Miyamoto Says They Don’t Want To Just Hire People Who Love Nintendo

Mr Miyamoto has given an insight into how the recruitment system works at Nintendo headquarters. Miyamoto says that the company does’t want recruits to consist of long-term dedicated Nintendo fans. He says that it’s good to have a mix of those that love Nintendo and those that are on the fence. He says it’s his job to help them drift somewhere in between.

“It’s challenging if you bring in people who love Nintendo too much, because they tend to overthink things and have very specific opinions, and they tend to lack a little in objectivity. So we seem to hire a mix of people and some are people who love Nintendo and some are people who kind of think more ironically at Nintendo. It’s partially my job to kind of help them all drift more towards the middle.”

          1. Well I don’t want to work at Nintendo, but perhaps a co-operation wouldn’t be a bad idea at all. GameFreak and Retro Studios are great examples of co-operating companies: they all do whatever they want and Nintendo takes all the publishing responsibilities. :)

    1. easy way to boost yourself up over other people who apply. buy an xbox one and a ps4 and a gaming pc. play all the games that seem interesting or accliamed. apply for a job. nintendo will almost never hire someone who is nintendo exclusive. true fact.

      1. Playing games can help but that’s a very small portion see if you want to get in the game development jobs game art and game design programming you need a back ground a ver good back ground. These are things im doing to prepare my self looking in to game developing programs buying the program for right now I’m using game maker and I’ve bought books so I can learn the program inside and out , write your ideas down so you never forget them, after game maker I plan to move on to the Unity Engine, because game maker focuses on 2d style of games more then 3D but that’s were The Unity Engine comes in. Find College that is a good fit for the major your going into either it be game art or the programming side of it and to get that knowledge I will be attending Full Sail also learning Japanese Will Boost your chances with Nintendo because their main game developing studios are in Japan. but ya that’s what I’m doing an I know if your a driven Person Anything is possible!

      2. In a particular way, they’re saying its unwise to blindly favor just one brand of any gaming system and bash others without any rational explanation or reason.

This is something that dumbass Sasori desperately must learn about gaming. Enjoy each system for what it’s worth not just one because you have the complete stupid nerve to use that ego to look like a better man when you’re not even halfway close to that.

        1. bringing sasori into this was unnecessary. you might as well point fingers at the people here who say “nintendo will dominate everyone,” “only nintendo games are great, i would never play *insert non-nintendo game here*,” and “nintendo will unveil its master plan soon and everyone will bow down to our god”. do you think nintendo would want to hire any of those idiots?

    2. Mine too :-) i explore all companies games though so I see what everyone is enjoying in today’s video games :-)

  1. I read this earlier as well.

I too would like to work for them but I’ve not got any designing of programming experience. I have always wanted to learn to program.

    1. Sometimes I wouldn’t agree with you but now I do… Fanboys would ruin Nintendo, someone who knows what they are doing in the gaming industry is the way to go.

That’s good. People who haven’t fallen for Nintendo’s “spell” will be more objective and won’t cater to Nintendo’s past. They’ll bring to the table what Nintendo hasn’t.

I wouldn’t want to work for them. If anything, I would love to build a highly successful 3rd party studio and maybe partner with Nitnendo down the road.

      1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

Obviously you didn’t read it because otherwise you would have understood my comment…

  5. Except this can sometimes be annoying when the employees at Nintendo don’t have ANY knowledge of Nintendo’s past or present. I’m sick of the consumer service representatives not knowing anything unless it’s in their computers. Some common knowledge would be appreciated.

Working at Nintendo is something I’ll never be able to do, due to my lack of education. So I’ll just have to continue loving Nintendo from afar.

  6. Anyone know the best major to go into if I wanted to work with any gaming company. Graphic Design? Programming? Software Development?
I’ve made my own basic games before, but I’m unsure on what field/major is best. I know Nintendo doesn’t really hire that’s why I asked for an opinion based on all companies.
    Thanks guys and gals!!!! ^_^

    1. all the children here are assuming you have to get into hardware or software development to get hired by nintendo. that’s a terrible idea- almost all of their developers are japanese. you would end up working for an american game company. the absolute best way to get hired by ANY major company: get a business degree, get a lot of work experience in different companies while working up the corporate ladder, and then apply for a position that you “think” you are overqualified for. then you may get hired by nintendo of america. PR, finance, advertising, marketing, management, etc are what businesses need, and nintendo is no exception.

      1. I understand Nintendo is a Japanese company and have already readied myself to minor in Japanese if I was to take that route. My question was applying to all video game companies, however; and not only Nintendo. I do thank you for your answer regarding how to get a job at Nintendo of America, but even if it’s not Nintendo I still want to make games, and wanted to know the best major. Thanks for your response!!!

  7. Back on topic. It’s good to see they don’t hire just anyone. Knowing how a competitors consumer thinks and wants is a good business strategy. I do agree with what someone said above about having some history of Nintendo, it’s sad to work with a company and not get a “hey, listen!” reference. -.-

  8. well I would like to work on the hardware design department I like Nintendo but I will be so vocal on the direction their should go. Again not building a PC like console but something more daring but not too risky as well.I think Nintendo should invest on Networking system and their eshop.

  9. This goes to show that when working for any body of the gaming industry except EA, you have to abandon that kind of “love” for an industry in order to shift appropriate focus and agendas on making games work and fun.

I think Miyamoto is wise in way to say that sometimes hiring people who are like in love with a company and product is unhealthy for themselves and the company’s image. In the end of the day of profession, the job comes first.
