Respected Japanese news publication The Nikkei is reporting that the Nintendo NX will use an Android based operating system. The move to Android sounds like a plausible one with the source stating that it allows “developers more flexibility in making content that can also be on smartphones and tablets.” The source also said that “when third parties abandoned Nintendo’s Wii U one by one, it caused turning point in the company. So while they have had a philosophy of developing their own software and hardware concepts internally for all these years, they are now prepared to embrace a more open platform with Android.”
Thanks to everyone who sent this in

I’m probably the only one who doesn’t like the sound of this
Read my comment and you’ll see why this ISN’T a bad idea.
Because a fanboy like you says so? Android is SHIT.
Android nor ios is bad they just different. There are many operating systems. They are all subjective.
Except Android is shit and its software selection is straight up laughable. Even Xbox Marketplace isn’t as terrible but still as lackluster.
Subjective. All has their points. I don’t like apple products but will never say they not good. Just not my taste. I prefer windows phone but I use android phone right now. I switch phones daily so I use a lot of different operating system. The beauty of using a sim cars.
He’s a just a Sony Pony Apple kid.
I wouldn’t bother with him.
You must be very new here to say that of him, he’s certainly no sony pony agree with him or not.
I never tried Windows but I seriously hate the layout they adapted from my most hated platform: Xbox. The dashboard is such an eyesore that it killed the original Start Menu from Windows.
Nothing looks worse then IOS
Damn lol why you have so many phones? For work? Nothing wrong with it just curious lol.
I use to work for AT&T and it became a habit to do it. Some days I will break out an old school phone and use it.
Cool lol if you worked for a phone company that explains it lol
Explains why most phones now a days get Android and how many see it as a superior platform compared to iOS.
And why many are stupid to pick a specific brand that has no difference or advantages at all. Just copy and paste bullshit on a grand scale. And BTW, Android is superior? lol That’s not what I heard from last few quarterly performances in the mobile market which Apple has and still dominates since the iPhone’s dawn. XP Oh and one more thing, Samsung is still losing more of its $1 billion lawsuits from copying iPhone’s hardware designs. Believe me, the world envies Apple more and if it were more open like Android, guess which of the two will win. :3 I rest my case.
“If is were more open”
Which is why it sucks so hard. iOS is closed off more than the preacher’s daughter. Stop sucking Apple’s tits. And what has Apple ever invented? Jack shit.
It doesn’t. Just needed to be more accessible to those who bitch about affording one. Linux is open but do you even hear anyone talk about it or use or is it even featured in any major retailers at all? Apple invents evolution of simplicity which is why they’re huge.
Many of my friends use some sort of Linux-based OS. Maybe that’s why I’m friends with them.
Many of my bullshit meters are ringing when reading this. Nobody even talks about Linux anymore. lol
Favour Apple and shit all over Google & Microsoft while using many of their products everyday in life? You must be Christian.
I don’t even favor everything about Apple. First of all, their Macs are WAY too overpriced compare to other PCs sporting the same specs. I will never buy a Mac period. Second, their iPad Mini 3 update and pricing is bullshit. $100 more for a year old fingerprint sensor? Fuck outta here. Third, Apple Watches, to me, are beyond pointless and overpriced from its base $350 mark when Pepple watches with near customization and Samsung’s Gear being $100 less with more functionality like a camera, Apple’s Watches are a huge waste of time and only true die hard moronic fans would buy it just to look special. I got the exclusive RED iPod Nano 6th gen with wrist strap for only $80 and has more purpose and original functionality than the Watch itself. WTF would I buy their watch when the iPhone already does the same shit and a lot more for its buck? XP
Google compare to Yahoo and others are good. But I will never forgive them for ruining YouTube with its Copyright BS and forcing a dead G+ service as its comment system that’s even more annoying to use than the old version. Microsoft is fine but Windows 8 ruining the old Start Menu was its main drawback. I’m happy with the Surface Pro 3 I luckily got for $630 with the keyboard, stylus, 64GB SD and case. Vista from 2004-5 was their 2nd biggest mistake next to Zune’s failure and making Xbox while trying to be relevant with it.
Still think I’m some extreme Christianity-like fucktard who blindly hates everything? I have my knowledge and reasons to like/approve and dislike/disagree.
Most of that I agree with. Windows 10 may fix that for you. Zunes were and still are better than iPods for music use. A Walkman would be the best option, but for that price tag it can go fuck itself. My HTC One M8 will make ado.
I also congratulate you for not falling to religion and its hypocrisy.
Cut the religious crap. Because I’m not completely into it nor fall for any nonsense.
It’s all nonsense.
You might be right in that Linux is not heavily advertised everywhere, but to say people do not use it or talk it about it, is totally ludicrous. A lot of people still use Linux, and they also still talk about it to this day. Not like you’ll see a ton of people talking about Linux in a Nintendo related site…
Also, not that it is a negative thing at all, but it’s pretty obvious you aren’t that into PC’s. If you’re happy with a tablet PC, which says a lot about how you use a PC, I wouldn’t expect you to know much about people who use Linux. It’s also clear you’re no PC enthusiast if you can get by on a tablet PC, which adds even less credibility to any of your statements regarding Linux since you’ll generally only see really heavy PC enthusiast, people who care about customization, using something like Linux.
