Analytics Firm Expects Wii U To Fall Short Of 20 Million Global Units By 2019

Market intelligence firm Strategy Analytics has put together its latest report detailing the sales of current generation consoles. Strategy Analytics expects Sony’s PlayStation 4 to be in the lead selling around 80 million units by 2019. The firm also expects Microsoft’s Xbox One to sell around 57 million units. The news isn’t so good for the Wii U which Strategy Analytic expects to reach around 20 million global units by 2019.

Nintendo’s Wii U will trail a long way behind its rivals – it is looking more and more like Nintendo struck lucky with the original Wii, after failing with the GameCube and now the Wii U. Nintendo must decide if it is going to let the console business remain a two-way battle when the next generation comes along – I suspect it won’t but it will be sorely hurt by its latest experience.

    1. damn 80 million ps4 sold? That is a lot and maybe it will make it, I got my ps4 and wii u combo all set. Still by then I figure Nintendo would have their next console? I am still amazed people don’t see what potential the wii u has and it is really the games. Some of the best games I played in 2014 were on my wii u .

          1. Yes, It’s still a 3DS, so of course it can play DS games. The “new” 3DS is basically the same as the DSi. DSi was a DS with a few new hardware/software capabilities, and the “new” 3DS is a 3DS with a few extra buttons and power. It’s not a next generation handheld, it’s a placeholder for the real successor which will come later.

            1. Nintendo Elite Commander Quadraxis

On the next thread, it’s so amusing watching all the butthurt they themselves asked for…

              This is too easy…

    2. Nintendo’s next console will be released in 2017/2018, so 2019 is excessive. However, Ido think that the Wii U will get to 20 Million maybe 25 Million if Nintendo plays their cards extremely right, which unfortunately, I don’t see. So 20 Million is a safeish bet. I just hope that Nintendo increases their advertising efforts with their next home console, to get the system out there.
And for those that complain about how the Wii U is less powerful than the PS4 and Xbox One, here’s some food for thought. Remember those articles a while ago, in 2013, that stated that the PS4 and Xbox One may be 10 year consoles? Well in that small chance that they do, then the PS5 and the Next Xbox will release in 2023. Enough time for Nintendo to release their next console that is as powerful as the PS4/Xbox One in 2017/2018 and then their next console after that can be as powerful as the PS5/Next Xbox that tey will release in 2022/2023/2024. Then some people, and if some are here, then you know who you are, can stop complaining about that one aspect of Nintendo’s home consoles and continue complaining about other actual legitimate reasons to complain about Nintendo. However, that is in the extremely low likelyhood that they do go for 10 years…

      1. Saying a console is on a 10 year plan doesn’t mean a new one won’t come out during those 10 years. PS3 and PS2, for example, had the same deal – 10 year plans, but the successor still came out during those 10 years. The previous generation still sold, still had bundles, still had games coming out.

    3. He´s probably right. I see WiiU ending its commercial run with numbers similar to the Gamecube (22 millions). But every console this generation will sell worse than the previous iteration. I don´t see PS4 repeating the sucess of PS3, for example. The market is smaller and can´t count with the casual gamers anymore. It probably won´t reach 80 million pieces sold.

  1. I agree with Pachter. Why not sell it at $199 and make it competitive? Clearly their strategy of profiting on console sales is useless with such a comparatively miserable installed base.

    1. Hey man I figure whatever makes the money. Nintendo has money but to sell a console at a lost? Well I can say they probably made a lot of money off of amiibos and their own games but we all know atleast they are making money off each console. Nintendo’s money will stay strong.

        1. The 3DS cannot produce HD graphics, cannot hold a certain amount of mega or gigabytes to hold more to produce longer and more quality games, and it cannot provide anything even close to a Wii U experience. It can stay at 200, but the Wii U should drop to 250. It does say that Nintendo isn’t confident in the Wii U. Nintendo isn’t betting on selling their system at a lost because if so, it would kill the company because they know people don’t want to buy it.

          1. I think the 3DS’ portability make it worth as much as a WiiU. Then have wii U games more and the controller add ons. $200 Wii U next xmas
            will be good

  2. Who cares what they think just going to have to wait and see they at 10 million now and going I can’t wait for Nintendo to prove them wrong soon.

    1. They already have. They forgot that their 2015 gaming lineup is better than 2014 and will only get better. They’ll more likely hit 20 million within a year’s time or less than hit 20 million in 4 years. This is purely stupid bashing on the system’s unfortunate times.

    1. That doesn’t mean that the Wii U will be taken out of stores as soon as the new one he is out. Look at the PS3’s and 360’s, theirs still a few stores that sell them.

  3. The Wii U is in reality on pace to sell 24 million units by the end of 2017.
So yeah, bad… but better than what it says here.
Still… that would make it the worst selling Nintendo console.

      1. What gets me about the gamecube and the Wii u are the titles on both systems had very little third-party support. When you think about all the great games on that system, it makes me wonder where the gaming industry is and what the avaerage user wants to play nowadays. What happen to games making you have fun and enjoying them? Now everything is a race, competition, anything under 90 million is a failure.

        1. Soo…. you can’t enjoy CoD, FIFA, GTA, or any of those huge games because they aren’t fun?

I guess taste and opinion in gaming revolves around what YOU think it is. -_-

          1. Where did the poster even say those games weren’t fun or enjoyable. The posters concern is geniune to wonder about the gaming industry. I have concerns as well. The lost of AA games is a big concern. The risk of new games or new game ideas from all game developers is slowly becoming lost. Even with the new games, it still has that I’ve played it before feeling. I know every game cannot be completely knew, especially with how old gaming is and how long I’ve been gaming. The concern of every gamer is valid because it is there concern. I almost missed a whole generation due to gaming becoming stale to me. Thankful the Wii brought back that passion. Now I can enjoy not only Nintendo games but Sony and Microsoft games as well again. So why you enjoying trying to bash that poster, a little understanding may have been better.

