Confirmed: Splatoon Won’t Feature Any Voice Chat, Plus Here’s A Splatoon Story Mode Video

We thought it might not, but now it has been confirmed that Splatoon won’t feature voice chat. This means that you’ll be unable to communicate with your team mates using chat in the tactical shooter. It seems like a rather glaring omission when all shooters these days generally support voice chat between team mates. Hopefully there’s some way to communicate with other players.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

    1. Nintendo Commander Mar-Vell

Cell phone. Headphones all have mics now. Or you could just continue being a whiny bitch about it.

      1. Yes, because having to use a separate program/device to chat with is totally practical.

Apparently we are all still supposed to be living in the 90’s, and still need things like Ventrilo to chat with in games…

What is the difference between all the people whining about how useless voice chat is? Bottom line it’s an optional feature, so why would anyone be against something they don’t have to use? At least the people complaining about it being absent, have a reason to.

It really makes no sense to hate something you aren’t forced to use, but I guess that isn’t surprising seeing so many act like selfish fools over something so god damn simple. As if no game should ever have voice chat, cause they don’t like it, or because they can use other chatting programs, it shouldn’t matter to anyone else.

That is the damn point. If you are going to chat regardless and there are many other ways to chat, why not just include it in the game? So sick of this child friendly bullshit excuse Nintendo would probably give regarding this. What purpose does this serve other than making people who do want to chat, have to go through an unnecessary process to do so?

Yea I have Skype and all sorts of other chatting services also on my phone and computer, but guess what? I’d rather not have to use them, if I could otherwise just boot up my Wii U and be ready to go. The gamepad has a microphone, just be wonderful if it ever saw any use.

What is this Kindergarten? People can’t think outside of themselves, or the fact that just maybe other people besides themselves would love to use voice chat in a games like this.

        1. Fuck people like him. And fuck Nintendo for the voice chat. They spent all that time showing us at E3 how we could chat with grandpa and how useful it would be yet none of their games use it. Sorry losers, chat between races in kart or matches in smash doesn’t cut it.

          1. I’m rather upset about them butchering voice chat myself and you know what? I’m fucking done here (with Nintendo’s online social paranoia and making strange ass decisions)

        2. Listen, that guy is a fucking idiot. Let him waste his time having to rely on a more inconvenient method to trash talk with his mom over on WhatsApp or some other 3rd rate shit call applications (Skype).

        3. Ridley, the Angel of Death

Last time I heard, Nintendo has a ton of Japanese fans that prefer to remain anonymous online, so Nintendo is probably dropping voice chat because their majority of Japanese fans won’t use it. Which is stupid. With today’s technology, they can easily give us the ability to alter our voices online.

    2. The nintendo magistrate

My sentiment exactly i even asked my boss at Nintendo and he just said they think the game is enough to please players and with all the customization for your inkling they felt it wouldn’t be a necessity (excuses if you ask me)

  1. I’m upset but it’s not a dealbreaker for me. I have Skype and Google Chat so I’m good but it does suck for the people who don’t access to those features. I still see great potential in this seemingly great game but Nintendo seriously, you need to patch this feature in down the line. Multiplayer focused games like Splatoon should have voice chat but I’m getting it day one

    1. Call of duty seems to work rather well on the Wii u without voice chat as the majority of users don’t have a mic. Cooperation still happened without it. Its not essential. I’d prefer to have it for 4 v 4, but if it means I don’t have to listen to 13 year olds swearing because someone’s better at the game than they are, then I’m all for it

          1. I mean like you can turn if off to not hear the stupid kids. Speaking of stupid kids, I played smash last night with this kid I added a few weeks ago from miiverse, and pretty sure he’s like 15. It was him, someone who was at his place, and some girl in the room and me. Clearly they were friends cause it was pretty much a not so obvious 3 on 1 with the girl just running away spamming projectiles. I almost won every time but lost a stupid life only from input lag. They finally switched to teams and literally put it 3 on 1 against me. That’s when I quit the match and said “nice try” and they start going nuts about how I suck and this and that. So yea we played 1 on 1 after that and I beat them even though I was using characters that were slower or had shitty range compared to theirs (beat mario as princess, beat link with mario). And they spammed the whole time. Fireballs constantly and running away. Then koopa kid, they spammed projectiles and the side B attack into Up B and ran away over and over. And then one match I was lucario and he was sonic on omega form of onett. So I couldn’t really do much against the speed, plus he literally only did the homing attack over and over and up smash or up aerial if possible. Then they had the nerve to say I did the same shit over and over, when that’s what they did. It was fucking ridiculous and I clearly showed I was the far better player. They said I was the worst kind of smash player yet they are the kind that ruin smash. If I’m just pressing B over and over, I’m not having fun. But yea fuck those little shits. I whooped them up.