Whether you want to accept it or not, just like your arguments against Android vs. iOS. All these different OS’s have their advantages and disadvantages, in the same aspect as their hardware. To say any of these devices or OS’s, including Apple’s, are perfect, would be a complete lie. It might be perfect for your needs, that’s about it.
Also when has popularity ever proved anything? Odd hearing that from you of all people, using popularity as a point. Over 1 billion people listen to Taylor Swift , it doesn’t mean she’s the best musician to ever grace this planet just because of her popularity, and the same applies to anything. Just because something or someone is extremely popular, does not automatically make it or them better, or even good. It’s just popular, it doesn’t mean much outside of that, because of how dumb the general public is. You act like every iOS user or even Android user is using these expensive, over priced phones for anything but basic stupid crap anyway.
I don’t get why anyone would pay over $500 for a phone or anything remotely close to that, when all they’re going to do is take selfies and text. When that is about nearly all anyone does on these expensive phones anyway, whether you’re using iOS or Android really doesn’t make a big enough difference when you realize what most of the population is even doing on these devices.
I also don’t understand why you’d buy a Surface Pro with as much as you talk about Microsoft. So you don’t support Google and their intrusive tactics, but you’ll support Microsoft by buying their products? I don’t get that at all.
And yet, I have never seen even one soul in my life using Linux and the only time that I did was when my DeVry college in NYC gave me a programming book with 4-disc Linux software which I never touched once. That’s it. Nobody mentions much about Linux. It’s Windows, Mac and, unfortunately, that POS Android. X/
How would I not use Google but Microsoft instead? I actually use a bit of both. Just have my share of criticisms from both such as Google ruining YouTube or Microsoft creating that garbage Xbox and conning millions over Xbox Live when it’s nothing more than a double dip of internet usage that’s free everywhere else. I only bought Surface Pro because 1. My old laptop had lived it’s time and 2. I’m moving on from iPad now that the current Surface models finally got their stuff right besides the high price on the Pro models.
Your comment about the purpose of smartphones is exactly what I mean about Android fanboy defenses like customization is being ridiculous. The primary purpose of phones is communication, not to look pretty for shallow peers to like you for a few minutes.
When I switched from feature phones to smartphones, I researched both iPhone & Android. But when I found out iPhone excluded SD-card support, I immediately chose Android (which does support it).
Expandable storage is, well, an option on Android, & it’s less expensive compared to internal storage. & there are many SD card brands to choose from, & I can easily move the contents of my SD card as quickly as I can move the card itself. The music, contacts, & pics I stored on my feature phone went onto my Android. I eventually got more SD storage for my HTC, but I moved its contents to my 1st Samsung, & from there to my latest Samsung. I can easily regulate the amount of storage I need or want. Sadly, Google is pushing to eliminate SD cards (mostly for cloud fees & higher-priced phones). Motorola (still Google) & Samsung seem keen on eliminating SD support, too. But I can still find other Android manufacturers that do support it, which is another option available w/ Android: brands.
Actually, I started w/ HTC, but went to Samsung for my upgrade because newer HTC models ditched SD cards. Now, it looks like Samsung is ditching SD (& they killed the red-underline spellchecker way back on Jelly Bean). But HTC now supports SD again. & yet, I’d still research LG & even Sony models for my next Android upgrade. But, if Nintendo has a phone, & my carrier offers it…
Also, iPhones disallow phone-to-phone Bluetoothing w/ non-iPhones, so I felt that was another unwarrented limit. I’d feel stuck in the iPhone ecosystem.
W/ Android, I can find music just about anywhere, except iTunes. Again, I’d feel stuck in Apple’s world.
Android UI is extremely customizeable (it can even mimic iOS, Windows, & Blackberry). But I prefer to eliminate labels for shortcuts & move everything around to be as pleasing to me as possible. & my wallpaper is even sympatico w/ my layout. My Drawer is organized the way I want, & I hid &/or disabled many apps I’ll never enter or ever manually use.
My Android can multi-task. There’s even Multi-window to have 2 apps on the screen simultaneously. While my phone’s keeping me updated w/ weather, I can be listening to my music & via Bluetooth, while writing a post & reading some texts.
Widgets are convenient. That’s where the weather updates come in, which I just need to look @ on the Home menu, no reason to enter the app. I could include that info in my Status Bar & in my Notification Tray, too.
On the rare occasion I transfer data to my laptop, it’s like moving files from a USB drive or SD card; no extra program necessary. It’s intuitive for me, & I’m in control. Just drag & drop, from internal storage or the phone’s SD card.
Data can be encrypted, & most smartphones have been approved for government use (@ least in the U.S.). That includes Android, Windows, Blackberry, & iPhone.
I started on Android Froyo. Then upgraded to Gingerbread which brought new features & freshened both the root features of Android, & the manufacturer tweaked their own UI overlay. I skipped Ice Cream Sandwhich (wasn’t time to upgrade yet), but when I got Jelly Bean the vast improvements were expected. KitKat was a noticeable improvement, yet Lollipop is a huge improvement; it’s almost like I have a new phone, but all I did was update the OS.
I don’t really have many apps from the Play Store. Just a few to boost the functions of my phone. Chess & Sudoko for the rare occaisions I’m out & about w/ nothing to do. I do wish Androids would stop increasing in size.
