Nintendo Reveals Some New Details About Splatoon And Its Various Game Modes

Nintendo’s upcoming third-person action shooter game for the Wii U console, combines elements of shooting, strategy and action – and original new characters, Inklings, that can instantaneously transform between human and squid form. Splatoon gives players the goal of covering as much territory as possible with their ink-spewing weapons. The game, which is scheduled to launch in May, features four-on-four online team matches, as well as a full single-player mode that takes players deeper into the game’s unique world and characters.

The game’s main online mode is Turf War, in which players with broadband Internet access can compete head-to-head in four-on-four teams to try to cover as much territory as possible in their team’s ink. As they do battle, players will gain levels and earn in-game currency that allows them to customize their Inkling. Players can equip different pieces of clothing, which each provide different game-play perks like swimming more quickly through ink or decreasing the time needed for them to refill their ink canister. Players can also equip pre-determined weapon sets consisting of main weapons like rapid-fire ink guns, long-range ink rifles and paint rollers, as well as sub-weapons like ink bombs or sprinklers. Players can also fill up their special gauge in battle to unleash powerful special weapons for a brief period of time. Players will battle in a variety of online multiplayer maps, including the newly announced Blackbelly Skatepark, Saltspray Rig and Walleye Warehouse.

For the first time, Nintendo also revealed a new multiplayer mode called Ranked Battle, which keeps track of each player’s online ranking. Splat Zones is one of the additional ways to play online in this mode. As opposed to Turf War, which will be available to all players as soon as they begin playing Splatoon, Splat Zones lets players try to control the territory of specific areas of the map with their ink blasts. As they play these ranked modes online, they will have the opportunity to increase their rating from “C-” to “A+,” which will be dynamically updated based on their performance. Players will need to achieve an in-game online Level of 10 by leveling up their Inkling in Turf War online matches before gaining access to these additional modes. As a result, once the game launches in May, Nintendo will track the global progress of players as they gain levels, and once a critical mass of players has achieved Level 10, this additional mode will be unlocked for players who meet the ranking criteria.

The single-player mode in Splatoon lets players use the game’s mechanics to explore the underground base of the game’s army of octopi antagonists, the Octarians, in original stages that test their ability to shoot, jump and splatter ink. Players can tackle a variety of levels with a variety of clever devices that can only be found in single-player mode. Each of the game’s single-player stages are designed to let players master tips and techniques that can be directly applied to the game’s multiplayer modes.

  1. Splatoon, it’s a bit too uncomfortable to see the movements of the squid people, I sort of have to squint my eyes to put focus on them. First no voice chat, now character movement is dizzy, what else, huh?

      1. This game DOES make you dizzy with those squid movements, always turning the camera, not knowing where paint is going, it’s too dizzy!! Nintendo tried to win us over with those flicky camera and character movements, but I notice it, and maybe you do too. Also how do you know where you’re going when your character is always under paint, lol.

    1. Voice chat while watching gameplay demos:

“Hello, good, sir. Would you like some tea and crumpets? Oh, quite sorry: forgot my priorities. Ahem: Would you mind moving over to that box over there, so that the enemy will not outflank me?”

“Quite! good sir. And no need for apologies. There! Got you covered. Go on ahead!”

Voice chat while watching average gamers:

“FUUUUUUUCK! Don’t you fucking know what that mother fucking button does mother fucker!”

“rofl Why you so mad bro?”

“Cause you’re my fucking bitch, that’s why.”

      “lol it’s just a game.”

“Yeah, and thank you for being my bitch on i— fuck! Now you got my killed, fucker!”

“lmao. Not MY fault you were distracted, cunt.”

  3. Lol I suppose I was a few minutes late on trying to share this info. Either way the game looks so fun. The no voice chat thing is just really unfortunate. Still, online is an big emphasis in Splatoon which is unheard of for Nintendo. Baby steps I guess…

      1. But the main focus of Mario Kart’s overall marketing has never been online. Even in most of the commercials for Mario Kart games they promote local multiplayer/couch co-op. Splatoon was first revealed as an online third person shooter with a twist. The single player mode wasn’t even announced at E3. They’ve been allowing/including online multiplayer in some games for a while now but for once it’s the main attraction.

  4. Glad there’s more than one online mode or things would have got boring pretty fast. I find it silly that you have to be a certain level in order to play them, but perhaps it’s to make sure the people playing it have a certain amount of experience with the game mechanics and controls.

  5. Online multiplayer is awesome and all, but presumably there will be plenty of decent options for offline multiplayer? I see no reason why this game couldn’t have an 8 player option, like Smash, where teammates just have to stay fairly close – or maybe in an area that can be entirely on screen at once.

