Legend Of Kay Anniversary Will Now Output At 1080p For Wii U

It was first confirmed by Peter Thierolf from Kaiko that the new Legend of Kay Anniversary edition would be in 720p for the Wii U. But now after some more development, they’ve upgraded it to 1080p. They’ve said that it now “renders the scene in 1600*900 and outputs in 1080p with extra crisp UI” and still runs at 60fps. The Legend of Kay will be releasing this Summer.

      1. thx for that kind and helpfull awnser. it’s nice to see that people don’t expect me to know every game that came out on a system I never owned or was interested in..

      2. It was just a question. Maybe he this is the first time he has seen an article related to this game. No need to act like such a tool about it…

    1. Fuck Yeah! Those are some remasters I’d actually want. Do a combo pack in HD uncensored. Lol. Like that would ever happen. I’m looking forward to Fatal Frame.

  1. Considering that they’re barely updating the game it would be inexcusable for them to not make it 1080p, if Wind Waker did it there is no reason why ANY gen 6 remake can’t do it.

        1. The game itself is rendered at 900p, but other elements (like the UI) are rendered in 1080p. So yeah, the game is rendered at 900p and upscaled, but the the console is still producing a final image that is 1080p with a few elements that weren’t even upscaled.

  2. Why aren’t they upgrading the textures more? The Wii U could totally handle it and everyone knows it. I get why they did it in Windwaker (to keep the artsyle which I’m SO glad about) but why this game?

    1. Nordic Games is a minor studio in terms of resources, especially compared to, say, Nintendo. & the low price for Legend of Kay is proportional to the work being done on an updated port. Legend of Kay will be new to me, & should have plenty of content seeing as how it was made before DLC, microtransactions, rampant multiplatting, & (in some cases) trojan services were necessary to offset bloated budgets. While upgrading the textures would be easiER for a game like LoK, it apparently wasn’t top priority, even if this game is not as financially draining as “AAA”.

More importantly, though, the gameplay & aesthetics fit w/ console-gaming, or @ least the core precedent. It’s what got me into gaming & keeps me hooked, so I hope these games make a comeback. If it were a brand new game, then better textures would be a bigger priority, but it should prove that feasible goals can pay off, both for publishers & gamers alike.

      1. Most of the textures were actually reworked, but the new textures are very true to the original ones in style, which is why the visual difference isn’t that big. They were mostly reworked to have a higher resolution and suit the new HD aesthetics, but a lot of effort was still put into them (give the few artists the dev team has). However, you’re right when you say that the textures weren’t the main focus of the ports. With such a small development team, getting the game out on all the target platforms was quite a task already. And with a game like Legend of Kay, that isn’t very widely known, a higher budget wouldn’t have been reasonable. It just can’t be compared to other high-profile ports like Wind Waker HD, the circumstance are completely different.

  3. hey lets make a legend of zelda rip off for ps2,instead of it starring a male protagonist, who have a fox take the role, and we call it legend of kay,lol freaking zelda wannabe.

    this game is for gays.

    1. I guess that’d make Okami a rip-off of both, except instead of a cat or an elf, Clover chose a wolf. & Okami’s cartoon aesthetics clearly ripped off Wind Waker. Nintendo should never have let Capcom work on Zelda games, or let Okami be ported to Wii. Hel, Nintendo should’ve put the kibosh on both Legend of Kay & Okami. Yet, Twilight Princess was apparently a knockoff of Okami (already a Zelda rip-off) by actually using a wolf. Don’t get me started on what knockoffs Sphinx & The Cursed Mummy & Star Fox Adventures were. Yeah, I played them & my experiences were in many ways the same as a 3D Zelda games. It’s just too bad they were Action-Adven–I mean rip-offs that were inspired by–I mean that were knockoffs of 3D Zelda games. I had fun, but they ripped me off.

But how dare Clover Studios & Neon Studios use a formula that has become a standard in the Action-Adventure genre. You don’t see 3rd parties doing that sorta thing now; Hel no, Hollywood produces the inexpensive knockoffs. Did they think it was an FPS, or something? Only that genre is allowed to have multiple franchises but w/ the same types of characters, weapons, gameplay, & even stories & enemies.

