Popular online gaming publication Destructoid is reporting that Nintendo of America and Nintendo UK seem to be discontinuing the original Nintendo 3DS model which launched back in 2011. The site says that the handheld is near on impossible to purchase new in the United States or the UK. The Nintendo 3DS XL and the Nintendo 2DS are all readily available for purchase. Nintendo Japan recently phased out the Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo 3DS XL to make way for the newer New Nintendo 3DS and New Nintendo 3DS XL.

Was to be expected. I thought this would happen, and actually, I think the New 3DS units would replace the OLD 3DS units, to avoid consumer confusion.
I guess this means that we can soon expect a US based Nintendo direct video soon. Hopefully we well get some new game announcements to fallow the new system.

I wish they would’ve given us some idea of when to expect the New 3DS first. After all… isn’t the only real confirmation we have that it’s coming the fact that Nintendo of Japan said “The New 3DS won’t come to America or Europe until next year!”? Nintendo of America hasn’t even acknowledged that we’re getting it, but they’re still gonna discontinue the old one anyway. That’s nice. Thanks.
it was time for them to do that and im not upset they did that, they did the same with the fat ds. once n.america starts getting the ‘new’ 3ds/xl models they might discontinue the xl model. i do hope they (at least the xl) price them so its affordable cuz i plan on upgrading from old xl to ‘new’ xl.
the new regular is slightly larger than the old so i will have to try before i buy. better graphics on the smaller screen but hopefully not too small that my hands cramp.
now bring out the new one and price drop the old.
The New 3DS will probably come out in US and Europe when Majora’s Mask is available.
It would be nice if majoras mask has support for the newer 3DS (camera control, amiibo, first person) maybe better frame rate and performance

ugh, I much prefer the design of the original 3DS over the 3DS XL or the new 3DS and new 3DS XL. It has a certain elegance to it, with the sharp edges and stacked color scheme. The new models look cheap and tacky, especially the one with the swappable face plates. MS tried swappable faceplates with the Xbox 360, and they looked awful for the most part. Is it too much to ask for a handheld that looks like it belongs to an adult and not a child’s playskool toy?

Old news. They long have discontinued it since XL’s popularity peaked in its first year.
I’ll always regret not buying the blue colored 3DS (like the one it shows here) when it first launched. My girlfriend (now ex) got the blue one. So I bought the boring black one so we’d each have a different color. I’ll never make that mistake again.