            1. I guess you just so happened to miss this little part of his comment.

‘What happen to games making you have fun and enjoying them?’

Just because a game isn’t new doesn’t mean it can’t be enjoyable or fun to play. He’s clearly talking about different platforms because he brings up the ‘great’ games on both the Wii U and GCN and lack of 3rd party in them. Why bring up the great games in those 2 systems and think ill of the rest of the gaming industry? You know, anything thats not on Nintendos WiiU console. The games I brought up are just the top tier games in their respective category, which the latest entries in them are not on Nintendo consoles, and similar genre games to them aren’t either.

Stale? The Gaming industry has been stale since the beggining of gaming. Or have you forgotten how as soon as one games brings a new idea everyone and their mother over uses that idea to death. Yes, I do agree (With you) that the lost of mid-tier games is bad but those type of games aren’t gone, indie developers continuously bring new ideas to the table, you just have to give them a chance.

No I don’t enjoy “bashing” posters at all, that comment just irked me. If what you said is actually what the OP was trying to say then that’s another thing, but with the way he/she worded the comment I highly doubt it.

            1. Then don’t buy them! You can’t make a choice for others, you can’t force others to buy and support the bullshit you like because you feel a certain way. Trust me, I know exactly how you feel about these and to extent, I feel the same way, but theres a reason these games come out every year and sell every year.

Now to my original point, it doesn’t matter how long they take to come out, how much you hate them, or like them, people will find them fun. Regardless of what you think of it. That’s is just their preference in gaming.

          1. Which is a horrible excuse to avoid it, considering many of those same developer blow loads of cash on prettier graphics on more expensive consoles only to see those games fail to sell anywhere near as much as they want them to.

            1. You must also remember that the Nintendo generation was getting older, gaming became less important. Some may have needed an excuss to justify buying a gaming console. A dvd player provided this justification. Same thing applies today only its blueray and online mp games.

          2. If this is considered a legitimate reason why people didn’t buy the GameCube then there’s really no way we can blame the poor sales of Wii U entirely on Nintendo, if consumers really are stupid enough to think the format of the thing in which the game is stored is somehow relevant after you’ve popped it into the console then I guess we’ve found the reason for the deficit: Ridiculous biases.

            1. You misunderstand. It’s gets much bigger then just poor Gamecube sales. Nintendo underestimated the importance of a multi-capable console (and they still do) .

At that time the world was changing mediums, from VHS/CD to DVD. A DVD player was on eveyones shoping list, phones and mp3 players were also on the list. People were very hungry for technology. Owning a DVD player was exciting. Owning a Dvd burner though, that was the ticket. This happened to occur at the beginning of a new console generation. Two of the consoles used DVD drives and functioned both as a game console and DVD player. But more importantly these consoles provided a new use for Dvd burners…

You know what…I’m gonna stop here. If you need more let me know.

              1. Dummy, Netflix/YouTube/Hulu/iTunes exists. DVD is merely a convenience, not an assessity which BTW, has almost no use for it anymore. The digital age is blooming and physical media is slowly phasing out. By 2020, you can say goodbye to disc/DVDs soon enough.

  4. The thing is, the 3DS screens were never enough, it’s the fault of the 3DS if the Wii U does badly. They fkn didn’t continue the darn growing trend. GBA = 1 screen. DS = 2 screens. Why could they add an innovative third screen for the 3DS? If the had done that, people would not be calling Wii U cheap cuz it has 2 screens. They would actually be very different if you think about it.

    1. 3 screens for a handheld sounds like a terrible idea, and hardly “innovative”. Great, we can have TWO map screens now!

      1. 3 screens is a GREAT idea. You can use screen number three to see the front view of a character, where you normally see the back view on the first screen. AT THE SAME TIME, you can use your gameplay, and you can change a camera angle to what you want with your thired screen.

        1. Unless you cut down on the size of the screens, the handheld is going to be too big, and cutting down the screen size defeats the purpose since all you have to do is developed the game as if it had 3 screens from the get go. It just seems like a horrible idea, why not completely fuck it up and give it a 3rd nub while were at it.

          1. LOL you can’t make the excuse of the handheld being too big, because they could also make a special hook of some sort to attach on your belt, and you put the new haldheld on that hook (assuming the handheld will have some sort of loop so that it can attach to the hook). Problem solved.

              1. Yes it is…we gotta risk everything in our appearance to have a better gaming experience, and to be able to make Nintendo products more visible to those around us…Yes, that’s how our loyalty to Nintendo works.

                1. Its not really about appearance but accessibility, affordability, & performance. A handheld powering 3 different screens would use more juice than a handheld powering just one. We could get bigger batteries but that would bring up the price. If we were to keep the same size screens that would be an overkill, make it harder to use on the go and defeat the purpose of it being a PORTABLE console. Now if the screens stay the same size, then the screens would just have borders abstracting the screens, and without borders, we are back to making the 3 separate screens pointless. Its a pretty dumb idea dude. -_- and I hope Nintendo never tries anything similar to that.

                  1. You are insulting the power of technology! It’s been changing drastically these past years, and you don’t even KNOW if they would drastically increase how much the machine can handle 3 screens at once!

  5. Nintendo Elite Commander Quadraxis

As long as our empire makes profit by its own terms by their OWN games unlike the other 2 imbeciles that rely almost entirely on others’ games, we still win…

    1. I agree. As long as the Wii U turns a profit for Nintendo, in Hardware, Software and others, and with the Amiibo, I don’t see how it CAN’T turn a profit, then that’s all Nintendo as a company asks for. That and all the Nintendo people want, Iwata, Miyamoto, etc, is that those that do own a Wii U, have fun using it and have fun playing the games that they release for the system. Which personally, I do. Especially drawing on Miiverse…

  6. Okay, see what you think. There’s a screen on the wall, and then there’s a box that allows us to play games. I’m feeling that the novelty of it is slightly worn. Obviously, there’s a market and always will be, but for what? Where is the conquest now? Nintendo may remain a developer of great games on into the future, but as long as they can remain profitable, the race is meaningless. I’m expecting Nintendo to bring in the future, and it’s not going to be about a box that puts images on screens (or any variation of that theme either – VR being a case in point). I’m expecting them to move forward with something completely unexpected.