Anyway. That all works for me. But, Samsung provides some of the parts for Apple. & many companies, Apple, Android, or otherwise, abuse patents to create monopolies, willingly or not. & some judges are ignorant of the details but preside over those cases anyway. Rulings aren’t about innocence, sadly, but about proof & the abilities, & money of all involved.
I’m pretty sure I’ve been over this with you before about Apple vs. Samsung. So many people have no idea that Samsung manufactures some of the most important parts used in the iPhone, if you people think Apple is making all these parts exclusively, you’re sorely mistaken.
It is just so funny seeing so many iPhone users hate on Samsung and Android all the time, when way over half of them do not even realize, without Samsung, an Android phone maker, the iPhone would not even have the processors or chips it has, which according to many iPhone users, are the best processors used in phones… How ironic.
It is even very likely Samsung will again be manufacturing most of the chips and the processors for the new iPhone’s, and even iPad’s in the future as well… So to know that, you’ll realize how dumb that lawsuit was to begin with and how ridiculous it is for you to be claiming every Android phone is shit, if that was truly the case, I guess Apple wouldn’t need Samsung’s help. Yes, trying suing the people who manufacture the most important parts you use in your device, very wise.
Why bring up such retarded instances, to prove your point, anyway? The Apple vs. Samsung lawsuit was beyond stupid, and it’s been over with since last year. Considering the design of just about almost every smart phone, the lawsuit was ridiculous to start off with. If they’re going to try to sue Samsung, why not sue every person who made a smartphone after the iPhone? Why anyone would support such stupidity, I really don’t know.
It’s like supporting the idea of all these morons constantly trying to sue Nintendo over such trivial nonsense.
I’m not saying which is better either, it’s all totally subjective. I’m just making the point that a lot of these arguments here, against Android vs. iPhone, are just pointless. Even more so when one of the major Android phone makers, provides the chips and processors the iPhone even uses. I could understand if the iPhone was entirely made by Apple, you could then build more valid arguments, but they aren’t.
So can you people move on and just realize you prefer what you use more over another person, and not everyone is going to think or feel exactly the same way you do, about every single thing.
Did I ever say they invented everything themselves? lol Now you’re starting to twist my own words and thoughts. I already knew Samsung was the one manufacturing (not created) their A-series processors.
The lawsuit was mainly because Samsung infringed Apple’s outer iPhone designs. In fact, I’ve even seen an iPad mini ripoff from Acer running Android right now.
Plus, I never said Android PHONES are shit. I said Android OS itself is shit. Again, twisting my words. XP
You obviously know NOTHING about Android if you say something stupid like that, you idiot.
Mmm, dat salt.
Seriously, go play on you PSBore or something.
That PSBore has the exclusives and popularity that your broken ass Xbox will never have. No wonder it dropped its price more than its shitty hardware failing on itself.
The same was said about Wii U before they announced it, and now we know it wasn’t true… So, I’d take it with a grain of salt
They reported that for the Wii U and it turned out false. I could see them building off android like amazon did for Kindle and fire products. But it wont be like OUYA were you well have access to the play store
Fuck Android and FUCK Google.
Fuck you too!
1. That would be really good for Nintendo
2. There was a rumor that Nintendo talked to 3rd parties a year or two ago so I’d
3. Can’t wait for xenonblade chronicles x news at en and I still need to look at play through
4. I won’t be getting the game for a while since I will be getting a vita and playing freedom wars and other rpgs on the vita but will definitely get the game when I can maybe even day one
A DEAD CONSOLE VITA O.O ???
He’s replacing a dying console for a dead one. Why are you so surprised? Lol
Haha
1. No one isn’t replacing anything dumbass now my little bring has a win u that I barely play at all because he rarely buys games and the only game I’m getting is going to be a physical copy of chronicles X
2. I don’t care if people say the vita is complete shit or the worst console of all time if there are games on any system I would want to play then I will most likely get that system so eat shit god
XD relax tourettes #2, unbunch your panties, and take a deep breath. Its just a joke XD
honestly i like the vita i dont have one but i want one so i can play console games on the go that isnt on the 3ds ie minecraft terraria spelunky
You can get one for like $180 now with Borderlands 2. If you have Plus it pretty much pays for itself in that year. Specially since a lot of the vita games go on sale (digitally) pretty often and you can pick them up for like $5 (if you have Plus.)
1. Gasp yes there are several rpgs I would like to play on the system that are already on the system and guess what more are coming
Kinda surprise.
Interesting, this could allow the Nintendo NX to have games with cross-platform functionality. Your console interacts with your Android devices, and opens the door for easy 3rd party support.
I don’t care what Nintendo does with the NX. As long as it’s a true next gen console, and they keep a steady flow of AAA games, and NEVER make any of their major games go digital only.
