Legendary Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma recently took the opportunity to speak to Japanese gaming publication 4Gamer about all things Zelda. Aonuma briefly discussed the next Zelda title which is being build for the Wii U from the ground up. One of the things that Aonuma mentioned is the next Zelda title will fully utilise the Wii U GamePad, more so than the recently released Gamecube remake of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD.
4Gamer: How is the new Wii U title coming along?
Eiji Aonuma: Of course it’s moving along. We also have to reflect on what we did with Wind Waker for our next title. Since Wind Waker HD was a remake, there were limits to what we could do with the Wii U GamePad, but for a new title, we can utilize it to the fullest.
4Gamer: So people who have played Wind Waker HD can expect some of those elements to carry over onto the next game.
Eiji Aonuma: I believe so. For example, on the Wii U GamePad, you have a map display on the screen. This map isn’t just for the sea, it’s also for other locations as well. We will reflect on these sort of things for a new game.
Thanks, Jordan

First
Spoiler: This game is going to get delayed over 50 times.
And at the end of the day it will be awesome, like (almost) every Zelda-game!
Yeah, yeah, no, it’ll probably be as gimmicky as skyward sword, if that happens, goodbye nintendo!FUCK YOU, Nintendo
Skyward Sword was the best thing to happen to TLoZ in years. Amazing dungeons, memorable bosses, interesting areas and unique items.
Utilize not Utilise!
Depends on where the author lives.
No one wants your shitty American spelling.
British English my dear.
Well, english is from England so the correct spelling form is Utilise. Americans got it all wrong
Can I set you on fire?
Does it need to use the GamePad? No, but it WILL
Why not? The gamepad is a BIG part of the wiiu..
The GamePad is the whole point of the Wii U and that’s why it’s selling like crap, it’s not a good point. And every game must use it because if they don’t, well, it would make the GamePad look irrelevant, because it is
I have to agree, I wished nintendo gave us an upgraded game cube controller and gave it some more power so devs don’t complain
Baton Kaitos would be much better with the Gamepad.
You have a good point, except for the fact that the gamepad is irrelevant. What he’s trying to say is, “Can I use the Pro controller?”
saying the wiiu is selling like crap is an understatement, i think the wiiu is selling like crap cus it needs more games and a better marketing strategy which nintendo has been doing poorly so far with all the confusion regarding its name…
You’ve played Wind Waker HD? Switching items on the fly is a real time saver.
that I’ll agree with…
once again, the dude who wouldn’t buy ALBW, just because is too different, you word doesn’t have a weight man, just get over it
yeah i remembered him saying that, nintendo just cant satisfy everyone…
Give me a good Zelda over a unique Zelda any day
A game must aim to be good, not different
“A game must aim to be good, not different”
That’s how we get games like New Super Mario Bros. 2…
So… I fully disagree…
That game tryied to be different you piece of shit, also we got 2 mario bros games that year, also wtf, who says that?
not really… the majority of games i have can be played with a pro controller
NSMBU, Ninja gaiden 3, and Windwaker.
I can’t play zombiU single player with the pro controller, but its nothing an update cant fix.besides. more games they’re making today are beginning to make the gamepad more of an optional choice. i can foresee that Mario kart 8 and super smash bros will be pro controller oriented. we already know that super mario 3D world will feature pro controller play as well. The game pad is to simply make gameplay more ‘Enjoyable’.
Says the guy that doesn’t have one. We have…3DS XL, iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, PS3, Vita, Wii U & Xbox 360. We love the Game Pad. It adds to the experience and is awesome for two player games, NO SPLIT SCREENS!….and no more screen peeking is just one of the many pluses! Anyone who trashes the Game Pad doesn’t own one. so that says more about them than the Game Pad. Instead of going around knocking something you don’t have, spend more time enjoying what you do.
The Game Pad is a piece of homosexual. Proven fact. Nintendo flopped with it and now their fating around flopping their nuts all over their fans.
old
Just reveal the game already! I am really hoping we get to see it soon and not have to wait until next E3. If he almost showed it at comic con, why would we have to wait that long?
Because he’s old and has to take care of his wrinkly nuts.
Yeah. No shit.
MAPS CONFIRMED FOR ZELDA WII U!
FUCK YES
SO FRIGGIN HAPPY! MAPS ARE BAAAAAAAAAACK!!!
I hope the pro controller is an option or wiimote and nunchuk.
Does this mean that Zelda WiiU has just confirmed Sea Exploration?
He’s already said that he it may or may not, leaving us in suspense… Personally, I want to travel between continents, like Holodrum, Hyrule, New Hyrule, and Lybrynna.
I was kind of disappointed when I realized Wind Waker HD restricted the use of items to buttons even though there’s a touch screen. I liked how in OoT 3D you could have two extra items equipped and used through the touch screen.
I dont know, the touch screen is a little too distant from the buttons on the gamepad in my opinion. I dont think a reach like that is worth it when you have 3 other buttons to use (X, Y, and R)
I just find it convenient to not have to switch out the items I have assigned to the buttons as often.
