Sony Poised To Buy Nintendo DRAM Manufacturing Plant For ¥7 Billion?

NHK  is reporting that Sony is currently poised to purchase the Nintendo DRAM manufacturing plant for a staggering ¥7 billion. The DRAM chip that the company produces is currently found within Wii U consoles. The move has been expected for some time as we originally reported on it in December. Nintendo hasn’t commented on the situation and hasn’t confirmed a new partner as of yet.

    1. From what I remember or read for that matter is that they wanted to do this so that the factory wouldn’t get shut down.

Therefore it plays in Sony and Nintendo’s favour. If that rumor is turned down then I have no idea what this is implying.

      1. Yeah, they are going to convert over to making Sony camera chips or something like that from what I heard. And heard Nintendo had already had another DRAM partner once this contract ends, but its unlikely they will comment on switching manufactures on a part inside a machine. These things happen all the time at companies, and none of them say anything, why should we expect different cause its Nintendo.

    2. How does Sony even have the $$$ to finance this? Aren’t they in the red? I know PS4 is doing well, but they arent making $ off that yet really and every other industry they are in is volatile with them either in the red, or riding slim profits. I guess they are going for broke and using up all the cash reserves from selling their HQ building and other buildings they owned?

      1. As much as I hate to admit, someone should warn them about wasting their resources…

I don’t want them to fall just yet because their survivors will convert into Xbots mostly…

        1. Yea, I would much rather have the xbox fall. Here’s to hoping the new CEO of MS sells of xbox, maybe Nintendo can pick it up for the research and ip’s. Would love banjo-kazooie, Conker, ect in Smash Bros.

      1. What he is saying that for every Wii U console that is sold, Nintendo would to pay Sony a percentage of that as they would own the factory.

        1. of course not, nintendo buy the componets and that’s it, not “licensed feeds” and stuff like that, besides, if sony buy this company they would stop producing the DRAM

        1. Well obviously trying to kill big companies as soon as it has the opportunity to do so. I call that paralyzing the industry, or at least slowing it down. If they are alone on the market, nothing will prevent them from building shit and selling it to people.

              1. Yes. Sony is reportedly trying to save a factory that is closing down. If anything, that’s quite the opposite to “killing companies.” Did you read the news?

  1. If these were the Wii years, paying Sony a little for each console would be scary… but the U isn’t selling as well.
On the other side: Ummm Nintendo? You guys just gonna roll over and die?

  2. they don’t need to build the DRAM anyway … they have more than enough in stock to meet the demand of the WiiU already … Nintendo had plenty of time to produce all they wanted.

This, i believe, has nothing to do with the WiiU

  3. Unlikely this will change anything, the company signed a contract to produce parts for Nintendo, and visa versa, they can’t “back out” or change prices or whatever.

I’m more concerned as to why Sony’s under the impression they can spend ¥7 billion anyway on something as pointless like this anyway, SCE is in a good position but the rest of the conpany is in the shitter.

    1. Even though they have been on a decline, the company still has a crap ton of money.

I’m only assuming, since I haven’t really looked into it, but this purchase could possibly be because of the factory (or factories) they lost in the earthquake/tsunami a couple of years back.

  4. No body realized they bought the factory not the technology.

The crazy thing is why did Nintendo. It re up on it?

  5. I’m sure Nintendo has already worked on a solution on this, if not there are doing so as I type. This isn’t a giant conspiracy or Sony trying to destroy the Wii U or anything, it’s just Sony buying a factory. Nothing more.

    1. I might be wrong, but didnt Nintendo have 2 factories that were manufacturing chips for them? Isnt that the reason why this one was closing down because since the Wii U wasnt selling, they werent manufacturing as much which led to there decline?

Like I said, I might be wrong.

  6. You know, if Sony and Nintendo ever teamed up to make the perfect gaming system they would DESTROY Microsoft and take over the world…

I mean think about it. Combine the hardware specs of Snoy, with Nintendo’s innovation and Sony’s ability to draw attention from 3rd parties with Nintendo’s 1st parties…. It would be the greatest love child to ever be born.

Just saying… Sony and Nintendo are literally opposites who complement each other in every single way.

How stupid all those people look now that always claim Sony is so broke and they will be going bankrupt. I think blowing 7 billion is enough to prove you aren’t hurting that badly.

Same goes for Nintendo. I get so sick of all these articles about these two finicially hurting, sure they might not be making the money they made years ago but they are far from broke or going bankrupt. They can manage a few systems that don’t sell extremely well and still survive generations to come.