Same
What is a true next gen console lol
A console that can not only play Nintendo’s first parties, but can also play any developers game with an easy to use architecture. Yes, developers can develop for the Wii U, as we can see with all the indies, but most third parties don’t make a lot with the Nintendo crowd and don’t want to develop for it. With that said there are still people who want third parties, so the least Nintendo could do to help them out is make an easy to use architecture similar to the other consoles. I don’t agree with using an Android OS or any phone or tablet OS, but it’s somewhat a step in the right direction. A console that isn’t focused on gimmicks. The Wii was a success, but it’s time to move away from stuff like that. The Wii U almost accomplished that once the pro controller came out, but the Gamepad, while fun for some games, still takes away from that. Some other little plusses would be a blue ray player and CD player. Those things are being slightly replaced with streamers such as Hulu, Netflix, and CrunchyRoll (why it took us over a gen to get that one is beyond me), but it would definitely help sell consoles. People are looking for simplicity, they want one device that can do it all. That doesn’t mean Nintendo next console has to be 50% media centered and 50% game centered, but it’s definitely a feature I rather have than another gimmick. A console that can hold 1080 and 60fps. Nintendo has done that just fine, so there’s no reason to focus on that. A system with no limits or restrictions. If I want to play a game from Japan then I should be able to, or if I want to play an M rated game I should be able to at least with a parental consent or whatever I should be able to instead of locking up the content completely. Just put it behind a password like Apple. Nintendo needs to stop being the parents for their gamers with a lot of their features and games alike. Nintendo does a lot right as far as their video games (besides the fact that they’re making more and more games child friendly) go, but their consoles need some work. I would never want them to go software only, but they do need to stay up with the times. And if you read this whole thing you deserve a cookie, because I did nothing but rant on what Ninty has done wrong. Xp
Totally agree. As long as Nintendo doesn’t go full retard mode and do something incomprehensible like make a digital only system (that would probably be the day modern gaming dies for me), doesn’t go ape shit with DLC and basically only considers “supporting mobile gaming” the equivalent of tossing them a watered down port of something maybe once a year, then I shouldn’t have to much to hate on the NX, though I will admit outside of the rumors of it being a console-handheld hybrid, I really cant say I am that excited or looking forward to it.
Well that was unexpected. As much as I like Android, I’m not sure if their architecture is enough for a dedicated gaming system. Then again, we do have the Nvidia Shield as a basis, so it could work.
Ok, I get it, the rumours about the NX being a hybird home/portable console are true. The portable part is your mobile phone! It’s what the Wii U should have been.
It will not be a hybrid but a series line like iPhone and ipad. Multiple hardware. I watt already explained that.
Iwata explained it. Sorry auto correct.
I’m not sure this is a horrible idea.
Let’s consider that Nintendo is dying in the third party world.
Let’s also assume that they are play store approved so no third party store which opens up every android devolper to make games for nx
Let’s also assume that it will be the most powerful android platform for gaming when it launches. That is very exciting considering what developers are doing with the Mobil market
However before anyone beats me to it I will say the ooya (or whatever it was called) was not that amazing
I’m going for optimistically hopeful
As long as it works with iOS devices too. That’s a big market to lose.
It should not be able to work with that piece of shit OS.
Might be a piece of shit to you (I honestly don’t care for it either,) but its a huge part of the mobile market to miss.
Well you cared enough to comment so… yeah
He is saying that ios is still important……yes it is crap……i am pro android…..apple devices are way behind. The reason that nintendo would need to also go ios though is because of the amount of people with ios. When you try to tell someone with an iphone that there os system is outdated and they should switch to android (for real though, that iphone six just got the latest spec of my galaxy s3 from 2012 and it is still a down grade form the s3. I have an s5 and they try to tell me there camera and screen is better. REALLY, my screen has a way higher resolution and is super amoled plus my camera is 4k with 16 megapixel, not really needed but still cool to have). Anyways. Most of the time they tell you android sucks and is confusing. Then i tell them they just can’t work a real device that is not just meant for basic use so old people dont complain.
That I don’t care for iOS, not his comment. ;D
It’s not. It works as intended if your dumbass ever tried it. I even tried Android and learned it’s still shit the first time I saw it and its software, compare to Apple App Store, is a fucking joke.
Damn, sucking Steve Jobs cock any more he’d probably cum back from the grave.
Nice going on disrespecting a game changing dead man who passed from cancer which is never funny. More recently, Joe Biden just lost his son to cancer so are you gonna joke about that now jerkoff?
Wow. I have to agree with Stranga. That was a bit too far. I know you have a little adorable feud going on with him but yeah. Not cool, man.
Although, I will admit that joke, while in bad taste, was not bad for a joke. But yeah. Too soon. At least wait til Steve Jobs has been gone for more than 4-5 years.
Maybe you should try Android Lollipop sometime.
Still the same shit I hated from the start.
What about Windows?
Other than them shitting on the Start Menu, nothing else bad.
Looking at the current trend in Japan, a “phone sized” console that links all your Nintendo devices together is a very interesting idea.
For some reason this makes me uneasy
I love android but nintendo needs to develop their own “android” for whatever the NX is I think.
I hate Android, because its a Google Product, and Google is Evil! I don’t like that move!!!
Fuck off iSheep.
Why? Apple is the Evil. Google wants all the people to access the internet which is a lot of ideas for people. That is good for the people. Apple only wants your MONEY
And yet, Apple doesn’t go out of their way to force the useless G+ or ruin YouTube on your ass.
Speaking of Apple, I hear they are thinking of making card. They probably have a 2025 car in their R&D right now.
And that I don’t care about including its overpriced and useless watch which I why I bought the 6th gen Nano (square touchscreen with clip and radio, watch wearable)
Google is Android? I didn’t know that? Too bad Apple can’t be Nintendo’s OS. Too expensive.
People seem to be having a problem getting their heads around an Android Based Nintendo Console, so I’m going to make it easier for them to understand:
If the Nintendo NX is going to be an android based system, that means developers will have an easier time developing and porting their games to the NX due to Android being simple to develop for.
