Nintendo Was The Number One Publisher On Metacritic In 2014

Metacritic scores seem to mean a lot nowadays so it’s great to hear that Nintendo was the number one video game publisher in 2014 according to Metascore. The company that was just behind the Kyoto based company was Ubisoft who scored as the second best publisher of 2014, followed by EA. Be sure to check out the Metacritic page to get a more detailed breakdown.

Shooting up three spots in our rankings to #1 among the large publishers, Nintendo is also the only one of the majors to finish the year with a “green” average Metascore—despite the fact that only 56% of its games received positive reviews from critics. (Basically, 2014 was not the most memorable of years in gaming history.) Nintendo’s performance is even more impressive given the fact that it released more unique titles (34) than any other publisher in 2014. The Wii U and 3DS maker saw its Metascore average increase by 2.7 points in last year (compared to the previous year) even though it didn’t have a single 2014 game score as highly as its 2013 leader, Super Mario 3D World. Nintendo was actually the only publisher last year with more than one game (with at least 7 reviews) to score in the 90+ range, with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Bayonetta 2 both hitting 91. In a reverse from 2013, the publisher’s Wii U games scored more highly than its 3DS releases. The average for the former was an impressive 81.3 (for 12 Wii U releases), while its 22 3DS games averaged just 73.9.

      1. It’s part of the game. The Jigglypuff user should have been skilled enough to use rest on Dedede without falling off of the cliff just in case Dedede takes too long with a screen KO.

If it isn’t a random event outside of the players’ controls, then it is fair game. Tripping wasn’t fair, stage hazards aren’t fair and the use of items are not fair in competitive matches, but screen KOs are totally fair. Plus, they add character to the game!

lmfao xD Thanks for this video! This reminds me exactly why Smash Bros is so fucking awesome even if you can’t play a character you would love to smash the hell out of others with! lmfao

    1. Sony fanboys excuses incoming: lol metacritc suck ass!!!!!! Not reliable source!
Sony fanboys: win annual metacritic :Damn sony kick ass in the 2014! Shit, Exclusives of sony are amazing and deserve the metacritic win!
      Suck hypocrites..

      1. Just curious, how many Nintendo exclusives were released in 2014, compared to Sony exclusive s in 2014. I know that 3DS got a good amount and Wii U got a good amount as well, starting from Mario Kart in May with DKC:TF, starting the year on a good note…

      2. How is Metacritic not a reliable source? It baffles me when people say this. Metacritic averages all the scores a game receives from all the respectable gaming publications the website can find.

If an “average score” isn’t reliable, then nothing is reliable. Metacritic is as reliable as it gets.

        1. Not the user scores. The user scores are just random people voting on games. Most of them trolls giving games zeros and ones..

          1. Mmm… I actually look at user scores more, but either way you have people fucking with the system. Critics are biased and play games they sometimes don’t enjoy just to review them. They can also be bribed.

Yes, user scores can have a few immature posters, but you get more consistent gameplay reviews from users. For example, people who underrate a game just purely because it was Ubisoft that published it, those are hurting the system, but I can weed those out.

      3. I’m a Nintendo fan, but i’m willing to admit that metacritic is full of trolls rating games zeros and ones. It’s honestly a shame they let just anyone cast their vote on Metacritic. I don’t trust the reviews their, even if Nintendo is number one.

      1. It was a pretty movie and well, Jeff Bridges, so I liked it. Plus, original actors? Comeon, cut it some slack. ;)

        1. Nintendo Elite Commander Quadraxis

It might be but it was seriously lackluster compared to the original, everything felt empty and shallow just like the overrated graphicwhoring games of today…

  1. Thankfully it wasn’t ALL Wii U games, or that number would be considerably lower. But thankfully, Nintendo produced games are of much higher quality than most…

        1. And luckily they haven’t. Otherwise, you’ll be hearing the same fucktard a over at Xbox and PS raving Nintendo making and launching broken games. Sonic is done and should retire already.

        2. I never said that Sonic Boom was handled by Nintendo. I said that if all Wii U games were counted, First Party, Second Party, Third Party Exclusives and Third Party Multi-Plats, released in 2014, then that Wii U average score would be much lower, thanks in part to the train wreck that is Sonic Boom-Rise Of Lyric…

Nintendo always makes wonderful games. Wonderful 101 even being a third party collaboration is a masterpiece. DK made me love platforming once again. Ubisoft had issues with unity lol, but they came in second; must be far cry 4. EA had a decent year, only nintendo games fully worked though.

    F=ma.

    1. Nintendo Elite Commander Quadraxis

      Indeed you must…

Now stop making silly pop music and make dark aetherian sanctuary music…

            1. I guess, I don’t really listen to her music anymore, I was going through a fangirl stage at the time. XP But still she has decent songs from time to time.

  4. Nintendo kicked butt this year. We already knew, but this is the icing on the cake. Hopefully they kick butt gain this year.