& of course Link is a ripoff of Peter Pan. Oh no…does, does that mean D-d-donkey Kong is a…rip-off of-of…the King Kong character? Say it ain’t so. Guess I’m stuck watching the original rather than playing the knockoff. Man, Nintendo ripped me off so many times. I had so much fun I hadn’t noticed I was being ripped off by Donkey Kong.

& all modern 3D Platformers were knockoffs of Mario 64. Apparently, that genre is reserved for the Mario IP ONLY. Sorry bears, birds, lizards, bats, bandicoots, dragons, limbless people-things, hedgehogs, wolves (Lobodestroyo, another wolf protaganist in another 3D Platformer, & anthropomorphic, too?! Ugh!…well, you’re all apparently knockoffs ripping people off. If only there were just 1 franchise representing each genre; that would be so wonderfully bland. But that way, if you disliked Mario or Zelda, you’d either be forced to play their games, or stay away from that genre altogether because anything else would be a knockoff & a ripp-off. If you disliked Metroid but loved ‘metroidvania’, well… apparently stick w/ Metroid or get ripped off (the term ‘metroidvania’ should’ve already made it clear that it’s the knockoff).

Oh, & just because Legend of Kay uses an anthropomorphic cat (he’s not a fox), doesn’t mean he’s genderless. So a male protagonist does star in Legend of Kay. & because Zelda uses an elf that closely resembles humans, is all the more reason to change that aspect, which might lead to other changes in the formula, both big & small.

      1. The funniest thing about this is that Legend of Kay doesn’t even play like Legend of Zelda. Yeah, you do beat enemies up with a sword, but aside from that the game plays more like a platformer with a linear storyline. But who could blame Aeolus? The games both have “Legend of” in the title, so of course one must be a rip-off…

  4. Sucks that this game isn’t coming out for 360 never played it even when I had my ps2 should be on all 5 consoles

    1. I know, right?
I wouldn’t have thought that taking time on a game would make the game better.

  5. Makes you think though.
If these devs can upgrade the game from 720p to 1080p on Wii U for a game that was originally a PS2 game, then why can’t other devs take the time and do the same?

  6. Still confused over the hype for this. I never heard of this back when it originally came out. Never. It was also on a completely different company’s console too, wasn’t it? I would have expected quite a bit more acidity from people here about that :/

    1. “Still confused over the hype for this.”

For me, I enjoy Action-Adventure games & 3D Platformers, especially from 6th gen, when they were @ their peak. Nowadays, 3rd parties have left that formula up to indies & Nintendo (whose main focus there is Zelda). So Legend of Kay’s re-release is somewhat of a rarity just in those terms.

What’s also rare: not only the 3rd-party support for Wii U, but a game that’s in a genre (or 2) & uses an aesthetic that’s suited to Wii U (@ least in my eyes). Seems Nordic Games is betting on the tastes of Wii U’s userbase, rather than trying to push their own agenda onto that userbase.

“I never heard of this back when it originally came out. Never.”

I doubt I did either. I certainly missed out on playing it, but that makes this game new to me. Couple that w/ the low price, & I’m wanting LoK even more.

“It was also on a completely different company’s console too, wasn’t it?”

Yep, it was on PS2, but also ported to DS (which supposedly left a lot to be desired). I own 5 Nintendo home-consoles, starting w/ Super NES. But I also own a Saturn & a PS1. I wish I’d also gotten a Dreamcast & PS2 when they were released. SEGA & Sony platforms offered many of the same types of games Nintendo platforms did, but they still maintained their own unique qualities & exclusives, unlike PS360 & especially PS4/X1/PC. For starters, LoK was an exclusive on PS2, & for 5 years before being ported to DS.

“I would have expected quite a bit more acidity from people here about that :/”

I for 1 am fine w/ multiplats & HD treatments, as long as they:

Fit the platform’s demographic (or are an uncommon sample of what another userbase likes),
Each port is treated relatively equal (I do find it strange that the PS4/PC ports might be less than ideal since those userbases emphasize graphics & resolution so much),
Multiplats are more the exception to the rule,
& the HD treatment is for a game from @ least 2 gens ago, especially if the current platform is reverse-compatible.

    2. Not having heard about a game doesn’t neccessarily mean the game is bad. Just think about Shantae on Game Boy Color. Noone had heard about the game back when it was first released. Yet many years later, when they started making new entries to the series as download games on DSi and 3DS, the franchise all of a sudden became really popular – because Shantae was a good game to begin with. It was just overlooked because it was released at a bad time.