A lot of worries are surrounding the issue of piracy, and yes, Android has been known to have a lot of pirate based software that allows you to port emulated games to your phone/tablet, BUT, Nintendo will actually have the say in this matter as they’ll only be using the OS as an operating system and nothing more, this means that they could remove the Google Play store and instead add their own eShop for people have access to apps and games that have to go through Nintendo first before publishing.
So yeah, I’m very happy if Nintendo goes for this type of OS because it means they have more money to develop the hardware and seeing how AMD spilled the beans on the NX running x86 architecture, I wouldn’t be surprise if this becomes the first system Nintendo has ever made that can turn a profit since the SNES.
What are you talking about with your last line? Wii turned over huuuge profits (and Gamecube and N64 were actually profitable too). Even Wii U is profitable now, although probably not enough so to make up for R&D costs.
I agree with the rest of your post mostly – though with a little bit of wait and see skepticism. As long as the console doesn’t lose the heart and soul that makes it a Nintendo console, then something like this should be fine and would obviously encourage third party developers.
Wii turned over a profit due to the marketing of the console towards families and casual gamers, but overall wasn’t a success in the eyes of the “hardcore” market.
Gamers are the market whether casual or not. It does not matter who it sold to. PS2 sold a lot due to being a DVD player. I am aware of many who bought it but didn’t play a single game on it. Surprising I know but it does not matter, the objective for these companies is to make a profit. Profit matters to them not whether someone else deems it a sucess.
Who cares about the hardcore market who tend to not like nintendo in the first place?
Even if hardcore doesn’t count you’re statement is still wrong about them not being profitable since SNES as Damon_Grant pointed out
Umm…the only system that Nintendo made that didn’t turn a profit is the N64. NES, SNES, GC, Wii and all versions of the Gameboy (including the DS’s) have all turned a profit over their life span. The Wii U is too early to call yet but even if they didn’t they’d still have enough money to fail twice before going broke. Just so you know.
Explains why Nintendo were in the shitter until the NES and SNES became a success… do some research, just so you know
Wrong. The ONLY console they didn’t profit from was the Virtual Boy. All other consoles did make them some money even the GameCube.
If that POS ever comes near my favorite gaming platform, then I’m officially done. Android fucking sucks.
Please no, only propietary software, no third-party bullshit just so lazy studios can port over their games with no effort whatsoever.
Typical Nintendo Fanboy argument ^
Do you realize that is exactly what we have with Wii U? The whole point of a new console is exactly getting back 3rd party developers!!! Some might be shitty, yes, but there are also good games we are not getting because of Wii U being as it is :(
No. They’re all turning lazy and greedy.
THIS ^
nikkei had fuck up Nintendo info before with their “secret sources”, this comes after that Nintendo said they wont say anything regarding NX till 2016.
so I call bullshit and attention whoring as the news is just after the Japan Only E3
^ Blind fanboy
No offense but from a lot of your comments I’ve seen in articles you are the fanboy. And he didn’t say ANYTHING fanboyish, just that he will wait to hear from nintendo before believing this. As will I. I’m not for or against this decision, as long as whatever Nintendo decides turns out amazing. But waiting for nintendo to say something has absolutely nothing to do with being a fan boy.
So… what does this mean? I can’t get my head around it. I hope it doesn’t mean the next Nintendo console is only going to have mobile tier garbage.
People seem to be having a problem getting their heads around an Android Based Nintendo Console, so I’m going to make it easier for them to understand: If the Nintendo NX is going to be an android based system, that means developers will have an easier time developing and porting their games to the NX due to Android being simple to develop for.
Why does NX need to run X86? Just gave the Power 10-12 cores. Besides I thought X86 was shit for video gaming?
>>>If the NX is a hybrid machine, it could use 2 different systems, the Android to the more “mobile” friendly games and the true system for the true games>>>
It is not a hybrid. Iwata said it will be multiple hardware. There will be no hybrid. Delete that from your memory banks please.
>>>I see>>>
What you mean multiple hardware? It better be a power 7. Otherwise no GameCube games. I want to play Pikmin 2 without reconnecting my GameCube . Too bad they thought 1gb was enough for the OS back in 2008 and now realized that wasn’t enough 7 years later.
Multiple in the sense of handheld and console line in the thought process of iPhone and iPad.
Stop being lazy and connect your GameCube. It’s a great system and still deserves a spot in your entertainment center.
When did he say this? I’m not saying you’re wrong, I would just like to read the article he said it in or watch whatever video he said it in.
He said it in the Q&A that recently happened. I copied it to a comment about it in that article on this site. The investor asked him the question and he answered it. That’s why I don’t understand why people still talk about a hybrid console.
True I gotta find that and read lol
You have explained your concern about users being divided by hardware. Currently, you have both a handheld device business and a home console business. I would like to know whether the organizational changes that took place last year are going to lead to, for example, the integration of handheld devices and home consoles into one system over the medium term, or a focus on cost saving and the improvement of resource efficiency in the medium run. Please also explain if you still have room to reduce research and development expenses.
