Retro Studios New Game For Wii U Could Be Using A New Engine

https://twitter.com/Doctor_Cupcakes/status/583694290821447680

We know that Retro Studios is hard at work on their next project since releasing the fantastic Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. We knew that much since February last year. However, Liam Robertson from Unseen64 has tweeted that after doing a bit of digging it turns out that their next game for Wii U will be using a brand new engine. It’s unlikely they would be using a new engine if it was another game in the Donkey Kong Country line. New Metroid anyone?

      1. You mean it’s Donkey Kong Country: Arctic Heat wave!
Get it… Tropical Freeze, Arctic heat…. You know what, never mind.

      2. More like Dankey Kang Country: K. Rool’s Return… Just Kidding! It’s really some reanimated rocks with Googley eyes coming to steal your bananas for some weird reason…

      1. troll. if you bothered to play DK TF you would know it’s an excellent game. Fucking Rayman is the shitty rip-off game.

        1. pink0crystal0midbus

Neither game is a rip off of each other. Rayman’s games are nothing like Donkey Kong except for the “forest scenery.” But, in that aspect, a LOT of side-scrolling games would be rip-offs of DKC.

      2. Hahahah. Oh man. I hate to laugh but to be honest i am disappointed in nintendo lately. Mainly the lack of games. I mean cmon? splatoon to hold us over until Yoshi in September! That’s 5 months of nothing. I feel bad for people that aren’t interested in Splatoon or Yoshi. They really gotta wait even longer. There’s not enough variety. Not saying they don’t make wonderful amazing games that do vary in gameplay genre but let’s face it people. it wouldn’t hurt to have more third party support. I as a Wii U only owner am sorely missing Mortal Kombat X, The Crew, Rainbow Six… Etc..

          1. Nintendo Tetrarch Quadramus-NX

            >>>Mortal Kombat X is a joke, it is nothing like real MK games anymore, even inviting non MK characters that have no reason being in the game and as a cheap marketing>>>

            1. I can’t speak on that… I haven’t seen a good fighter in a long time and the MK before this was pretty good and I don’t see having those other characters as taking away from the integrity of the game, IF the gameplay mechanics are good.

Still, I am a Virtua Fighter fan, so nothing to me has really added to that 360 fighting experience

          1. ALSO it was rumored diddy kong racing 2 would be developed by monster games, not retro (if im not mistaken)

        1. Cry me a fucking river. Devil’s Third, Fatal Frame, Rodea The Sky Solider, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Starfox, Splatoon, Mario Maker. No fucking variety there. If you hate Wii U so much: Sell it, get a fucking real job and buy a PS4/XBone and enjoy your glorious third party games. Bitch and moan…..

        2. The Wii U is the best Second console to get…

im from Venezuela so i can’t afford too many games per year so i had no problems getting a Wii U as my first console on this generation….even so…I would recommend anyone to get a PS4 then get a Wii U….

        3. Exactly finally someone understands, I’m one of those people that will be in a long drought, thanks to Nintendo I’ll be dead of boredom by the time any serious games out the i wanna play i.e star fox and Devil’s Third.
there isn’t enough variety going on for Nintendo, so far i got mario kart smash and Bayonetta to hold me over but coming out with a game every other five months is just Fucking ridiculous! Nintendo needs third party support and i don’t understand all the fans that say they’re happy without any because it makes no sense. Even on my GameCube i had literally TONS of games to hold me over and i loved it so much but i don’t think this console will last if they keep up there business plan already. They should make a poll on which games wiiu owners want to play this year so i get a fair shot at playing something i actually wanna play

          1. glad to hear you have plenty time in your hand in fact I envy you. That said some people have job/uni/college to attend to as well have a social life and for other, parenting duties on the top of that.

So one can understand why some people are not fuss or even glad they are not too many games out for this system. Personally I still have lot of catch up to do on the wii, PS3 and PC then I still have lot of NDS/GBA games, PSP to play. So I am not really mad about the lack of games.

    1. Fucking… Codename S.T.E.A.M, Splatoon, The Wonderful 101… we have more new IPs from Nintendo than we ever had, yet people are still complaining.

      1. I want something new, too. Gamers who aren’t a bunch of miserable, whining fucks who love hearing themselves bitch and moan about everything that doesn’t satisfy their pathetic little needs.

  1. Id eventually like a proper sequel to donkey kong 64 that uses elements from mario 3d world, and dkc returns&tropical freeze.

  2. It was rumored a long time ago that the we’re working on a new engine. I hope I can find that link.

  3. I got a feeling that it’s gonna be either a new IP or a massive open world Metroid game that will differiate itself from the Prime series. I don’t think they’re hiring former Naughty Dog and Vigil Games developers for Diddy Kong Racing 2 but we’ll see…….hopefully at E3 this year

    1. pink0crystal0midbus

I have gotten a vibe lately that it could be Diddy Kong Racing for Wii U. Diddy wasn’t in Mario Kart 8, Nintendo recently acquired the rights to Timber the Tiger from Microsoft (one of the Rare-owned characters from Diddy Kong Racing) and the new game that Rare is developing has a brand new engine and while I can totally see that being the case for “any” game, I also see it as a necessity for making a brand new Kart game that could land on the Wii U after Mario Kart 8’s release.

