Japan: 3DS Sells 64k, Wii U Sells 13k

This week’s Media Create sales are now in from Japan. Mario Party: Island Tour is knocked off from the top spot by PlayStation Vita’s Hatsune Miku Project, but settles into second place and sells a further 78k units, equalling a 210k total. New Love Plus+ releases for the Japanese 3DS this week and enters the top 10 at number 7, selling just over 30k copies.

In terms of hardware sales, both the 3DS and Wii U sales are boosted considerably, possibly due to Japan’s rise in sale tax from 5 to 8 per cent coming into affect today. Nintendo’s handheld brings home 64k, while the Wii U shoots up a further 3k from last week, selling 13k. Once again, the 3DS is back to lead the pack at the top of the board.     Improvements all round. Some big, some small. But improvements nonetheless.

    It should also be noted that the increase in Japanese sales tax from 5% to 8% may have had a hand in these increases as people rushed to purchase things before prices increased.

      Also, the 3DXL had that MH limited edition. Usually when there’s a spike in 3DS’, it comes from a game or special edition. Nintendo knows how to market to the Japanese demographic when it comes to handhelds. lol

        I believe that’s probably not Japans only tax.

        When I lived in Canada, there were 2 different taxes applied at the point of sale: sales tax and something else (a province state tax I think), 5% and 8% respectively if I recall correctly, for a total of 12%. Still much less than 20%, but it’s possible Japan has a similar system with a second tax at the point of purchase, bringing it closer to our ridiculous 20%.

          But yeah, we don’t have it as bad as others in the Scandinavian countries. Brits had a bad enough time accepting the hike of an extra 2.5%, there would be considerable uproar if we hit 25% or more.

              Was only joking though, but seriously, my stupid country has been going downhill now for 8 years ever since those damn conservatives took power…

              Sweden was one of the most calm, leading countries in the world but not they are just utter crap…

              Nazis all over the place, murders and crimes every day compared to 15 years ago when it was basically 2-3 murders a year or none at all…

              They have fallen so behind the enviromental aspect that it just makes me angry…

                    Don’t worry, in my country (Honduras), your numbers are still ideal for us. Here, we have about 20 murders a day and the ocassional massacre :S

      its good to see the PS Vita getting love in Japan. Anybody who owns one knows that what is being said about it having no games is a complete myth. Vita has some of the best portable JRPG’s ever made and being able to play Rayman Legends which is console quality is a god sent. Good to see 3ds still going strong after all this time as we’ll.

      E3 2014… Iwata takes the stage and announces Zelda U has been pushed back to 2016 the earliest and that it will come out on the successor console to the Wii U. Steel Diver U is then announced as the big holiday AAA title for 2015 followed by a “Please Understand” speech. …::sigh:: sadly this is the cycle of Nintendo. Loving Nintendo is like loving a Down Syndrome husband,, you love him to death but deep down inside you know he is never going to be able to achieve erection for you…..

    Any known reason for the wiiu to rise? There’s no new game! Maybe the ps4 fever went down due to it’s lack of japan-friendly games…

      I’m sure the Wii U increase has to do with the soon to be released Mario Kart 8, numbers should be jumping pretty decently in the weeks to come :)

    Mighty PS4 has been raping WiiKU week by week since launch, by the end of the year ps4 will have hit the 10 million mark and WiiKU barely scraping the 8 million mark

      3ds is destroying everything ur point? Who cares, its good for sony no doubt but stop trying to make sales into this pretend little war that has no winners. U get nothing if sony sales, the most and u get nothing if nintendo sold the most. Ps4 isn’t even the fastest selling console ps2 and wii are still the fastest( one point the wii sold 5 million in a single month)

      Yes, but unfortunately still a portable with a small library of games, considering the years he already is on the market, selling at the level this week for example, Sony is taking up to “luck”.

        Yeah, it does suck that it’s taking up to luck but maybe with the recent sales of the PSV, maybe more developers will actually see the hidden potential of that beast.