      1. But the option is there and the fans are appreciated for which the same and different fans on MK8 and Smash Bros. 4 are very upset for not being able to chat directly during matches, not even to friends that you know? Fucking Nintendo man…

  2. I Guarantee that voice chat will be a negative in reviews, while Evolved hefty DLC and AssCreeds glitches affected nothing.

  3. For crying out loud. You know, we get it. Nintendo doesn’t want any kid to play their game, and listen to some stupid “tween” or whatever, go on some cussing rant and saying dirty things, and having parents get up in arms over it.

That said, when is the last time any parent went after any video game company for that reason? It simply doesn’t happen. If memory serves correctly, they tried to implement some “quick commands” you could give to teammates, but found the game too frantic to do so. That would mean the ONLY way you can do that is through voice chat, but it’s not allowed. Stupid. Why put a microphone into the gamepad, if you are not going to use it for anything?

Sure, lets just eat up more internet, slowing down the game, by using skype chat or whatever. Just totally irresponsible and archaic on Nintendo’s part. While it’s not necessary for Nintendo’s first shooter to be a military/gritty game, it is necessary to at least modernize the way you work with your teammates.

    1. I don’t think it is about swearing, I think it is an unnecessary feature and clogs the game up needlessly with people talking. You have a map, you know where people on your team are, and while the maps are somewhat complex, the game is about covering the entire arena with paint so lying in wait and such isn’t part of the game as much, so you are basically running around and will easily see where you need to be and not need to be.

People have to get over it as if this is going to kill the fun out of a game…

      1. While I feel Nintendo is stupid for not adding the feature, I also feel the same way you do. What if it doesn’t need it? The game doesn’t look as advanced as COD or Battlefield or something like that.

        1. And I also wish they did have it in the waiting room for MK8… but ultimately, I am just waiting to play the game so in that sense, I didn’t care either

      2. Voice chat clogs the game up with people talking? You can just mute people if you don’t want to hear them, it’s not like you’re forced to listen to them. That’s one of the laziest counter-arguments I’ve ever heard, really.
There’s no point in looking for excuses to justify a decision as silly as this one; Splatoon is supposed to be a tactical shooter where strategy matters, and if you don’t have any way of communicating with your team mates, you’re losing out on an important aspect of a *tactical* game.
Just because you personally prefer not to use it, doesn’t mean everyone feels the same way. And the fact that voice chat has been an important part of multiplayer games for many years now shows how “unneccessary” it really is. There must be a reason why so many people are asking for it, don’t you think?

          1. I know but you will damage a kids feelings or their brain, you just don’t care
            U just care about yourself

            1. Fucker, why should WE CARE about those kids when it’s their dumbass parent’s job to raise them right? Obviously, they failed on their parts a long time ago. No wonder people today are so fucked in their heads. They’re busy listening and accepting jackasses’ words that means nothing instead of thinking and acting for themselves to mean something.

        1. I agree with the decision. I disagree with swearing being the reasoning. I also disagree with the backlash, even if someone wants it in the game. To have this be such a sticking point as to whether the game is worth purchasing is silly. Seeing why it might have been done, is rational.

          1. How is the decision rational or reasonable though? Adding it would cater to everyone, as those who do not want to hear people talk can simply mute the voice chat.
However, if voice chat isn’t featured, those who actually do want it can’t just turn it on as they like. They are forced to accommodate themselves to other people’s preference, which could be easily taken care of, as previously described.
The first option offers a compromise solution which would please both groups, whereas leaving voice chat entirely out is just forcing one single option onto everyone.
To be so adamant about in-game voice chat not being featured in-game just because it’s one’s own preference is, in my view, selfish, to be honest.

