Hugo Smits, a game developer from Goodbyegalaxygames, has written a blog post titled “Shut up! Nothing is wrong with Nintendo Wii U!” which attempts to defend the Wii U. Smits says the real problem with Nintendo is communication with consumers and developers coupled with Nintendo’s own services. Smits doesn’t think the Wii U is a bad console, but thinks it was just marketed poorly. He goes on to say that the same thing happened with Nintendo 3DS as consumers thought it was just a revised Nintendo DS after all the iterations of the Nintendo DS systems. You can read his post, here.
Nintendo DSi Ware Developer Defends Wii U

Another one of the few with some intelligence…
Marketing is the key flaw High Command did do wrong…
Im pretty sure is “Did Wrong” But dont mind my OCD
and yes, I agree
Ah yes my bad…
I don’t know how much intelligence he has, that article was terrible. So many spelling and grammatical errors. Redundancies, incorrect names, confusing syntax. The point he was making was correct, but also simplistic. It ignored a whole lot of factors. And everything he said is obvious and has been said a million time before.
And yet all of the doom and gloom articles reiterate the same “obvious” things but no one has a problem with that.
If they just started the commercial for the Wii U, with the person turning on the TV with the controller and then playing the game. When I found out, it was the first time I had considered buy the thing. The whole thing about the gamepad is about convenience and making things easy to use.
Yes but it doesn’t say anything about gaming though which is why our empire still exists in the first place…
Shut up! … there’s nothing wrong with the Virtual Boy! … never was and still is the best console ever … people just don’t “get it” yet.
Comparing the VB to the sacredness of the Wii U is like comparing me with an Xbot Commander…
Equally repulsive..
You make a good point, but i just think they need to market the Virtual Boy better … tour it around the country and let people try it … and maybe they should release a 2D Virtual Boy for those who are frightened of things flying off the screen.
The Virtual boy was an attempt to do something that couldn’t be done properly with the technology available at the time, why then may I ask how Nintendo failed to create a portable 3D console in the 1980s but managed to create one in 2011 successfully? I’ll tell you why, it was because the technology wasn’t available yet…
I know…
Still repulsive…
…
colored LCDs were available at the time, actually … the red/black LCD was just cheaper.
also, the Gameboy came out in the 80’s … you know, before you were born.
Whether it was red, blue, green or black LCDs, how are any of them able to produce a stable 3D effect? My point stands
You’re right … you’re right … but, i don’t use 3D on my 3DS. It seems to be great without it.
I think it’s a good gimmick for the sake of sales … people buy it for the 3D, but they love it for the 2D.
Did you know that most people never tried the Virtual Boy? … they decided they didn’t want it before they even tried it. It would be silly to think that people might still want the Virtual Boy, just because they didn’t try it … so, why are we playing that same game with the WiiU? … it’s been over a year and they still don’t want it … why are you pushing it so hard down their throats? … it’s done … the WiiU will be a weak seller … it will be a slow boat ride until the next Nintendo Console in a few years.
When we get Nintendo’s WiiU successor … you will not look back! … you’ll be ashamed of it … like the Virtual Boy
HD graphics are a “gimmick.” No one complains about that. Seriously. Everyone is grossly overusing the word gimmick. 3D is not a gimmick, it’s another visual play style. High Defininition is a gimmick. It’s another display style. Toggles that can be used as buttons on a controller, extra L & R buttons, gaming consoles as a whole. “Gimmicks” are useless things added to sell something that don’t add value. 3D is fun for many and adds value. The gamepad allows advanced inventory and OFF SCREEN play, which adds tremendous value to the console.
Please stop participating in the sad fad of using “gimmick” in relation to Nintendo.
I can’t imagine the 3DS games without the 3D…
I LOVE the 3D affect. It makes the games rich and immersive. But by God, if someone doesn’t like it, well it must be a gimmick!
Fucking idiots using the word gimmick for every feature they don’t like or approve of. (I’m not calling the guy I replied to an Idiot, but there have been quite a few.)
I just get sick of the hypocritical bull shit. If it’s Nintendo. It’s a gimmick, if it’s anyone else it’s a “feature.” Hi-red graphics are a gimmick to get people to buy games with shitty game play, but the fan boys don’t admit to the gimmicks on their console, noooo, only Nintendo has gimmicks.
I just hate stupid people.