You are transparent.
So many people are gonna bitch if you have to use the gamepad instead of the pro control. I prefer wii remote especially how good it was in skyward sword. Im ok if you can only use the gamepad though
In WWHD you didn’t have to use the Gamepad, I’m sure it will work the same way.
Gamepad is a perfect fit for a Zelda game, because they are mainly about exploration and puzzle solving. A touchscreen will make all sorts of new puzzle solving possibilities…well…possible :P
How about we just move all Zelda titles to the 3DS? That way I don’t have to purchase a Wii U.
then we won’t get an HD zelda
how about the other way round then i don’t have to purchase a 3DS (which i won’t anyway.. i don’t like handhelds very much)
Great Hardstroke: “How about we just move all Zelda titles to the 3DS? That way I don’t have to purchase a Wii U”
How about you fall of a damn cliff?
*How about you fall off a damn cliff?
Having the gamepad screen for the map inventory and menu is great, but I’m really interested to see how it will be used with items for puzzle-solving and combat. There’s a lot of potential there. I can’t wait!–well, I can thanks to Wind Waker HD ;)
I don’t have a Wii U and never played on it. So far, I don’t think I would fully enjoy a Zelda game with this huge thing in my hands, even if the idea of having the map right under my eyes is kinda cool.
I hope I will be able to play with the Wii U pro controller.
But then again, wait & see.
The gamepad isn’t as big as you think. It weighs like 1 pound so… there should be NO problem holding it. It is awkward to hold at first but then it becomes so comfortable, its ALMOST as comfortable as the gamecube controller (and there are people who dislike that controller) So if you buy a Wii U for Zelda, get used to the controller because your experience will not be as a good as with the gamepad
Some people can’t play Wind Waker without the gamepad now, its almost Necessary for the game.
Okay, thanks for the feedback.
I thought it would be a pain to hold a keyboard-sized “controller” in his hands, but yeah, people seem to say it’s rather comfortable.
Glad I could help :)
the gamepad is subtle but that alone makes it amazing
Having something like a map seems cool but when u WITNESS it for yourself, its like you can’t live without it
So don’t count the Wii U and If you’ve ever held a tablet, you’ve held the gamepad, they are roughly the same size…. maybe
then why the fuck would you have an opinion of how “it feels” ._.
I’ve never had a single person that has come over to play on our Wii U complain about the size of the Game Pad. They all seem to like it. For us, we have zero problems with the GP.
Greatest Franchise + Greatest Controller = I can’t wait.
TOO BAD THEY REFUSE TO USE THE TECH DEMO GRAPHICS.
I STARTING TO BELIEVE THOSE WERE CGI ANIMATION AND NOT REAL TIME GRAPHICS.
its a Tech Demo dood, and no one said they would refuse to you the demo graphics, the game will look like the demo but with a DIFFERENT ART STYLE, because that was the twilight princess art style
actually aonuma said it would have a “unique look” which is neither realistic nor cartoony
whatever that means but i guess it pretty much excludes both the visual style of windwaker and of the tech demo
That is true, I have heard so little news about the game I forgot about what he has said :/
Guess we will see soon enough
This game is actually closer than you think for one reason :D
and its real graphics because we’ve seen what they can do like Mairo 3d World and Most Wanted U using the PC textures
Why do we have a screenshot of the Zelda tech demo to illustrate this news? I barely can see the point.
Because there’s absolutely no other pics that pertain to Zelda Wii U.
But seems that the blogger wants to share the idea that Zelda Wii U will look like that tech demo.
But it won’t. But. It. Won’t.
I got very disappointed when I saw the WW graphic style instead of that Zelda Cube tech demo years back.
true it won’t but what’s so bad about that? why is everyone always so fixated on a realistic visual style?
personally i liked the visuals of windwaker
zelda wii u however won’t be as cartoony as that, that much is clear
guess we’ll have to wait and see
Unless I’mm wrong, Mr. Aonuma already said that the graphic art stile won’t be the same we got in that Wii U Zelda tech demo.
And it’s not about being or not being realistic, it is about showing off something that makes your jaw drop and then deliver something totally different.
In time: I’m playing WWHD, and this HD version is far superior than the Cube one. Of course Nintendo could fix all the problems of the Cube version (camera, controls, etc). Actually, replaying WW almost 10 years later is making me enjoy the game.
“Unless I’mm wrong, Mr. Aonuma already said that the graphic art stile won’t be the same we got in that Wii U Zelda tech demo.”
what did i say that would contest that? i actually confirmed what you said…
and wind waker on gamecube was quite stunning at that time visually so i’m not quite sure what your point is
My point is:
“And it’s not about being or not being realistic, it is about showing off something that makes your jaw drop and then deliver something totally different.”