    1. I agree with you, but I just think your a little ahead of your time. T.V.’s are going to remain in peoples homes for many years to come. Eventually they will be replaced with new technology, but we are not that close to a game changing event…

  7. These Analysts need to learn their shit. Gamecube did NOT fail. It made a profit in the end, just wasn’t as much as Nintendo wanted. How else can you explain Nintendo having 30 years of pure profit prior to the Wii U launch? Guess the NES, SNES, N64 and GC were all failures then huh…As for Wii U IT IS MAKING A FUCKING PROFIT. Yes had a horrible start, will it “fail” in the end nope, Xbox One will in terms on profit since once again Microsoft’s Xbox Division will end up in the red, even if Wii U only made $1 in the end that’s still a “profit” and not a failure. It would be sad and pathetic, but still not a failure. And people are really forgetting that the return of Starfox will sell 20 million Wii U consoles!

    1. Agreed. A profit is a profit at the end of the day. No matter if it’s small or big, it’s still a profit. I count a failure, in terms of a video game console, is one that has a small library of games, sells an extremely tiny amount of units and is not well recieved, like the Virtual Boy. And the Wii U is not the Virtual Boy 2.0…

  8. The Wii U just can’t compete with the Xbone and Ps4. Nintendo was just one step behind Microsoft and Sony this generation. Hopefully they’ll learn from their mistakes and make a system that attracts all gamers, and actually have games on the console (at least a wider variety).

      1. MORON THE INDUSTRY MAKES NOTHING

WIIU MAKES 90% OF THE PROFITS NO GAME ON PS POOR OR BILLIONS IN OSS BOX WOULDNT RUN ON WIIU

If wiiu was 100000% more powerful than ps4 the games still wouldnt come you have no idea what you are on about

      2. Third parties DID put their games on the Wii U.

Those games flopped because THEY SUCKED TOO HORRIBLY TO SELL.
Who’s going to buy a whole new system for CoD Ghosts when 99% of the map packs and extras aren’t even available for that version?!

        1. They didn’t put “games”. They put lazy garbage at full price while snorting some crack thinking people on Nintendo side are as stupid as the other platforms to buy garbage. We surely did prove them wrong. They can talk shit all they like but one thing is for sure: at least Nintendo gamers are intelligent to identify CRAP from 2 miles away and those on the other two “consoles” which are purely PC try hards with NO EXCLUSIVES/INNOVATION are too busy serving white lies on a disc (Watchdogs/Destiny for example) during their graphic power pissing contest.

    1. Actually, the way I see it is that the Wii U is struggling to compete with almost all of the 3rd party developers who are too “business-minded” to invest in the Wii U and not XBox and PS4. 3rd party devs won’t make a game that will cost millions that cannot make a profit and Nintendo will NOT help lower the development costs for these developers. If I were to fairly compare and see which of the 3 is doing their job right without 3rd party devs in the picture, then it would seem that Nintendo is the only one that is dominating.

      1. Then its nintendos fault that their third party support sucks. Nintendo always digging their own graves. So stubborn.

        1. Why would a developer(Nintendo) help finance a game made by a competing developer(ubisoft, EA, etc)? You mean to say that Nintendo should cut their investment of making great 1st party games only to help a competing developer with their games that will also be sold to a competing console? Doesn’t make sense really.

          1. It makes sense coz then they would have 3rd party support and hence would sell more consoles instead of having only a dismal amount of their so called “great” 1st party titles.

            1. Well, I disagree with you but I don’t want to make this into a debate. I do agree with you that there is logic in what you are saying but with Nintendo’s case it is far more complicated than that. From what I understand, Nintendo has always lined themselves for the long-term profit goals rather than short-term and that’s probably why they are still in business. I do see Nintendo as the dominating gaming company despite Sony’s sales success and Xbox’s competitiveness in the gaming industry but with the lack of 3rd party support only really proves how threatening Nintendo is as a business competitor.

    2. And still make money while in Xbox division, hasn’t made a dime from the very beginning and Sony is still burning cash even with PS4 being a hotcake system. One step behind? lol Not exactly. Ever heard of “The Rabbit and the Turtle” metaphor? It’s taking shape right now and Nintendo is the turtle who will win in the end, not in this “race” of PC jerkoff contest but in general gaming. Don’t forget, they’re still called the best game developers around, in fact, one of the only PURE gaming companies left.

      1. They have good games. But they still have to work to do in other areas. (Universal account system, region lock, etc)

        1. That much I can agree. Region lock has to go and the universal account much like Apple’s version (sign in/out and (re)download any and all purchases in any device) will help a lot.

    3. Who says that Wii U is competeing with the PS4 and Xbox One. It’s playing the same role as the Wii U as the Wii, just let the other 2 compete with each other and just mind it’s own business…

        1. Ridley, the Angel of Death

To everyone else, yes, they are competing. But as far as Nintendo is concerned, the only thing Nintendo is competing with is the 3rd party games on their consoles that they don’t help make or pay to have made, not Sony & Microsoft.

          1. But it is! Sony and Microsoft have the potential to be able to steal Nintendo’s customers away from them if they don’t offer them the experience they want. Just like how Sony stole me from Nintendo. Lmao.

            1. Ridley, the Angel of Death

              >.< Really? I didn't realize Sony makes all of those 3rd party games that come to their console? I could have sworn it was the 3rd parties that make those games going to the Playstation 4. You are free to give Sony that credit but we both know it was the 3rd parties that made you go Sonyan, not Sony itself.