Indeed…
the PS2 only won the war back then because of a gimmick that has nothing to do with games…
Just like the Xbox Done is doing now with their “All in One Media Gimmicks” that has nothing to do with gaming whatsoever…
i too have 1001 reasons why Nintendo is awesome … but just 1 complaint … nobody is buying it.
When nobody is sold on my favorite company, i don’t have to know anything to know they’re doing something terribly wrong. You don’t have to look at the bright side, you don’t need statistics, you don’t need personal opinions, you don’t need forecasts and charts and marketing and commercials and fan boys and more games and more time … u need to …
Toss it … like the Virtual Boy … just toss it … only after it was tossed did the Gameboy Color come … yup … short time later … you don’t like black and white and you still love your Gameboy? … tossing out the VB gave us GBC … thank you! … thank you for tossing out the VB!! … cause GBC was awesome.
WiiU? … toss it … throw it out … you can do better … you made the controller smaller with the Wii … why is the WiiU’s controller the size of my coffee table? … toss it … throw it away, i already own an iPad … throw it into the trash!! … i got more Virtual Console on my Wii … get rid of it, you failed … give me a real Nintendo console.
I respectively disagree. I can’t imagine gaming without the game pad. I do 75% of my gaming remotely on the game pad. I’ll take the WiiU somewhere and play on the pad, never needing a TV. The gamepad has to stay, it’s amazing and convenient.
WiiU is not selling for the simple reason that Nintendo launched it without any 1st party support, wasted their one year lead by letting the WiiU rot to hell and now everyone has moved on. Do you really think a stronger system would be selling? No. It would not. It doesn’t matter what kind of machine Nintendo launched. No games = people don’t care. No sales.
Nintendo REPEATED their mistake with the 3DS, but on a bigger, unrecoverable scale. People can bash the hardware all they want. The WiiU went into a coma because Nintendo put all the responsibility to develop games on Ubisoft. Now third parties are like, “Nintendo lazy ass. If you’re not supporting WiiU, fuck off, we’re leaving.”
Nintendo is coming out with games way too late. Now no one gives a shit and the newness of a new console, the hype of an HD Nintendo machine has worn off. It has nothing to do with the power of the console or the game pad. The gamepad was an ingenious idea, and Nintendo wasted it.
HD large screen at 60 FPS, it took me almost a month before I got use to the screen enough I could look at for more than a few minutes without getting dizzy.
I don’t think so. I think the Wii U is plagued with the reputation of the Wii. Namely, underpowered console with no Third party games. Also the console market is saturated, in a saturated console market, Nintendo had to offer incentives to buy a new console which means more bang for your dollar. The Wii U is underpowered and has no games.
In addition to that, the Virtual Boy was released unfinished to the public.
@Nintendo is my Blood, nintendo had to make that failure so what we got was a better version of the virtual boy, just not a total failure. in order to succeed, you must fail.
IDK what the hell you’re thinking that Wii U is an equivalent to Virtual Boy unless you’re just an Xbot/PS fanboy trolling over the console fact that both of those “powerful” consoles have as much games at launch as Wii U did combined and did nothing but copycat the fuck out of the competition over all ala lack of gaming originality where Nintendo is proven to thrive best in the field.
At least the Virtual Boy is more of a famous and collectable novelty than your dumbass flawed NSA Kinect 1.0 & 2.0. which will be a deader reference than NeoGeo in the future.
Try trolling that now asswipe. B/ I’ll be waiting for your weakass and typical cliché response only an 11 year old Halo fanboy can make.
You’re touching on a couple good points … Mainly the WiiU and the Virtual Boy you mentioned.
I owned the Virtual Boy … I loved it and so did the nintendo fans at the time … i might be the only nintendo fan who still stands by his Virtual Boy and makes excuses for the Virtual Boy however.
The WiiU? … i got one … currently i’m playing Unepic and it’s great. Sometimes i forget i’m holding a gamepad, i’m so focused on the game.
I agree, the marketing is one of the biggest things they have faild at this far with the Wii U, I hope they step it up. Though, with Iwata admitting he misread the market, maybe they’ll try another way!