A 5
Iwata:
Last year Nintendo reorganized its R&D divisions and integrated the handheld device and home console development teams into one division under Mr. Takeda. Previously, our handheld video game devices and home video game consoles had to be developed separately as the technological requirements of each system, whether it was battery-powered or connected to a power supply, differed greatly, leading to completely different architectures and, hence, divergent methods of software development. However, because of vast technological advances, it became possible to achieve a fair degree of architectural integration. We discussed this point, and we ultimately concluded that it was the right time to integrate the two teams.
For example, currently it requires a huge amount of effort to port Wii software to Nintendo 3DS because not only their resolutions but also the methods of software development are entirely different. The same thing happens when we try to port Nintendo 3DS software to Wii U. If the transition of software from platform to platform can be made simpler, this will help solve the problem of game shortages in the launch periods of new platforms. Also, as technological advances took place at such a dramatic rate, and we were forced to choose the best technologies for video games under cost restrictions, each time we developed a new platform, we always ended up developing a system that was completely different from its predecessor. The only exception was when we went from Nintendo GameCube to Wii. Though the controller changed completely, the actual computer and graphics chips were developed very smoothly as they were very similar to those of Nintendo GameCube, but all the other systems required ground-up effort. However, I think that we no longer need this kind of effort under the current circumstances. In this perspective, while we are only going to be able to start this with the next system, it will become important for us to accurately take advantage of what we have done with the Wii U architecture. It of course does not mean that we are going to use exactly the same architecture as Wii U, but we are going to create a system that can absorb the Wii U architecture adequately. When this happens, home consoles and handheld devices will no longer be completely different, and they will become like brothers in a family of systems.
Still, I am not sure if the form factor (the size and configuration of the hardware) will be integrated. In contrast, the number of form factors might increase. Currently, we can only provide two form factors because if we had three or four different architectures, we would face serious shortages of software on every platform. To cite a specific case, Apple is able to release smart devices with various form factors one after another because there is one way of programming adopted by all platforms. Apple has a common platform called iOS. Another example is Android. Though there are various models, Android does not face software shortages because there is one common way of programming on the Android platform that works with various models. The point is, Nintendo platforms should be like those two examples. Whether we will ultimately need just one device will be determined by what consumers demand in the future, and that is not something we know at the moment. However, we are hoping to change and correct the situation in which we develop games for different platforms individually and sometimes disappoint consumers with game shortages as we attempt to move from one platform to another, and we believe that we will be able to deliver tangible results in the future.
To the extent that you can share with us today, I would like you to give us a hint about NX, the dedicated video game system for which you said you would announce the details in 2016. Is it possible that you will both announce it and release it in 2016? Will it be a replacement for any of the existing dedicated game systems, or will it become your third pillar, so to say? Or, in the first place, should we abandon the current notion of thinking about home consoles and handheld devices separately? Also, does the “N” in “NX” stand for “Nintendo”? Does this codename “NX” have any specific meaning?
A 4
Iwata:
We will not announce any details about NX until 2016. I used the name “NX” during our joint press conference with DeNA on March 17 because we thought that our announcing the business alliance with DeNA to start a smart device business could result in such misunderstanding as “Nintendo is making a transfer to smart devices because it is pessimistic about the future for dedicated video game systems.” I intentionally chose to announce the development of NX so early because I wanted to confirm the fact that we are developing a new dedicated video game platform, that we have never lost passion regarding the future for dedicated video game systems and that we have bright prospects for them. Though I cannot confirm when it will be launched or any other details of the system, since I have confirmed that it will be “a dedicated video game platform with a brand new concept,” it should mean that we do not intend it to become a simple “replacement” for Nintendo 3DS or Wii U.
Your question also included the “current notion of thinking about home consoles and handheld devices.” When it comes to how dedicated game systems are being played, the situations have become rather different, especially between Japan and overseas. Since we are always thinking about how to create a new platform that will be accepted by as many people around the world as possible, we would like to offer to them “a dedicated video game platform with a brand new concept” by taking into consideration various factors, including the playing environments that differ by country. This is all that I can confirm today.
Taking this opportunity, because we were often asked if we will make any new announcements about NX, smart device applications or QOL at this year’s E3 show, let me confirm that we will not discuss anything about our smart device business or QOL there because, to us, E3 is an event mainly for dedicated video game systems. Also, because we have confirmed that any new information about NX will be announced in 2016, I hope you will understand that if you expect us to discuss NX during the upcoming E3 show, you will just end up being disappointed.
Ahhhhh thank you for that piece sir much appreciated.
Amd did not say it was for Nintendo. They only said a gaming company and that is all.
Nope. Not even Nintendo will adapt and use that shit.
1. No
2. They only talked about better gaming support through coding since the fuckers are using x86 as means for an easy way out to work hard on polishing games right out of the gate.
3. Not sure if I want the game myself anymore.
4. lol You’re still playing that DOA PS3/WiiU-tryhard handheld?
1. I’m sure it will benefit Nintendo now how will it idk but Nintendo need help in a lot of categories I’m sure you know that
2. That is why I said it was a rumor I’m sure you know what a rumor is lol
3. If the next Nintendo console is x86 then that may be good in development times and of course for 3rd parties buy it also brings unpolished games unless if Nintendo pay extra for the games to become polished first when they release which I highly doubt since Nintendo is conservative with their money but who knows Nintendo has changed a lot in these past few years in many ways
4. I haven’t gotten the vita yet but you know what I decided to do instead of listen to people and reading a lot of bad news I looked at the games of the system and found out well damn there are a lot of games I have not played whether they are new games or ports or remasters and since I just got into rpgs last year I want to play more rpgs and the vita has a lot and will continue to get more and that is all regarding the vita but I do have freedom wars which I can’t wait to play
5. Obviously the vita is better then the 3ds in many ways but that doesn’t matter what matters are the games and of course I will get a new 3ds or whatever the last 3ds is later on in my life
It’s not a bad idea. Android is cool to me. I just hope Android is thinking of 2021 while NX is currently in R&D. And not thinking of 2015. After all Microsoft isn’t thinking of 2015 while Xbox 2 is in R&D.
