Sonic Team open to Sonic Mania sequel with original developers

Sonic Team head Takazhi Iizuka has said there’s a possibility that a sequel to the well received Sonic Mania could happen someday. In a recent interview with Game Informer Iizuka said that they are still “really close” to the development team behind Sonic Mania and that there is “definitely a desire” to work with them them again though he stated that it is “not something that’s moving forward currently.”

“We’re still really close with them. We’ve gone out eating and drinking with them because relationships are important to us. They also have a lot of projects that they’re working on for what they want to do and what their business needs are. We don’t have anything to talk about now, but there’s definitely a desire to want to work with them again, and we think they could make a great game. It’s not off the books yet, but it’s not something that’s moving forward currently.”

  1. One of the few modern Sonic releases that everyone would be happy to see a sequel of…so of course Sega moved on to Superstars with a mediocre dev. Then in subsequent interviews threw 2D pixel art games under the bus by saying (basically) they can charge twice the price with a 2.5D game (no matter the quality of gameplay). Sadly that may be true, but only in the short term

  2. You guys let Evening Star’s Penny Big Breakaway flop, you do not deserve a Mania 2.

Besides that, they clearly did not want to be chained to Sonic for eternity.

    1. We’re not legally required to buy a game in order to get the games we want. It’s like “Please buy 1 2 Switch and if it sells well, we will give you a sequel to kid Icarus uprising.” I mean no offense the pennys big breakaway, I know it’s a cool game, but it struggled to stand out when it released. I honestly forgot about it until you brought it up.

    2. Bad games deserve to fail.
I bought both and they were boring.

All they had to do was make Sonic mania 2, and they’d be laughing to the bank.

      1. Same here. I love games that use yo-yo’s, but that game didn’t really click with me. At least the demo that is.