              1. Yes it was! Why do you not understand this?! Those third party games are also on the Xbox One too but I went with the PS4. Why? Because I feel like they offer me a better experience.

                1. Ridley, the Angel of Death

What does you buying the PS4 for multiplats instead of going for XBO have to do with Nintendo not competing? … Bah! Fuck this subject! I replied to this comment at the wrong time as I don’t really care at this moment. At this point, I’m just rushing through some emails from MyNintendoNews so I can get out of the freaking 100s on my email account. I’ve finally gotten below 200 today! *ywns* I’m getting too tired to care now so I’m just gonna hitch a ride on Metal Face! *dives off a cliff onto Metal Face flying by below*

  9. This guy, patcher, is totally off in his numbers! He’s looking at it as a “3 console race”. & it’s actually a “2 All in one entertainment centers vs each other war”. With 1 (& the only true) video game console in a completely different direction!

I perdict by 2019 that the Wii U will have a better than expected installed fanbase. It won’t match what “the other guys” sales but last I checked The “N” said they aren’t competing with either.
Also, by 2019, Xbox 1 WILL NOT see the sales you believe they will. Sony probably wont either but they will most definitely out sell M$! Remember! This is supposed to be about VIDEO GAMES! Not everything else being first with online ecperience trumping all. Not to mention overpriced DLC running rampart to a already overpriced $60 game purchase!
By 2019 the Traditional Gamers will reemerge & finally seek “quality over quantity!”

  10. You see, the Wii U is a good console, but Nintendo isn’t really selling it that well. Sure, it’s got tons of awesome games coming out, but what good does it do if no one knows about them? Nintendo needs to go all out with aggressive marketing, or else the Wii U might not ever surpass 20 million… (Although that number is kinda too low to be realistic)

    1. I agree to certain extent. Even with marketing the Wii U is doomed to mediocrity. Too many mistakes were made by Nintendo, marketing being one of them. But the main two mistakes that were made was naming the system the Wii U, and not having any major 1st party games at launch. I’m a huge Nintendo fan but even I was slightly turned off by the Wii U at launch. For me it was mainly the lack of any good launch titles. And I hated the name. Overall I think the success of the Wii made Nintendo a little arrogant, however I do think they have learned from these mistakes.

      1. I agree that the Wii U is one of the worst names they could have named the Wii’s successor. But, contrary to what you and some other people think, I actually really enjoyed NSMBU when it came out (launch title!) and Nintendo Land was sorta fun too… (Not as much as NSMBU though…)

        1. Really? NSMBU was just straight up copy and paste to me. Like I paid $60 just to play the same Wii game I already bought. I’d take Nintendo Land over NSMBU any day.

          1. Ridley, the Angel of Death

Odd. I don’t recall the exact same level set ups in NSMBU in other Mario games. Sure they all looked roughly the same but each game was different in their level designs. Besides, they were made to be homages to the original Mario games like Super Mario Bros & Super Mario World but with 3D models instead of 2D sprites. Anyway, I blame the fact the NSMB games were badly planned & should have been spread out more between releases.

        2. I’m not saying NSMBU or Nintendo Land were bad games, they were just not the blockbuster launch titles they needed. Remember what the original Wii launch titles were? How about Mario Galaxy, Twilight Princess, and Metroid… Now those are some launch titles.. A 3d Mario, a new Zelda, and a new Meteoid game. All at the beginning of the Wii’s life. Imagine if the Wii U had those launch titles… The Wii U would have already passed 20 million by now..

          1. True. Twilight Princess was enough to sell me on a Wii at launch when it was released. Imagine if they had Zelda U at launch… Or better yet, what if they were smart enough to delay “Skyward Sword” to be released on the Wii U with the same art style and controls, but with better performance and graphics. That could have potentially sold people on a Wii U at launch…

            1. Ridley, the Angel of Death

Or maybe even delayed Xenoblade Chronicles to be a launch title for Wii U. With the years in between, they could have updated the graphics a bit into HD.

      2. I am tired of seeing about naming was a mistake. Wii to Wii U is no different than Nintendo Entertainment System to Super Nintendo Entertainment System. People always want to say this and that is a problem but there is no problem. The people that want the system is buying it and those that don’t want it is not. Reason is too many because each person’s reason would be different.

        1. Wha? Wii U is a horrible name. Completely different from NES to SNES. In fact, the name Nintendo and Super Nintendo were the two best named consoles in Nintendo history..

  11. I rather go with making a profit over quantity of units sold. They can use the revenue to make another console as powerful as PS5 since they fucked up thinking the power they gave wii u was good for 2015.

    1. What would change if it was more powerful than the other current generation system? No one and I mean no one knows what a particular system or any product for that matter why it does not sell. Consumers are individuals with thoughts and practices that suits them. A simple power changes nothing if the same consumers just don’t want or cannot afford the product. Media does not get the big picture. If power was everything then iPhones wouldn’t be the major seller that it is. If power was all something needed then the Vita would be outselling 3DS. Power is a buzzword like hardcore, review scores, and award show.

      1. Yet The most Powerful console and most expensive console is the best selling. Why? Because Sony thought about 2015 in 2008.

        1. If you think it is because of power then the media have influenced you more than you think. It is a product that the people that have bought it wanted. You are attempting to say that it is one reason why the PS4 is selling well, when it is a lot of reason. This is the first generation where the most powerful console is selling the most. It is not within the trend. If it was all about power, then PC gaming would be even bigger than it is. Research would give you the answers. It is never and never have been one reason why a product sells. Since the 1st generation the most powerful console has never been the best seller. Colecovision was more powerful than Atari but consumers bought Atari instead. As I pointed out this is the only generation where this is different. The generation is not over and many variables can change and if it does not change, power still was not the reason.

          1. And yet you lack the reason why PS4 is selling and wii u is not. Each generation console changes. So in the past of course it was never proven. Ps2 sold well because DVD were the thing BACK THEN. Now it’s about power this generation. That’s why powerful consoles to weakest is the same as best selling to weakest.

