Here’s What You Need to Know About Hyrule Warriors

Nintendo Europe has provided a nice roundup of what gamers can expect when Hyrule Warriors launches on the Wii U. The game has yet to receive a western release date, but is due to be released in Japan on August 14th.

Hyrule Warriors, the imaginative upcoming game for the Wii U console, combines the action-packed game play of Tecmo Koei’s Dynasty Warriors series with the iconic characters and worlds from The Legend of Zelda series. In addition to the focused action game play of leading one soldier against a massive horde of enemies, the Dynasty Warriors series is also known for its epic storyline. In this game, players control Link as he faces a powerful new enemy – the evil sorceress Cia – and her army to rescue the captive Princess Zelda. For the first time ever, Princess Zelda’s loyal Hyrulean Captain Impa makes her debut as a playable character. Impa equips a huge sword and can perform powerful combos to defeat enemies. Many other surprising playable characters make appearances in Hyrule Warriors, and each playable character will have signature weapons and action animations.

The first stage of the game takes place in Hyrule Field, a location that will be very familiar to fans of The Legend of Zelda series. The game-play structure of most of the stages bears a close resemblance to the Dynasty Warrior games, so Hyrule Warriors is a game that can truly be enjoyed by fans of both The Legend of Zelda and the Dynasty Warrior series. Players must defend or reclaim areas by fighting against hordes of enemies and using different types of flashy and powerful moves. Players will encounter new enemies such as Sorceress Cia, but some familiar enemies like Bokoblins and Lizalfos from The Legend of Zelda series will also appear in the game.

Thanks, Kyle

    1. What do you expect, Raph? You realize that Hyrule Warriors is developed (and published in Japan) by Tecmo-Koei.

  1. I am so excited for this game! Does anyone know how you play as Impa? Is she a character that you can only play as in multiplayer, or can you switch between her and Link in single player mode?

    1. based on what we know, 100% sure the game’s structure will be just like the usual warriors- games If you haven’t played Warriors before, generally if the story mode is based on factions/orientations, like Good and Evil or lets say Heroes and Villains, etc, the characters are fixed for each mission/map generally 1 character but sometimes (if the roster/history depth allow it) could be a small group say you can pick between 3 chars for said mission, — Now there’s the posibility (unlikely, but it has been done in past Warriors games) that there’s a story mode for each character (the more important ones), but like i said that seems unlikely for HW, anyway you can just pick anyone you want on any map you want in free mode.

Im expecting at least 20 playable characters so go figure ^^

      1. Thanks! I’ve never played a Warriors game before, so I was wondering how it would work. It sounds like a pretty good way of working it out, that way players won’t have to be constantly switching between characters just to get through a level.

Do you really think there’s going to be that many? It would be so cool if there were!

Once you unlock characters for playable, you can use them in past stages whether they were part of that battle in the canon or not. In fact, sometimes the stages’ dialogue change when you use a character that wasn’t originally in the battle. Especially if that character has a connection with one of the enemies/allies on the stage’s field.

  2. Lets see how many people buy this game and not opt to go watch it on YouTube play through and forget to buy it. I’m buying this day one it releases in the UK I just need a release date. The Wii U community does not support third party games hence the reason why ubisoft has gone for a while. Hopefully they come back along with warner bros. EA and rockstar games. One can hope.

    1. I didn’t care for it much at first, but wow, I think I could really use a game like this! I’m aiming to buy day 1, but by January 2015 at the latest.

  3. I was initially worried about the quality of this game from the debut of it, but the recent updates we’ve had have definitely put my doubts to rest. I like the majority of the people commenting here will be picking this up on day one.

    1. I felt the same way. It looked to me like Link was just being shoved into a game because of his celebrity status. But, I’m beginning to feel more and more positive about this game. The developers are making a work of art! I will get this sooner than later.

  4. Is that artwork of hyrule official for this game, or fan art? If it’s official, it seems that this game is a prequel to skyward sword.

    1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

It can’t be a prequel to Skyward Sword. There was no Zelda til Skyward Sword’s present. The Hyrule Kingdom wasn’t even founded til sometime after the events of Skyward Sword. If this art is official & it’s of Skyloft, I think there might be time travel of some kind involved in the game.

      1. The manga at the end of Hyrule Historia is considered canon and it’s about the very first Link who fought in the war with the Goddess Hylia. The First Link wore a red scarf/cape, this one wears a blue one. It might be the same Link with a slightly different design.

        1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

Doubtful this game is of the first Link since Zelda is getting kidnapped, who didn’t exist til centuries later as Hylia was reincarnated as Zelda, and the Kingdom of Hyrule wasn’t founded til sometime after Skyward Sword. Link’s outfit is more than likely slightly modeled after a Dynasty Warrior’s character’s outfit who also wore a scarf as part of his battlegear. Like Yukimura Sanada of Samurai Warriors, this character is the mascot of Dynasty Warriors.

  5. It appears thet the logo at the top of the article is the official european logo for the game.

Though I wonder what the american logo will look like…

  6. Game is looking great, can’t wait to play it! This kind of spin-off game is great for telling all the wars in the Zelda story, without having to use the main titles for it!

    1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

Unless they release DLC later on that has stages taking place during those wars of the main Zelda series, I doubt it will focus on the wars of the Zelda games & have it’s own original war. Just have to wait & see, though. Who knows. Maybe the 1st chapter ends with Shia using time travel to escape to a future where no one knows her to cause more mischief, & she just so happens to jump time periods at the end of each chapter with someone, most likely Link & Impa, chasing her throughout time to stop her, coming across multiple Links in the process.

  7. I am so pumped for this game. It looks incredible and the fact that it is two player is great! I can’t wait to play as Link and Impa and try to take on hordes of Bokoblins and Lizalfos. Hopefully the game has some pretty intense actions sequences as well.

We don’t know for sure. Warriors Orochi 3 Hyper had online play even though it was just two players at a time.

  8. This game just keeps getting better. I can’t wait to pick it up, and I love the logo. May just have to get Warriors Orochi 3 Hyper for Wii U if I like this one.

  9. Not buying this. I love zelda games but I can’t stand the koei warrior games, they’re so generic and repetitive. At least this one’s gonna have a nice zelda look I guess.

  10. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

If we get Ocarina of Time Link, the Hero of Time, as a freaking time traveler, I’ll… Eeee! My favorite Link traveling through time & bringing new meaning to his title of Hero of Time would be a dream come true. Anyway, I can’t wait for this game regardless of who’s playable.

  11. SHIA. The antagonist’s name is SHIA. I don’t know who keep doing the incorrect translation as Cia. I’ve heard people do Chie too. Her name properly translated is Shia.

    1. Or the name is Cia everywhere bar Japan. Translated or not it seems she is called Cia here. Like you’re called a merde odieux in France.