How can you think of 2021 when you have no clue what is out then?
Yup.
I don’t really see an actual benefit to using Android, but I feel it might be what they’ll use. They will need to heavily modify it in any case so they can reserve a set amount of power and access for the games. Using Android will ensure that I won’t be buying during the first year, if at all.
Easy, when Wii U was being made in 2008, they failed to think of 2015 technology. That’s why Wii U sales suck now. Yet if they fail to think of 2021 technology and only thinking of 2015 then it will fail again.
How can you think of technology that is not out yet? You only can use what is available.
He means using as much power as possible. Nintendo was stingy on power for the wii u and didn’t set to compete with ps4 or xbone in power, they chose to be a little more powerful than last gen. They shouldn’t ever do that. Nobody should.
I know what he mean just the way he is saying it does not make sense. All three companies think of what is available now when they are making the decisions. 2021 tech would be too expensive to think about for a console. If I was building a new PC today piece by piece at a time, I can only use 2015 tech at the earliest. No 2016 tech available because it is not 2016.
Gotcha
I hope someone can explain something to me, I’m not so good when it comes to stuff like my question.
If the TV console part of this whole NX thing is based off android, it can still be super powerful, right? As in more powerful than the phones. Sorry if I sound stupid :P
It’s gonna be very similar to OUYA. Look how OUYA is doing right now and you will see a similar number from NX if this rumor is true.
Android is an operating system. It is not hardware. Nintendo can use whatever hardware they want to use. It is like building a PC using android instead of windows. Same way Xbox is integrating parts of windows 10. Playstation uses an OS that I can’t think of the name. They will customize it just like Microsoft and Sony does to their standards.
Another fanboy war.
*sips coffee*
Happiness is so much more enjoyable, when it’s based on the saltiness of fanboys.
Sounds crazy. I definitely didn’t see this coming.
It’s all speculation at this point but it does make sense. It will definitely increase the 3rd party support if they go with this but it’s awkward and complicated at the same time that Nintendo would trust Google of all companies if the rumors prove to be true. We’ll see next year how everything unfolds but to be honest, so long as the NX has great games and features for gaming I’m satisfied
Pingback: Irá a Nintendo NX usar o sistema operativo Android?
This sounds odd if it is true. On the other hand I did say Nintendo should use hardware that’s easy for third party developers to use so that they have less excuses to not make games for Nintendo system. We’ll see what happens.
Android is an operating system not hardware.
Would it make any of you feel better if “Google” was in charge of the operating system instead? Especially since these are the guys who had so called “improved” YouTube over the years with their forced Google+ system.
Crap, I need more information on the NX system. But im not sure I like what im reading. Just once, I would have liked to see Nintendo completely smash faces with a System…
BULLSHIT THEY SAID THE SAME ABOUT WII U
IF ITS ANDROID THEN THE GAMES ARE ANDROID NOT NINTENDO WAKE UP FOLKS
Dude they wouldn’t make a mobile game only console. Trust me they ain’t that stupid.
NINTENDO OS AND CHIP SET ACROSS PLATFORMS IS NOT ANDRID
ITS LIKE ANDROID OR IOS AS IN ITS THE SAME ACROSS PLATS
JESUS CHRIST PEOPLE
not true. nintendo is just going to make another gimmick that will further drive away gamers and developers.
WHEN DID NINTENDO EVER MAKE A GIMMIC
SO ANOLOG STICK WAS A GIMMIC AND D-PAD AND MOUSE POINTERS THERE GAMES CONTROLLERS YOU FUCKING IDIOT CASUAL
NOW RUN ALONG AIM IN FPS GAMESVWITH A STICK COMPLAIN ABOUT SPATOONS AMAZING MOUSE GYRO
AND SHARE A TV SCREEN IN SPLIT MODE INSTEAD OF HAVING A GAMEPADFOR DUALSCREEN
FUCKING SLAYED YOU IDIOT CASUAL
NINTENDO OS IS NOT ANDROID LOL AT EVERY BRAINDEAD FUCK
You’re a fucking retard just shut up bitch you’re shit ain’t even worth reading flaming fanboy fuckass
I just wish they’d mention something other than motion controls in every god damn comment they make, at least…
Yea that person just put caps lol on and spouts out a bunch of craziness lol tired of it
calm down son. you’re making a retard out of yourself.
Gimmicks are something that attracts a consumer to purchase an item. Powerful hardware is a gimmick. Internet use in consoles is a gimmick. Home consoles and handhelds are a gimmick. So I don’t know why you using gimmick like it is a bad think. Bring on the gimmicks. I’m glad the home consoles gimmick took off or we would still be playing the arcades.
I guess you don’t want nintendo to succeed.
