Nintendo Of America President: ‘Splatoon Is Aiming To Do For Action Shooters What Mario Kart Did To Racing’

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime is hopeful that Splatoon will eventually revolutionise the action shooting genre in the same way as Mario Kart shook up the racing genre when it was released back in 1992 on the Super Nintendo. Reggie is obviously very confident about the colourful shooter and judging from the previews he probably has a right to be. Splatoon is released on the Wii U in May.

Speaking to us directly on what the title means to the company, President Reggie Fils-Aimé noted that it was “aiming to do for action shooters what Mario Kart did for racing.” He went on to note that it was a “major” new IP for Nintendo, and that the game is “not just about kills. It’s designed to be fun no matter what your skill level is.” We’ll see how major it is sales-wise come May, but for now, it does have a strong niche following on paper.

Thanks, MasterPikachu6

  1. how’s it going to do that when teammates won’t be able to communicate everyones going to be upset and stop playing the game of the week.

      1. People seriously just want to complain about something. These same ppl complaining about the voice chat are going to be the ones having the most fun with the game

      2. That is either a straight up lie or your experience with TF2 is extremely limited. People talk all the time on TF2. If anything I usually mute them because they talk so damn much.

Know what else they do? Play more than just one game mode.

Neither of these are things Splatoon players even have the option of using or ignoring, which kills pretty much any hype the game has right now.

  2. Well, not having voice chat immediately hacked off a leg for this race you’re trying to run Reggie. I’m sure the game is going to be a blast, and I personally probably wouldn’t even use it. But I know a lot of people really like it.

  3. No voice chat in a heavily coop action shooter in 2015. That is a big fail. I really want this game but I can’t support this decision. Just like mp10, I will pass.

    Nintendo….you fucking suck now!

    1. What if Nintendo makes a universal chat for their system, then its not needed to be included in the game, also I dint know if you played TF2 but how many times do you here people use the voice chat despite it being a heavily coop shooter, pretty much never, and the people who do usually get kicked out of the match because everyone find them annoying

      1. I use voice chat to communicate with my friends while playing. It’s rare when we need a random player, but when we do, we should be able to communicate with them if we need to. But it is mainly to talk to friends, I guess if you have none then none of it matters to you.

    2. jtz Igbo Tribe and Decedent of Gad.

In 2015 there is more fail than just voice chat. Only 3 cores for 2015. Only one gamepad for 2015. Not using gamepad to its full.capacity. Wii U depends on AAA in 2015. Wii U AAA don’t last that long for 2015. Gamepad signal length is small for 2015. That’s why they have an NX in the way.

    3. The game doesn’t have voice chat and that’s a reason to not buy it? Good god I remember when actual gameplay was more important than having little kids screaming at you.

          1. I am out of ideas thats why. Nintendo just wont listen to genuine concern and reasoning. I can only vote with my wallet now.

      1. It’s not just the lack of voice chat, it’s the fact there’s only one game mode. I don’t care how good the gameplay is, having only one gametype will practically ensure people get bored with the game quickly.

I WANT Splatoon to be good, I really do. But I have no reason to spend full price on it when TF2 is free and has vastly more options for both chat and game modes.

    1. Just watch any E3 2014 Nintendo reaction videos. That basically sums up the general reaction to Splatoon perfectly.

  4. SHUT THE FUCK UP GIMMIC= DUALSHOCKS SILLY LIGHTBULB

DEM COUGH GIMMICS BEING USED TO CLEARLY ENHANCE GAMING UNLIKE PS4S SILLY LIGHTBULB!!!!!

THE MOTION AIMING IN SPLATOON CLEARLY WORKS PERFECTLY REMOVING MECHANICAL SECOND STICK JANKING AND BLOCKY ROBOTICNESS FROM SHOOTERS

WATCH THE LATEST VIDEOS OF PLAYERS PLAYINGBTHE CROSSVHAIR MOVES SMOOTHLY AND MOUSE LIKE NOT ROBOTICALLY AND CLUNKY AKA A DUALSHOCK

THE CONTROLS OWN IN THIS GAME

WALK-RUN AROUND MAP VIA LEFT STICK -AIN WITH SLIGHT MM TILTS OF THE PAD CHANGE THE WORLD VIEW CAMERA WITH SECOND STICK

INTERACT WITH MAP AND JUMP INTO BATTLE WITH THE TOUCH SCREEN

BUT ITS ONLY A GIMMIC YEAH RIGHT YOU SONY KIDDYS ARE INSANE-BRAINLESS-AND JELOUS

    1. You realize the game can also be played with just the analog sticks, just like any other FPS. You also still use the second stick, even with motion controls enabled. The difference is with motion controls enable, the right stick is used to look left and right, the motion controls are used to look up and down.

The game will have different control schemes. So way to go on making yourself look really retarded. On top of the fact you act like Sony doesn’t use motion controls either, the PS Vita even had motion controls in FPS before Splatoon was ever around.

Wii u is too weak to handle voice chat. If they gave it the power of PS4 back in 2008 it would be able to handle it. That’s why the graphics suck. Voice chat and better graphics is too much for Wii u to handle.

    1. SHUT THE FUCK UP GIMMIC= DUALSHOCKS SILLY LIGHTBULB

yes talking online requires power IDIOT CASUAL

GREAT GRAPHICS-60 FRAMES -AMAZING CONTROLS -INTERACTIVE MAP

LOL VOICE CHAT IT ISNT REQUIRED CASUAL ,YOU CAN USE YOUR MAP AND JUMP IN TAP THE SCREEN TACTICALLY TO ENHANCE YOUR ABILLITY TO HELP YOUR TEAM

INSTEAD OF SCREAMING DOWN A MIC WITH OTHER COD 10 YEAR OLDS

      1. jtz Igbo Tribe and Decedent of Gad.

