Iwata Talks About The Company’s Stance On Third Party Developers

wii_u_gamepad_up_close

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has clarified his personal stance on third-party developers during the company’s recent investors question and answer session. Iwata says that the Kyoto based company takes its own path and won’t give in to competitive approaches which include money giving for exclusives, which he says would never end. Iwata concluded by saying that Nintendo would like to take a unique approach of their own and build sustainable relationships with key third-party publishers.

“In terms of how we view our relationship with third-party publishers, I think it is natural that there is a difference between publishers who have the software development resources like Nintendo’s to build a software lineup of their own and publishers who do not. Since former President Yamauchi passed away, I have been considering what he taught us in the end, and his words that the worst thing we can do in entertainment is to follow what others are doing spoke directly to my heart. Following and imitating others is the kind of reasoning that Nintendo tries to avoid the most, and while we certainly do not have a negative attitude toward strengthening our ties with third-party publishers, employing the same methodology as the other manufacturers would only lead to the most simplistic competitive approaches, such as price wars or money-giving that would never end. We would like to take a unique approach of our own and build sustainable relationships with our third-party publishers.”

    1. Your SPOT ON!!! Nintendo knows what there doing when it comes to third party!

Look at Sony and the shit station with pouring money into getting third party games exclusive to the system but yet there losing money by the Billions. Microsoft and the Dude Bro Box are also in a HUGE loss and Microsoft is getting sick of paying for cancer treatment for an incurable cancer. Just a matter of time before Sony and Microsoft go third party. Sony has all but confirmed there going third party after this gen. Sony stated there going to go the way of Netflix and become a service to other devices… Sounds like THIRD PARTY to me!

    1. I might be wrong but I think Nintendo Help fund games for capcom Resident Evil on the GameCube.

but it wasn’t in a bribery or throwing money type of way…

    2. What are you a retard? I have like 7 third party games on my 3ds Nd looking in the wii eshop there’s a TON from the last 6 years. And dsiware and such. Maybe it’s not the best or maybe you need to shut the fuck up

    3. Hmmm, $35+ Billion in profits LTD and about $14 Billion in cash from video games vs Sony at about $2 Billion in LTD profits from Playstation and Xbox still in the red tells a different story.

    4. It worked quite well for the wii, actually. Granted, they didn’t get most of the AAA third party games, but they still got tons of solid support from smaller devs and lots of decent lesser-known titles in addition to a few wonderful gems.(Xenoblade, anyone?)

  1. I like that nintendo is the only company that dont bribe or take bribes left ,unlike the other two. At least not as big anyways ;)

  2. This is true…this is what microsoft is doing with third party like EA TitanFall and Sony which i am disappointed that they did this with Ubisoft Watch Dogs and Assasin Greed 4.

If I had my own company. I would never do such a thing. it just mean that you are a FAILLER and can’t think of something on your own and all you know how to do is THROW money to get somebody to do it for you…

    it pathetic and Pitiful

  3. Lame excuse for using gimmics and underpowered hardware yet another generation again by explaining it as “doing things different”

  4. Basically Nintendo wont just throw money at companies who aren’t skilled and talented for what they do, MAKE GAMES… These 3rd party companies don’t even believe in their own works. If a game is creative, high quality (no many glitches) and fun. It will sale END OF STORY… These guys don’t believe in that so they rather waste money on marketing and tech. Tech that 1. isn’t even utilized correctly 2. waste full and 3. (MOST CRITICAL) EXPENSIVE.. Then look to the two companies that spoiled them MS and Sony’s lack off gaming integrity and reckless spending to be given that money back to them… Not Nintendo because they can make their own games, they don’t really need 3rd parties.. And this is what 3rd Parties, MS, Sony and the believe it our not the Gaming Media hates about Nintendo. Nintendo knows how to make a profit from gaming and gaming alone.. They don’t need to spend money on a gaming review (CoD, GTA, etc) to get a good score to sell or to be blind to the fact that a key component of a game like online is completely broken even when launched, after the actual game was launched…

Nintendo, is the last gamers gamer company..