I don’t care if Nintendo succeed or not. I don’t work for Nintendo and don’t have any stock in Nintendo. I purchase the company’s home console products and the company’s video games made on the home console product.
I don’t see why this is a bad plan in the slightest. Most of you people on here are acting out of plain fanboyism. If the NX runs off of Android and packs a punch in terms of power, it could be very successful. Especially since it will be a Nintendo console with Nintendo games, and be very easy to develop for, which could make it very easy for third party developers to develop and port onto.
People on here seem to be making the argument that due to the Ouya’s failure, that the NX would follow a similar path simply because the similar OS. The reason the Ouya failed was because it was not backed by an already prominant gaming company with a name generally known for fun, gaming, and quality. It simply does not have the fanbase or the popularity behind it, nor does it have the games.
If Nintendo does this, I believe that they will not have the play store on the console. I suspect that android games and apps that Nintendo approves will make its way to the eshop in order to ensure quality, and maintain that no viruses or hacking can take place.
I don’t understand the pure hatred on here towards Android and this idea. While it may not be true, I would support this as it would help Nintendo dig themselves out of the grave they’ve been slowly digging themselves into.
If its not true, then fine, I’m sure Nintendo has another fix planned to create a console that more people want, and more will develop for. I think they’ve learned some lessons.
Exactly I am glad someone has a brain and can think on this website
Well Nintendo if this is true then I guess we’ll take different routes…
Hope it’s just for developers that need but not literally what the Console runs on
Android is:
-An operating system
-An operating system you can customize how you like
-An operating system with the ability to call down to the hardware at a low level
Android is not:
-A hardware architecture
-A mandate to be a phone
-A mandate to not be a walled garden
-A mandatory Google service(This means Google wont be a part of anything Nintendo does with this)
Just like how Apples OS is Linux based and forked and built to be its own thing Android can be modified and built in the same way. It will still be Nintendo’s own OS system, all that they’re doing is using the Android base as a starting point, they’ll build it, customize it, and change it as much as they want to the point people wont even realize its and Android OS.
Ouya is using stock Google Android OS, it is not their own OS. Again Android is a STARTING POINT. What we see in phones and tablets and the Ouya is NOT what you should expect from whatever Nintendo is making. All the Android OS base is allowing Nintendo to do is build upon an architecture that
1) Can easily work across multiple devices (I.E Handheld and Home Console)
2) Already has a structure in place for Media Apps (i.e Netflix, Hulu, etc.)
3) Allow developers easier time developing for both Handheld and Home Console as porting between the two will now be simplified
Android is not limited to phones/tablets/microconsoles. It can be used for something as weak as a watch or a strong as a PC. As yes there is Android based computers out their. It can work on x86 architecture like what PS4/XBone are using.
People also say pirating is rampant on Android but thats only because Googles Android OS is open in order for all developers to get onto the App Store. Nintendo building their own OS off of Android allows them to fork these openings and lock it down so piracy will not be an issue compared to what people see on phones (Example: Verizon uses a modified version of Android OS on their phones which locks down some of those openings which is why their phones are harder to root than other companies)
There are no downsides to using Android as the basis for their OS system, it simply allows them to get another hurdle in their console development out of the way alot quicker, its the same with how Sony used FreeBSD as the basis for their OS rather than building their own from scratch. Its just easier to go with something that people already know works and then modify it to your liking.
Thank you!!! Finally, another sane person on this website!
Goggle has nothing to do with whatever nintendo decides to do. Android is an operating system and Google is a company powered by Android in one of its divisions. There you have it.
Hopefully Nintendo will keep Google on a tight, not TOO tight, leash. After all, it’s not like Youtube has been the best since Google bought it. In fact, Youtube has gotten worse.

At first I was also concerned because of Android’s openess in it’s OS. But for a moment there I forgot that it’s that same openess that will allow Nintendo to change it and mold it in a way that it better fits their next console. I also see why they went for Android and not iOS (apart from the Google benefit). I am a programmer, and recently I started myself on mobile development, I’m new to this so I still haven’t done anything “commercial”. Thing is, Apple is soooo closed and dense in it’s way for getting programmers to their platforms!!! It’s soooo hard to become an iOS developer! Not because it’s hard on coding (It’s just C # and Objective-C), but because all of the stupid restrictions they give you! Android, on the other hand, is much more flexible in that sense, and with their very own Android Studio and free online courses to become a developer, it’s almost as if they were inviting you to come over and code away (which has pretty much always been Google’s way of working).
Now, of course Android Studio wouldn’t be the tool for creating “apps” and videogamos for the NX (although they COULD create a plugin… hmmmm…). But! Even if it wasn’t Android Studio, even if I was required to use Unity or UE 4, or whatever other things, I think this is a good idea. A Linux kernel and a hardware built around the OS!? That would be awesome! I know why many people don’t like Android and go for iPhones and Apple products, let’s face it, Apple creats (overvalued) hardware that interacts directly with the iOS. Android, on the other hand, can be installed on any hardware, and that’s why it sometimes fails (Huawei phones for example SUCK!). However, the Nexus hardware IS built around the OS, and as such is faster, and much more stable, even than an iPhon or iPad.
Console creators, such as Nintendo, build their hardware around their OS, so they already have experience on creating compatible hardware for the specific OS they’re building, and with the correct hardware and a very good implementation of Android as their OS, well, I now think that if all this is true, it would be a great idea!