          2. PS4 receives broken rushed shot and still saels. Why? Power. That’s why it doesn’t need 1886 to be rated 10/10. It could go months without reviving new hardware. Peoples these days like a box they can say is the most powerful device.

            1. You say people like power. Have you interviewed the people that purchased the 18 million PS4s. You speak as I’d you are stating fact. My brother in law bought a PS4 for my nephew for Christmas. He played it for a week and then traded to his daddy for PS3. He gave his PS3 to his younger brother. If it was only about power then why would he do that. The PS4 has not been used since.

              1. This is an easy easy easy as reply. first of all wolhat made your brother in low buy a PS4? Was it knowledge of knowing it was the hyped console because it was powerful or was it because he just expected PS4 to be better than PS3 because 4 comes after 3. As for your nephew, he doesn’t sound like he is into games.

              1. Will Nintendo and Microsoft do have their fans. So of course they will sell. But loom at the chart. Most powerful console best sellimg. Weaakest console in 3rd place. Power power power power. What else would it be?

                1. Ridley, the Angel of Death

Even if the Wii U was as powerful as the PS4, it still wouldn’t have made a difference since one of the big reasons the Wii U is missing out on 3rd party games is the fact that it’s not a twin of the PS4 & Xbox One. And even with more 3rd party exclusives, I wouldn’t be surprised if they were a still a rarity.

  12. I highly doubt this will come to be, the Wii U sold more than 9 mill in 2 years with a small install base… if you double the sales, there should be around 18 mill by 2017, and thats improperly considering they have the same level of install base. That said, 18 mill by 2017 only leaves a small 2 mill to surpass this theory all within 2 years.
This theory in a nutshell; they expect the WiiU to sell less than 10 million over a course of 4 years. 0-e

If I were to predict, I’d say about 15 mill units will sell from 2015 to 2017 [totaling to 24 mill WWide]. Then by 2019… I’m not too sure… It’s too far, but it should be selling a little more than the
    2015 -2017 time period.

    1. What do you mean by “install base”? I know what it means, I just don’t understand how you are using it. If the Wii U sold 9 million consoles, that means the install base is 9 million. If it doubles that by 2017 that means the install base will be 18 million.

    2. Well, there are some things you would need to keep in mind about the whole issue. Just because the WiiU sold 9 million units since launch, doesn’t mean it will keep going at the same pace. A few of Nintendo’s biggest blockbusters, such as MK and SSB, are out on WiiU already, and we know those get released only once per console, and TLoZ is coming up too, soon. Will there be other games pushing sales as much as those did? We don’t even know about any of their games set for 2016 and later, so it’s pretty hard to tell at this moment. I can imagine that we’ll get games like Paper Mario, Animal Crossing, Metroid and such, but will those attract enough new buyers? Personally, I can see Animal Crossing doing a really good job, seeing how incredibly well the 3DS version did, so there’s definitely a huge fanbase for it. Not too sure about the other games.
But either way, I believe E3 will shed some good light on the WiiU’s future and we’ll get an idea of how things are going to continue, it’s probably going to be Nintendo’s last chance to convince people of their console.

        1. Definitely. The game with the latest release date as of now is Zelda, and that one’s scheduled for the end of 2015. So if games revealed at E3 happened to have at least year to go until their release, we would still have to wait many months after Zelda for the next good game. Would be quite a terrible scenario.
Let’s hope Nintendo will announce a couple of new games prior E3 through Directs. They would definitely need it, that’s for sure.

    1. This^. I was talking to a rather major investor, pretty much said that. The electronics industry has too many variables, thus super unpredictable and risky to invest in

  13. I think it really depends on how good the Wii U sells this year. If it can sale 4 – 5 million units this year, then it will pass 20 million lifetime. If it only sells 3 – 3.5 million then I think 20 million is an accurate number.

And luck had nothing to do with the Wii’s success. Some people are so stupid I swear to god.

    1. Completely agree. It wasn’t luck at all. They just got it right that gen.

Nintendo have released consoles in six generations and was the most successful in three of them. Being right 50% of the time is hardly luck.

      1. Exactly. You do not have the best selling console for six straight years because of luck. There is no such thing as six years of consecutive luck,..lmaoo

        1. Ridley, the Angel of Death

And if someone does think they’ve been lucky for six straight years, they must have seen good luck in every little bad thing that occurred to them.

  14. Hey, I really don’t care what it is, but could you just make… some news post to make this one go away? The filthy XPaperweight is burning itself into my monitor, you know, like those Nazi-stamped crates from Raiders. “Pachter Admits to Having No Dick”, “Deluded Imaginary Military Figure Suicide Bombs Sony Headquarters, Kills No One But Self”, “Rosalina Retired Due to Being a Sucky Character,” I’m not being picky here, just ANYTHING.

    1. Lucky to to get 15? It’s at around 10 right now, with this year being potentially the best year so far. I personally believe the Wii U will peek in sales this next Holiday Season. Thats why I said we have to wait and see what happens this year. There is still Zelda, Xenoblade, StarFox, Splatoon, and a few lesser known titles. Those are the games we know about, there is usually one or two big games revealed at E3 as well. This year is bigger than 2014. Last year was just multiplayer games like Smash and Mari Kart. 2015 is all about the single player games.. Sales will hopefully hit 15 million by the end of 2015..

  15. Consumers still have a bad taste in their mouth over the Wii and the perceived lack of good games due to most people buying shovelware ever present on retailers shelves. They then got used to the lack of quality they perceived and the corresponding low price so when they saw a Wii U they for sure weren’t going to pay $300+. Maybe if they lower the Wii U to $199 or lower they might spur sales. But that won’t happen because Nintendo is too stubborn and won’t fire the failure Iwata.

