Speculation is stirring on the web following Sakurai’s latest Smash Bros. Wii U screenshot, pictured above. The image hints at the inclusion of Xerneas from Pokemon X & Y, but will the character be a playable fighter in the new Smash Bros.? Will Xerneas be tied to Pikachu’s abilities somehow? Sakurai has not released any definitive information regarding the screenshot, so for now, gamers will have to simply wait for the first high-def Smash Bros. game, and get their Xerneas fix from the fast-selling Pokemon X & Y on 3DS.

I wouldn’t expect to play as a four legged creature that cannot stand up right on its hind legs as pikachu can. even for a fictional creature i couldn’t imagine it, so this is more likely

I think it won’t be playable, if it’s even included, the most likely thing to happen is it will be a rare pokéball, just like Entei, Suicune and the other legendary pokémons on Smash.
I like how they came to the conclusion that it would be connected to Pikachu’s moveset before they even considered it being a PokéBall summon or a background model.

If anything, it would confirm that he’s not playable! Nintendo won’t show us a screenshot of a playable character without announcing “Newcomer”. It’s obviously either a Pokemon from the Pokeball item or a Pokemon seen on a Pokemon themed stage.

Well it is isn’t a playable character seeing we didn’t get a trailer or announcement prior to him being in this picture.
But look at Mewtwo (also a legendary), he was a Smash Bros character in Melee. Back then he was arguably the strongest in the game (with only 2 generations released so-far).
With his 2 new Mega evolutions he’s once again arguably the strongest and Sakurai said he was being considered at the Pokemon X/Y conference.
Being a legendary just means if you’re confirmed as a playable character for Smash Bros., you’ll be toned down so you most likely won’t be a broken character.

As a person who has never played a Pokemon game, can someone tell me what the big deal is? Is this some super powerful Pokemon or something? I only know of a handful of Pokemon characters, and most are only because of Smash Brothers. So I have no idea who this Xerneas character is.