            1. In a movie, or any other entertainment experience, the producer can choose to add or exclude whatever elements they choose as that is the experience they are giving you. I see the reasoning, obviously, and just as some people who watch movies and wish they had some element that wasn’t there, it is all worthless babble, when it simply isn’t. I guess the difference here is that if enough people bitch and moan about it, they can patch a game and add it later. I could care less if they do or not, but I also see how it would be worthless to have something that maybe only half the people are using and then you have people talking to a limited number of participants about non-sense in a game where the necessity just doesn’t seem to be there.

      3. It’s a TEAM based game, communicating tends to be something people want to do, and even disregarding that it’s ridiculous that they keep releasing games without such a mandatory feature, and there are so many dumb excuses people make for this such as the swearing, there’s systems in place for abusive behavior like that, it’s called a report function and a mute button.
The lack of party chat as well just makes this worse, not everyone has their pc hooked up near their pc, i use the same tv for both pc and wii u so it’s not a problem for me but there’s been several times where its caused problems playing with friends.
I honestly don’t know why nintendo are doing this tbh, it’s either they are simply to lazy to add support for the function or they really do think there’s something wrong with it and are refusing to implement what is pretty much an industry standard by this point or atleast try and work around the problems they believe it causes.

      4. I highly doubt that many people will chat at once in any game; most wouldn’t want to in a worldwide game [I see it all the time in Halo, COD). Besides… there can be a mute button. It should have at least been in friend modes, it’s so fun and essential to use in any tactical game!

This is why the system should have just implemented cross game chat….
Voice chat should always be an option wether the game is “necessary” for it or not. Simple moderation/reports can exclude the rumor of cuss riots; people who don’t want to use it simply don’t have to; If you are annoyed, use the mute button. It’s the 8th generation, I think it’s beyond easy to implement such a simplistic feature.

    1. Agreed. Nintendo lost a sale. That simple.

Of course, there’ll be people out who’ll defend this. And to those people who do:

    2. Agreed. Nintendo lost a sale. That simple.

Of course, there’ll be people out who’ll defend this. And to those people who do:

    3. Same here. I lost interest as much as I lost interest with PS4 (sorta). But anyway, there’s still hope for Devil’s Third with 16 players and voice chat since its a M-rate game so there shouldn’t be any excuse to omit it from there. Otherwise, that game too will tank aside from the “graphics” controversy.

  4. It should have been allowed only with people in your friends list. Bad move, but I’ll still get the game. It looks really, really good. A definition of “video game”, right there.

  5. Of course it won’t smh. Maybe Nintendo games will utilize voice chat next generation…

Shoutout to that microphone in the GamePad that we never really get to use in first party games and to that “pro controller” that doesn’t really support headphones/headsets.

  6. My Wind Waker Is Bigger (I.A.B.A.B)

Not having voice chat is just fucking stupid. If don’t want to hear a bad word than turn your motherfucking mic off. So fucking simple.

  7. Why does everyone jump to the bad word reasoning conclusion? Maybe it just isn’t that great or necessary to be talking to people during the game.

I am glad there isn’t any talking, because I’d have it muted anyway, and if I would lose the sounds and music because of it, that would be terrible

  8. Tactical shooter? Slow down there speedy. It is definitely a shooter but I highly doubt it is tactical in the way COD, BF, Destiny, ect are. Just paint the area in easy to see paint with easy to see blobs of paint.

Now while I do understand how that can be a disappointment for some, I don’t get how that can be a deal breaker in any way. We don’t even know how different this game is and I’ve seen or heard no one who played the game at any of the events it was there to be played at, talk about how talking was key to having any amount of fun. Again this game is about painting area not shooting characters. The focus is shifted so, perhaps, just peeeeerhaps, it’s not as essential as people think it may be.

Or maybe it is, but not buying it removes you from the conversation and Nintendo’s interests as there’s really no reason to take anyone’s complaints seriously if they won’t get the game due to one small feature not being there. After all companies listen to customers, not posers.

