Nintendo Wins Patent Case Involving Wii System

On Dec. 22, Nintendo won a patent case in a federal court in Seattle. Judge Robert S. Lasnik found that Nintendo’s Wii system does not infringe two patents asserted against Nintendo by UltimatePointer, LLC. Judge Lasnik also found a number of UltimatePointer’s claims invalid, and decided, as a result of these decisions, that no trial is needed.

Judge Lasnik’s decision follows earlier decisions for Nintendo by Chief Judge Leonard Davis of the Eastern District of Texas, which occurred before the case was transferred to Seattle. Judge Davis similarly held that Nintendo did not infringe certain asserted claims and that others were invalid.

“We are very pleased with these decisions, which confirmed Nintendo’s position from the beginning – we do not, nor have we ever, infringed these patents,” said Richard Medway, Nintendo of America’s vice president and deputy general counsel. “The result in this case, once again, demonstrates that Nintendo will continue to vigorously defend its innovations against patent lawsuits, even if it must do so in multiple courts and commit significant resources to defend itself. Nintendo continues to support reform efforts to reduce the unnecessary and inefficient burden patent cases like this one place on technology companies in the United States.”

    1. Actually, everyone messes with Nintendo, they just lose. It’s a shame Nintendo has to continue to waste money on these frivolous lawsuits.

  1. It is not surprise that Nintendo of all is one of the companies that go and put some pressure to the Washington dude to give a fuck and update the patent laws so they can put some effort in making their games and less in dealing with patent trolls.

            1. You’re thinking about it too hard. I mean Sony and Nintendo would be able to make an amazing console with amazing games if they were a team.

              1. Eternal Ridley Prime

Bad idea since Sony is getting hacked because of stuff like The Interview. If Sony & Nintendo had such a close relationship like that, Nintendo would be attacked just as another means to attack Sony.

          1. I don’t have regular access to internet for my Wii U though… I have to go somewhere else to usually get it connected and its not very often that I can. If you were to play with me on a Wii U game, it’d have to be sometime on a weekend. If I’m available, I’ll tell you. But until then, I guess just… Keep practicing. Lol. I still beat you in Mario Kart 8 btw. :P

                1. Nintendo Elite Commander Quadraxis

Bikes are faster than karts and I haven’t unlocked all parts either nor created my perfect kart…

                    1. Nintendo Elite Commander Quadraxis

1v1 the average kart racer has almost no chance unless he gets a red shell…

                      1. But when you and me raced, you had heavyweights. And they’re faster than the other characters. I was using average weight characters and they already have decent handling but the bike gives them better handling. If you’re gonna pick a heavyweight, then I would not recommend trying to get a top speed combination because it gives you not only terrible handling but also no acceleration whatsoever. If you get hit in a race, you’re screwed. I usually pick Rosalina on a bike because it’s the perfect combination of speed and handling.

                        1. Nintendo Elite Commander Quadraxis

I picked a middle weight one later, still not the same…

I’m sure I can play better once I find my preferred choice of kart someday but most who are good with bike chooses either Rosalina and Daisy, makes it boring to be honest…

Same in MKWii, everyone often chose that kong with glasses and a bike and they would even outspeed you even if you made boost…

                        2. Nintendo Elite Commander Quadraxis

Plus this hole flame boost thing there is in the game, it makes the game that much less fun…

If Mario Karts were like N64 and GCN without bikes, everything would be so much better…

                                1. Nintendo Elite Commander Quadraxis

No, MKWii is the worst MK in my opinion because of bikes…

                                  They ruined true competition…

                                2. Nintendo Elite Commander Quadraxis

Everytime I race other karts I often win 1v1 but vs bike, I almost always lose despite how good I am…

              1. I’d like too watch some of these cases where someone tries to sue Nintendo. But instead, all we get is judge Judy. (- _ -)

                1. Nothing wrong with that. Judge Judy destroys those people in the cases. They go home with no money AND their feelings hurt.