      1. Yeah the fan boys who accepts dumbtendo’s stupid ideas with not putting online on AAA tittles like Sony and Xbone games and their fans enjoys the online experience.

        1. Well I told you some time ago that High Command doesn’t put online just for the sake of it…

But the almost complete lack of online games annoys me though…

        2. Well, with the Xbone comment, we know your a Sony fanboy. Now to just figure out if you’re twelve or thirteen.

btw..We’re sorry that your step dad touches you inappropriately, but you don’t need to take it out on us.

      1. Change your name to “Mr low I.Q” now. Indies are just a good thing for consumers dosnt need to be for the consoles manufactures after all is the total of Indie in certain console that makes it interesting not just a few games.

            1. Ignoring Wii U owners ain’t bought enough to reach top ten. Also ignoring it’s more Dumbtendo’s job to entertain is but I bet less than 3.9 million are even entertained by those indi devs. Pikmin 3 sold over 100,000 and moved units.

      1. So? Its still different and cool system which i like! I dont care how much it sells, i dont want system that clones other systems and has controller from 90s

          1. Stop right there. That GamePad is awesome and I love it. They were just dumb not making it powerful enough to handle 4 gamepads. That would have been better. That way everyone gets to play with a GamePad with out tv. Playing smash bros with just gamepads would have been sweet. But dumbtendo was too stupid to try to make the console powerful enough for 4 gamepads. Too stupid to realize kids who you marketing for will fight with who gets the gamepad. Too stupid to think that in 2008.

        1. Ignoring you need sales to bring in money for more Wii U games and another generation console. I just hope dumbtendo ain’t trying to make the next console just a little tiny bit more powerful than PS4.

  5. Nintendo is awesome. I love how they do their own thing. Which is one of the reasons why I’ve always loved them. The PS4 and Xbox One can both merge into one console, and it will still feel the same (if that makes any sense). Nintendo has always been different. And in this case, different is good. My ONLY complaint about Nintendo is the way they put limitations on everything they do.

  6. :’) brought a tear to my eye! Yamauichi a
Was a smart man! Keep doing something different Nintendo! It’s why we love you! I would rather play something different and made with care
Then something graphic intensive and same as the redt

  7. This is why I love Nintendo. I completely agree with the whole making good partnerships with other companies rather than just throwing money at them. Along with that, they do their own things and have my respect for that.. They may not be doing too well right now, but at least they still have a good mindset.

  8. While a noble and somewhat strong attitude, Nintendos’s got to start realizing that this kind of attitude is one of the sole reasons, that the Wii U is going down the drain.
We’re all Nintendo fans here, but we’ve got to start realizing Nintendo is doing BAD at the moment with Wii U, and Sony and Microsoft is looking to have the strongest release of a new generation of consoles ever. They’ll more than likely top the number of sold Wii Us in a lifetime, in just a few weeks.

Wii U have a few moths left tops, and nor Mario, Wii Party U or Wind Waker have what it takes to put the console back at the map. It’s dead and though it’s not funny to realize that, you just got to. There is absolutely no hope. Goodbye smash bros, Bayonetta and Zelda.

    1. You’re counting it out before it has hit its first party stride. Come back mid-2014,. We’ll see what’s what by then.

your last comment force me to reply. everyone plus Nintendo already knows that they will finish in last place so install base comment that you made me nothing. I bet it does not matter to Nintendo corparate which place they finish in, be it first place 2nd place or 3rd place. the company just wants to be different from the others . they’re trying to carve their own market . They dont want to be competing with the other two because it is a lost cause. I understand that thinking this way for most of the people using this site is very difficult because the people using this site has always experienced Nintendo competing with other console manufacturers. but after the gamecube Nintendo has decided to go a different route. so whether or not the console will sell more than a competition or less than the competition means nothing to Nintendo as long as they can make a profit off of this console generation and established a new market for themselves.