May not be as good or popular as multiplayer options online or with fewer players but should still be option. Hope there’s also an option to play multiplayer modes with bots, not just being limited to the single player compaign for solo play.

    1. your commander has been added to sasori’s puppet collection
puppets and kid puppets will be forgiven. nintendrones will perish with the weapons of poison in sasori’s body. “DON’T CALL ANYBODY”

    1. I hate people like u reason Nintendo will never evolve cuz u except it ohh use Skype fuck no shouldn’t have 2

      1. its a waste of resources u can easly use another device i mean who doesn’t have a phone these days your just mad cuz the other consoles have it that’s really the reason why your complaining seriously its unnecessary this isn’t cod bro

        1. UNNECESSARY!? THIS IS SPLATOON. How would VOICE CHAT be unnecessary!? I am so sorry that you dont have a brain to realize what you just said. You’re basically expecting everyone who buys Splatoon to have a Skype account just to talk to your teammates, when it should already be a feature in the game. Ugh. So sad.

I’m really not surprised Nintendo would exclude voice chat tho. They really like keeping their fans safe. No wonder Wii U sales are shitty af.

  6. The only thing keeping me from buying this game at launch is that we lack information from Nintendo Direct about all of the game’s core functionality.

We need a Splatoon Direct at this point. Same with Xenoblade Chronicles X.

The lack of modes was an issue at first for me, but I realized it’s for matchmaking purposes in case the game doesn’t sell like Mario Kart or Super Smash Bros. does. But it’s not looking to be that way because the game really does seem like it’s going to be a niche title.

But, I don’t want people to take that negatively. Though I regard Cave Story as a masterpiece, I also recognize that as niche. Phantasy Star Online 2? Bayonetta 2? Same deal.

Some games like Splatoon exist to cater to a very specific audience, and it’s these types of experimental ideas that games introduce that help push innovation in the industry as a whole.

  7. WOOHOO! I can’t wait to play online and work out awesome startegies with my friends over voicecha-…oh…wait…

…well I suppose everyone can just run around and hope their team doesn’t duck the big one…smh Nintendo…you will never learn… (yeesh, I’m still waiting to be able to play online team battles in Smash Bros. with a friend who isn’t sitting right fu***ng next to me..)

      1. lol, I’m 28, have owned every Nintendo console and work in the game industry. Be quiet before I get your mom, kid.

I play Smash Bros. daily and continue to support Nintendo and all the dev’s I find to be making the gaming world a more fun/lively environment.

…that said, no voice-chat is a joke. Nintendo makes great games, but they lack any sort of common sense when it comes to their fans and the players in the gaming industry on a whole. Even former employees of Nintendo have talked at length over how the head honchos lack any modern-day gamer knowledge…and how it takes a year for anything to get moving. They’re slow, and old at the top…and it’s hurting their progression. Doesn’t mean I don’t like them. I’m just not some vapant fanboy without any original thoughts on how to improve the company that I hold dear.

Now, go play with your blocks.

        *drops mic*

  8. Its so sad when Nintendo fanboys say “USE SKYPE YOU WHINERS” like no we shouldnt even have to use fucking skype. Its 2015 and still no voice chat. This game lost a little value when they announced it doesnt have it. There are so many Youtube videos making fun of this dumbass mistake.

If you dont want voice chat, maybe you can, idk, TURN IT THE FUCK OFF!?
Nice to see Nintendo protecting and pampering their fanboys from the cruel world tho.

    1. Exactly. Just because Skype and other forms of communication exist doesn’t mean you forgo your own form that would instantly encompass the entire Splatoon community. How the hell do you get a unified community together when everyone has to “Frankenstein” their options on communication.

That’s like buying a board-game without dice and having the owner tell you that you can just write numbers on paper and pull them out of a hat….IT’S THE SAME, I SWEAR!!

  11. No voice-chat sucks, I shouldn’t have to rely on Skype especially when my PC is in my bedroom and my Wii U is in the basement or the living room. No, it’s not a laptop and I don’t wish to have a laptop around me while I play because I already have enough cords tangled around as it is.

Regardless I still want this game for what it offers but I will remain watchful since I don’t see many online multiplayer modes. So far just two and a single player campaign.

Before anyone tries to shut me up, if voice-chat is left as an option you won’t have to deal with screaming kids or whatever people bring up when it comes to COD.

  12. this is going to be a great game people must have it is very original, i think that nintendo is giving good games to the players, this an example, is a new Ip, i havent seen this before. Nintendo fans must have this. Is different and so fun it can become popular but it depends on nintendo fans. If you want to support nintendo and also have fun, buy this game. If you dont buy it you are saying “we dont want different game we only want mario and zelda” but if you buy it is a big opportunity that nintendo continue making new and different games.
Note: ( i like mario and zelda but we know this games are different and can help attract other costumers)
