Watchdogs.

    1. Greetings Gamer…

Well I’m fine, pretty busy with studies nowadays…

If you added me in 3DS I could join you on these other sites…

But hopefully the Nintendo Ambassadors Sickr,Alba and SilverShadowFly starts deleting their site from trolls and idiots…

  3. URGENCY (what should be done): Remake FF7-FF9, release on Wii U, as well as all future iterations. Release Kingdom Hearts 3 and HD collection on Wii U, brand new Deus Ex (not on i phone)

URGENCY (what Square will probably do): release a new Crystal Chronicles game on Wii U and Theatrhythm Final Fantasy on Wii U

  4. There’s only one way to reform, Square Enix: MAKE GAMES THAT AREN’T FINAL FANTASY!

Seriously, fans would like to see a new Chrono game, a Parasite Eve game, or a Secret of Evermore remake.

  5. GOSH I hate that Sora character. He’s so clumsy looking with those over-sized feet. And the keyblade looks SO un-threatening. KH is a great concept, but Sora………(- _ -)

  6. tough shit for triple a game companies now, thats what happens when you use too much resources on making games look good instead of making the gameplay good. Indie devs are literally swallowing the market right now.

  7. well well well, when I read his statement, I understand like this: We don’t care about quality games, our developers do not agree with our business model and I need to force them agreeing with it. We need to find a new way to make quick shitty game which gonna bring a lot of money. If we can’t make quick shitty game then we gonna screw the gamer by making DLC which remove the end of the game or the fun of it.

If he wants to make more money here some tips:
    – Stop think gamers are stupid and want simple stories, make growing up stories line with complicate reference (Xenogear and final Fantasy Tactis being those kind of games).
    – Make new IPs which are not branded Final Fantasy.
    – give more time to developers to come up with better ideas and make decent games (those will avoid games like FF13-2).
    – Focus on making FF11 and FF14 to be more enjoyable. I would dare to say get rid off the monthly subscription fee but that would not make any business sense.
    – Make better secret of Mana (Seiken Densetsu 2 like).
    – A real and good sequel of Chrono trigger which is one of the sequel the most desired.
    – If HD version should be one way, i would suggest Final fantasy 7 and 9 (please note that I don’t want it but i see it from a business point of view).
    – A proper sequel of Final fantasy tactics or actually a prequel (how the 50 years war start and how it end?) ,and please not those fluffy things tag with FF tactics.
    – I also think that all those prequel of Xenogear need to be done. With the same complicate plot.
    – As for game futuristic type game like Final Fantasy is one thing and should be develop further but why not going back to the root of RPG and do game like Final fantasy 1, secret of Mana (seiken desnetsu 2) or Chrono trigger. Obviously with new IPs and new character. I would ask a girls like Hiromu Arakawa (fullmetal alchemist) to take care of the scripts and character design of some new games.
    – For DLC I would suggest to get clothes/weapons only, or additional dungeon where players will get some fook off weapons which will make the game easier for lazy players.
    – Speaking about DLC, well having to buy the end of FF13 is not a good move for future release and it is the reason why they are failing at the minute (lost of trust and quality).
    – If SquareEnix wants to do shitty games, IOs games is the way to go, but again don’t overload with final fantasy branded game cause it just ruined the franchise so much (well it already done but it still can get worst).

    1. oups I forgot one thing, the price of DLC is ridiculously expensive. And as one mentioned here don’t start to put a game like £30 then when it becomes successful due to the word of mouth @ £50 (please note that method is for SqaureEnix own website, not retailers).

  8. I wish Square would team up with Nintendo and make a “true” sequel to Super Mario RPG: Legend Of The Seven Stars. It’s still my favorite of the RPG Mario games.