  9. Iwata is the one who made Nintendo into the baby company. Back when Mr. Yamauchi was in charge Nintendo was a much more diversified company. They had awesome 2nd party studios (Rare, Left Field, Silicon Knights, excellent relationship with Factor 5) and made games like Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Excitebike64, Eternal Darkness, 1080°, Wave Race etc. Different type of games that appeal to the ones of us who never been interested in the baby and whatnot games. Having these games attracted other 3rd party developers to bring their own games on Nintendo systems. But now with Iwata in charge Nintendo is the baby games company. If Nintendo only outputs baby games the only 3rd parties that will come are the ones that produce baby games. So the Wii U will continue to miss out on all the triple A games that come to other consoles, in favor of getting what? Baby games of course.

    1. Bayonetta, X, smash bros Mario kart and the various multiplatform games from both third parties prove you’re just a troll.

      1. Will can you blame him? Dumbtendo advertised 3D World like it’s for 3 year olds. I think 40% of Dumbtendo’s dime decisions are from you fanboys who just accepts anything Dumbtendo does

      1. Will what can you say I’m a Nintendo but unlike you I don’t just accept 3D World and Nintendo Land don’t need online.

  10. Peanut Butter Kit Kat

This is pretty much what I said in a previous comment, all MS and Sony have done is split an audience (PS2 155 Million, PS3 78 Million/360 80 Million)

Trying to emulate Sony and MS would be a very bad idea, the market is already saturated as it is and trying to compete with the PS4 and Xbone is not financially viable, it’s going to be a very expensive exercise for very little gain.

Nintendo need to do something different…

    1. They already did make an awesome console with a great gamepad that sold less than 4 million.i only wish it was more powerful for 4 gamepads not just one which was stupid. Sure the price would have been higher but….. It. Wouldn’t sell well like it is now. Still wish it had the power to operate 4 gamepads. But two Gamepads are better than one. But when will dumbtendo bring a game that supports two?

      1. Peanut Butter Kit Kat

Nintendo don’t want to make a loss on hardware because it’s not financially viable. They don’t have the resources that Sony and MS do, they can’t afford to give their console away for free with mobile phone contracts, TVs and Blu Ray players because they are just a gaming company. They have to make the hardware affordable.

The problem is as the article suggests, the games. Iwata pretty much spelled it out for you, 3rd party AAA titles require lots of money, Nintendo don’t want to get caught up in a bidding war like Sony and MS have which is why a different approach regarding software is needed..

    2. Trying to copy Sony and Microsoft? There is nothing wrong with the games but Nintendo sure could copy how Microsoft and Sony advertises.

      1. Peanut Butter Kit Kat

it’s not that simple, Sony and Microsoft have their fingers in a lot of pies. They don’t just make games consoles, Sony also have their own stores, tv channel, they also make phones, TVs and Blu Ray players.

Advertising is extremely expensive, it’s not as straight forward as you think. I do agree that Nintendo should be utilising their advertising budget a lot better though, Nintendo UK for example have bought more floor space in Tesco for the Xmas period…

      2. Nintendo Police Officer

they cannot copy the way at Microsoft and Sony advertises because Nintendo is not going after the hardcore market . they are going after a different market and when I say different I’m talking more towards casuals families and children and it does not matter if you think that is a stupid idea or not. the fact remains that Nintendo is trying to go after a different audience than their competitors because the AAA hardcore gamer market is over saturated and it’s too expensive.

  11. Iwata is correct. This is why Nintendo really are a good company. And people say that he should resign. Iwata you are a good leader.

  12. The is what is called a “red-herring.” In order to take attention away from the actually issue in which he has no answers for he veers off into a tangent on issues that are not paramount.

The reason Nintendo is in the fix it is right now is not because of the lack of 3rd party support. It is because of the lack of games, lack of variety in game genres, lack of functions on their consoles that have become 2nd nature to gamers (DLC, online, cross-game chat, etc,) lack of good business practices (i.e. naming their 8th-gen system “Wii U,” releasing the Wii Mini in North America, choosing not to place online multiplayer in the biggest title the Wii U has had to date in Super Mario 3D World, burning brides with some western-developers, letting developer they used to own get away like Left Field and Rare, and not funding or out right buying companies that have worked with them in the past such as Silicon Knights, etc,) and lack of good marketing and advertising.