    1. I agree 100% with you. While I do feel the fact that it has no voice chat is stupid and retarded on Nintendo’s part, I also feel that maybe that’s because it doesn’t really need it

  9. It’s unreal how Nintendo still struggles to keep up with the times and the technology that should be taken for granted in this day and age. Very unfortunate.

    1. Exactly, its last gen tech that so many companies integrated in their games because it was a standard. Hell, MS has been doing it for 2 generations, yet Ninty is struggling with it now in 2015. -_-

  10. I’m still hyped for Splatoon, and I will buy it, but I can’t help but feel really dissapointed by the lack of voice chat. It gets rid of a bit of the whole “team strategy”.
Oh well, ’twill still be pretty fun.

  11. I don’t think Splatoon is the type of game that REALLY needs voice chat so that’s why it wasn’t included. All you have to do is paint as much of the map as possible, and you can look at the map to see which area needs more attention or if a teammate needs help. It’ll be really sad to see this game get a low score or not sell as well from the lack of a feature that isn’t necessary.

        1. Exactly. The fact Nintendo didn’t just add something as simple as voice chat is REALLY retarded. I see they’re still taking retard pills. They seriously need to stop. I also think however that maybe it might not need it, but knowing them, it might actually need it but they’re just to stupid to realize it.

          1. It doesn’t need it. But it’s a feature that would be really helpful to some players. Especially with friends. Now you have absolutely no control of what your friends or anyone else does. You can’t assist anyone. The only thing you can do is hope your team wins.

            1. It doesn’t need voice chat per-se, but SOME kind of communication is necessary for a game like this. How can you have a good team if you don’t have some way to play like one?

Imagine if Left 4 Dead had absolutely no way to communicate with others- no voice chat, no voice commands, no typing chat, nothing. Do you know how quickly most teams would die without that? Now I know Splatoon is nowhere near as serious as L4D, but still, in a teamwork-oriented game, ways to communicate with the players you’re working with is vital.

      1. So I’m a bitch for boycotting a half baked game? yes, its half baked because a TEAM based game NEEDS a way to comunicate, and anything other than voice chat won’t work as fluid.

If you’re willing to throw your money to a half asses game then that’s great of you, more power to you, but I actually want my moneys worth.

        1. Yes you’re a bitch. And also a fucking retard. How the fuck does one feature that might not actually be even essential in this game make a game half baked? Dumbfuck. Get your head out of your ass. You’re supposed to play the game to have fun. That’s the whole damn point. No voice chat doesn’t make it less fun. Everyone who played this game today at Nintendo, at PAX and at E3 all said the game was fun as fuck. And guess what? They didn’t have voice chat when they were playing yet no one called it half baked or said it wasn’t fun just because of that. Super Smash Wii U doesn’t have voice chat. Mario Kart 8 doesn’t either. But why aren’t you calling those games half baked? I agree that Nintendo should have added voice chat because not having it in 2015 is fucking retarded, but that doesn’t make the game half baked for small feature as simple as voice chat. You know what a half ass game is? AC Unity is one. Another is Sonic Boom. Games filled with a bunch of glitches at launch and probably even now. Stop being so damn stupid you idiot. If you buy this game, you’re not throwing your money at a half bakes game. You’re throwing your money at a game that seems to be fun and filled with content. You know after typing this comment I feel bad for calling you a bitch and a retard in the beginning of it. So I’m sorry. But saying this game sucks JUST because of no voice chat, is fucking ridiculous and something stupid as fuck to say.

          1. It’s his decision. He has the right not to buy it. Nintendo just lost a sale because they didn’t include a simple feature. Personally, I think Splatoon looks great, but if it bombs, well, lesson learned. Don’t exclude voice chat next time. You’d think that after hearing all the complaints about it in Smash and Mario Kart 8 that they would’ve gotten their crap together and realized it’s what people want.

