Aonuma Says He Wants to Bring The Hyrule Warriors Boss Battles To Zelda Wii U

Those big boss battles that you encounter in Hyrule Warriors is one aspect that The Legend of Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma wants to replicate in the forthcoming Zelda title for the Wii U. Aonuma says he loves the fact that the encounters are not in enclosed spaces so he wants to bring that experience to the Wii U game.

One aspect of Hyrule Warriors that really left a big impression on me was how the big bosses can actually move across the map while you’re fighting them. For example, you can have a boss start by heading toward your stronghold and you’ll attack and then follow them. That’s something you don’t usually see in a Zelda game because bosses are usually in enclosed spaces so that kind of gameplay feels fresh to me. It also works really well in an expansive world, which is what we’re planning to do for the next Zelda game. It’s going to be a really open world so that’s the kind of gameplay we’d really like to incorporate.

Thanks, MasterPikachu6

  1. Aonuma says many things… he rarely delivers

In Twilight Princess he said there would be fear again in Zelda and it wouldn’t be safe to go out at night, you wouldn’t even be able to watch where you were going without a lamp

    1. just wait till we see the game, so far the open world is promising. So far aonuma has done good with LBW which is one of the best zelda games in a while.

      1. link between worlds was mediocre at best sorry but link to the past isnt as good as the praise it deserves Majoras mask blows that out of the water ! and im not trolling its basic facts
yes majoras mask is shorter but it has a more memorable feel to it
dont get me wrong ALBW was good but not enough to keep me hooked

        1. My ONLY problem with A Link Between Worlds is that it seemed to get over with too fast. I finished it so fast, and so long ago that I’m already starting to forget some things. But it was an awesome Zelda game. WAY better than the Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks (but that’s not fair, because it was the play control that ruined those games).

    2. Sorry but that game was still produced by Miyamoto meaning he didnt really have full control over that game. Skyward sword and a link between worlds was where he was the producer and the full head of those projects.

    1. its not a bad idea. Having a boss maybe similar to something like Nemesis would be cool, if did something like that, or something SOTC

    2. Ridley, the Angel of Death

Imagine coming across say King Dodongo in the middle of a field & it follows you throughout the huge field til you kill it. In fact, it can very well follow you into a different area entirely. Now tell me that isn’t something awesome. Whether the hardcore, fanatic Zelda fans like it or not, there were actually some pretty good things from Hyrule Warriors that could do wonders for the main series. Like free-roaming bosses!

  3. This upcoming Zelda game is shaping up to be quite the evolution for the series. Thanks Aonuma for making the wait even more difficult :)

    1. Lol thats what i hated in hyrule warriors. Oh dodongo opens his mouth let me throw a bomb, he’s down let’s attack now. Same with Ganon and the other big bosses. You can’t attack until they do something. The normal bosses was easier since you can still do damage to them regardless.

    2. Who needs waiting?
Cut grass, stock up Magic Power, use Super after activating magic, boom.
      Instant weak point.

All that comes after that is just knowing what attacks decrease its weak point gauge fastest with your chosen character, and using them right.

Of course, the battles in Zelda U won’t be that cut and dry, so we probably won’t need to rely on Magic to make them vulnerable.

  4. Oh no… Please no. Hyrule Warriors is an action spin-off, not a strategy and puzzle based game. Aonuma, if you’re going to do it, don’t make it a button masher

I think he simply meant a boss that you would battle in open field…

      I just hope it’s not every boss…

      1. Yeah that’s what I was thinking of. It’ll be ok to have the bosses be themselves but don’t make it beating them a hack and slash with repetition

  6. This sounds promising. Anyone play Jak & Daxter 3? The boss near the end where you’re driving around the desert chasing it down as it marches toward your town? I’m hoping they achieve something like that in this. Or fights like in Twilight Princess where you had the Chief Moblin riding boar-back and you had to chase him across Hyrule Field on Epona. I hope they do fights like that. That said, I also don’t want every dungeon to be “Oh! The Big Boss has escaped and now he’s running around the overworld! Chase him down and defeat him!”

Though, this does bring an interesting idea. Why have we not had a boss who progresses backward through the Dungeon and your job is to defeat him before he escapes his dungeon? That seems like something nice they could do… especially if they add ways to hinder progress, set up traps, etc.

That Chief Moblin fight was one of the best in TP imo. I’d love to see something like that return, especially since Epona is back.

  7. Maybe there will be field bosses where this mode comes in. Maybe you could get a rare material from a field boss that allows you to upgrade your items (like how you upgrade weapons in LOZ:SS) or it could even be quests implemented in this game that requires a field boss to be defeated. it doesn’t matter this game will be awesome either way.

  8. Knowing Nintendo they wouldn’t do it. Too much like right. Yet should do it to keep what little 3rd party interested. But Nintendo is too stubborn. They working on fusion probably as powerful as PS4 because they don’t think about the future of gaming. They always think about the present for some dumb reason. I hope they put GameCube features in Fusion since they were too dumb and stupid not to do that for Project Cafe.

    1. And yet here you are talking irrelevance of a shstem and not the game at hand. And BTW, PS4 being powerful? Gen 8 is merely a cosmetic jump instead of a huge leap like 7th gen and PS4 is in fact far from powerful since we’re still hearing many cocky studios making excuses of why some “amazing” 1080p/60FPS games hasn’t happened yet but Nintendo can pull it off on their own console without as much of a peep of complaint.

  10. Hmm. So they’re gonna bring stuff from hyrule warriors into the new one. I’m just having a feeling if this could be true or not.

If Lana, cia, wizzro, and Volga appear in the game. Their origins could be

Wizzro could be stuck in the ring but gave his alligence to the main villain (could be ganondorf)

Volga would be the human incarnation of volvagia ( you fight him and then him as volvagia)

Lana and cia have the same origin, one sorceress being splitted into two, one of light and one of dark. Lana might be link’s companion.

And a feeling I might doubt, multiplayer dungeons or co-op story. This is just a feeling that could be doubted.

  11. While this IS an interesting idea, there are times when being enclosed in a room for the boss battle is what adds to the excitement. Because you know you’re trapped, and that beating the boss is the only way out.

With that said, and on a different subject (but still about bosses). I always wondered in Zelda games, why does the door open (or the path gets revealed, key appears, or something is unlocked somehow) just because you defeated the boss? In reality, after the boss died, you’d still be having to search for an exit. Standing a chance of being there until you die. Yet in Zelda games, a magic portal appears that takes you to the outside. Ahh, video game logic.

  12. This is very interesting. The only thing I would want is to see Lana in the new Legend of Zelda. I really like her character and I would like to know more about her story.

    1. Cia would be a nice anti-hero too, her extended story from the Master Quest DLC made me like her even more. Too bad she had to die so soon after everything that happened in the game’s main story.

  14. Ridley, the Angel of Death

I see we have a few hardcore Zelda fans that think anything new is a bad thing for the entire series. They are the old people of the Zelda fanbase. “Noooooooooooo! Change is evil! Keep it away! *hisses & gets burned by the new idea* Hssssss!” lol Oh well. If they truly care about this series, they’ll get over it eventually. It’s not like he’s adding guns, automobiles, airships, & tanks into the series.

    1. Ridley, the Angel of Death

Bring on the free-roaming giant bosses! Hell! Let’s add a voice actor/actress to narrate the game at certain points!