    1. Bad taste in the mouth? I’m glad one person can say what every gamer that enjoy Nintendo products on why they not buying a Wii U. Please tell me the reason why my nephew who wants a Wii U doesn’t have a Wii U. Please tell me why my brother’s family have not bought any current generation system. I’ll help you out. It has nothing to do with money or the Wii.

    2. Yeah it would be better to had put more power in it to sell in for $300. That’s why PS4 can sell because it has power. I wish Nintendo thought about 2015 in 2008 like Sony. Then it would sell better.

      1. Again with the power, if people just wanted power they would be PC gamers and not console gamers. Nintendo went power with Gamecube and how did that work out for them. In case people didn’t know, consoles are made not to be powerful but to be an affordable way to play video games.

        1. Will what else is it? Wii U has a game pad and quality games 10/10 best games. PS4 has broken 3rd party And same titles on PS3. So what is the reason why PS4 outsells Wii U? PS4 doesn’t even need advertising anymore.

        2. Yeah they went Power with the GameCube what a year after PS2? And did they put a DVD into their GameCube with getting a year seeing how PS2 sold well and killed dreamcast? Nope. that’s why. When Sony saw Wii selling well they added their Wii motes to try to get in with sells. When Sony saw it was a phase they went back to making games with their traditional controllers. That’s why PS3 sells during its end cycle is still strong and Wii’s wasnt.

    3. What Wii U needs is a facelift. If Nintendo sees the GC adapters are good sellers. Why not make 2016 consoles Backwards competible? That could boost Wii U sales right there. Make the facelift Gamepad work all OSs and Wii U could sell like the GC adapters. The moment the rumor came out that Nintendo stopped production of the GameCube adapters and seeing it sell on ebay for $100. THAT’S EXTRA VALUE TOWARD WII U integrated into the hardware.

      1. And what the hell does being most financially stable have shit to do with how good their console is??.. lmao… oh my god …. Im not even really sure how to respond to that…

      2. Because Xbox isn’t more powerful than PS4 that’s why. This generation is about power. That’s why both Nintendo and Microsoft needed price cuts and PS4 doesnt. That’s why PS4 3rd party titles sell better than Xbox One same tittles. “Power” sells consoles this generation. Bayonetta 2 was a well put together game. And younger than GTAV. Yet old as GTAV is still top 10. Why? Because they are played on “Powerful” consoles. That’s why Wii U has no 3rd party it wouldn’t sell because IT’s “power” that sells software.

        1. They look the same to me. Actually, some games perform better on XB1 (COD, FC4, Thief , AC Unity). Plus you have KILLLER %^&*() Instinct on XB1.

          1. That’s the past. Things change from 1990 and 2015. You can’t compare a power comparison 25 years ago up to now. Internet didn’t exist. Online didn’t exist. DVD didn’t exist. 1080P didn’t exist. 4 players didnot exist.

          2. It doesn’t matter if they look the same. This generation people like the stereotype that the PS4 games should be the best because it is off the most powerful console. This generation is all about “Power.”

      3. More exclusives? What exclusives, they are pretty much on par. Also, XBOX decision is the only gaming platform loosing money.. As in always. Nintendo has enough money to lose money for years and still be ok, PlayStation has been profitable and Sony can just spin off the brand. Now the Xbox devision is and has been in trouble, its one of the few things that MS contiously loses money on. If anything, the next platform to go will most likely be the XBOX.

    1. I agree. The Ps4 is superior. But with games like Destiny, The Order, and Assassins Creed Unity you wont be having much fun. I would rather play Zelda and Xenoblade on the less superior Wii U to be honest.

      1. There is a mountain of good games for the last gen consoles as well, and both the consoles and the games can be bought very cheap now.

      2. I been hearing how SHITTY PS4 games are compared to Wii U for over a year. Yet “Power” sells this generation. As SHITTY as I read how PS4 tittles are sells ain’t slowing yet for Sony. “POWER” sells hardware and software this generation.

        1. Yeah MAYBE the Xbox has not peaked and PS4 has but Sony’s console didn’t need two price cuts to reach 20million. They just put in power.

      3. I agree I prefer Zelda too. But Wii U ain’t getting an increase of sales with minority of people who prefer quality games over power.

  16. 4 Years for Sony to sell 80 mil PS4’s, MS to sell 57 mil X1’s and Nindy to sell under 20 mil WiiU’s? Where do they get these guys?

    1. It still hasn’t reached 10 million even with MK8, Super Mario 3D World, Bayonetta 2, Pikmin 3 and Wonderful 101 and Smash…think about it.

      1. It’s also only been out for 2 years and two months. To get to the end of 2019 is another 5 years. (you have to count this year). So what they are saying is that the Wii U will only sale ten million more consoles in five years.

Sounds a little low to me. We have to wait and see what this year will do. If Nintendo has a strong 2015 it will easily pass 20 million. If Nintendo has a bad year, like only selling 3 million Wii U’s, then yea, it will probably only sale around 20 million. Everything depends on this year for the Wii U…

        1. That’s the past. Things change from 1990 and 2015. You can’t compare a power comparison 25 years ago up to now. Internet didn’t exist. Online didn’t exist. DVD didn’t exist. 1080P didn’t exist. 4 players didnot exist.

  17. I have a new theory. The Wii U was never intended to be Nintendo’s core console. It is a essentially the equivalent of the DSi or whatever Nintendo intended for DS (e.g. 3rd pillar) before it became a runaway success. They never marketed it (remember the brilliant “we would like to play” campaign). They don’t seem to care about it. They’ve invested 10x more resources in advertising 3DS than Wii U. It is a stopgap system that was designed to buy them time before they release their “real” system. The Nintendo (Project) Fusion will work as a console and portable (similar to Neo Geo X Gold) and will be probably be around twice the power of Xbox One or PS4. It will have a traditional controller similar to GC but more streamlined. Backward compatible with Wii U and Wii. The price will be $299. Release date winter 2016 or 2017.