          2. Are you honestly calling me a retard and then go and compare the in game chat between Splatoon; (a TEAM based ONLINE multiplayer) Mario Kart 8; (a single player/online racer, that needs NO team coordination) and, Super Smash 4; (a brawler/fighter that rarely uses any coordinate between team members, that PUNISHES players if they continuously go against a single player.) Seriously, do even read what you fucking type? Do you not realize that although those games would’ve been better with in game chat they didn’t need it. This one does. How fucking hard is it to include it, Microsoft did it 10 years ago in a console 2 gens ago, and its not like its not possible. Activision did it with its CoD games on the Wii U and I can personally say that even running on a 4mbps Ghost Ran smoothly WITH in game chat.

The Wii U is capable and the fact that we keep telling Nintendo that its necessary in a TEAM based game that THEY are developing, makes it half asses.

No one said the game sucks, stop making shit up to fill your agenda. I’m saying the game is half asses, and I still stand by that statement. I couldnt give a shit if Sonic Boom and Assassins Creed are broken. I don’t buy them and don’t support them so I dont see why you would bring that up against me. Like I said, buy your half ass game.

  12. Voice chat isn’t even necessary. It’s just an added feature that Nintendo decided not to add. Who would I even talk to if voice chat was there?

    1. Pretty much anyone and odds are you’ll meet someone as decent to be friends with. In fact, I highly doubt that the same mouthing fucktards from COD (Sasori) would likely be in this game to ruin the fun with their “Fuck you noob” or “I’m gonna fucking kill or fuck your mom” comments from hipster fat asses munching on Doritos.

  13. Who cares about voice chat anyways? Who wants to hear a bunch of noobs from around the world shouting out bad language?

    1. For that matter, who cares about online ANYTHING? I never have (and never will) care about online gaming.

        1. You can’t imagine how DUMB I think people are that actually care about online modes. I just don’t get it.

            1. The past is a hell of a lot better than today. And the internet is part of the reason for that. I’m sick of the world revolving around the internet.

      1. That’s how I feel every time I hear somebody bragging about online modes in games. I didn’t need them in the past, and I don’t need them now.

  14. No voice chat, no buy from me. Wtf goes on with Nintendo is beyond me. Give us a fucking option, not all of us have shitty internet and we play games with friends who have good internet.

    -_- ffs.

  15. I have no clue why people bitch about voice chat so much, it can easily be turned off if you don’t like hearing people. For fuck sake it isn’t that difficult to please the people who want to use it and those who don’t.

Most people these days don’t even talk at all anymore unless you’re playing something like Call of Duty, GTA or Battlefield. Which should be kind of expected, but again it can be turned off in every one of these games easily also.

Oh well, not like I didn’t see this coming a mile away with Nintendo.

  16. I would’ve liked voicechat, but on this kind of game, map markers like League of Legends seems to be a much better concept, and I really hope that they exploit the Gamepad to let you place map markers and alert your teammates, that’d pretty much make the no-voicechat complain dissapear.

  17. I’m no longer buying it 2 show Nintendo to get with the times. The reason Nintendo doesn’t evolve is because u fan boys make excuses say use Skype and just except it.

    1. Besides… The fact that Smash Bros turns off voice chat when in an actual game was disappointing. We didn’t get to hear each other’s pain and suffering and bursts of uncontrollable laughter or praise until after the actual match, and by then it was just recalling a recent memory and not as enjoyable.

  18. No voice chat means I’m not buying! The promblem with Nintendo sites, reviewers, and magazine articles is they suck up to nintendo when it comes to review scores. Splatoon will probably get a 8 or a 9 but without voice chat it should score 5, mario kart, smash, etc should all be scored on the experience without chat which would be incredibly lower than what they got, just saying this game is great but without voice chat that’s a shame 10/10 is just a cop out! Once reviews start to slam Nintendo games for not having voice chat then and only then will Nintendo start using it!

  19. ….now I lost interest in this game. Voice chat is potent for shooters and these paranoid numb fucks are ruining the standard of it for Splatoon. I’m sorry but now I’m done with waiting for this game. There’s always Devil’s Third anyway.

I was slowly losing interest in this game for awhile now so this is just one more reason why I won’t bother with the game. There better be some way to communicate using the Gamepad like number coded or color coded markers to represent a teammate you’re referring to to let them know to cover a certain area or the lack of voice chat will be a huge problem for people that want to play the game strategically with their teammates.