        Small library? Not really. I have more Vita games than 3DS games, honestly. Just because there aren’t many games that appeal to -you-, doesn’t mean it doesn’t have many games in general.

        It has a large library of games. Two years and hundreds of titles. It all comes down to whether or not an individual would want to play them.

        The Vita sales in Japan have been pretty steady and good over the past year. The rest of the world – well, that’s a different story (…. crap).

            Pretty much. It sucks though. Wii U has a pretty good library of games on it and it could get better if more people supported it, including the Japanese public – especially since it’s a Japanese product. PS4 just started, not off to a great start, but we’ll see how that ends up.

    The PS4 is having one of the worst launches in the history of Japan, until the PSVita sold more in the beginning (currently is selling more).

    What happened with Metal Gear Solid v: Ground Zeroes? the game is selling under Metal Gear standards.

          I don’t think the 3DS sold more than 6 million units in a mere 3.5 months. Wait, actually, I’m pretty sure about that.
          Just because the 3DS is selling better in Japan, doesn’t mean that’s how it is in the rest of the world too. Besides, the PS4 is experiencing a huge shortage in Europe. Might sound like damage controlling to you, but I live in Germany and I can assure you that the PS4 is nowhere to be found. It’s been incredibly hard to get your hands on one if you didn’t preorder it months before the release. Unless you’re ready to pay hundreds of Euros more than its original price. People have been (successfully) selling PS4s for 800€+ on ebay. That’s more than $1000. There was a launch event here in Berlin one day prior the European release, and hundreds, hell, probably even thousands of people showed up and people waited hours and hours in line. Even if it was promised that they had a PS4 for everyone, it seemed like Sony themselves were quite overwhelmed with the amount of people showing up, considering that they were out of consoles before many of the people got one.
          You see, a launch like the PS4 had was pretty much never seen before. And those sales were achieved with barely any games out. So maybe you shouldn’t be too sure of the 3DS outselling the PS4 just now. This is only the beginning.

            yes, the 3ds has been out a lot longer than the ps4. But don’t you think the momentum would have died down by now? The 3ds is handing Sony their asses.

            that being said, who really cares who is “winning” (or whatever you wanna call it) the console war? Why do we even want a console war? Its pointless drivel. If you love playing games thenplay what makes you happy without turning into a console elitist fanboy.

              I partake in the console war stuff for the fun of it with no real malice 90% of the time. I pity those that take it too seriously and talk trash to others that don’t own or don’t want to own their favorite console. To each their own, though.

    It’s nice to see the Wii U sales rise regardless of why they have or not. Is it the sales tax? Perhaps. Or it could mean the steady climb for Wii U sales in Japan. Who knows for sure?

    PS4 sales are down due to a global shortage of manufacturing the PS4. But let’s nots facts get in the way of a good trolling…..

        PS4 has been tracking over 100K units behind the Wii U in Japan. Its sales number have been going down week after week, faster than the Wii U did after launch. And the Wii U’s sales numbers recently have been increasing, so it is unlikely the PS4 will continue to outsell the Wii U currently, nor will it outsell it in the country at all.

    If the shortage of ps4s on sale continues with the Wii U rising in sales every month, it could very well outsell the ps4 this year. Or at least outsell it for half, if not most, of the year. Is this a bad thing for Sony? Not really. It isn’t like Sony will be forced out of the video game market if it doesn’t outsell Nintendo. If anything, Sony should be more concerned about what’s going on within their company then without. In the end, Sony will most likely pick itself back up eventually… unless their financial problems are worse than I know. Personally, it’d be nice if Wii U outsells the ps4 at some point this year. Not like it’ll stop the rabid ps4 & xb1 fanboys from calling the Wii U weak, etc etc, anyway. Good thing I’m waiting for 2 certain games to come to ps4 before I get one, so I don’t have to deal with the stress of always falling short of getting a ps4 because my area ran out of stock.

    Ps4 will never catch up to the 3ds and the wii u will sell more in the long run. Ps4 will be 400 til 2016