    1. Just twice the power of PS4? They better be thinking of PS5. They already thought about PS3 in 2008 and look what happened. Wii U ain’t even at 10 million units.

      1. Next Playstation will still be weak compared to PC gaming. It is not power. I don’t understand why people don’t understand that.

        1. I agree, it is not power. Traditionally the most powerful console has never dominated a generation, so far the PS4 is an exception. But it is about (a perception of) value for money, and power plays a role in that.

A considerable lack of power on the other hand, like with Wii U, affects whether or not it is even feasible for 3rd parties to try and port their games over. Wii U won’t have games that target the current gen competitor consoles largely because it just can not run them, and that reduces the consoles value.

          1. PC? PC and console gaming ain’t 100% the same. I don’t have time to go to no tech store every 30days to upgrade to increase power. PS4 proved power sells “consoles” this generation.

            1. Your lack of knowledge about pc gaming is showing. PS4 is not even powerful but you keep talking like it is. There is not one reason and never will be one reason why a product is selling. You can ask people here why they bought a wii u and you will get some different answers.

              1. You right I’m not a PC gamer. I’m not paying hundreds of dollars every month to upgrade to play no damn game. A console getting upgraded every 6 years. I’m good with that. And besides even if the PS4 is weak to a PC, IT DOESN’T MATTER. A PC isn’t a gaming console.

                  1. Oh so according to Hollowgrape, my 2008 PC never used for gaming can do 1080p 60fps. I don’t need to go to no store to buy any upgrades.

            2. Your lack of knowledge about pc gaming is showing. PS4 is not even powerful but you keep talking like it is. There is not one reason and never will be one reason why a product is selling. You can ask people here why they bought a wii u and you will get some different answers.

        2. PC? PC and console gaming ain’t 100% the same. I don’t have time to go to no tech store every 30days to upgrade to increase power. PS4 proved power sells “consoles” this generation.

      2. The Ps5 will will not release for a very long time. While the Wii U only had one year advantage on the Ps4, Nintendo’s new system will have a three or four year advantage on the Ps5. So a system that is only twice as powerful would be just fine. Alot of people are saying that the eighth generation of consoles (Sony and Microsoft) will last ten years. It just cost way too much money to develop new hardware, something Sony is seriously lacking at the moment. Sony is in no rush to push new hardware, while Nintendo is probably over halfway finished with development on their new hardware. I really don’t know why everyone keeps underestimating Nintendo..

        1. um no if they just focus on the PS4 it wont sell. That’s what happened when Nintendo focus on PS3 in 2008. They need to focus on PS5 in R&D. Learn from their mistakes.

  18. These analysts don’t have any credibility per say, but Nintendo made many mistakes with the Wii U. Horrible name, very little advertisements in both games and console, neglects it for the 3DS, horrible launch titles (should have put the final Wii games like MP9 and Kirby Return to Dreamland as Wii u launch games instead), no N64 or GC virtual console as of yet, multiple game droughts, lack of unified account system, small amount of storage, etc., etc., etc. I love Nintendo, but I will not be blind to the number of things they have screwed up on. We also have amiibo problems, normal stock problems, Nintendo promising for Wii U to be for hard-core gamers (that’s debatable), region-locking, how they handle pirating, and etc., etc. once more. Again don’t get me wrong Nintendo makes great systems and even better games, but they need to get their crap together.

    1. Totally agree. Also even though New 3DS XL is selling really well….what is up with the horrible horrible naming schemes. It’s confusing for the average person. The new portable has a beefed up processor….it is a new system. Name it Super 3DS…or something that at least makes sense.

      1. I think Nintendo comes up with these names with their home country in mind. Everyone in Japan will know if Nintendo puts out a new console to the point where a console’s name doesn’t matter. But over here in America and Europe where most people could not care less about Nintendo, the names confuse the average consumer.

  19. Lol perhaps the numbers are right but this guy has no friggin clue about the core install base that would just buy IPs on day one w/o hesitation.

Besides a new console is already in development so even having doubts about the company moving away fron dedicated hardware business is already a very far stretch.

  20. Pingback: Analytics empresa espera Wii U a ficar aquém das 20 milhões de unidades globais Em 2019 | Games Bros – O melhor dos Games e Consoles, notícias, vídeos, reviews e muito mais!

  21. It’s already near 10 by now and it’s 2015 which BTW, Wii U has an onslaught of killer apps coming like Pokemon, Star Fox and Zelda on the way, not to mention a new Metroid in the works so that will boost the sales quite nicely. Here’s my LEGIT analysis:

Wii U will sale close to 20 million (approximately 16-19 million) by the end of 2015. 20 million by 2019 is pure BS hate bashing, not prediction. That is something that fucking idiot Patcher would say.

    1. End of 2015? I doubt it. It took a little over two years to reach 9. One out of two of those years had major releases like Smash, Bayonetta, and Mario Kart. If it continues at that pace, in another two years, 2017 maybe, it might be at 20 million.

I highly doubt it will hit 20 this year unless something major and massively positive happens for the system. Chances are, the games announced for the system this year probably won’t come close to Mario Kart and Smash numbers in turn not moving as many systems as those games may have.

      1. Vastly open world Zelda, Star Fox returning, Splatoon, Kirby/Yoshi, Devil’s Third, Mighty No. 9, possible 3D Metroid (Prime 4?), MK8/Smash Bros. DLC, possible Amiibo-centered adventure game like Infinity/Skylanders and many more unannounced surprises waiting for E3/Pax/Tokyo Game? If those aren’t saying “Wii U sales will surge higher than previous years”, IDK what will in your particular mind set.

            1. Delay splatoons and add voice chat. People want it delay the game and add it. Test it make sure it works well and then release it. It could move Wii U units better than no voice chat. After Sony saw DRM didn’t work well with Microsoft, they knew what to do and say. They listened to the consumers’s reactions. another reason why PS4 doesnt need a price drop, or good games or even heavy advertising to breach 20 million.