At least, if Retro isn’t making a new Diddy Kong Racing, then “someone” is. If it’s not Retro, then I would expect Retro to be making Metroid. I would be shocked if Retro wasn’t making EITHER games and were making a new IP, because that would mean Metroid and Diddy Kong Racing are being made by some other developers and who in the world could that be?

Unless they aren’t making Metroid or DKR…. but, no Metroid would be SO STUPID and all the evidence points to a new DKR.

      We’ll see at E3 I’m betting.

    1. 1. It is not obvious lol they could be using unreal 3 or 4 if the game is a new metroid prime like game since the other games used the unreal engine
      2. Or it could be a new engine who knows rumors aren’t facts

  4. 1. It was rumored a while ago that the game may be using a new in house engine
    2. It was also rumored that it could be Diddy Kong racing 2
    3. Retro have been working on a game since November of 2013 or earlier so I can’t wait to see what is they will show
    4. It could obviously be a brand new in
    5. It’s funny how all because we haven’t had a new metroid game in years people assume the franchise is dead and will never come back and other stupid shit just like how I was saying before just wait lol
    6. Also it’s funny how many people want a new metroid game out of nowhere when metroid was/possibly is still not a talked about franchise in regards to other nintendo franchises
    7. All of these people talking and wanting a new metroid game better get it day one or as soon as you can because all because people have a supposed high demand for the next game doesn’t mean a lot of people will buy the game
    8. If a metroid releases this year I will get it possibly before or after xenoblade chronicles X and the shin megami crossover whenever it releases and I’m a big fan of the series

    1. I would get the new metroid before day one if I could. it’s already been 5 years, it took 10 years before a new one was released after super metroid. we don’t need to wait anoter 5 years before we get something again and we have as much right to ask for a metroid as all the f-zero and mother fans.

  5. While Nintendo can disappoint sometimes, they can equally suprise you. Honestly nothing can be taken off the table for E3. Do I think it will be a Metroid game? No. Do I hope it will be? Yes.

  6. JTZ from tribe of Judah

I’d rather they told us what game they were working on rather than tell us it’s on an all new engine. By the time the game is unveiled no one will remember the new engine let alone give a damn.

  7. I keep forgetting I have Tropical Freeze. I got it on my last birthday and only played a few stages. I have too many games.

    1. Me too. I’m probably the only person who wasn’t that disappointed Zelda U isn’t coming out this year. I need to finish some games off first. Wind Waker, Wonderful 101, Both Bayonetta’s, DKTF, Capt Toad, and Kirby is becoming difficult in the cloud world. I keep on playing Smash Bros and MK8 so much, I never get a chance to finish the other games. Lol

      1. Jtz from Judah Tribe

I’m glad it is delayed. That tells me Nintendo is starting to think in their R&D instead of making something and selling it without thinking.

Since Nintendo owns Timber put a backpack on his back with some bird inside it and make Timber-Kablooie.

    1. I’d like that. I’d like to see Retro truly come up with something original.

There are many companies capable of doing Metroid. The fans need to lose their fixation on the idea that only Retro can do Metroid.

        1. pink0crystal0midbus

Retro’s first game was Metroid Prime. So yes, all of Retro’s games are owned by Nintendo and they don’t have any games that were made before Nintendo acquired them.

Originally they had four games in development for the Gamecube and were meant to be exclusives for Nintendo’s platform, but when the company showed Shigeru Miyamoto the games, he wasn’t impressed and so they were cancelled. Instead, he asked if they wanted to make a new Metroid game and thus, Retro Studios was born. Nintendo bought out the majority of their stock the same year Metroid Prime was released in 2002.

  9. Please be Metroid. I was disappointed they made DKC:TF, because I don’t care for Donkey Kong games and they already made DKC Returns like a few years before…

It was like, “oh I waited this long for a Rare game and it’s a game I don’t even want to play… Now I have to wait longer for the game I actually want -_-“

      1. pink0crystal0midbus

I guess, but they went crazy with the Donkey Kong games. When they were releasing DK Country 3D, they should have been doing a Metroid game, not “another” Donkey Kong game.

I wouldn’t have minded if Nintendo had another developer do it, it doesn’t have to be Retro, but seeing as we’ve waited this long it looks like they wanted Retro to make the next Metroid, but Retro wanted to do Donkey Kong instead, which effectively made DK the reason why we haven’t seen Metroid in so long.

For people who don’t like DK and like Metroid, it was like “What the hell!”

          1. pink0crystal0midbus

Said on Wikipedia that they co-developed it… IDK. Maybe someone sees Retro’s name in the end credits?

            1. Nintendo Tetrarch Quadramus-NX

              >>>They are just credited since they created it first, and just because some of you got disappointed that it was a second DKC game, doens’t mean everyone else was, whenever I can I’ll buy Tropical Freeze because I liked Returns and although I worship Metroid, having a facility make the same series again and again tires them at some point and they’ll start to lose creativity and effort and become just like the Electrons and Ubisians>>>

    1. and by “Rare” i meant “Retro.” I get their names confused sometimes, because they are both legendary developers and they are both short words that start with the letter “R.”

  10. I can only hope that they are working on some brand new Metroid game – even it is just a cooperation with other insider N-dev teams, or in full time… C’mon Retro, you’re the best who is able to do an excellent Samus Aran adventure ;-)