I didn’t say that you contested me. Sorry if I was unable to made that more clear.
well thats me personally but i tought windwaker was pretty jawdropping, what with the relatively advanced physics engine, the way the ocean was depicted, the huge open world without loading screens (streaming to that extent was pretty new at that time) and so on
People want to see a realistic art style because seeing a fantasy based game like the Zelda games come to life would be too awesome. The enemies, the fantasy landscapes, and everything else would look beautiful. It’s being realistic on a fantasy level that makes things stand out and not make them look like what we see everyday.
“It’s being realistic on a fantasy level that makes things stand out and not make them look like what we see everyday.”
non realistic graphics offer the same experience.. even more so
and being non realistic doesn’t mean it’s ugly
okami for example was gorgeous considering the hardware it ran on
I hope they thought about Pro controller as an option during R&D. After all Nintendo is stupid for not thinking of the Pro controller during development of NSMBU as well as lack of online during the development of Pikmin 3 and 3D Mario World and stupid of not thinking of PS4 during development of Wii U. That’s why Wii U is in the situation it is now lack of thinking about options and the future.
I really like to use the Pro Controller and give the Wii U Game Pad a rest – I still feel the latter kind of awkward in my hands. The Pro Controller is my choice #1 whenever is possible.
Pro Controller should be optional on all games on the Wii U console.
http://youtu.be/Ki0KCQAC5Wg?t=2s
Here we go again…. PLATFOEMERS AND ONLINE MULTIPLAYER ISN’T THE BEST OPTION. Why u may ask. one word….LAG. if that so much as happen and it will, whether its a jump or moving in the tubes, it will mess u up. Rayman didn’t have it, yet no complaints.
If you would get out of your Nintendo only attitude and try other consoles you would know that online + platforms = Awesome. Go try Trine 2 on WiiU actually, no lag whatsoever, and w/o the online mp, It wouldn’t be nearly as fun as it is. People like you make me sick to my stomach.
And another thing…MP wouldn’t even effect YOU in the slightest if your not even going to use it,ya fucking Dbag. So instead of being a jack ass why don’t you support online for Nintendo and help bring them out of the stone age.
Ignoring Ray man is a 2D like Trine 2 and Trine 2 has online and it works great. Also how you know online won’t work on 3D Mario World? Like I said earlier Nintendo was stupid for not putting online during development of AAA tittles.
I guess I can never experience playing Pikmin online with an expert since Nintendo is too stupid to have thought online on AAA tittles. People like my friends lose in Pikmin. 10-0. Boring!
Once 3D Mario World arrives and I play multiplayer its going to suck because I’ll be too busy telling then to get a mushroom and popping their bubbles every time they die. Online are the real gamers. The same for smash bros. Beating your friends 10-0 sucks. Online however is a challenge. I also always win in Mario Kart except online. But Nintendo is so stupid they think causal gamers mix with gamers.
Trine 2 online gamers know what they are doing. They know how to use weapons and items to cross over or climb. Playing MP locally, not smart enough to use the wizard to make boxes or use the bows to melt ice or start fires. Frozen byte thought of this during development of Trine 2. Good for y’all. What does it take dumbtendo to think of this?

as long as it offers the same sword controls as skyward sword i’m all aboard
after all what’s the point of ever having released the wiimote when the whole concept is ditched with the next console
Reblogged this on Curiosidades na internet.
I hope that doesn’t mean motion controls were a one-off.
more of a two-off since the Wii version of TP and SS used motion controls.
If Dumbtendo thought of the pro controller during development of Zelda U. If not that’s just dumbtendo for you.
I certainly hope so. Skyward Sword made me hate motion controls.
Hmmm….
OH!! Here’s one way they can use the gamepad in a useful way . Remember how you can use the mirror of truth in OoT. Well what if you use the second screen on the gamepad as if it WAS the mirror of truth revealing anything suspicious or hidden!
or or, they can let me use the fucking PRO CONTROLLER so i can get wasted without worrying about stupid gimmicks!! hahaha
shouldn’t have bought a wii u if you’re not okay with the gamepad
it was clear from the beginning that many games would require it
they shouldnt force it on you. they have a normal controller too.
again: you should have known what you were in for
you have got only yourself to blame if you didn’t aquire the necessary information or chose to ignore it before buying
there are touchscreens gameplay elements that can’t be replicated with a pro controller
oh like what roll the fucking bonb with sliding the stylus on the touch scree. or press a buton. no you can make anything work on a traditional controller.
um no
play nintendoland and you’ll know
‘Aonuma Says Zelda Wii U Will Fully Utilise The Wii U GamePad’ – is this really news? I think this was an obvious.
was obvious*

The gamepad better not be OVERused, like with some games where they make a console with an important accessory that they make you use constantly to the point where it gets annoying :P
I WANT ALL GAMEPLAY REMOVED I WANT A SONY EXPERIENCE GO BUY A SONY YOU FUK TARD
Interesting reply, although I have no idea what you just said, I thank you for your opinion.

Maps…
Is that what most people can come up with?…
Boring…
inventory!
^this…
he gives a map as an example…what an asshole -,-
USE the gamepad, instead of giving every game a map and then saying it is using the wiiu gamepad in every imaginable way, so pathetic.