                  1. Not anymore. Now every moron calls them a “kiddy” gaming company and yet still buy shit they shouldn’t be playing or supporting like rehashes and broken promises. Today’s society is beyond stupid and from saving.

                    1. Hmm I didn’t think about that. They make really good games I just wish they make better decisions on future console specs.

          1. None of those franchises have been major system sellers save for Zelda on the 3DS. DLC is not going to move systems and those new IP’s are likely not going to either. They definitely will not move it any more than Mario Kart and Smash.

On the whole, it will be people who already own Wii U’s getting those games – and not even all of them.

Example: I work with a few die-hard Nintendo fans. These guys will literally fight you if you criticize Nintendo in any way.

Yesterday, I picked up Kirby and the Rainbow Curse. These same die-hard fans (who own Wii U’s too, btw) were trying to dissuade me from getting it because “it’s not a real Kirby game.”

Of course, I still got the game. Even here on MNN, tons of comments have shown disdain for that Kirby game. The same goes for the upcoming Yoshi game. That’s just an example.

No doubt we have to wait until the end of the year but as someone who has worked with the industry for the past 5 years, and an avid gamer for the past few decades, I don’t see those games having major impacts on the Wii U.

The one that might do the most for it is Zelda – but again, I doubt it will be more than Smash and Mario Kart.

With that said, if Nintendo keeps putting out games, despite sales, I’ll be good. I’m enjoying my Wii U as it is.

            1. And there you go putting the damper on Wii U while hypocritically saying it’s cool. That’s at least what Nintendo is doing right: Putting forth good quality games with much focus on being fun and not for profiting out of idiot’s pockets.

              1. Do you know what the word “hypocrite” means? There was nothing hypocritical in my statement and I was not “putting the damper” on the Wii U. I have always liked my Wii U. I have had it since launch and I have quite a number of games for it. Never once have I said anything negative about the Wii U itself. Never once have I suggested it’s a bad system or lacking good games. I was one of the few who loudly proclaimed the potential the system has had since its announcement and through its lifetime on the market.

With that said, I’m not blind to reality either. Stating facts is not hypocrisy. Nintendo’s business handling of the system has not been good and that has held back its sales. That doesn’t mean the system is bad. It’s sales are just not in an optimal position. I doubt it’s going to sell any better than it did last year. It might sell on par with 2014 but there currently isn’t much more going for it in 2015 as far as we currently know.

            2. Why do you doubt Zelda will do less for the system than Smash? Smash has never been a system seller. Some could argue Mario Kart was never a system seller until recent years. In fact it’s not a single game that sales a system. It’s the cumulative of all the great nintendo titles that convince people to hop on board. And you act like Smash and Mario Kart no longer play a role in persuading people to buy a Wii U.

Think of a single person buying a new Wii U like a scale. All the great games are piling up on that scale, higher and higher. Zelda could be the game that tips the scale for that one individual. So he didn’t buy the system because of Smash, or Mario Kart, or Zelda. He bought the system because of all three combined.

              1. Smash helped move Wii U’s last year. That’s why I included it in my statement. I was speaking of the Wii U’s games last year and what helped to move units. More than any other games, Smash and Mario Kart helped.

I agree though, in general the franchise hasn’t been a major selling point for previous systems. But that goes for Zelda too. I didn’t say it will do less but I highly doubt it will do more than the combination of titles released last year.

    2. current gen consoles riding the coattails of the last generation how long will this continue?

Nintendo may not of have sold as many wii u consoles as they may have liked by naming it the wii u but now mostly all wiis are off the market wii u stands alone for nintendo home consoles it could sit in stores and still stand out simply because of the touchscreen eventually it will be dirt cheap. profit

Im still waiting for nintendo to do a full vr launch not a add on.

      1. I don’t think Nintendo will go down that road for a while. They’re still afraid of the past. Plus doing a standalone VR system wouldn’t exactly be viable. VR isn’t for everyone. They need something with wider appeal.

        1. what they need is a powerful system on par with PS5. I don’t understand why people can’t get this. It’s power that sells consoles in 2015. Why else is it that Microsoft can come up with so many mistakes and still surpass the Wii U but not PS4. “Power.”

    3. Also Wii U doesn’t need amother price drop. What it needs is a facelift. A facelift is giving the Wii U physical changes. Not changes in power because Sega died but changes such as adding GameCube capability to the unit, actually making Gamepad work any OS built with the system. Having game pad work further than 25ft away. And since the GameCube hardware is outdated it can’t boost price that much.

      1. You know that makes perfect sense. If they redesign the Wii U to not look like the Wii, people might actually think it is a new system. They can also shrink the side of the Gamepad (perhaps closer to the size of the Vita) and relaunch the system. Yes, yes yes. The Gamepad signal range sucks.

    4. This is this kind of statements that actually bring the Wii U down. From what I’ve seen, quite a few people are getting interested into a Wii U since the big announcements. If Nintendo keeps this up, I believe it will end up doing fairly well. However, they do need to step their marketing game up. Big time.

    5. I Love! How every journalist always has something to say or nag about on Nintendo. Like how the new 3ds doesn’t come with a charger and they make it seem like the end of the world, but when Sony or Microsoft doesn’t something wrong, not saying nintendo did no one ever says anything not even for a day. And as far as I know WiiU line up is wonderful, beyonetta 1-2, 3D world, smash bros, captain toad, xeno blade x, Zelda wii u, star fox, shin megami x fire emblem. And so much more, but anyway yea that’s my point

    6. Also for all the people that thinks nintendo needs to update their power is wrong, if nintendo is doing the exact same thing as sony in Microsoft have all the exact same exclusive 3rd party line up which are mainly mediocre or broken games and very small 1st party l. what’s stoping you from buying sonys console from nintendo or vise Versa if it’s all the same? Without nintendo there is no difference in gaming truth be told there the only ones innovating in the industry right now.
