The Kingdom Hearts franchise will be busy celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2027 with the release of Kingdom Hearts 4 and it seems as though Disney has a lot of things it wants to do with the series. We already know a Kingdom Hearts animated series is in the works, but in a recent interview Disney’s director of games, Nana Gadd, said the following about the company’s plans:
“Even though Kingdom Hearts has been around for 25 years, there are so many things we want to do,” says Gadd. “The announcement of the animated series is truly just the first step.”
Thus, the beginning of the end has begun. Once Disney sees nothing but dollar signs, it’s over.
Beginning of the end he says as if that wasn’t kh2. Kh2 is the best in the series and also the beginning of the end. After that Square and Nomura saw dollar signs and created spin offs for every single device imaginable. Phone game, 3ds, psp, gba, ds, even squeezing a mediocre 2 hour demo and selling it as an actual game. And none of those spin offs have a story that makes any sense, whatever Nomura pulls out of a hat goes. Don’t worry about Disney turning this series into a cash grab that happened a long time ago.
Except each of those games between 2 & 3 were actually good and added significant story progression. They didn’t have half ass stories like 3 ended up having when Disney thru their greedy weight around. A Frozen story that basically says “fuck you! Go watch the movie because you don’t deserve an original story where Sora & the gang alter the story due to their presence.” Which repeated with PotC 2/3 & the end part of Tangled. They didn’t give two shits about the Pixar worlds & Hercules, though, for some reason. Disney turned KH3 into one big ad for Frozen, Tangled, & Disney World.
But it’s whatever. Hopefully I’ll be wrong & KH4 will actually do proper KH altered stories of Disney movies again as they actually learned & covertly admit they fucked up with micromanaging Nomura with the last KH entry. That man does great when Disney & Squeenix aren’t fucking with his vision.
If you’re familiar enough with Nomura’s kingdom hearts interviews old and new, you can deduce that Yozora was originally going to be part of Kingdom Hearts 1. Re:Mind DLC was finally the first time that we hear “I’ve been having these weird thoughts lately. Like is any of this for real or not” since the opening of KH1. Nomura has said when he conceived of the significance behind those words, it’s what saved Kingdom Hearts from being rejected.
So you can dislike the series post Kh2, the reason it exists is not “because Nomura saw the dollar signs”. 😁

I have an idea, remake the games mission from the collection so that every kingdom hearts game is playable on modern devices.

(I never noticed they removed Union from app stores til just now. How nice of Squeenix to remove that game 2 years ago knowing full well it’s important to KH4 which they were working on even then and not releasing a console version of the game. But fuck me, I guess, because I guess I shoulda played it back when I had the chance, too. I guess I better find a highlight reel of cutscenes before KH4 next year.)
There was also the new game, KH: Missing Link. They cancelled, but it would connect with KH4.
Lol now that KH has made them over a billion dollars, and fans are losing interest in their other IPs, they focus on KH.