He’ll send the entire Ninja league…
Commander, you missed the entire troll war in the ‘NINTENDO TO UNVEIL ITS APPROACH TO MOBILE DEVELOPMENT ON THURSDAY?’ news article…
Indeed…
I was recharging my energy…
Oh well, I’m sure the warriors did alright without me…
Let’s hope Donkey Kong, Bayo, Hyrule Warriors, Kart 8 and Smash U all have an EXTENSIVE amount of advertising.
i doubt Hyrule warriors will change something(i may be wrong)
See Iwata! I think this guy has better eyesight than you are, president! =,=
Cross gaming chat!!! Fuck Disney Infinity Toy Box Wii U is sooooo stupid without the fucking chat!!! Fix this too!
Yay! Its the famous gay faggot!
that’s actually true. Though, I only play with friends, so through skype, it’s not a problem.
A blog from some nobody Nintendo fanboy developer is supposed to be “news” now? There IS something wrong with Nintendo, and it happened years ago. When they sold Rare and the rest of 2nd party western developers that they had. When they put the one western studio they have left (Retro) to work on another baby 2D game (donkey kong). Nintendo used to be a more diversified company back in the day that made all sorts of different types of games. Now all it caters to are babies. And babies will mention maybe one or two non baby games from Nintendo a year? Who plays one or two games a year? Only casuals and babies do. Nintendo should had created new studios years ago, before the Wii U launched, they wouldn’t have this drought of games that they have now. But the babies in denial will continue to praise Nintendo as they can do no wrong. All hail Nintendo and their one dimensional baby games. What 3rd party support does the Wii U have, none, but the Wii U is still good according to those babies who are happy with their few baby games. All I read here every day is baby game A, baby game B, who cares about those baby games, only babies do.
Learn your game history, boy. Nintendo also gave DK to Rare (who you praised). Most of the important Rare staff moved to Retro, anyway, so Nintendo lost nothing by selling Rare. In fact they made the right choice because they started to suck before they went to Microsoft and then their suckage grew at an exponential rate. Nintendo made the call perfectly. Anyway DK C Returns is more difficult than any “mature” games. CoD is a baby’s game, it punishes you for dying by taking you back to 15 seconds before you die. Easy, baby, crap. You’re caught up on visuals and art style. Clearly you have no palette and can’t tell good from bad.
Nice try though baby.
If you actually read the entire blog post, you will realise that he is in no way a ‘Nintendo fanboy developer’. He does critisise the Wii U and 3DS flaws, like lack of marketing. And reading your comment already lets me know that you are a blind Nintendo hater. ‘Only caters to babies’ you say. So what do you have to say about Resident Evil Revelations, Bayonetta 2, Zombi U, Smash Bros…. As the list grows longer, your credibility gets shorter. Only blind haters like you will say such a thing, and will refuse to see the other types of games Nintendo systems will provide. So I suggest you STFU before you embarrass yourself even more. :)
You’re obsessed with babies.
He’ll never make his statements any clearer if he keeps talking about babies
They need to be more aggressive marketers.
support this metroid clone for the wii u. it looks sweet.

GIVE THAT MAN A COOKIE TIN! HE KNOWS WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT AS WELL AS THAT GIBSON GUY AND FOR GOODNESS SAKE SOMONE FIRE PARTCHER!
Ah finally at last, someone with sense. The console is amazing and there is so much potential. It was just marketed very badly. Something Nintendo needs to work on.
yeah, marketing isn’t the only thing wrong with the wiiu. far from it.
marketing and lack of games are hurting the console, other than that there is nothing wrong with wii u.
I bought Wii U on Christmas but to be honest, Wii U lacks in available games.
This is the same thing I have been saying forever now. But Nintendo Fanboys are blind to it and cant see Nintendo has issues. Even when Iwata admitted to fucking up, they all say its okay Iwata your doing a great job lol. The Wii U as a system is great (Just needs Party Chat)
The Wii U launched in an over saturated console market. To succeed in an a over saturated console environment the company must offer more for less. The Wii U is underpowered and had few games. The Gamepad itself was not enough to hide the fact that the Xbox 360 and PS3 are equally powerful with more games library and more new games arrived to them than the Wii U. Hence, more people bought an Xbox 360 or PS3 then Wii U. Also the new consoles from Xbox and PS offered more power. Nintendo’s failure was offering an underpowered console period. The Gamepad itself is awesome.
wii u is awesome, even though i play more on my 3ds than my wii u but i do go back to it. i recently went back to super metroid, btw wall jumping is easier with the control stick than with the d-pad, well at least for me.