If Nintendo did what they are supposed to do they wouldn’t need a single dime from 3rd-party developers or nary game from them so what he is saying is a moot point. He is looking for sympathy because he knows that he is incapable of making the decisions necessary to make all those things happen.

Hiroshi Yamauchi was the guy that could and DID make things happen and it is interesting how he keep bringing him up in a sense to how Yamauchi would have approved of his current business model when the facts of what Yamauchi actually did while running Nintendo was a complete contrast to that.

You have to give credit where credit is due. Yes, under Iwata Nintendo reached it’s highest market cap every at $85 billion. Yes. The Wii and DS combined has sold over 250 million units and right now the 3DS is the fastest-selling console of all-time and number one worldwide. You also have to point out the flaws as well.

Under Iwata Nintendo suffered it’s first annual fiscal-loss followed buy another loss the following year. Under Iwata Nintendo has all but lost 3rd party support (and not just from money-grubbing leeches like EA, but from respectable companies as well.) And the 3rd party support it does have equates to someone frying up some chicken for the 3 big three and Nintendo gets the piece that fell on the dirty kitchen floor. Under Iwata the 1st and 2nd party division has all but become totally niche to one of 2 genres. Platformers and party games. Under Iwata advertising and marketing have completely disappeared. While Nintendo Directs are a good idea, they are only DIRECTED towards people who already own Nintendo console or have no interest in purchasing one so it has little to no value for casuals that moved on after the Wii or 1st-timers. While imagination and creativity still exists in some of their games, it doesn’t exist in the marketing. I mean seriously. “Wii U?” C’mon. Iwata can say all he wants about how Nintendo isn’t abandoning 3D with the release of the 2DS, but those are words for people not intelligent or informed enough to know better. The 3DS was a shot-in-the-dark to try and capitalize on the 3D craze and unfortunately for Nintendo the craze died out before the system hit store shelves. The Wii U was an attempt to zero in on the tablet craze. If people actually KNEW about it maybe it could work. However the problem is that people don’t know about it and those that do outside of the core gaming community think it is a attachment to the Wii which is a turn off because those people as I said earlier already moved on from the Wii.

I’m really interested just how long this charade of Iwata being CEO is going to last. I’m really interested in seeing the resolve the board of directors at Nintendo and investors have. Do they have faith that Iwata will somehow pull out abilities he’s never shown before to turn this thing around before it’s too late, or are they just waiting for the other shoe to drop in March when they can officially, courteously, and FINALLY usher Mr. Saturo Iwata DIRECTLY out the door.

    1. You have some good points. As much as I love Nintendo, they just haven’t put anything out there that makes people want the Wii U. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the system, but I rather play my gamecube or n64 for now.

      1. And you know why probably? Because those system had balance. While they also had 3rd-party issues as well, they were nowhere near as bad as what the Wii U has. But, what they had that the Wii U lacks was supplements for them. You had representations of all game genres on the N64 and GameCube. I mean, it was the N64 the basically launched mutilplayer, 1st-person shooters (GoldenEye007) and 3rd-person shooters(StarFox 64 multiplayer) popularity.

I mean realistically, if I like professional sports games, fighting games, racing sims, 1st-person shooters, 3rd-person shooters, action adventure, and MMOs why am I buying a Wii U if I was someone whom enjoys any combination of those genres and did not own the system just yet? I mean it’s a fair question to ask that Nintendo has failed to answer with anything other that the sentiment that you should just like what THEY want to give you for no other reason than because it’s there. Platformers and party games aren’t for everyone. The only exclusive racing title the Wii U has is Fast Racing NEO. I’m sure the game will be cool but the Wii U needs much more than that. Technically Smash Bros is a fighting game, but that is all the Wii U has and Smash doesn’t appeal to most fighting games fans. It has a very dedicated audience no doubt, but not all encompassing like the audience of some of the heavyweight fighting games like Tekken, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat etc. Killer Instinct (which USED to be a Nintendo title) might even give it a run for it’s money. Wouldn’t that be a kick in the head. There needs to be something else along with Smash Bros.