Voice chat is built in with the console so it uses the weak CPU. So that why this weak game lacks voice chat. Too much on Wii U to do 60fps and voice chat

    2. There are so many multiplayer games that don’t have voice chat and they’re better than anything the Porstation 4 has churned up in it’s current run, so get your idealistic head out of your ass. The reason they dont fucking add it is because it’s meant to be a fun game not a complete clone of Call of duty where all the voice chat is used for is a stupid playground for 12 year olds to talk shit about campers and who fucked who’s mom.

      1. jtz Igbo Tribe and Decedent of Gad.

Wii u games are better than Wii u but PS4 has power and 20 million install bases. Power sales consoles.

        1. Really?! I don’t think that’s what sold ps2, ds and Wii. All best selling consoles and the weakest of their generation

    3. Ok shut the fuck up with that shit. Usually I agree with the things you say about the Wii U being weak, but this is just plain retarded. Yes the Wii U isn’t capable of A LOT of stuff but voice chat? FUCKING VOICE CHAT?!? Really?

    4. Mario Kart 8 and Smash Bros say hi.
Also, Nintendo have a video chat feature like Skype. How many other consoles in history can say that.

      1. LOL.. So amusing how sheltered some of you are. You would be amazed to know what other people have done if you pulled your head out of Nintendo’s asshole, for just a minute.

“Nintendo have a video chat feature like Skype. How many other consoles in history can say that.”

Nintendo was actually the last person to the video chatting party. The Xbox 360 and PS3 both had video chatting. The PS Vita has had video chatting also, Skype release on that years ago as well.

So everyone else can say that.

  6. SHUT THE FUCK UP GIMMIC= DUALSHOCKS SILLY LIGHTBULB

nintendo doesnt want silly little boys screaming down a mic or LOL BEAT BOXING LIKE THOSE WANT TO BE RAPPER WHITE KIDS PLAYING COD

BEAT BOXING AND SCREAMING ALL DAY

  7. Game is going to own just like every other Wii u exclusive and then xenoblade chronicles x will come out then star fox will come out then devils third will come out then Zelda will come out…… Feel sorry for the people that like boring games and don’t get a Wii u. To each is own I guess

  8. I’ve never cared for voice chat if the game isn’t an online RPG to the likes of Phantasy Star Online 2, where it is often a requirement to coordinate 12 player raids. Even then, that is done through using Skype, TeamSpeak, or Mumble.

Splatoon is an eight-player shooter with four players on each team…there is no need to have voice chat. The goal of the game is obvious: you claim territory in your paint color and shoot at the opposing team. Voice chat would just make the whole experience awkward in Splatoon instead of making it come together like it does in games like Battlefield, Tribes, Unreal Tournament, Team Fortress, Diablo, or Phantasy Star Online.

Team Member #1: “Yeah, go wiz some paint on that wall to your left.”
    Team Member #2: “O-Okay…?”
Team Member #3: “Wait, you want me to what?
#1: “F***ING SPLATTER YOUR S*** EVERYWHERE! Bogey on your right, #4.”
    Team Member #4: “You mean #2, #1.”
    #1: “GOD F***ING DAMNIT, I’LL TELL YOU WHAT I MEAN, #4!”

      1. It’s not that I’m against it. I’m ambivalent towards it. In some games, like Splatoon, it’s not necessary to enjoy the game.

That being said, Nintendo has shot the game in the legs several times already. For some players who think voice chat is mandatory, that’s just one way the game had its legs chopped off, pretty much. The other worst offenders that people should be focusing on?

        1. Matches do not start until 8 Players join the same game.
        2. There are so far only 2 Multiplayer Modes…in a 2015 third-person shooter, that’s inexcusable.
        3. There are only two character models; one for Male and another for Female. That’s it. The rest of the changes are just color swaps.
        4. There is no offline Versus Mode with bots.
        5. There are no bits to fill in player spots that don’t fill-up in online mode, meaning if players on your team drop, the entire match will become lopsided.
        6. There is no local multiplayer or co-op, period.

I mean…if they want this game to be the next Mario Kart, they need to delay the game and fix all of those problems first. Voice chat would very much be an afterthought when all that is fixed.

I’m not damage-controlling what Nintendo is doing with Splatoon at all. I want to see these issues fixed and make sure that the game is actually worth the price of admission before getting it because I’m sick of games that sound good on paper but are nothing like they should be when released. I’ve felt like that’s all that has been going on universally in the gaming industry this generation, which is part of the reason I’ve likely yet to get a PS4 or Xbox One and still own a PS3/360.

As said before, Splatoon is on my radar, but so far it looks like it’s just going to make the same mistakes Mario Party. Gotta wait until reviews to make a better decision here.

  9. I love Nintendo but I think I’m done after the Wii u. So tired of the no voice chat party chat in game chat. Its really annoying there trying to be our parents. No need not to have a simple feature In key game releases. Don’t wana hear use Skype shouldn’t have 2.,Voice chat should at least be an option 2015 kids spend alota time on the internet hear and see worse stuff the swears. Bottom line it comes down to the parents. But Nintendo is not evolving I’m older now and my friends are 2 work a lot can’t always get together would be nice if we had the option to fucking talk on are consoles.
