Nintendo UK Says Smash Bros Wii U NFC Functionality Hasn’t Been Confirmed

You may remember that Nintendo of France managing director Stephan Bole recently told French publication Le Figaro that Super Smash Bros for Wii U will feature NFC functionality. Well, CVG reached out to Nintendo UK to see whether this was indeed true. Nintendo UK said that while Satoru Iwata said that Nintendo would release character figurines with built-in NFC functionality for certain titles, Super Smash Bros has yet to be confirmed as one of them. So no doubt we will get the official announcement at E3 next month.

“On 8th May 2014, Mr Iwata announced the decision for Nintendo to release character figurines with built-in NFC functionality that are compatible with video games starting from this year-end sales season. There has, however, not been any specific announcements regarding which software titles for Nintendo platforms will use this functionality. We have no other announcements to make at this time.”

  1. Does anyone know what NFC can and can’t do ? it’s the most expensive component in the entire WiiU to make, and yet only skylanders use it to.. scan toys. can it do something more apart scanning some figurines?

Scan credit cards…scan phones? That’s really all it can do I think. All it does is make it so you don’t have to input a code, which isn’t even a problem on Wii U since you have a touchscreen.

It was a pretty useless feature to add IMO.

    2. Uhh hello! Pokemon uses it two because i love pokemon! i get two put my pickachu on the gamepad and it apears in the game! ITS SO COOL! I cant wate fore nintendo too embraise the NfC tecknolgoy because it is reely cool and i love it! :)

      1. but it really seems to be not worth for the price it cost to make. i was hoping NFC can somehow.. scan a hand or something ? like movements. to introduce some new ways to control or whatever… but if all it does is scan toys and figurines then it’s nothing very exciting. for example 3ds already could scan cards on kingdom hearts, kid icarus etc. i spent long time scanning stuff from kid icarus. and you could already do it just with the camera.

It will make Nintendo lots and lots of money, though. I’m surprised, most of all, that Nintendo is only just getting started with it. If I were them, I would have busted the NFC figurines at the Wii U’s launch!

            1. Yeah if they start utilizing it I’d probably try it out. It could definitely make games more interesting. Make the toys do even more stuff, that’s what they need to do.

  2. the gamepad gimmick failed soo they need nfc to convince kids to buy their console. kids alredy have 3ds, dsi, gameboys, tablets or emulator sources. these gimmicks wont save wii u. atleast there’s an xbox one without kinnect for $400.

    1. man, everything is a gimmick, your beloved xbox -console that i read, you do not own-, the ps4, the smartphones, the Wii U, even your life, everything is a gimmick.

    2. lack of key multiplats is whats causing the wii u to fail, and that stems from lack of power. The Gamepad is great, developers love it, consumers love it.

    3. What games will they get besides cod? Titanfall? Ha, they’re the same shit. They’ll buy the Wii u for the quality games.

      1. Hey! Even tho I’m all for putting that little bitch sasori in (her) place, watch it with the racial statements OK.

    4. Kinect epically failed hard last gen and still failed to gain whatever wetdream appeal it tried to accomplished? Why else would you think Microsoft took so long to launch a Kinect-less Xbox One at $400, something important that the majority of fans have asked for since day one of its reveal?

Look at Kinect Sports 2? It blew hard and no developer wants to deal with it which is why Microsoft is ditching it again.

Developers are utilizing Gamepad, 3DS’s 3D screen, touchscreen, Wii Remote motion controls and so forth and that’s fact. Even Move had little more developer and consumer appeal than Kinect. That POS camera is a complete waste just like Zune was.

Get your fandork gorilla head out of your ass and stop living in a Stockholm Syndrome style of defending such DOA POS spy toy of NSA.

          1. Cool it with the racist remark dude. I know sasori is a huge trolling duche, but its the individual not the race making the stupid comments.

          2. Dude, even though Sasori is a major dumbass of humanity, do not use any vocal racial garbage around here.

Racism is never cool and never accepted anywhere for any reason.

        1. We’re not. In fact, the ONLY thing we’re about you for is that your brokeback gorilla ass ain’t permanently “expired” yet and the day that happens, is the day I dance my ass off all week. No regrets.

  3. What about an entire inventory of weapons for Zelda as an example? Trainable or personalized characters? Special in game privledges? Granted some of these things are faddish, but in a social network, an NFC figure could set players apart into a more competetive arena, thus allowing for an advantage, class, or simply clout.

A weapons inventory would be nice. End the days of weapons transfers with the touch of a button, make the hero actually pull his weapon from something that costs a little time. That could add to the challenge and keep up some realism. It could force the use of stealth or better preparation. Unless you just pause the game, equip, and unpause. Then it would be senseless to use NFC except for the trophyism of humankind.

  4. NFC reads data stored, too. I have had Skylanders since it first came out. At that time, the website used the “Portal” to put your Skylanders into their online game. Any hats, all the experience and the level ups I had was also uploaded from the toy. So, it’s not as limited as a bar, QR, or other code scanner.

  5. have they even thought about letting you use nfc credit cards or mobile wallets like google wallet or isis mobile wallet? i’m hoping for these features on the gamepad.

  6. Nah fuck that dirty lil inbred nig ger his father is his uncle his mother sucked mad cock to buy his wii u and he neglects it that lil fuckers needs to bite a bulletbill and end his pathetic Internet existence he has no real friends hes blinded by the so called xbox aaa market yet he only owns Nintendo handhelds and consoles he’s upset about it I’m surprised he doesn’t spend his days walking around beating up kids half his size because they like Pokemon fucking nig ger