Project X should go a long way to fill the RPG void. Bayonetta 2 will definitely be a good action-adventure filler. They have some grey matter to work with, they just need to abandon these foolish practices, do some REAL focus studies on what actually works instead of what they WANT to work, and implement them. Nintendo CAN be fixed.

yamaguchi is also the guy who lost Final Fantasy over to Sony he is also the reason why third parties in the West darn near Hate Nintendo guts. you have no idea what type of replacement Nintendo can find to fill the Iwata’s shoes. Nintendo fans are the weakest, very weak minded in comparison to the other console fans. I’ve never heard Sony fans criticize there console or the creative minds behind their consoles neither have I heard Xbox fans criticize the people behind the Xbox brands, it is only within our fan base that we hear so much complaining whining and crying taking place. Nintendo fans need to stop behaving so ridiculously. if you want to see a change made at Nintendo you must use miiverse. miiverse is the only place that you guys can communicate directly with Nintendo. many people say it time and time again that miiversus the only place that you can communicate with the Japanese staff at Nintend. you cannot do that on YouTube you cannot do that on Facebook and you cannot do that on Twitter. if you do not have a Wii U console yet and you want to voice your opinion then get off your butt and buy the Wii U so that you can talk directly with Nintendo’s president. at least if you buy the Wii U you will also be helping to increase the install base as well as make your opinion heard through miiverse

      1. This couldn’t be anymore immature of a response. Well maybe not, but pretty close.

Already had a Wii U, already voiced my displeasure. I’ve even written letters to their offices in Redmond, Washington. There are plenty of people out who share my displeasure and have voiced on twitter and Miiverse and every other social outlets available. And yet, Nintendo right around say does something like having never before seen levels playable of Super Mario 3D World……..at the Pottery Barn.

        *crickets*

So that combined with Iwata latest barrage excuses and resolve to resign is proof positive that either he doesn’t care what people think, is incapable of understanding what is wrong, or acknowledges that things are screwed up but he feels he can still fix it. I think that latter is true. I disagree, but that I think that is the more plausible explanation based on his remarks.

Before you embarrass yourself by talking about what I need to do in a epic fanboy tirade why don’t you ask questions first to save the humiliation. Besides that, stating the facts doesn’t mean this is such a big deal that I need to embark on a crusade to have Iwata removed. There are more important things to do than that. Message board are vehicles for people to voice their opinions. If you don’t like mine or agree, don’t read it. It’s really that simple.

  13. is nintendo fucking retarded. they’re following some stupid ass philosophy and ignoring what the gamers want. they honestly believe they can support fans by doing their own thing. it’s no wonder most 3rd party devs have no faith in the wiiu. shocking stuff.

  14. While I agree with Nintendo’s “unique” and “innovate” philiosophy, they still need to realize that they also should be catering to other gamer’s tastes. You can’t deny that there is a market that Nintendo needs to tap in the Mature and Sports segment. Could you imagine if Nintendo has their own shooter and sports games? Why would anybody go to other consoles?

    1. Nintendo Secretary of Defense

they had a Geist franchise, and the eternal darkness franchise. they had the Kobe Bryant franchise and the ken Griffey Jr franchise. they were fantastic games but none of those games sold very well. the only games that our Nintendo fan base tends to buy are the Super Mario games , pokemon and the family friendly (casual games). the proof is in the sales. not even the mature first party games such as Metroid sell very well. unfortunately even starfox and f-zero sales were not very good. I wonder how many Wii U owners bought Deus Ex. I understand that that particular game is not a first party games but all the signs points 2 the fact that most Nintendo gamers do not support mature games in the first place. so it would be pointless for Nintendo to begin making mature games as well as sport games.
